Is there any way to move footage from iPhoto to iMovie?

So I (mistakenly apparently) long ago imported some movies into iPhoto and used them on projects. Since I'm trying to slim down my iPhoto library, I really want to move those videos to iMovie events, and then move them off to my external hard drive.
Of course, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this through the interface without breaking my project. I imported the movies into a new iMovie event on the new hard drive, then closed iMovie, and tried to fixup the project by editing the Project plist file to point at the files in a new location. I was very suspicious while doing this though, because one of the video files had some extra attributes on it....iPhotoMovie was one, so I'm assuming somehow iPhoto vids are handled differently.
And indeed, when I loaded the fixed up project, it plays, but is really choppy, almost unplayable and well behind real time. Must have something to do with thumbnail renderings being messed up somehow? It's unusable anyway, whatever the cause. It's not the movies themselves, because the original clips preview fine, and the original project pointing at the iPhoto library copies (I left them because I had a feeling this would happen) also plays fine.
I'll take any method of getting that video out of iPhoto and into iMovie that keeps my project file working, aside from just re-doing the project, which I think is what I'm headed towards.

Note - in iPhoto folders do not hold photos thy hold other folders or albums
to easily move a photo bewteen events flag the photo and go to the destination folder and use the add flagged photos to select event command
