Is there an alternate method to installing 10.6? my disk drive doesn't work

I've purchased osx 10.6 for my 2008 17-inch Macbook Pro and received the disk in the mail, but my disk drive doesn't seem to be working.  I was wondering if I could get some kind of flash drive or mountable disk image file that might be available for download or something? Anything except paying to get the disk drive fixed because i never use it anyway

I had to uninstall itunes, and now I don't want to install it because I won't be able to use my player.

  • Clean install of Snow Leopard, DVD drive doesn't work

I purchased a Snow Leopard Family Pack from Apple, and would like to do a clean install on my MacBook. Unfortunately my DVD doesn't work and I can't load it from the disc. Is there a way to download it from the Apple site? I'd really rather not buy a new drive.

The base Snow Leopard system is not available via web download. Once you install it from DVD, you can download updates to the latest 10.6.8.
Can you hook up your MacBook in target disk mode to another mac system and install it from there? Target disk mode requires a firewire connection between both systems.

  • After installing Quicktime CD-ROM/DVD drive doesn't work.

We use Quicktime to view files created by agencies. After installing Quicktime 7.1 the CD-ROM/DVD drive on the IBM thinkpad no longer works.
error - This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
The only way to resolve this issue is to edit the registry and remove the Upper and Lower filters.
Why does this happen? Can you please let me know if this will be amended soon, and is there a way of installing the software to stop this from happening?
    IBM Thinkpad   Windows 2000

Last night I had the same problem. Tried to upgrade and got the version with Itunes to see what it was. After reboot, Both physical drives and a vertual drive now have the yellow mark. This program should not have touched device drivers. Uninstalled both quicktime and Itunes and rebooted. Same thing. Reinstalled Quicktime. Same thing. Ran reg mechanic. it said 2 dlls where missing:
    PxSFS.DLL
    pxwma.dll
These don't seem to be device drivers, so should not have had an effect, but I replaced them which made reg mechanic happy. Problem is still there.
In Event viewer for application I now have this error at each reboot:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( IDriverT ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: Service started.
For System Event I have this at each reboot because the cdroms are disabled:
The Cdralw2k service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

  • Is there any particular software is installed in HP so that head- phone should work

    Hi,
I uninstalled some of the software after that headphone stopped working.
Is there any particular software is installed in HP so that head- phone should work.

    Hi,
I don't know which software you DID do unsinstall. Believe this or not: just get back home from work and my wife could not  Skype with her sister using her laptop (1 week old). To be honest I don't know what she's done, nothing wrong last week. I went to Device Manager to unsinstall IDT and reboot the machine. After 10mins, bingo. Now she's happy and I'm happy too.
Please go to Device Manager, Sounds ..
    Unsitall sound,
    Reboot the machine,
Wait for 10 or more minutes.
Note: Your machine must be online.
    Hope this helps.

If your Macbook Pro (MBP) came preinstalled with OS X Lion (10.7), you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall it.
You will need an Internet connection.
Restart your Mac using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server and load their Recovery HD.
From the OS X Utilities menu, select Reinstall OS X. You should see a Lion logo to the left of this option.
If your MBP came preinstalled with OS X Snow Leopard you will need the DVD and an external CD/DVD drive to use to install it.
You may also be able to put your MBP into Target Mode with another Mac running a version of OS X that is compatible with your MBP. From that other Mac download OS X from the App Store and point to your MBP (Target Mode) to install to. I've never tried this but it sounds like it might work.

  • I have Adobe Acrobat 9.5.4 installed on my computer and it doesn't work when PDFing

I have Adobe Acrobat 9.5.4 installed on my computer and it doesn't work when PDFing my document using Microft Word 2010. I have tried using the tab add-in, but it doesn't respond either. The only way to convert my document is to save it as a .pdf from the save as drop down box. I need to be able to have the full functionability of creating a PDF document with the tabs and links working.
    Please help!

From OFFICE 2010 you either have to have AA X or just print to the Adobe PDF printer. You give no information on your operating system or specifically what you mean by PDFing -- there are multiple ways to create a PDF from a WORD document and you have given no information. However, in this case your only choice is to print to the Adobe PDF printer. Otherwise, you need to upgrade Acrobat.

  • Installing Programs Without The Disk Drive Icon Loading On Desktop

    Hey,
I am super anal and don't like any icons on my desktop and I am wondering how, when installing programs, you can install them without the disk drive icon being left on the desktop?
    Thanks.

Oh, right, sorry, one thing I didn't mention. I DO like to have CDs and DVDs and such show up on the desktop when I (seldomly) have them in my computer.
So, is there any other way? If I uncheck the CDs and DVDs line then this solves the disk drive icon but also gets rid of my CD icons.

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

  • Since installing mavericks my WD time machine doesn't work, it keeps insisting it needs more space? This wasn't an issue an hour earlier?

Since installing mavericks my WD time machine doesn't work, it keeps insisting it needs more space? This wasn't an issue an hour earlier?
Id also like to know if Powerpc software will be supported? I have C&C Generals on disc but it doesnt run now mavericks is installed?!
    Annoying!

Regarding time machine, it probably took a full backup after you put mavericks on. To investigate, open Console, select "All Messages" and type "backup" (without the quotes). It will then only show you backup-related messages. If you're not sure how to read those, copy them and paste them into a reply here; we can investigate the situation.
I don't know anything about your PPC software issue, sorry.

  • I have installed 0S5 but restoring the backup doesn't work. the following messages appear: An error accurred while restoring this iphone (-20)  because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with iphone being restored (my iphone 3GS)

I have installed 0S5 but restoring the backup doesn't work. the following messages appears: An error accurred while restoring this iphone (-20), followed by another message:  because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with iphone being restored (my iphone is 3GS), I tried restoring the factory settings and then restore the backup, but the same problems and I have lost all my contacts, pictures etc

    Hi Ckuan,
Thanks a lot for your advice.
Deleting the correupted back up means to delete the information of one month since the last back up I made is one month ago.....right?
This back up I made right before I restored my iphone.  During the restore however my OS was upgraded to 5.1.1. and reading the comments on the internet it seems I am not the only one whom experience this problem.
Can it be that if I downgrade my OS back to 5.1. the back up will not be considered as corrupted?  If so, how do I downgrade the iphone?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I'm trying to instal ios 5.1 but it doesn't work

I'm trying to instal ios 5.1 but it doesn't work can yoiu help me

I got 5.1 installed late last night (East Coast time).  I also downloaded the new iPhoto app.  It was a little slow for both downloads (3-4 minutes), but both completed just fine.
James is right, the servers are likely experiencing high traffic volume.  Give it some time for the traffic to decrease and the download should proceed smoothly.

Well then you could download the Epson Printer Driver package for Lion. This will add all the Epson printers in that list.

  • I have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro that has lion installed when I recieved it, according to the support pages AHT is supposed to work over the internet if it wasn't installed, Mine wasn't and it doesn't work. Where can I download it from?

I Have a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 macbook pro, I recieved it with OSx 7.2 lion installed, I need to us AHT (apple hardware test) according to the support page that I copy here
    Additional Information
Apple Hardware Test is included on the DVDs that are shipped with some Macintosh computers. If the copy on your hard drive becomes unavailable, use the DVDs to run Apple Hardware Test.
For Intel-based Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.4  or earlier, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1  and should be included with your computer.
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install  Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
For some Apple computers that shipped with OS X Lion, if Apple Hardware Test cannot be found on the hard drive, an Internet-based version starts up instead.
This doesn't work as the additional information statement says it should above.  Could someone at apple give me an idea of where to get it or what the "REAL" solution is, since it doesn't work on an internet version which was confirmed today at the Genius Bar in the Apple store.
    Please help me

Thanks, while it worked on yours it doesn't work on mine, any other ideas?
Are you holding down the "d" key, all by itself, just after the system shuts down for a restart?
And how long did you hold it down?
I held mine down for about 40-50 seconds. Then I lookat at my routers WAN light and it was flickering so I let up on the d key.
If that does not work then maybe there is something wrong with your MBP. Is that the reason you want to run this test, something isn't right with your unit?

  • When I installed jms (j2ee1.3) my lookups doesn't work anymore...

Hi. I was using j2se 1.3 and performed some lookups on objects from an Oracle 8.1.7.
Then, in order to use jms, I installed j2ee 1.3 and j2se 1.3.1. Now my lookups doesn't work anymore, but my lookups on jms objects (por example Queue or QueueConnectionFactory) does work fine. This is the code that produces the error, and the error:

    java.naming.factory.url.pkgs=com.sun.enterprise.naming
The weird thing is that when I remove %J2EE_HOME%\lib\j2ee.jar from the classpath, the lookup works fine again but, of course, I can't use the jms classes.
From the "Unknown service" message, I presume that the problem is related to the service provider and/or something with the environment properties.
    PLEASE ANY HELP!!
    Thanks.

This seems weird enough for bringing to the attention of the JNDI technical team.
If you have not already done so, you might want to send this message directly to them at [email protected]
There seems to be some incompatibility between Oracle classes and J2EE 1.3 classes. As you have pointed out, in some service provider classe(s).
