Is there any way to shuffle playlists?

I browsed through the tutorials. I don't really understand what the shuffle option does in settings. And changing that setting doesn't seem to do anything when playing a playlist.

Thanks, that is what I did do. The shuffle put the first song in the playlist first so I didn't think it had shuffled it 55 song playlist, wish I had that kind of luck with the lottery.

The shuffle feature on the iPod is a great idea, but shuffling through all of my music at the same time just isn't very helpful. Usually when I want to listen to music, I'm in a certain mood and want to listen to a certain type of music, but the ipod doesn't know that. Is there any way to turn shuffle on, but to have it only choose from one genre, artist or playlist?

what you need is to go to the section (playlist) and play, e.g. go to artist (The Beatles), you should able to play all The Beatles songs in shuffle

The only 'workaround' would be to tag them all as music videos and then shuffle that.

No harm trying - it worked for music videos (unless they just realised what an obvious omission it was!)

Is there any way to link playlists?

I would like to have the ability to create multiple playlists that can shuffle songs within a single playlist and then move to the next specified playlist when all of the songs in he first playlist have been played once.
For example, I might be having a birthday party for my kid which will continue for the adults after the kid portion has ended. For the party I would like to create a playlist that has some kid friendly songs I want to shuffle and put enough music in it to last the duration of the kid portion of the party. Then I would like to create a second playlist which has more popular radio type songs that don't contain explicit language which the adults can enjoy but wouldn't be objectionable if the kids were still hanging around listening. I would like that playlist to automatically start playing when the first playlist finishes playing all of its songs once (or it would be cool if I could set a time limit for each playlist so once that limit is reached it would go to the next playlist, even if all of the songs in the previous list were not played). From here I would like to create a third playlist that will start after the second one is exhausted and can contain any type of music to play for the remainder of the evening after the kids have left or gone to bed.
I realize I could create these playlists and simply start the next one manually at any time I wanted during the day/evening but I would just like to set it and forget it.
I'm pretty sure this functionality doesn't exist but I thought I'd ask anyway in case anyone had some creative solutions or Apple could use it as a feature request enhancement for a future release of iTunes.

Okay so we are getting a new computer and I want to know if there is a way to save our play list so that I don't have to reenter each song back in to them? If any one can help I would appreciate it a lot.

Backup your entire library with this User Tip. Restore the backup onto the new computer. Deauthorise the old computer if you don't need to access protected content on it any longer.

Is there any way to have playlists of podcasts on a device with itunes Match?

I use a playlist to organize my podcasts on my iPhone. This enables me to listen to all unplayed episodes without having to keep choosing a new one. However, when I turn iTunes Match on on the phone, the playlist disappears from the phone. The podcasts from the playlist still come over. Additionally, once iTunes Match is on, I also cannot add podcasts to any plylist - new or existing. Does anyone have anyideas on how to resolve this? Or is it something Apple needs to fix in the next iteration of iOS?

You could try using the Custom Geometry extension and see how that works for you. ''I have been having problems with it on WinXP since Firefox 4.0 was released last year, maybe it will work better for you on Windows7.''

In Options for that extension setup additional Custom Geometry options ''(height, width, left, & top)'' with different offsets, and when you open an additional window use the drop-marker on the CG toolbar button to select the offset you want for that new window.
That drop-marker menu hasn't been working properly on my PC, but I use still use CG when running multiple Profiles - each with a different offset, so that I have access at the edge of the current window to "grab" another Profile when I want.

I was attempting to add new music to my iPod, and it didn't want to do it. Finally it did, but in the process it deleted all the music. I managed to bring back most of the music, but I can't find the playlists. Any help on finding them and getting them back?

Select the songs, press CTRL+I to Get Info, on the Options tab set Skip when shuffling to Yes.
If you want to the hide the songs from your main music view you could consider changing the media kind to audiobooks or podcasts if you don't mind the side effect of them showing up there instead.

Are you leaving the box unchecked to Manually manage music & videos? You don't need to to add anything to the iPhone.
Simply drag the playlist to the iPhone to manually add it.

As most of these are classical and folk, it is inappropriate to have them separated into songs that play any old time (ie, a movement from Beethoven's 5th symphony followed by a folk song followed by one excerpt from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, etc. Can I restore them all to the original albums and make sure the shuffle doesn't happen again?

I have noticed that too from time to time, I generally move the files into the correct folder and fix the index in itunes when one won't open, occasionally.

When you add columns or resize columns it only effects whatever playlist you are in.

When you create a new playlist, it will model the current column view of your (main music) library in list view.

this is not the problem. i know how to open iTunes when it starts up and to schedule the computer to shut down. what i want to is at 8 pm close all applications except iTunes, put the display to sleep and at 9 pm start playing a sleep playlist. i have been told many times not to look at the computer an hour before bed and i so i want to avoid having to look at it to start my go to sleep playlist.

Use a program like YamiPod to export the playlists back into iTunes.

Those playlists are "Smart playlists".
I don't think that you can create them from the phone itself. I've only ever been able to create a smart playlist within iTunes and then syncing the phone.
