Is there any type of defragmenting for macs?

I am a new user...I'm curious...is there anything like this that I should perform every so often.
Thanks in advance!

Ah, corteasy! You sure know how to open a kettle of worms!
If you have a look at much of the discussion lower down in the thread that starts at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1527952&tstart=0 you will find this extensively discussed, with various links provided.
The "official" Apple answer is basically "not usually", though they point to a few exceptions (linked to in the thread I mention).
Fragmentation of files on Macs is rarely a problem while you have a nice empty HD. It can become a problem when the disc is close to full, however, as the Apple system essentially reduces "file fragmentation" by a process which can increase "free space" fragmentation. Eventually this reduces the effectiveness of the built in defrag routines.
For a general article on maintenance of OSX (even though it hasn't been updated fo rLeopard it essentially still all applies) it is hard to go past the article at http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html . Despite the slightly off putting name, its author, Randy Singer is a long term Mac Guru who was a coauthor of several editions of the excellent (but now superceded) "Mac Bible".
But don't expect this discussion to stop here. Many people have deeply held views about the question of fragmentation on macs and how to deal with it, both pro and anti! Ultimately it all boils down to the sort of work you do with your Mac, how full the HD is, and the like. I doubt that you will have to worry about it much, unless you are into working with large video files and the like, until you are down to the last 20% of free space on your HD (and even then some will deny that it matters, though I don't agree with them).
The MacAttorney link also includes some other good advice on regular maintenance processes.
Cheers

In your settings there is a section titled Accessibility - http://www.apple.com/accessibility/macosx/vision.html
Have a loot there (things like voice over to read text).
You might want to think about buying something though.  Dragon is the king of the hill for speech dictation and control - pair it with a decent USB headset and microphone (you can get really nice ones for $40-$70) and you almost never need touch the keyboard.

While the built in OS X features are good, the commercial stuff goes a lot further, just something to think about (I have a dyslexic relative who uses dragon and thinks its amazing).

  • Is there any thunderbolt card available for mac pro?

I have a blackmagic intensity extreme, which has thunderbolt port. But I am unable to use it with Mac Pro as there is no thunderbolt port on it. Any suggestions?

HP is now offering a Thunderbolt option for thier Z820 workstation model.
Actually, no. That computer was designed for thunderbolt from the start. It is a feature enabler card, not an expansion card.
I hope this will change soon, but not soon enough to hold my breath.
There will never be a thunderbolt card for Mac Pros.
    Two reasons:
1- Even the 2012 Mac pro used 2 year old hardware, that means even the very last Mac Pro Apple sold last month used 3 year old technology. Its not economical to make new hardware for old technology in a very small market.
2- Thunderbolt communicates directly with the CPU, GPU and PCIe hardware. That means they have to be designed to communicate with the thunderbolt controller. Since thunderbolt was introduced in 2011, a full year after the last Mac Pro (5,1) was designed, its hardware has no possible way to communicate with it.
Thunderbolt is not  "an extension of the PCIe bus" like eSATA is an extension of SATA, its an entirely different communication protocol.
If it were just an extension, it would be far cheaper and easier to implement and there would be more than just a handful of products on the market that support it. Right now thunderbolt is making Firewire look like a runaway success!

  • Is there any type of network compression for sql

I have a user trying to spool a select statement that is close to a 2 gig text file when its done..
the statement runs in 3 minutes when run on a sql client connected to a 1gig full duplex network..
but when connected to a 100Mb/half duplex network it takes 7 hours..
the obvious fix would be to upgrade the clients network.. but thats not my call.. and isn't going to happen..
I've offered to schedule it local, zip it, and send the zip.. but they don't want that..
is there any type of compression setting that could be specified..

I don't believe there is to be honest, but I haven't poured through all the documentation. This may be beneficial however: [Configuring Session Data Unit|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/network.102/b14212/performance.htm#sthref1395]

  • Is there any way to search for a term using the Firefox search field, and have the results automatically open in a new tab?

Is there any way to search for a term using the Firefox search field, and have the results automatically open in a new tab? When there was support for Google Toolbar, I was able to do this; now, whenever I want to search for something, I have to open a new tab to do it, and cut-and-paste my search into the search field in the new tab. I used to be able to highlight, drag, and drop something into the search field and have it automatically open in a new tab. This is enough for me to switch to Chrome . . .

Set a preference to have searches from the Search Bar (upper right) automatically open all searches in a new tab
#type '''about:config''' in the URL/Location/Address bar and press the Enter key
#if you see a warning, accept it (promise to be careful)
    #Filter = '''browser.search.openintab'''
#in the lower panel, double click the item (or right-click and choose "Toggle") to change the value to "true"
#close the about:config tab and test

    About Google toolbar............
Google decided that they will no longer produce the Google Toolbar for Firefox 5 and newer version. It is best to move on to other alternatives than to try any "hacks" to the toolbar that may or may not perform in the future. Future versions of Google toolbar will only work with IE7-9. Google Toolbar is not available on any other browser, even Google's own browser.

Is there a Blackberry Desktop Software for MAC OS 10.4.11?  Or something equivalent?
I recently switched from a palm treo to blackberry but didn't anticipate syncing issues with my mac until now.  The current BB desktop software seems only compatible with MAC OS 10.5, so I'm in a difficult position.

  • Is there any exit or badi for "F-59"?

    Hi,experts,
is there any exit or badi for "F-59" after "SAVE"?
      Thanks in advance.

    Hi ,
You can search an exit for your program by using:
CALL CUSTOMER statement ,it will give you all the function
exits in your program and then in their included you can set a breakpoint
and check which one gets triggered while the save option or
You can also search a BADI for any particular transaction ,
for that first go to T-Code-SE24 and give
    the Object Type as CL_ExitHANDLER.
Then double click on to Get_Instance Method and set
    a brakpoint on the line:
    CALL METHOD cl_exithandler=>get_class_name_by_interface.
Next step is to execute your T-Code f-59.
It will go into debugging mode.
Start debugging by writing EXIT_NAME in the checking area while debugging.
This EXIT_NAME will give the BADI'S used with each screen processed.
    Hope it helps
    Regards

  • Is there any types in transaction ?

    hi friends..
is there any types in transaction ?

    Dialogue Transaction
    Report Transaction
    OO Transaction
    Variant Transaction
    Parameter Transaction
In a dialog transaction, the program flow is determined by the sequence of screens. The screens that you call within a transaction are all part of a shared module pool (program with type 'M').
You must specify the initial screen of the transaction when you define a transaction code.
In a report transaction, you start a program with type 1 using a transaction code. A report usually receives data at the beginning (using a selection screen), processes it (for example, using a logical database), and then outputs data (a list).
When you define the transaction code, you can specify a selection screen and a report variant.
In the SAP Reference IMG, under "Basis Components" -> "Application Personalizaion" -> "Tailoring of Application Transactions", you can define transaction variants. These allow you to preassign values to fields within a transaction, define field attributes, or hide entire screens.
To run a transaction variant, you define a variant transaction. On the next screen, enter the name of the transaction and the name of the variant.
    Variant transactions are client-specific.
If you try to start a variant transaction and the corresponding variant does not exist, the transaction runs without a variant.
Parameter transactions allow you to preassign values to the fields on the initial screen.
If you supply all of the necessary entries for the initial screen in this way, you can suppress the screen when the transaction is executed.

  • Is there any in build support for CCD C32 document in JCAPS

    Hi,
Is there any in build support for CCD C32 document in JCAPS? I tried to find a lot, but could not.

    Hi soo.richard,
You say it could be intruders cutting in - same problem/solution as for any network I think. Access can be password protected or access limited via MAC address filtering. I'm not sure how Apple Tv works with a hidden SSID but that would be another option.
Airplay itself can be password protected through the airplay settings.
I'm not sure if Apple TV works with other authentication such as a password but maybe the manual will assist with this?
    Hope this helps.

  • I ther any SQL developer version for SunOS 5.10 (Unix)

Is ther any SQL developer version for SunOS 5.10 (Unix). If it is available, please tell me from where it can be downloaded and how it can be installed?

<p>You can use any of the downloads except the Mac or Linux ones.
<p>We separated out the Windows downloads because that's the largest audience we have. So there are 2: one is the full install, and one which allows users to point SQL Developer to an existing, installed JDK. This means that you don't end up with duplicate or even multiple JDKs installed. You can download either of these. If you don't have the JDK installed, you might as well install the full build. The other thing about the full install is that it includes an early JDK release and many users prefer to use the latest JDK.
<p>The entry for the "multiple platforms" is exactly the same build and code as the Windows without JDK. Both of these require you to download and install or already have a JDK installed.
<p>I try to make this page clearer for each release. It seems I'm not there yet!
<p>We certify on Windows, Linux and the Mac. There is a page detailing certification specifics see the home page of SQL Developer. We do not certify SunOS, but Unix platforms are supported. This means that you can use SQL Developer, but any issues you run into must be tested against a certified platform before we'll track the bugs.
