I have FCE 4 and want to buy FCP now. Do I have to buy Final Cut Studio for $999? Is there any upgrade available?

FCE to Final cut Pro

I am about to start a long project. If I start and edit in FCE, will Final cut Pro be able to open the project for "online finishing"? ( I want to be able to have the audio track sweetened and color-timing accomplished? I am shooting the project in NTSC, and would also like to up-rez the project to HD.
I am a pro cameraman, but have never really done non-linear editing. I was once very good at film editing (tape-splicing on a flatbed machine : i.e. I am from another civilization). Thank you and truly!!

FCE project can be opened as it in FCP but once saved in FCP cannot be opened in FCE again.
Upscaling SD to HD is not a good idea. HD is 5 to 6 times taller so you will get a very pixelized image. There are some professionnal solution like Red Giant Instant HD solution:

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro on Separate Machines?

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro from the same Final Cut Studio license on separate machines? We hadn't realised when we bought Final Cut Studio that it wouldn't allow this. Our editor doesn't use motion, and while I mainly use After Effects on our motion graphics machine, I was wanting to try using motion for some particle effects. Unfortunately, it won't let me open it while Final Cut is running on our editor's machine. I can understand not letting two copies of same application run under the same serial number at the same time, but it would be nice to be able to use both programs that we own concurrently. At very least it would be good to warn you that this isn't possible in the product description, not in some fine print license agreement once you have already bought the software.

I do not know of any software, in any platform that can operate from the same license over a network simultaneously.This is the exact reason for the existence of Volume Licensing. If for example a project ran in each one of the included applications from different sources that were not an active network, I doubt you would have a problem.Like, doing a project at work and geting the outcome with the Powerbook at home...Sorta!

Moving from Linux to Final Cut Pro, Need Help Creating Same Mpeg-4 videos

I am seeking to move into Final Cut Pro to develop these types of videos that I have previously been creating in Linux.
How can Final Cut Pro make these videos in the format specified below (OR VERY CLOSE TO IT)?
Please let me know what settings with screenshots, etc. will make final cut pro output in this way.

Not likely.
Easiest solution is to produce your edited material in FCP and then move the fully rendered, self-contained movie, in whatever format you are producing, to your Linux machine and use its encoder/transcoder.
Compressor will do the job for MP3 and MP4 but you will need to purchase the DIVX codec or transport it to your Mac. You need to talk to DiVX and you need to open the manual for Compressor. Compressor is not easy to learn how to use i na day but whatever you were using on your Linux box was much more difficult to learn.

I have just been given a whole load of GoPro footage to work with that is very noisey (video noise) and needs some work.
FCP X still doesn't seem to like 'Neat Video' which works well (at times) but apart from the hang-ups takes a lifetime to render. The 'FxFactory' module isn't really doing it for me... Has anyone tried the 'Pixel Studios' plug in contained in their ProLens offering?

I'm editing my anti domestic violence tvc. In the living room, the children are fighting and next door, in the bedroom, the parents are fighting. Problem is, I've already recorded the parents' argument sounds in a sound booth and how do you make it sound like is coming from next room in final cut pro ?

If I understand you:
try, lowering levels, adding eq to reduce high frequencies, increase low frequencies, use stereo panning to move sound to a location approximating "next door." There are lots of EQ settings you can play with.

Trouble with the round trip from Color to Final Cut Pro

I have edited a home movie together. I then have sent the sequence to Color for grading and then after completing the Color changes and Rendering. I sent it back to Final Cut Pro. It starts out working fine but during the transfer process it stops at somewhere between 50% and 60%. It is during the "Importing XML Data" phase. It just sits there and does not change and I have to force quit to get out of it. The exact same thing happens when I try to round trip from Soundtrack Pro 2 back to Final Cut Pro. So I am unable to make use of the changes I make in these programs.
This is a round trip process that I have successfully made many times before. Nothing has changed. I am working in Final Cut Studio 2 with the latest updates on an Intel Mac. Any advice on how to remedy this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to say where the XML interpretation is getting lost... That it stalls at 60% could mean a number of things. If you have a cuts and dissolves simple timeline, that should not be an issue. Something is causing a corruption, though and it could be a media type, a filename (which can break folder paths), a filter or motion tab which generates an invalid value, or a recompression that violates the sequence settings.
At this point, I start cutting up the original sequence and roundtripping it until it works, or breaks and then try to figure out what's different. Often there's something hidden like an imbedded recompressor in a nested sequence or something like that, that will allow COLOR will load, grade, render, and then not know what to do to re-write the export XML, or re-imbed it illegally.
There are a lot of things that FCP does that editors take for granted that COLOR utterly cannot cope with -- but may deceptively carry along and then crash on the next step.

FCE or Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 ?

I was thinking about buying FCE and start playing around with my new Camcorder. I already have Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 on my powerbook G4. Can I just use that program since it came already installed on my laptop. Or would it be wise to start off with FCE?
One more thing can install the program on an external drive instead of my powerbook because Im running out of room on my harddrive? Thanks

This has gone away from the purpose of this thread, but you assign the scratch disk when you first launch the application, or in the system settings. If you've assigned an external drive it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended. This is done use the Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities.

Batch Exporting Clips from timeline in Final Cut Pro X

So ive looked at many forums and many sources and I know this isn't the first time this question has been asked.....but I was
wondering how I would be able to batch export clips from the timeline (about 100 or so) to use as Content for VJing (live media manipulation). Is there a simple way to acomplish this in Final Cut Pro X... I have heard remours that you can cut multiple clips in Quicktime Pro 7 but im not sure how eficiant this is, I also have heard that this is allot easier to acomplish in Final Cut Pro 7. If anybody knows a simple (and quick way) to acomplish this Im all ears!

If you want to batch export parts of your project, I believe that you'd better served by an external utility, like QTCoffee. Export your movie to Quicktime, and then use QTCoffee to create the various bits in one, er... batch.

You could try Frameline 47, this application is designed to network together video workstations, and enable content and metadata to be shared. It also supports Final Cut XML, which you can use with FCE.

Soundtrack pro from Logic Studio & Final Cut Pro(please read)

i recently purchased a mac pro an logic studio for soundtrack after using a mac at school.
we had the soundtrack version that came bundled with final cut pro and i have noticed that some of the samples that are in the final cut version differ from the logic version ( nuther lectro, ethnic FX loop and so on). im wondering if there is any way of obtaining loops from the final cut version for use with my logic version..

i purchased the logic studio suite and it came with 5 jam packs..the other one i spoke of that was bundled with final cut had no additional content outside of the stock basic content in the core program, so my new question would be, if i can locate the individual samples from an earlier version, could i just drop them into the library for use??

Upgraded to FCS 2 and Final Cut Pro 6 crashes when I try to open it...

So yeah I had Final Cut Pro 5... I upgraded to Final Cut Pro 6 and when it is loading effects in start up it crashes every time. I have restarted the computer ect... but it didn't help.
Any idea what I can do?

The best way was to do an install on a clean disk (in other words install OS on blank partition and then install Studio 2 without installing earlier versions) A bunch of threads on install and the rest.

iPhoto and Aperture videos don't show up in the Photos browser in FCP X. Apple's directions (can't recall where I saw them) state to open both programs (FCP X and iPhoto) next to each other and then drag and drop the videos from iPhoto (or Aperture) to an event in FCP X.
Not how you'd hope it worked, but it works nontheless.

This is a miniDV camcorder. For this camcorder you must use Firewire.
If your MBP has Firewire 800, you need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.
The camera must be plugged into wall power, not batteries only.
Set the camera to Play, and iMovie should recognize the camera and an import screen should appear.
