Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

I want to create a sign on PW without using file vault

I have an MPB and I want to have the screen and computer secured via a logon PW, but I don't want to use file vault.
It has been a while and I have my password that allows me install software and make changes etc.
How do I make that same PW to be the PW every time I start up or wake up the computer?

Disable Automatic Login under System preferences, Accounts, Options
You will then have to enter your password on the login screen to unlock everything
To easily lock the screen with a single mouse click, open Keychain Access, then choose preferences and click "show state in the menu bar"
You will then see a lock appearing in the upper right corner of the menu bar.
Clicking it will reveal a menu with a lock screen option

It can stay connected fully charged without any problems.
No issue using the iPhone while charging.

Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac? I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro not starting up. I need to figure out how to access files with my PPC Desktop; if possible.
What type of files can I access and what type I cannot?
My Macbook Pro: MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM
My PPC: Power mac G4/Upgraded 1.2GHZ /800+RAM/3 HD =400+ GB, Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You will need software that is compatible with the data files on the backup drive, ie. if they are .doc files you will need Word (or a substitute).
You don't mention what type of files are on the drive so it is hard to be specific.

Should files be securely deleted if using File Vault?

Do I need to "shred" or in someway securely delete files and mail that sit in File Vault? I am new to the MacOS and I am not sure where deleted files/mail go. If they don't leave the Home Folder it should be ok but if they somehow are relocated outside the Home Folder, I assume I would have a problem unless they are securely deleted.

The default Trash location is a hidden directory in your Home folder, ~/.Trash, which would be in your File Vault, assuming the File Vault includes your entire Home directory and doesn't leave anything out.
When you delete a file, its directory entry is updated, rewriting the parent directory of the file to the ~/.Trash folder. Then when you empty the Trash, the directory entry of the file is simply removed and the file disappears from the file system. They don't really go anywhere, they just disappear. However, the bytes still remain on the disk until something else comes along and writes to those sectors, so Secure Delete can be used to overwrite the previously used areas of the disk with zeros.
I guess it depends on how careful you want to be. You may also be interested in using Secure Virtual Memory if you aren't already, under "System Preferences->Security".

Issue using "Find" in Bridge to search external drive

When using "Find" in Bridge (version 2.1.1.9) in CS3 to search for files on an external hard drive I must either check "Include Non-Indexed Files" or go to the external drive and build the cache for the folders I want to search. Otherwise the files will not be found.
Having to build the cache in the external drive or use non-indexed search slows down the search process. Is there a way around this. Bridge preferences are set to "Automatically Export Caches to Folders". I use SyncBack for back up to the external drive.

Thank you for the reply. I thought that once the cache is built and exported to a folder, that folder would be indexed and ready for a search by Find. And when copying that folder to another drive the files would remain indexed and available to a search by Find on that drive.
I have not copied the central cache to the external drive. So I assume that when using Find to search the external drive it is looking at the caches in each folder on that drive.

Cannot use File Sharing Between Two Macs Running tiger

I have a G3 Desktop and a Platinum powerbook connected wirelessly using an Airport Extreme. I used to be able to easily share files between the two Macs but since upgrading to Tiger on both machines and loading the latest software upgrades and Airport firmware, running Disk Utility, setting preferences to turn on AppleTalk and file sharing, file sharing does not work. It worked one time after downloading the new Airport firmware but now I cannot find the other computer on the Airport network. There are only two computers on the Airport network. Does anybody have any ideas?

Problem solved by reading the reply to dkolenda's post earlier today. I turned off UDP traffic blocking inthe firewall settings and now both computers can see each other and share files.

Created files in trail version now having issues using file in CS3

Hi Everyone,
Hopefully someone can answer my question. I don't have much experience with Dreamweaver, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I downloaded the free trail version of Dreamweaver CS5.5 and starting creating a new site with it. My trial version has ran out so I would like to finish the files using the Dreamweaver CS3 that I currently own. I'm able to open the files and move things around. However, when I went to the draw an new AP Div, I draw the box and it just disappears. The new div labeled #apDiv 7 shows up under CCS Styles panel but I can't get the actually box to show up on the screen even when changing the attributes on the #apDiv 7 under the CSS Rule Definition Box. I can create a new document in CS3 and draw an AP Div just fine. I'm just not sure why the files I created in the trail version are not allowing me to add this element to the layout.

First thing.When you post a question here it helps immensely if you post a link to the page or the code from it if it isn't online.
Working strictly in APDivs is hardly the way to build a page/site anymore. As you have seen it isn't easy or functional.
In the CSS panel there are attributes listed for the APDiv and should show the positioning X and Y as well as the width and height. If you go into your CS3 preferences, there is a tab for APDiv dimensions and location defaults.
But as I said, APDivs are a pain because you constantly have to adjust margins and padding to make them work with the content inside and stay where you want them, and when you're dealing with monitors between 1024 and more than 2300 pixels across, a page full of APDivs can become scattered all over the place on a wide screen browser.

Is there anyway to use PowerPC applications on new Macs?

I just got a new Macbook from my college, and I run an emulator for Visual Boy Advance. It no longer works due to dropped support for PowerPC. I have read Mac no longer offers support for this via Rosetta anymore. However, is there still anyway to run applications like this?

Kappy has the best solution (as usual). Partition the hard drive and install a previous version of OSX. Snow Leopard would be the best version to install, but if you already have Leopard or even Tiger it will do the job although, the new iOS devices are not supported in Tiger.
If you want to use Snow Leopard as your main OS, just remove all your data from the Lion partition to an external hard drive so that there is only the OS on there (6GB or so) and create a large partition for Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you cannot remove Lion altogether.

Importing mp3 library issue. File location still on DVD (E) Drive.

I am trying to import a rather large library from a mp3 DVD to iTunes. Yet when everything is done (I choose File/Add Folder to Library), the location of the file still points back to my DVD (E) drive. There is just too much music of this DVD for me to select File/Library/Import Playlist, as I only have the option of selecting an individual song rather than a complete folder.
What would be the most efficient way to import this mp3 library onto my hard drive so I don't have to have the mp3 in my E drive every time I want to play a song?

Does File Vault only work on Startup Drive?

I've been reading up on FileVault, but I have a Macpro with 4 drives installed, plus some external HDD's as well.
Can FileVault secure them as well, or do I need a separate app? In which case, can anyone throw some recommendations my way?

Hi Andrew,
From what I've found it looks like you can encrypt multiple drives using FileVault 2. The only drawback is that you would only be able to access the data on these drives using a computer running Mac OS 10.7 or better. But if you're okay with that it should be just fine.
