Is there any danger in opening an unstructured document in structured Framemaker?

I know that it's not a good idea to open a structured FrameMaker file in the unstructured FrameMaker interface, and that there's a warning about this when you try.
What's come up for us however is whether there's any problem with people using the Structured FrameMaker interface to edit unstructured files.
We have a machine set up for people who are not expert or highly skilled with FrameMaker, and since we have both structured and unstructured documents, the question is whether to leave it set as the structured interface, or the unstructured interface. They're just making small content edits in most cases, for anything more involved they ask me.
So:
If it's set to unstructured:
If they open an unstructured document, all is well.
If they try to open a structured document, they will see the warning. I can tell them what to do if they see it. (This might mean telling them to change to structured, or just to give me that file to edit instead.)
If it's set to structured:
If they open a structured document, no problem.
If they open an unstructured document however -- is there any danger if they edit it that way? Will saving from structured FrameMaker change anything about the file?
In the latter case, opening unstructured in structured Frame, there's no warning, it just opens with a blank structure view window, if they even open that window.
I have to imagine that Adobe separated the two interfaces for a reason, but possibly it has more to do with just not needing all of the resources like XML and DITA menus when you're in unstructured.
I realize that the real answer is not to let people unskilled with FrameMaker use it to edit documents, but this is the way things are for the moment. If it's set to unstructured, they'll have to switch over in order to edit structured files, and then be sure to remember to switch back. Leaving it set as structured in some ways seems the best choice, but only if it won't damage unstructured files that way.
Thanks

As Matt notes, the extra structured stuff in the interface may be confusing to users familiar with unstructured FM. However, it will also be confusing when unstructured FM users try to find and use the paragraph and character catalogs, and some other unstructured features that are perfectly usable in structured FM, but are not immediately visible in the structured interface.
One way to improve and simplify the FM environment for users who are able to edit text, but shouldn't be manipulating other tools, is to customize the interface. Search Google for terms like "customizing framemaker" without quotes. Recent FM releases feature the ExtendScript ToolKit, which offers new ways to customize FM, in addition to those in the older methods of modifying the maker.ini and configui files. One option if you follow this path would be to create custom Windows icons that call startup scripts which then call FM. Before the script launches FM, it can copy specified configuration and ini files into the user's environment, so that when FM starts up, it's got just what you design it to have. A simple approach here would be customize unstructured FM's interface to have only the minimum set of menu items and other things you specify, and launch unstructured FM. An icon could be named for the user, like SallyJonesFM, or for the task, like FMUnStrEditing.
I'm sure some folks on the forum have taken an approach like this for their users, and can offer some advice from their vast experience.

  • Is there any danger in closing your apps completely?

I used to have an android phone and I read were you should just not kill your apps.  Is there any danger in closing your apps completely on the iPhone 4s? To do this I hit the home button twice, hold down on one of the apps until it starts bounching and then close them.
    Thanks!
    Sikorasc

    No.
I too came from an Android and the stupid "need" to close apps all the time in fear of battery drain or performance drop.
From what I've read and been told by Apple specialist at Verizon, there's no need.
Its part of the Apple multitasking experience.
The way I read it and had it explained is, the App running  freezes in its current state once home button it hit.
You open another App and the previous one is froze in standby. Then you can switch between them and its fast
They call up much quicker. And they don't use battery while frozen.
They don't hurt performance either. I've had every App on my phone open at one point(accidentally) because I was used to Android and I never saw a performance drop.
I also leave them open all day and the battery life is same.
Apple says, if memory get slow, it will look at latest process vs biggest process and decide which to stop if need be.
You can close them if you like, it wont hurt, but its nice to have them open for quick use without the fear of battery drain.
A nice feature coming to Apple.
    Heres my battery life
I know some have reported bad usage.....and I believe them. But every one of those Ive read were rectified by either a configuration of push not. etc or just a faulty battery.

  • Is there any way to open a file with a .msi extension on my new mac?

I have Camtasia from the pc I was using. It has a .msi file extension for the installation file. Is there any way to open the Camtasia installation file with the .msi extension on my new Mac?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

That's a Microsoft program which requires Windows. You could run on your Mac if you install Windows on it.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • I want to connect the ipod directly to the car 's speakers without any amplifiers, is there any danger to burn the ipod?

I want to connect the ipod directly to the car 's speakers without any amplifiers, is there any danger to burn the ipod?

No, but it will not work. The iPod does not have an amplifier in it that is powerful enough to drive the speakers in your car.
So, do you have a stereo in the car, either factory fitted or one you have had fitted after it came out of the factory? If you do, check to see if the car's stereo either has a dedicated input for an iPod or an auxilary (aux input) socket.
Some modern cars (for example, my 2006 model Mazda 3) have stereos that can be fitted with iPod connectors. I paid to have one fitted to my Mazda's factory-fitted stereo. So now, I connect my iPod to the car's stereo via a dock connector and I have limited control of the iPod from the car's steering wheel. Some cars have more sophisticted control than mine does.
Alternatively, if the car's stereo has an Aux input socket, you only need to buy a headphone-to-headphone lead and connect from the iPod's headphone socket to the Aux input.
If you don't have either of those options, another method is to use a transmitter. These small radio transmitters are connected into the headphone socket of the iPod and then transmit the audio (like radio) so that you can tune your car's radio to the same frequency as the transmitter. You control the iPod as you do when using headphones. The sound quality will porbably not be as good as the dedicated dock connector method, but it's reasonable.

  • Is there any danger subjecting a WRE54g to below freezing temperatures?

Is there any danger subjecting a WRE54g to below freezing temperatures? I am using the repeater to relay an AP to a guard shack while working. I have the repeater in my car running on a power inverter about 500 feet away. I live in the northeast and winter temperatures can get below zero.

You can check this link and i think it will help you little bit. Check the specification and it might help you.

  • Is there any way to open an .xlsb file in numbers?

Our ad department has recently upgraded their windows PCs, and it seems the new default for Excel to save is .xlsb (excel binary workbook). Is there any way to open this in Numbers, or is my only answer to go over to them again and again, to get them to resave in .xls or .xlsx?

Ask them to resave as .xls
If they are polite enough, I'm quite sure that they may change their default format to .xls.

Do you mean Office 2008 and 2011 or do you really want Office 2001? I think you mean 2011 since Office 2001 wouldn't make much sense.
The Office uninstaller should be able to identify there are two versions and allow you to delete either one or both.

  • I have ip 3gs and ios 4.1 i want to upgrade it to download latest version of apps ,which ios will be compatible and is there any danger to update ios before i erased all settings and content and i tried to update but it failed .it is working properly

i have ip 3gs and ios 4.1 i want to upgrade it to download latest version of apps ,which ios will be compatible and is there any danger to update ios before i erased all settings and content and i tried to update but it failed .it is working properly but i want to update from itunes.iwill do back up but is there any other thing i will face after updating like it will jut show apple loge and will not work. please answer quickly

An iPhone 3GS is too old to update to the very latest iOS and you will never be able to use apps that are compatible.  The phone is just too old now in technology terms and the app makers have all moved on, so it's time to get a new phone.
Ideally, perhaps get an iPhone 4s or if you can afford it, an iPhone 5s or 5c which are the newest models.

Is there any way to open an VB6 execulatble application via a Sharepoint application page?

No, only thing you can do is add a link to a sharepoint application page that points to a vb6 executable, once the end user clicks that one, the client OS and end user decide what happens next.

  • Is there any way to open .mts files in Qicktime and FCPX?

Is there any way to open .mts files on the Mac? I am reffering ti opening them in Quicktime and in FCPX. My camera costs a LOT, and I think it's ridiculous that I can't open these files. I can't even find a decent conversion tool to do it for me. Please help!

I just checked this link and it's looks like FCPX have no problem to open it.
    http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/mts
    .mts is also called AVCHD.
I also check FCPX Documentation here : http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0.6/#ver2833f855
And it say it can support AVCHD videos.
VLC also support it for watching the video and anyway Quicktime X is useless with many codecs.
Check again to import files in FCPX as i can't test i don't have any .mts files.
    Hope this help.
You can read this also if you want to convert them : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1412182?start=15&tstart=0
I will say it's better to use Handbrake, anyway it's what i use.
