Is there an iTunes database repair utility?

Does iTunes 8 have the ability to diagnose and/or repair its own database? Is there another utility that can?

Sadly, no.
If your library ITL file gets damaged, your best bet is to use previous copy. I backup my ITL on a regular basis, because I don't care to lose 4 year's worht of ratings and playcouts.

  • Start a new iTunes database (erase old one completely) ?

    As discussed in the following old post of mine, my wife's iTunes database has been corrupt and I can't find any workable solution. Songs just continue to disappear without a trace, so, with the purchase of a new iPhone4 I'd like to start from scratch;
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1683512&tstart=0
Note that we have two user accounts on our computer, the music is on the shared drive, and both of our iTunes "accounts" point there. So, we pull from the same source of music, but each have our own playlists and such. This was the only way I could find to not replicate all our music twice on two different user accounts.
We're not geting a new MacBook or iPod, but she is getting a new iPhone. So, I would like to completely blow away her old iTunes directory and start fresh.
However, the new iPhone4 will be restored from the iPhone 3G backup which will by default include all of the iTunes data as well. We'll do this so call history, texts and applications will all come over as-is.
We're prepared to go through the pain of creating new playlists again or at least importing them from the old database (that will be exported before we blow it away).
    Just in case I may have over complicated this question;
*How do I erase a user's iTunes database so I can create a fresh one?*
    THANKS!

    Thanks, Chris. This is really helpful. A couple more questions based on your answers;
    Chris CA wrote:
6 - File -> Library -> Import playlist and select the iTunes library.xml file in the iTunes folder on the desktop. This will bring back all the playlists and some other info. This needs to be done after step 5 because if the songs are not in iTunes, they will not show up in the playlists.
If the songs are missing, will they not show up at all (which is preferred) or will they show up with an exclamation point stating "the song could not be used because the original file can not be found..." Which is what happens now.
If it just only lists the songs that it can find, that would be great. We can focus on replacing files and not worry about all these playlists with huge holes of available music.
    Chris CA wrote:
7 - File -> Add to library and select the *Mobile applications* in the iTunes folder on the desktop.
When she plugs in her new iPhone, she should select Restore from backup then select the latest backup in ~\Library\Application support\Mobilesync\Backup
Okay, so what will happen here exactly... if she restores from backup won't it bring back the old iTunes library which we have just blown away? How do I restore everything, but then have her iTunes sync with the new library instead of the old one. (since the user account is the same i thought it might confuse the phone.
I will try the repair and restore suggestion as well when booted from the DVD. It was so long ago I can't remember if I did that, but I don't think so. I think I just restored from the backup and she has had files mysteriously disappearing ever since. Odd thing is, it doesn't happen to any of my songs...not a single one. Only happens to songs that are only in one of her playlists. But, rather than solve that puzzle I'd rather just start fresh. I'm picking my battles and have already lost that one.
    Thanks!

  • Anybody else finding that the iPod classic cannot handle their iTunes database?

I have a very complex database that heavily uses the smart playlists. I have playlists referencing playlists, etc. and the last 2 operating systems can't handle it. I've got way too many hours behind my iTunes database and I'm unwilling to throw it out to use the iPod. It works great on my machine, allowing me to create well balanced and interesting playlists that are broad and diverse. My database used to work on the iPod. The problem arose with the instalation of a new iPod operating system back over a year ago. The installation killed my iPod and Apple refused to consider that the upgrade was responsible and called it coincidence. Since then an iPod will only work until I make some small mistake, like trying to use the Genius or plugging it into my computer and making some change in my iTunes database. Then it's back to disk mode, erase, reboot, reload and eventually replace.
Apple dismisses the idea that there is some software or hardware flaw causing the trouble. They claim that the iPod software will handle any iTunes database that is functional and fits on the iPod with a little extra room. They have replaced my iPod 4 times in the last 6+ months under the now impossible idea that I am receiving a series of flawed machines. These iPods sits in my glove compartment of my car and suffer no abuse. Since the last OS update, I can only load an iPod by importing my music in smaller chunks, a day long process at best. A full load of the database kills a new iPod immediately. My last time through tech support we came up with this technique as a way to isolate a potential bad song or album. Everything loaded fine in chunks and the iPod handled everything until a made a change to one of the songs and it went into eternal Apple mode and was replaced at the store. I am pretty convinced that Apple is wrong on this one and that the iPod software or hardware is not robust enough to handle what you can do in iTunes. Anyone else have a similar problem? Anyone at Apple care to look a little more carefully at the problem as a learning tool?

    Hi huskerpapa!
The issue you are seeing could be related to several things, but luckily, we have an article that can help you troubleshoot this issue and find the source of the problem. That article can be found right here:

Can you merge two user accounts on a macbook? my wife has created a new user on her new macbook air then, inadvertently, created a second one when using the migration tool. 1st a/c has her office 365 install, while 2nd has her itunes database, docs and contacts. What is the best way forward to get everything into the one account? Not sure if the office 365 will allow another installation into the second account, otherwise would just do that and delete the first, if that is possible?

There is no merge but you can move data from one account to another via the Shared folder. Data is copied from Shared. Watch your free space when copying. These are large files.  Do one at a time if you are on a small drive. After making copy, delete from other users before you start next copy.
Office365 installs in the main Applications folder and is available for all users on the computer. Activation is tied to the drive not the User.

  • Could not lookup message because there is no database connection

I am getting this error message when I try to run test_fwktutorial.jsp page. This happens for my custom Jdeveloper project also in which I am trying to build a brand new page.
I did define the Run Time connection properly as following:
    DBC file: D:\oajdev\jdevhome\jdev\dbc_files\secure\sabercat.sr.csg.com_gis05.dbc
    User Name: <User Name>
    Password: <Password>
    Application Short Name: AK
    Responsibility Key: FWK_TBX_TUTORIAL
I did define the Database connection also and checked Use repository for design time.
I am getting the following exception when I run the pages.

  • How do I fix the itunes database?

itunes gives me an error on every sync to my ATV.
"Some of the items in the itunes library including, (16 podcasts) were not copied to the ATV because they could not be found."
I know the podcasts are gone from both the mac and the ATV, how do I fix the itunes database?
I have tried re downloading the podcasts and letting itunes delete them automatically after being watched, but i still get the error every time i sync. It is very annoying having to clear the error every sync.

    Re-creating the library described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Make sure you sync with AppleTV first if you have purchases on there not synced back to iTunes yet.
It will lose some settings eg connected AppleTV's, and possibly manually added metadata such as album art and text not automatically added on import or added after files imported - at least it did last time I did this.

  • Help with iTunes database and Time Machine after Lion clean install

I did a clean install of OS X Lion and think I've given myself problems with my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup and with my iTunes Library database files.
My iMac (2007) had become very sluggish so I opted for a clean install.  Before the install of Lion my Snow Leopard 10.6.8 internal 1TB HD was at about  600GBs.  I was using Time Machine to backup to an external 1TB drive.  I had my iTunes 10.?  library on the same drive.
For the Lion install I partitioned my internal 1TB HD into two partitions - a 250GB Lion boot partition and the rest for Lion data files.
Now I  have two problems - 1.  I can't  work out how to re-connect my Time Machine backups, since they were related to a much bigger original drive, and 2.  I can't seem to find my iTunes database files.
I also don't want to restore any application files at this stage, as I'm determined to do a fresh install of only the applications I need as I go along, and hopefully  avoid the issues of sluggishness I had with Snow Leopard.
I have all my iTunes files in their pre-Lion external HD folder, but that folder does not seem to  have the iTunes Library.XML or iTunes Library files.  I didn't delete them so I'm hoping they were in my iTunes folder on my SL boot drive.  But that drive was deleted during the install, so I'll be depending on Time Machine to restore the database.
Can anyone suggest a way to deal with Time Machine for my Lion install, and a way to restore my iTunes database?  I'd like to keep as much of the Snow Leopard Time Machine data as I can, while continuing to do Time Machine backups from my Lion installation.
Anyone know where iTunes stores those database files, if not in the external drive iTunes folder? Spotlight search doesn't find the files, but is there a way to search my old Time Machine backups without having the Time Machine backups folder re-connected in Lion?
    Thanks.

My iTunes folder is organised like this if it helps:
And iTunes uses them from the Prefrences like this:

  • Repair Utility for  xServe RAID?

We have an xServe with an attached RAID consisting of four 350 GB drives. The drives are set up as a RAID. Due to storms/hot weather (air conditioning failed) the server restarted and the RAID powered down. The xServe is fine but the RAID is not functioning. From RAID Admin the drives all show up and are OK but the array is not showing up. Is there any disk repair utility that would be useful on a RAID?
xServe RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
xServe RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The fact that it's showing up as spares is a significant problem. The host won't recognize it until the RAID recognizes the array. There is no separate utility to help you with this, other than RAID Admin.
What firmware version is on the array? If it's 1.5, there's a "recognize array" option that you should try. If it's an older version, I'd tell you it would be nice if you could have gone back in time and upgraded the firmware. Since that's not possible, you should call AppleCare (assuming you have got APS&S for Xserve RAID, or the machine is < 1 year old) and inquire about your options.

  • Repair utility says to load the disk, but no disk is provided.

The Lion comes as a downloard, no disk. But the repair utility says to insert the disk to to the repair.
I asked tech support if that were true. She said it was not true. I asked them to change the instructions to reflect what one really needs to do to repair the computer if it fails, and she hung up on me. (Really, no profanity, no insults, just a plain question. Must be a rough week with the Lion intro)
I still need to know if I need a disk available to repair the computer if it fails. Or how one would know how to repair it if it does fail without the disk and without the computer giving me instruction.
There is no written manual to explain. I am guessing that the we are presumed to be omnicient.

I've noticed that Lion creates a Recovery partition on your hard drive. Did the message say Repair or Recovery?

  • ITunes database integrity check?

In iTunes I have a few ! that have appeared in the first column indicating iTunes can't find the file. So far I have found three folders (albums) that are missing from my music library disc and I don't understand how or when they dissappeared. I haven't found any individual missing files yet, just missing whole folders. It appears iTunes doesn't update the ! indicator until it has some reason to actually go open the file. Is there a way to automate this? So far I've been looking at each song with Command-I to check the Where info under Summary, or selecting the first song of an album and using Command-R to view the songs in finder. This is going to take a long time with nearly 8000 songs in my library. I'm trying to get an handle on the extent of the problem. I am careful to only use iTunes to manage the library (I don't move files around with finder). My library is on an external Firewire drive. Ideally, I would like there to be an "iTunes database integrity check" command.

The MSDN documentation says "RESTORE VERIFYONLY" command does not verify whether the structure of the data contained within the backup set is correct. Does it mean the restore command will not able to detect corruption in the database and I just need to
restore each of the backs starting from the latest to see if integrity check fails after restore ? OR RESTORE VERIFYONLY will confirm if the database is un-corrupted ?
As the documentation suggests, RESTORE VERIFYONLY checks the structure of the backup but not the database itself.  You'll need to restore the backup to check the database consistency.

Are you going to use DBWizard ? Something is wrong then, your db name is in upper case which is not supported by the Wizard (point 8.2 of my article you linked).
    >
Nicolas, your article mentions that the name is supposed to be in upper case, which mine is. And it seems like you also used an upper case name in the end: O2H91WZD. So now I'm a bit confused as to what is actually supported. I believe it's supposed to be upper case, there was no error message about the uppercase name.
    >
Did you set the env. variables ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_BASE properly ? Which user are you connected with ? Did you updated the tnsnames.ora ?
Could you also post the content of the file $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/initFC91DB.ora ?
    >
ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_BASE are correct, that I'm sure of. And, if they weren't I wouldn't be able to connect to my test SEED database. As far as ORACLE_SID goes, I did change it accordingly depending on wether I was connecting to FC91DB and SEED.
    >
PS : what is SEED when you create database FC91DB ? What ORACLE_SID value did you set up front ?
    >
SEED is just a test database I created in the very beginning when setting up my Application and Database server environment - just to test connectivity on both sides. It has no use other then that. When I created FC91DB I simply added an entry in my tnsnames.ora and created a init.ora file, then set ORACLE_SID accoringly.
I can post back my tnsnames and init files once I get back to the server, thank you for input so far.

  • Lost Music with upgrade 9.2 - Found iTunes Database File???

When I upgraded to 9.2 itunes, I lost all the music I had downloaded from CD's. I found the itunes database file dated October 2007 in the Previous iTunes Library Folder. How do I get that music back on the itunes library dated August 2010 which was the date of the upgrade?? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Are you saying there wasn't an ITL file with a more recent date? There should be one from the date you upgraded to 9.2 if it is on the same PC and same windows userID.

  • Using time machine to recover iTunes database for metadata

In short, when I go back beyond a week in time machine I cannot find any .itl or even any of the .itdb or .xml files on my mac that I can restore with time machine.  The only version that is there is for the current library which is missing 99.9% of the content.
    The context:
    1. I had itunes folder on my hard drive and an external with all of the content. Over the years the external must have been disconnected or what not as a sizeable media folder had also developed on the hard drive.
    2. In order to free up space on the hard drive I consolidated the media and moved the library to a second external that had much more free space.
    3. I ended up deleting the iTunes library on the hard disc on or around 6 april 2015. I believe I deleted the whole folder.
no dramas - everything worked for weeks
    4. Today I noticed that the iTunes library was pretty much empty but for purchased music. All the podcasts, playlists and basically anything not purchased was gone.
    5. I look into the iTunes folder on the hard disc and I noticed that there is a music folder with two songs that my kid likes to play. It leo has all of the usual library xml files and the .itdb / .itl files (which to be honest I have never noticed before, I had only remembered ever seeing the .XML files).
    6. The "new" .itl file was created on Sunday 26 april at 5.30 pm.  The whole iTunes folder it sat in on my hard drive also did not exist before this time.
    7. If I use time machine and scroll back further in time than sunday there is no iTunes folder on my hard drive.
    8. I thought I would just need to find the .itl file that predated this new library that was created on Sunday. Trouble is I can't find one. On any disc, hard disc, the first external or the second external.  The only iTunes folder I can find with any of the database files needed is the one created on Sunday that is empty.
    9. I have all of the media organised on the second hard disc however I don't want to reimport and lose all the metadata that I have built up since 2001 at least.
    THE QUESTIONS
A - where should I be looking for the old iTunes database files using time machine if I used the advanced features of iTunes to move the database to the new disc
B - Can I perform some sort of system wide restore that would take me back in time to a point before last Sunday to get my old iTunes database back?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • Backing up itunes database

I am in the process of creating an itunes library with about 1200 playlists. My audio files are kept on an external hard drive, so  am not worried about losing them if my Mac mini or itunes crashes. Can someone tell me if there is a way to back up the itunes database so I won't have to go thru the arduous process of recreating all those playlists and re-importing all my files? I'm using itunes 10.7. Thanks.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Music/ as the path, and back up the iTunes folder inside.

  • How do you query the iTunes database by genre?

I am trying to enumerate music tracks from the iTunes database by genre.
I am able to get genre id's from the query
    http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStoreServices.woa/ws/genres
    The description is here:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/affiliates/resources/documentation/genre-mapping.htm l
I can retrieve urls to tracks with something like this
    https://itunes.apple.com/search?term=R+B/Soul&limit=2
However the search term applies to all fields and I get a mixed collection of results, many of them are wrong.
I would like to enumerate songs from a specific genre, but I can't figure out how.
I've tried multiple ways of using the "genreIndex" attribute, but I keep getting 0 results.
For example I would like to enumerate the first 10 Techno songs. Techno has a genre id=1050
    https://itunes.apple.com/search?term= any ideas??
    Thanks, Ed

Hi there are mappings for the reference fields from AP and AR, so you can buid up the links there. Just look at the reference fields of gl_je_lines and try to identify which is valuable for you.
