Is there an optimal luminance value for LCD monitors

Hi you all,
I use Lacie 319 high end monitor as my primary monitor and "generic" Fujitsu as my secondary monitor (for PS tools etc.) I have calibrated the monitors with Spyder Elite 3, which also measures the ambient temperature of the room. Based on that measurement it suggests 140 cd for the white point (brightness) to calibrate the screen for. If you do this the prints printed with Epson 4900 (as well as with my previous Epson 4800) print far too dark. The colours are rendered for the printer with Image Print RIP (Colorbyte software). When I calibrate my monitor down to 80 cd the prints are quite OK although still a tiny bit too dark. My question is should I do the LR of PS optimisation of my pictures in the 140 cd monitor brightness and then reduce monitor brightness mechanically to the cd value which gives optimal brightness of the print (some 70 cd?) . Of course I have to adjust the brightness of the picture to be printed viasoft proofing. If continue doing as I do now  making all my picture adjustments using a very low monitor brightness (ideal for the printed result) am I working in a less than optimal area for the monitor to deal with colors. Also do many of the folks in the internet see my pictures too light because they are using much brighter monitors than what I used to adjust the pictures.
Having asked the question I do know that many things affect on how you see or perceive the colors as well as the brightness of the print. So the answer is not that it depends on where you look your prints. I know the measured ambient light of my "lab" (was a photographer already in the time of film) suggests that I should use 140 cd as the brightness value of my monitor. Doing so produces prints far too dark when looked at the same ambient light. Using 80 (or 70 to be exact) cd monitor brightness gives good print results when the prints are looked in the same (as above) ambient light. My question is am I no adjusting my pictures too light for those using the "default" monitor brightness and is the color management of LCD monitors up to standard if you dial them as down as was customary for the big old CRTs.
yours Kari

General rule of thumb is:
80 - 90 cd/m2 for print
130 - 140 cd/m2 for screen
What I do:
Edit everything (print and screen) on a 80cd/m2 monitor. It works out very well.
Sounds like you're on the right track.

  • Windows XP Driver For LCD Monitors

    Hi!
This topic may be out of place so apologies in advance but i was wondering if Toshiba have created any Windows XP Display drivers for LCD Monitors?
I have a Toshiba 26WL36 LCD monitor capable of producing a resolution of 1280 by 768. However, the quality of the picture decreases as the resolution is increased.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks For your time.

    Hi Jav
If some driver were created it would be probably delivered with the LCD Monitor. The quality and screen resolution depends on graphic card.
Sorry but it is not known to me that any LCD display need a driver.

  • Is there another way valid values for arguments?

Hi, I need to know if when you are using a presentation that change the valid values of the argument dinamically is possible to change valid values?
There is an argumentValidValues() but when I put:
    array = argumentValidValues()
nothing changes, does any one know if this is possible or if there is another way to do it?
    Thanks in advance

You can refresh the valid values for an attribute (typically shown in a combo dropdown) in a BPM Object's presentation if you invoke the logic:
// note that this logic has to have double
// quotes surrounding the attribute's name
    refreshValidValues("customerName")
This assumes that the attribute (customerName in this example) has its valid values derived from a "dynamic method" instead of a "static list".
When the logic shown above is run, the method associated with the attribute is automatically run and you should see your values in your combo drop dow get refreshed.
Please be careful to include the double quote characters in the logic. You'll be tempted to type:
// this logic will NOT work because it does not have the double quotes
    refreshValidValues(customerName)
This is a common mistake and will cost you a day of scratching your head while you're trying to figure out what went wrong.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

  • What target settings for LCD monitor calibration?

I have recently installed Spectraview II to calibrate my NEC LCD 2180WG monitor but have some doubts on which target settings to use as there are different opinions on color temp, gamma and intensity choices.
I use my system purely for photo post-processing and printing on color calibrated printers. I use AdobeRGB color space and have no interest for processing images for web.
    - What color temp do you use/recommend? D50, D65 or something in between? I see that some folks use D65 and others swear by D50.
    - What about Gamma choice 1.8, 2.2 or L* ? Same here, no common choice here too.
    - Lastly what about intensity (brightness in terms of cd/mm2)?
NEC recommends Target Settings for Printing, which are D50, 1.8 gamma and Max. Intensity, but I'm not sure.
I'd appreciate if you could recommend correct settings for my type of work.
    Thank You

    Charles,
I arrived at 5100K by measuring a few of my favorite printing papers with my spectrophotometer. This was a good compromise (most measured between about 4800K and 5300K). I confirmed the results by trying various calibrations them comparing the monitor to prints (using custom printer profiles). Anywhere near 5000K looked great, but 5100K was the best match of the bunch. I used 5000K lighting for viewing (Solux and Philips light sources).
Luminance settings were done in a similar fashion. First I compared a ppure white Photoshop document (on the monitor) to the intensity of a sheet of white printing paper displayed under my viewing light. With the monitor luminance set to the 85 cd/m2 range, the two documents look about the same brightness of white. I try to view my prints under "moderate" light levels rahter than ultra bright levels, since I know they won't be lit by spot or flood lights when placed on a wall. If you do have spots on your hung prints, there is a case to use a higher luminance level on your monitor. Anyway, on many LCDs, if you set the luminance too high, your blacks can start to look a little washed out. When set to about 85 cd, my tonal range in the print is a great match to my monitor. If I have the monitor luminance set to 100 or higher, I find that my prints look dark and muddy in comparison (unless viewed under unrealistically bright lights). So, a lot of trial and error, plus some initial brightness comparisons.
Gamma is a tougher one. I have a special viewing target that I bring up in Photoshop (Lab based to prevent any possible conversions). When viewed in Photoshop at full magnification, it helps me to set the gamma, which affects mostly the midtone density. On my LCD, I found )again by trial and error) that 2.0 gave me the best tonal distribution. My old CRT worked best at 1.8 gamma, and other LCDs sometimes work best at other gamma settings, such as 2.2.
The above settings work beautifully given my equipment, my viewing levels, ambient working conditions, etc. My monitor to print match is excellent from both a color and tonal range standpoint. Hope that helps clarify my thinking and approach.

  • Is there an optimal disk format for logic

I'm about to receive my new mac pro 3ghz, 3 x 10,000 rpm raptor drives and one 250 gig apple drive. I'm planning to use the first raptor for the OS, 2nd raptor for logic audio, and the third raptor for sample streaming. I plan to use the apple disk to back stuff up.
My question is, (and it might be a stupid one) is there a preferred way to format the disks? Should i simply format all disks with the normal "mac os extended" ?
PowerMac G4 dual 1.25 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   about to get mac pro 3ghz

I don't think you can turn off journaling on system partitions anymore. Journaling allows for quick data recovery in case of a crash etc... so for the boot drive don't turn that off (even if you could). It won't affect the performance of logic because you'd put everything else on the other drives.
That said, you have enough drives and horsepower to maybe build a RAID array, have you considered that? You could probably do a RAID level 5 with those drives giving you nice fail over and increased performance, yes more so than 3 separate drives.
    Just a thought.

  • Standard value for performance monitoring

    Guys,
I am looking into performance monitoring in the RWB bacause I think our production server is too slow. I get an average processing time per message around 60 sec, +/- 30 sec depending on the volume going through. This is obviously an unexceptable value...
But I was wondering, are there standards set for these values to indicate when performance is too (s)low? Any reference docs available from SAP?
    Thanks

There are various factors need to be considered. 60 seconds happening for almost all interfaces or only some specific. If only for some interfaces, then check the message volume size. SAP recommends message size up to 5 mb for optimum performance. Also security layers such as https/ssl and message level security such as encryption or digital signing/verify could cause some additional delay in processing too.
Fixing Hardware is easy... You go for the SAP recommended spec.
If you are using PI 7.1 or above use Message Packaging configuration. This will help considerable boost in performance.

  • Is there a threshold value for a tablespace

    Hi All,
Is there a threshold value for a tablespace
like Free space must be % Free
Bz i have only 9MB of free Space
    Please clarify me.
    Thanks
    Arjun

Hi arjun, once your data reaches the threshold value of tablespace free space automatically it will throw error. so there is no specific value for that. but you need to keep an eye on free space so as to avoid any interruption for the transactions. even the transaction will resume if you enable resumable management and adding a datafile or resizing a datafile when transaction halts.then your transaction will continue as normal.

  • How do I get a new value for the service name field and update it in Connection Properties?

I am running Windows Vista. I just upgraded to Firefox 4. When I try to log on to the internet, it tells me the proxy server is refusing connections. A diagnostic reported Error 815 and said the remote server is not responding because there is an invalid value for the "Service Name" field. It said to get a new value and update it in Connection Properties. How do I do this?

When you create a new film script, the first page you see is a title page.
The page after this title page is the one where you generally type in your scenes.
It looks like you are facing some issue and not able to delete any text.
Can you please send me this script so that I can have a better look at your issue?
You can save this script to disk by using option 'File -> Save to disk'. This will create a '.stdoc' file on your system.
Just mail this '.stdoc' file to me at 'roverma <at> adobe <dot> com'

  • How to identify there is no translation value in Value Mapping

    Hi ,
I am using value mapping to translate one of the fields of data. Whenever the input has a translation value, the output is the translated value. But when there is no translation value for the given input in the runtime cache, the output is the input itself. But my requirement is to either error out or send a blank value as output when it doesnt find a corresponding translation value for the given input.
Example:(A,1)(B,2)(C,3) are the values present in the value mapping runtime cache. When the message looks for value mapping for A , as expected it gives an output of 1. Similarly for B and C.
But if the input is "Z", the output is "Z" since there is no lookpu value fo r"Z",which is an anamoly.
Please let me know if you had a prioir experience on this issue and a solution to this.
    Thanks,
    Valli.

U can call value mapping functionality in UDF. Write a UDF with VM parameters.... Validate in the Source Value( U can also raise exception in the UDF).

  • Hex character value for InDesign frame break

I have been able to identify that the hex value for a carriage return in InDesign is "000D". Is there a specific hex value for InDesign's frame break character?

Through internal magic. There are more codes that are "magic" inside an InDesign document. \u0016 for example, is the code for a table, and you can search for it too. But you cannot insert a table by putting "\x16" in the Replace field. Same with anchored object -- \uFFFC -- and various other magic markers.
I promised "a tip or two" but the only way to bring a frame break in from beyond ID itself is through a Search-and-Replace in ID after you loaded your text. Insert some unique code in your software in place of these frame breaks (something simple like "{FrameBreak}" ought to do it; unless your text may already contain this particular sequence, then you have to make up something on your own), and after placing the text into ID, search for this text and replace it with the code "^R", which is "Frame Break" according to the Find/Replace Text drop down menu.

  • Sun One Web Server 6.1 max value for ChunkedRequestBufferSize

    Hi,
I was wondering if there was a maximum value for ChunkedRequestBufferSize.
I have an application that is sending chunked data to the server and I don't really know what the size of the chunks will be.
I'd like to set a max.
I know the default is 8K.
Just wondering if there is a value. Though common sense would tell me it would depend on the heap size :).
    Thanks for your help

Yes, the buffer is allocated from the heap. It must be less than 2GB and small enough to fit on the heap.

  • Windows 8.1 forgets dpi / display size settings for one monitor on almost every reboot

    I use TV 32" with 1920x1080 and cintiq 13" with 1920x1080
when I boot my PC the resolution is fine but DPI is wrong.
In smaller monitor It's look like DPI is higher than the bigger one.
I already set dpi to be the same (smallest 100%) but it's not work until I do something to change display setting.
It's really annoy me. This problem is not happen when I use windows 8
Only solution I found is turn off
    "Turn on fast start-up".
When I do that It's boot like what I want. every monitor is the same DPI.
But it'll make my boot time longer.
It should be just start up windows and use the same dpi from the start.
So I think this problem is a bug in windows 8.1
    Best regards

    Thank you for reply.
I've already used the latest graphic card driver. But It's won't help this issue.
In registry editor. I check those variables then value of them is already set like that blog suggest.
So , it look like when windows start-up(with fast start-up) It use something like
suggest value for different monitor size instead of what I set in control panel. But when I turn off fast start-up windows use my setting value.
And I think there are a lot of people who got the same problem as me.
    Here is an example.

That would be software. And, you said "upload." That's "uploading software." Why do you question what you stated?
I don't know where you even want to upload this software. The only way it can be downloaded to a device is through the iTunes store. Do you even know what you want to do?

How to set the optimal value for this application?

    Hi,
    >>With the above setting I have yet to get any errors due to cursor limits. A good trade off memory v issues.
To see if you have set OPEN_CURSORS high enough, monitor v$sesstat dynamic performance view using the SQL below for the maximum opened cursors. If your sessions are running close to the limit, maybe you should increase the value of OPEN_CURSORS.
    select max(a.value) as highest_open_cur, p.value as max_open_cur
    from v$sesstat a, v$statname b, v$parameter p
    where a.statistic# = b.statistic#
and b.name = 'opened cursors current'
    and p.name= 'open_cursors'
group by p.value; In addition, I advise you to take a look at your PL/SQL code in order to see if the explicit cursors have been close (if it was the case), or if your SQL code can be tuned ...

  • Optimal value for shmmax and shmall

    Hi Experts,
Am new to the database administration side. Need help/suggestions from you all. My requirement is narrated below:
I was going the kernel parameter for oracle 10gr2. But I have a doubt the following two parameters.
    kernel.shmall=2097152 (Default)
    kernel.shmmax=2147483648 (Default)
Also I know that this is the recommended value for these two parameters. But just want to check if I have physical RAM of 4GB then what should be the optimal value for these parameter.
Also can anyone suggest how to set the optimal value for these parameter.
    Thanks

You can always set to the "Install" size and after it completes reduce them. You can move them down 25 to 30 percent in most cases.
The default size for SHMALL in RHEL 3/4 and 2.1 is 2097152 which is also Oracle's recommended minimum setting for 9i and 10g on x86 and x86-64 platforms. In most cases this setting should be sufficient since it means that the total amount of shared memory available on the system is 2097152*4096 bytes (shmall*PAGE_SIZE) which is 8 GB. PAGE_SIZE is usually 4096 bytes unless you use Big Pages or Huge Pages which supports the configuration of larger memory pages.
SHMMAX should not exceed 4294967295 on a 32-bit system. On x86-64 platforms, SHMMAX can be much larger than 4GB since the virtual address space is not limited by 32 bits.
If SHMMAX is too small, you can get error messages like :
    ORA-27123
I almost always go with the recommended settings even on tiny 1GB systems.
With a 4GB system these probably are not worth changing.
