Is there an OCR option in Adobe Reader XI?

In prior versions (9, I belive), there was a way to select OCR to view and thus copy the contents of a pdf file. I can't seem to find any OCR function in XI.  Am I missing it, or has that valuable tool been removed?

Adobe Reader never had any OCR functionality.  If you did have that functionality, then you must have used Acrobat, not Reader.

I cann't find the "define" option in adobe reader when I read a PDF file in my iPad 3. I have already latest reader version and iOS 5.1.1 installed.

I believe that I figured it out.
holding finger over a word, will bring the copy/define menu
holding finger where there is NO text, empty space or image, will bring up the annotation menu.
but note that if you have a scanned document, where the words are actually an image, you will get the annotation menu, since there really is no text, just a bunch of pixels that look like text...
you can turn scanned text into "real" text by using OCR functionality of the desktop version of Acrobat Pro (not Reader), it would then create a layer of invisible text under the image of the text.

  • "Allow fast web view" Option in Adobe Reader

    Hi Experts,
Is there any chance "Allow fast web view" option in Adobe Reader can be controlled through Documaker settings? Documaker version is 11.1.
(Adobe Reader, go to Edit --> Preference ---> Internet ---> check/uncheck the option "Allow fast web view". )
In our case, Documaker generated PDFs are being downloaded by users using browser (IE 7/8/9). "Allow fast web view" option is causing issues in some IE versions. As of now we are manually un-checking the Adobe Reader option in every signle machine as and when issue occurs.

    Thank you for the reply..
I have tried the option in 11.1, 11.3 & 12.1 versions. As specified in printer reference, SortBatches option is not included in INI. Still no luck. PDF is by default taking the property from Adobe reader (version XI in my case). Any other INI changes will be required?

Adobe reader 11 installation fails. error message: there was an error installing adobe reader. adobe reader installation error. null. tried using adobe cleaning  tool. using XP sp3. seems that adobe 11 is not completely uninstalling. this is because when adobe reader  11 is removed  from add/remove program. when pc is rebooted, adobe reader 11 entry comes back but it is  like false entry as no size given. please help to succesfully install Adobe Reader 11.  also tried:
    1. uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled  2. installed from different locations  3. removed adobe key from
local machine and tried to install

Seriously, I do not understand what is going on - I have never seen this before!
The MSI installers are usually used in corporate environments to roll out installs on multiple machines.  However, you can use it like a normal (EXE) installer; it will just go through fewer steps than the EXE.  Not sure if it will improve the situation, but it's worth a try.
Another thing to try is to uninstall these remaining entries using Microsoft Fixit: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall - also no guarantee, but also worth trying.

  • Signature option in Adobe Reader.

Why is the signature option in Adobe Reader one "greyed out" for iPad users, you can no longer access your signatures and add them to a document ?

    Hi F & F,
If you are really looking to create a cryptographically secure digital signature then you need to create a custom signature appearance. If on the other hand all you want to do is add a picture of your signature you need to create a custom stamp. In order to create a digital signature you need to have access to a digital ID (a public/private key pair), and before going through all of the steps of creating a custom signature appearance is this what you intend to do? If so then check out 4   Custom Signature Appearances — Digital Signatures Guide for IT for help in creating the signature appearance. If you just want to create a stamp then look at the tips at  Adobe Acrobat X Pro * Create a custom stamp.

  • My view options in Adobe Reader 11.0.10

I would like to know the view options in Adobe Reader 11.0.10.
I don't want the Bookmarks Pane to appear on the left side of the window.
I don't want the Export PDF pane to appear in the right side of the window.
If anyone has a suggestion, feel free to respond!

On the right side of the window, the pane on the right side of the page says Fill & Sign Tools.  I want to hide this pane.  I don't see Fill & Sign Tools as an item in the View Menu or sub-menus.

Are there any costs for an adobe reader software distribution license ?

No (except for the costs of having your legal team check the license). You do need to read the license carefully, you are making specific commitments and there are specific restrictions.

I typed in data into the highlighted text box, and then tried to print my form.  However, when printed, the copy only showed a portion of my answer.  Is there a way to expand Adobe Reader's highlighted text to show my full response, or should I make my responses only as long as the highlighted portion allows?

While printing any pdf file it will print the visible text only. To overcome this, the form needs to be dynamic so that it expands in layout while entering more data. Usually dynamic forms are developed by Adobe LiveCycle Designer.

  • Is there a way to add Adobe Reader directly to my website for legal documents?

Is there a way to add Adobe Reader directly to my website for legal documents? It is on Wordpress. [link removed by moderator]

Technically, you CAN embed a pdf so that it opens within the page. Use <embed src="http://yoursite.com/the.pdf" width="500" height="375">
But you'll want to test it with all browsers (assuming this is something you are trying to accomplish).

  • Is there / will there be / a "Read Out Loud" access option for Adobe Reader on the android?

  • No option in adobe reader 9.2 when opening a pdf file to "save as" a tiff file

Hi, I want to save a pdf file as a tiff file.  I have Adobe Reader 9.2 and windows xp.  In the Adobe website, it says I can export or convert a pdf file into different formats.  However, when opening an existing pdf file, there isn't an option to export or "save as" in the Tools menu or in the Preferences under Edit.  The reason I want to save a pdf file into a tiff file format is because when I use the program Microsoft Office Document Imaging to open a tiff file, it allows me the option to move selected pages & save it as a new file.  In a pdf file, I have to save all the pages as one file & I don't necessarily want all the pages.   My only other option is to print the selected pages I want from the adobe file document and then scan it into a tiff file but I would hate to use paper just for that purpose.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

You can use a tiff printer driver:

  • Form Fields Only option in Adobe Reader - any extensions

My clients only have adobe reader but they need to print pre-populated pdf forms on to preprinted legal forms. For this i need the Form fields only option in the Print dialog but thats only available in Acrobat pro and the clients cannot have pro version. So wondering if there are any extensions for the reader to get this feature enabled.

Thank you Alheit for your response but that is not an option for me because the designed pdf templates are read by a java program developed using an api called itext and that api is merging (removing) the non-printable background into a single page/layer. I also tried using the non-printable image layer but my program api is merging them into a single layer/page.
That is why i ended up asking for the question if Adobe is providing any extension for Adobereader to show the Form Fields Only option ?

  • Is there a way to force Adobe Reader to grab the sign on ID for a digital stamp?

I work for a state Agency and we want to use digital stamps as our signatures on our internal documents. I have created the form in LiveCycle and I know that in Adobe Reader by default the stamp will use the person's sign on ID for the stamp and then the person adds their name and other information.
However, if the person right clicks the stamp, and edits the Identity and puts in another sign on ID number, such as their supervisor's and stamps the document, there is no way to tell that both of those stamps, with different sign on IDs and names, were created by the same person.
If there is a script I can enter in LiveCycle, that when the form is opened in Adobe Reader, that would lock the Identity field of a stamp created in Adobe Reader from allowing a change to the sign on ID, then that would solve our problem and maybe the problem for other state agencies wanting to follow suit.
The digital signatures are even worse. I made one in my name, my supervisor's name and my dog's name, attached them all to a document, validated all the signatures and they look absolutely authentic. Why would Adobe make digital signatures like that? If we could just find some evidence within the data showing that all the signatures were applied by the same person or on the same computer, then we could use them. But the stamps at least grab that unique sign on number that we use and applies it to the stamp if the user doesn't alter it.
I'm on a time crunch as we hoped to launch this after the first of the year but our attorneys are saying, "uh, uh" until something can be done to prevent fraud. We have over 3,000 people in our agency so EchoSign would be out of the question.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions.

You will not get what you need using stamps, especially if you ever want to use dynamic XFA forms.
The digital signatures that were signed with a self-signed digital ID won't fully validate unless the user chooses to trust the corresponding digital certificate first. You should only trust a digital certificate if you trust its source. The problem is using self-signed IDs will be difficult to use on the scale you're talking about.
Digital signatures are the best approach for your needs. They can provide both nonrepudiation of document origin as well as document integrity. You just have to figure out how to implement a solution you can afford.
You agency can become its own certificate authority and issue certificates to its employees. You'd just have to find a way to implement and manage such a system.

  • Help finding optimize option in Adobe Reader XI

I have Adobe Reader XI and I need to optimize the background before I print my documents. I can't find the optimize option anywhere. I looked up tutorials for my version and I do not have the same options that are shown.

For some reason my scanned documents print out with a light blue background. My coworkers have an older version of Adobe and showed me how to go into the optimize option and change the settings so it prints without the background being blue. My adobe doesn't have the same options.

  • Why are there free fonts included with Adobe Reader?

I noticed that there is a folder with free Adobe fonts included with Adobe Reader. The fonts are Courier Std, Minion Pro and Myriad Pro.
Why are these fonts included? Will these fonts be included with future versions of Adobe Reader?

The fonts are only for use with Adobe Reader. You should not attempt to use them for any other purpose. They are included with software that is free of charge, but still subject to license and may not be copied to other systems...
All versions of Adobe Reader have included some fonts, but they change.
They are mainly there to help Adobe Reader show PDF files that do not embed fonts, to generate substitutions in a wide range of sizes and shapes.
