Is there any way to reset my admin password?

My wife somehow changed the password I had set up for her, and doesn't remember it. Without the password, I can't do updates.
I found something that said you can change the password with an Apple ID, but the option to do that stays grayed out even after I have entered her Apple ID.
Any suggestions? Can an Apple Store reset it for me?

If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

    Thank You

    No, Apple can't help.  Just connect the iPod to your computer and restore via iTunes. If necessary, place the iPod in recovery mode.  For that mode see:

    Forgot password to log on to phone, is there any way to reset?

    Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
    Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
    iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
    If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
    iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)

    Click here for information. If the option to have the answers emailed to you isn't available or doesn't work(the email may take a few hours to arrive), contact the iTunes Store staff via the link in that article.

    Please be aware that you are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums. These are user-to-user support forums, so in almost all cases the only people who will reply to your posts are, like me, your fellow users.
    As to whether you can work with Apple via email on this issue I can't say for sure, but you can contact them via this web page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/appleid/contact/
    and see if they can help. It's mostly going to be an issue of you being able to prove to them that you are the account owner.

  • When I try to create a sync account, it says that my email is already in use but I haven't set up an account. Is there any way to reset this?

    I fill out all of the information to get a new sync account, but it won't let me create it because it says that my email is already in use. Is there any way to get my information or just reset the information with it?

    Hi Russ!
    Apparently you already configured your account but you don't have nor the key or the password. You can get the password in the [https://account.services.mozilla.com/forgot following link] but you would need the Sync Key to sync your device to the rest of your devices.
    If you don't have the Sync Key the best thing you can do is to reset it, by deleting the previous account and creating a new one with the same user. You can perform this tasks from your [https://account.services.mozilla.com/ account dashboard].

  • Is there any way to prevent non-admin user accounts to receive software update prompts?

    I am the admin account user on our MacBook Pro, and there is one standard user account on it as well. Generally we are both logged on so we can quickly switch between user accounts and 'spin the desktop'.
    For some reason, all the software update notifications seem to be received when the standard user account is the active one.
    I know that the standard user cannot actually update without my account password and my Apple ID, but a) The notifications confuse the non-admin user, and she gets flustered, and b) Even if she manages to cancel them from the notification area, she then has to remember to tell me verbally that she had had one.
    Is there any way to stop her receiving the update notifications altogether?
    Running OS X 10.8.2 on MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in advance.

    You should be able to do this by unchecking the software update service in the system preferences to prevent the system from running the check as the "_softwareupate" user and passing it to the notification service that broadcasts to all user accounts. Then you can check for the software update in an admin account using the following Terminal line:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck -Check YES
    This line can be scripted via Terminal services to run on a schedule (ie, every few hours), and if there are found updates it will launch the App Store for that account and present them. Granted this approach circumvents the notification service, but should work. To try this, open TextEdit on your computer and in a new document choose "Make Plain Text" from the Format menu.
    Then copy and paste the following text into the new document:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
              <key>Label</key>
              <string>local.softwareupdatecheck</string>
              <key>ProgramArguments</key>
              <array>
                        <string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck</string>
                        <string>-Check</string>
                        <string>YES</string>
              </array>
              <key>StartInterval</key>
              <integer>21600</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    When done, save the document to your desktop as "softwareupdatecheck.plist" or anything as long as it ends with ".plist." Then get information on the file in the Finder to ensure its name ends with plist and not anything else like "plist.txt" (rename it accordingly in the Info window's "Name & Extension" section.
    With the file name appropriate, hold the Option key and choose the "Library" option in the Finder's "Go" menu. Then locate the folder called "Launch Agents" in the library and drag the text file to this folder. Then log out and log back into your account.
    This text file is a launch agent script that instructs the system to run the program arguments every 21600 seconds (6 hours) whenever the user is logged in. The program arguments here are simply those to check for software updates for the system. You can change this time interval to be any number of seconds you would like, but there are other options to use besides the "StartInterval" key for scheduling the task. This approach simply has it repeat every number of seconds, but you can use other options to have it only run on specific hours or days, or only have it run once when you log in, etc.
    If this works for you, then if you'd like to explore these other options write back here and we can go over them for you.

  • Is there any way to work around administrator passwords to reset?

    I have lost record of my administrator name and password for my iMac. Is there any way around it to reset it? There are multiple users and each time someone tries to log off, it requests administrator rights, forcing a hard shutdown.

    I don't understand why that should be happening. I'm not seeing anything, at least on my 10.6 in SysPrefs>Security, that would account for that.

  • Is there any way to reset my ipod, delete all content manually w/o itunes?

    My ipod is just jacked. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to send it off to be repaired. I would like to delete all my photos, music, etc before I send it off.. is there any way to modify your ipod without conecting to the pc? It will not connect to itunes and it is not recognised by any pc I try it on.
    THX!!

    This is from a previous post I did earlier. This also cleans the iPod out without wiping the firmware. Your iPod may not be toast after all.
    I was having the same problem as a lot of you where iTunes did not recognize my iPod. Now it does. Here's what I did.
    Disclaimer: I am no computer expert, just read ALOT of posts and figured my problem out.
    First problem I was having was that my cpu wasn't seeing the iPod as a mass storage device or iPod, just "removable disc". This was due to having my usb printer on. It was hogging resources I guess.
    Still didn't work in iTunes and locked it up. Reset using the iPod (whre the Apple logo comes up and have to select language initial screen)
    My problem included the following:
    When I looked at the "about" list on the iPod it said "Songs: 0, Capacity: 0, Format Unknown". Nothing there so the computer wouldn't read it I guess. When I right clicked in My computer/J:removable disk and got to the list with "properties" (took a while but it finally came up) it said the format was RAW, and there were 0 bytes on the iPod.
    This is the fix. On the same menu(removable disk - right click) there is selection called "Format..". Hit that and it should bring up a window to format the drive. Make sure it's set on "default Setting - or something like that", FAT32 and that the "Quick Format" is unchecked. Hit format and wait for it to finish.
    After I did this the computer shows the iPod and iTunes recognizes it and off I went on re-syncing all of the music in my playlist.
    Oh, and it did NOT delete the firmware in case you were worried like I was about that.
    Hope this helps!

  • Is there a way to change the admin password if you don't know the old one?

    This situation is a nightmare. I sold my iBook G3 lime green clamshell on eBay recently, and my buyer was a complete idiot. She sent me the computer back because she was a complete moron and couldn't figure out how to use it, so I accepted the computer back and gave her a full refund.
    When I ship out computers to the new buyers, I always do a erase and a fresh install, so when they receive the computer, they get the welcome screen. Well, of course she went through the whole process of completing her personal information, including her admin password. Well, the jerk forgot to mention to me what her password is so I could alter it to my information.
    Now I am trying to contact her and she isn't responding. It has been over 3 days. Is there ANY way that I can bypass this glitch? I have the original install disks, so I can do it that way? I will be so angry if I am stuck not having a password for this computer that was originally mine to begin with (and is now mine again), especially if I want to resell.
    HELP.

    Thanks. I had already accessed that after I posted this just from googling it. But I am in the process of doing a fresh install. I just rebooted holding down the C key so I can do it that way. I need to get my information in there anyway, not hers, and since I just received it a few days ago, I didn't add anything on there yet.
    What a hassle, but at least I know it's possible.
    Thanks for responding.
