Is there an nntp server for these forums?

Hi,
I prefer to read posts to forums through my newsreader rather than through the web interface. Is there an nntp server for these forums that will allow me to do that?
Just wondered!
Thanks

No there is not. And I left the word "unfortunately" out as a FAQ will make absolutely no difference to the posting habits of many newcomers around here.
They will ignore it as they are ignoring the Oracle documentation, ignoring the search facility of these forums, and ignoring the ability of Google to find answers. Never mind ignoring netiquette and claiming that their problems are so critically urgent that we have no choice but to stop doing the work we get paid for immediately, and jump to it, assisting them for free.
The only thing that makes an impact in this regard is the old lead pipe. That needs to be swung hard at such times to clearly point out what is not acceptable.

I find it impossible to find dance remixes of pop songs.  Please help.
    Thank you

If the remix is in the iTunes Store, it will show up when you search on the title.
A much better selection of dance remixes can be found at Juno Download.  The downloads from Juno are in MP3 format, and can easily be added to your iTunes library.

  • Is there a keyboard shortcut for the arrows in grid view?

When you click on an album (or TV-show) in grid view there are two small arrows in the upper right corner, for flicking through to next or previous album.
Question: is there a keyboard shortcut for these arrows? Would be relly nice...
    I mean these buttons: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/2205425/itunes_pilar.png

    Ah this is useful!
However... it turns out that you have to press shift as well, so:
For left: ⇧⌘ [ (meaning SHIFT - COMMAND - LEFT SQUARE BRACKET)
For right: ⇧⌘ ] (meaning SHIFT - COMMAND - RIGHT SQUARE BRACKET)

  • No more NNTP for Adobe Forums

I just learned that Adobe has discontinued NNTP (Newsreader/Newsgroup) access to these forums. I only found out because I couldn't connect via NNTP and came here to the 'general' forum to register a problem ... which turned out to be 'a feature'.
I'm afraid that I won't be coming by here as often, if at all. Going to a website to see if there's any activity is a PITA compared to the NNTP alternative, where the group name just sits there among others and gets highlighted when there's new activity. I posted some more detailed objections (aka whined) in the general forum.
      - Herb V B

Yes, it is unfortunate that the NNTP access is not available anymore. However, Adobe was put in a position where it was absolutely necessary to migrate from the previous service provider for the forums (the old forums and for that matter the new forums) are hosted outside of Adobe itself using third party software. For better or worse, most of the newer on-line forum software packages simply don't support NNTP anymore.
An alternative that I use (and did use with the old forums) was e-mail subscriptions to particular forums or threads providing e-mails of each new discussion and response. Yes, that results in many short e-mails in my in-box, but with appropriate rules applied, I can sort through them easily.

  • Is there an Exchange server equivalent for Apple Xserve?

I have an Apple Xserve and I'd like to run something like an Exchange server, to allow my Entourage clients to host calendar, email, Tasks, and addressbooks on there. Is Apple working on anything like this?
    Mike

    Hi
There should be no need to post in the XServe Forum. The XServe is dedicated server hardware, your question is really about the Server OS. You could browse the Server Forum for more information:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96
To answer your question - Yes, absolutely. Kerio Mail Server:
    http://www.kerio.co.uk/kms_home.html
    Zimbra:
    http://www.zimbra.com/products/
Both of these products offer support for iPhone, Treo and Blackberry. KMS has a handy facility where it can remotely 'wipe' a supported mobile device if its been stolen. Although this is speculation and not really 'allowed' on these forums I think Apple is working towards similar features in their forthcoming Server products. Right now Apple's built in mail server is poor in terms of what is offered using the Interface. It's good enough to get you going if all you want are simple Mail Services. It's actually quite good. However if you want more then you there is not much you can't achieve if you're prepared to use the command line. A necessity at some stage if you are contemplating administering a server regardless of its role. Apple are planning to expand what is available by adding 'out of office' and server side 'email rules' facilities in Snow Leopard:
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/snowleopard/
You don't have that currently unless you are prepared to install avelsieve:
    http://email.uoa.gr/avelsieve/
I'm not sure how well Apple's built-in Mail Server supports shared contacts and calendars with Microsoft's products? It's been some time but I have had some mixed success in the past. KMS has no problem regardless of platform or what is being used. For PCs it behaves exactly as if it was an Exchange Server.

  • Recently backing up my ipad onto my macbook, which is the backup server for all of my gadgets.  This includes all my photos and tons of music.  The macbook said it could not backup the ipad because there was insufficient disc space to do so. What now?

I have a macbook operating OSX10.6.7.  Recently backing up my ipad which had lots of photos from a recent vacation.  I use this laptop as the backup server for all of my gadgets so it has thousands of photos and tons of music.  It just told me that it couldn't back up the ipad bc there wasn't enough disc space.  I was afraid that this would happen eventually.  What next?  Newer laptop with more space?  I'm not sure what files I could sacrifice to free up more space as most of these are important.

What size hard drive do you have in your MacBook? The cheapest options are, a larger internal hard drive, or an external drive. Or you could get a cheap desktop PC and network to it for storage. I've got one that lives in the hall with 3 Terabytes (That's 3000gb) of storage.

  • Is there a command cheatsheet for personalization server?

    Hello,
I am having trouble understanding how different commands work to forward a
page. Is there a simple cheat sheet that explains when to use different
    commands? Here are some examples:
How do I forward control to a standalone JSP page? Currently from
portal.jsp, I use <jsp:forward page="somepage.jsp"/> Is this the best way
from portal.jsp. What about from other pages?
How do I get back to the main jsp page. In the somepage.jsp I have tried
    the following:
    <%
    response.sendRedirect(response.encodeURL("/TestProduct/application/TestProdu
    ct")); %>
    <jsp:forward page="<%=createURL(request, getHomePage(request), null)%>">
    <jsp:forward page="<%=createURL(request,
    response.encodeURL(getTrafficURI(request)), null)%>">
    <jsp:forward page="<%=createURL(request, 'portal.jsp', null)%>">
    <jsp:forward page="<%=createURL(request, getHomePage(request), null)%>">
    <jsp:forward page="<%=getTrafficURINoContext(request)%>">
Sometimes one of them works, other times they don't. I still don't get the
difference between these. Yes, I have looked at the JavaDocs, but I still
don't get it. I am hoping that there is someone out there that has been
through these leaning pains that can help out with this!
I have one situation where I am at a standalone jsp page in the portals
directory. Depending on which button the user selects, I either want to
redirect back to the main portal page, or back to a login screen by logging
the user out (I require a login on all pages except the login page). Going
to the main page required using the sendRedirect. None of the jsp:forward
commands would work. I still havent been able to figure out how to log a
person out. I was trying to use jsp:forward back to portal.jsp with a
jsp:param of headerAction="signout", but that didn't work either.
Am I making this harder than it should be?
Thanks for any help any one can offer.

    Hi Kenneth,
I assume you are talking about WLCS/WLPS 3.5. You will want to check out
Webflow http://edocs.bea.com/wlcs/docs35/wflopipe/index.htm , which is included
with WLCS 3.5, but only if you have the Commerce Server license. The
Webflow/Pipeline framework has been popular and it is included with the basic
WLPS 4.0 license in the newest release and will enable you to manage your
application navigation without changing your initial JSP code.
That said, it looks like you are talking about navigation without using
Webflow, so I'll address that. I would not recommend simply doing a JSP forward
out to a standalone .jsp page from your WLPS application because you will lose
track of your WLPS/WLCS session attributes that were set with
JspBase.setSessionValue(), JspBase.setLoggedIn(), etc. You should navigate by
passing requests through the FlowManager servlet, which will put an attribute
into the request, containing a String representing your web application's
context. This is used as a namespace for session attributes so that you can
    have things like "exampleportal.SERVICEMANAGER.LOGGED.IN" and
"testportal.SERVICEMANAGER.LOGGED.IN" session attributes that are independent.
In other words, if you do a jsp:forward to a JSP page without going through the
FlowManager then the special key won't be present in the request, and then
JspBase.getLoggedIn() will always be false because JspBase.getLoggedIn() will
look for an attribute with a null component to the key like
"(null)SERVICEMANAGER.LOGGED.IN" and won't find it because it was set with
something like "myapplication.SERVICEMANAGER.LOGGED.IN" when you were in your
main application (which was accessed through the FlowManager servlet, which set
the special key in the request).
    Look at
    <wlcs3.5-install-dir>/config/wlcsDomain/applications/wlcsApp/exampleportal/portals/repository/_userreg.jsp:
    <%
    setOverrideDestination(request, JSP_USER_REG_SUMMARY);
    setLoggedIn(request, response, true);
    %>
    <jsp:forward page="<%=getTrafficURINoContext(request)%>"/>
This setOverrideDestination() call sets a request parameter that the FlowManager
servlet uses to forward to the real destination (after putting a "key" into the
request that will be used by all subsequent JspBase.getSessionValue() ,
getLoggedIn(), etc. calls). Then the jsp:forward is done to the FlowManager
    servlet.
Another common way to go through the FlowManager to another JSP page is through
the use of an HTML form. To do this, look at the example in
    <wlcs3.5-install-dir>/config/wlcsDomain/applications/wlcsApp/exampleportal/portals/repository/loginSuccess.jsp.
Look at the hidden input in the HTML form:
    <input type=hidden name="<%=DESTINATION_TAG%>" value="<%=getRequestURI(request)%>">
    and the action:
    <form method="post" action="<%=response.encodeURL(getTrafficURI(request))%>" name="UserLoginForm">
The hidden input sets a request parameter that says, "the real destination is
getRequestURI(), which is this page, so submit the form back to this .jsp
page". The action says, "submit the request to the FlowManger servlet that is
registered with this application in the Application Init property set ( search
for application_init and 'application init' in the docs, for instance:
    http://e-docs.bea.com/wlcs/docs35///////portal/portldev.htm#1042719 ) The
FlowManager servlet forwards the request to the destination set with the hidden
parameter (or with JspBase.setOverrideDestination, or with a request parameter
in the query string like "dest=/mystuff/index.jsp".
Note that the FlowManager implements a security feature that will not allow you
to go through the FlowManager servlet to a resource that is not in your
applications workingdirectory, as specified in the application init property
    set.
It is a long story. I would recommend that you use exampleportal to create a
few simple test portlets that practice these techniques. You should also create
a portlet that iterates through all session attributes and request attributes
and parameters so that you can see what I am talking about with the "key" used
to fix up WLPS session keys.
After you practice a little bit, you can contact support with a specific
navigation problem and they can help you solve it: (
    http://www.bea.com/support/index.jsp )

  • Are there any examples that do not require a personal webserver?  I do not need a server for my aps.

Back when Cirrus was Stratus, there was no need for a personal webserver to host a CGI script.
I have no need for a non AS3 server because my server is simply going to be another peer node on the network
It is a professional way to handle things too:
    1) You have a computer with a static IP that computers refer to as the master peer(yes wordplay).
2)If you can't afford a computer with a static IP, you can simply create a peer that responds to requests,"Are you the server?"  Yes, this is easily hackable, but when you're debugging, your friends aren't gonna be jerks.
All I want when I contact Cirrus is:
    1) A list of IP addresses of connected peers.
And if someone has example code:
    2) The ability to send "Hello World" to all peers.
Is this doable in Cirrus?  Stratus could do it.

the only difference between "Stratus" and "Cirrus (codename)" is the name.
Cirrus has never had a "list connected peers" function, nor has it ever reported IP addresses/port numbers of connected peers in ActionScript.
the VideoPhoneLabs example program has always required some kind of external registration service to register a peer ID for a name, and to look up the peer ID for a name.
it's possible to do P2P with Cirrus and no active web server by using RTMFP Groups (NetGroup, GroupSpecifier and friends). i have posted examples from my labs at MAX from years past that implement text chat and other functions using only Cirrus. and you can do P2P with groups on a LAN with no server at all (not even Cirrus).  see this thread:

  • Most cost efficient computer for a server using these specs

I want to know how important processing power and internet connection are when talking in terms of using multiple java socket threads that receive messages from various clients at once..
I need a computer that can hold as many of these threads at once while at the same time I dont want it to be to costly.. For example it sounds like a waste to get a 3Gz processor and a super internet connection when I can likely do practically the same amount of threads with maybe a 2Gz processor and the same internet connection..
So how important are each of these factors? Can anyone suggest a machine that would be able to handle plenty of threads for a nice price? I'm looking for a high Thread/dollar ratio :)....
    Brian

For chat, maybe not that much. The whole thing is likely to be driven purely by I/O from the users. I mean, the majority of packets sent to/from the thing would be expressing short texts messages typed by humans. Unless you're expecting a large operation, I would expect that this wouldn't be very taxing on your systems. What number of users are you expecting?
Offhand, the thing that glares out of me from your desciption is that you have a single server for pairing people up and (presumably) as a load manager for the chatroom servers. If that server goes down, you're in trouble. If I were you I'd consider adding some redundancy there. Any money might be best spent building up the cluster and making certain that there's plenty of redundancy to go around. For that matter, how many data centers do you have?
It also occurs to me that you might need a lot of disk space, depending on how much logging you want to do and whether you need to do some kind of session recovery after failures. Also are you storing user profiles for matching the people up? Do you have an external database server that you didn't mention? How much redundancy there?
There are services whose job is to hit servers and see what the response time is and whether they're up (they'll page you if they go down). That could be another good use for money, rather than specific hardware upgrades.
Generally it's very difficult to predict this kind of thing in advance, and a good profiling system and an architecture that will let you easily upgrade in response to problems is a good thing. Also lots of testing and load simulation is handy.
    Hope this helps.
