Is there any way to speed up "repair disk" over internet recovery on OSX

After receiving a grey screen on startup, I finally have been able to boot into internet recovery on my 13" macbook pro. I'm running "Repair Disk" from the Disk Utility on my "Macintosh HD" drive. The estimated time is listed at "1 day, 23 hours", and has been stuck there for about 8 hours. It was 2 days and then did move to 1 day, 23 hours, but has not moved since.
Is there any way to speed up this disk repair? Would connecting over ethernet rather than WiFi help? Should I go somewhere with a faster internet connection than my home (1.1Mbps Down / 1.6 Up)? It can't possibly take over 2 days to repair the disk under normal conditions, right?

A hard wire connection should be faster than wifi.  If you have been running Disk Utility Repair for 8 hrs, try is again and if after an hour you still see the same result, I suspect that the HDD is faulty.
I would try an external boot HDD and see if the MBP can boot from that.  If it can, than that indicates that your internal HDD has failed and must be replaced.  Transfer as much data as you can.
Ciao.

    Hi,
I am restoring DB from previous cold backup of DB(on another machine).
but scp took app. 36hrs to copy datafiles(in .gz format)
is ther any way to speed up this copy for future.
    DB size is app 1600GB
    DB version 10.2.0.3

Use FTP or NFS instead of SCP - or split the file to be transferred in pieces and transfer in parallel.

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.

  • Hello, is there any way of having a reboot disk for lion that I'm downloading, like the one I have with snow leopard ?

Hello, is there any way of having a reboot disk for lion that I'm downloading, like the one I have with snow leopard ?

Once the Lion download is complete quit the installer and follow these directions. The file you need to make a boot disk disappears after you install Lion.
Egg Freckles | Burning A Lion Boot Disc
However, the Lion installation includes a recovery partition. It won't be of help if your entire HD dies but is very handy otherwise. This Knowledge Base article has a lot of good information about Lion's recovery partition.

  • Is there any way for my ipad to piggyback the internet from my iphone when i am not in a wifi area... The guy at the ATT

Is there any way for my ipad to piggyback the internet from my iphone without having to purchase a "plan" from ATT&T....The guy at the store said that I had to purchase a new plan with "so much" GB per month and loose my unlimited amount that I am grandfathered into with my current plan... any thoughts?

Unfortuneatly, you would have to give up your unlimited plan. In the US you would have to get the 2GB plan for $25 and add the teathering plan for $20 more.  The teathering plan would give you another 2GB of data for a total 4GB.

  • Is there any way to speed up a voicemail message once you've slowed it down?

On voicemail playback you can slow the voicemail down by selecting 4 while it's playing.  I've yet to find a way to speed it back up.  Is there any way to do this?  We have CUC 9.0.
    Thanks

It depends on your key maps if you have one configured however if I remember right, pressing 6 will speed up the voicemail.

  • HT1414 I am restoring a new iPad, using iCloud, with all my old iPads info, it is taking forever, all day and I'm still only an 8th of the way there.  Is there any way to speed up all the game down loads or is there a way to re-organize my game icons manu

I am restoring a new iPad, iCloud, with my old iPads info, it has been downloading all day and it's only 2pages in on my game apps out of about 10 pages.  Is there a way to speed this process, or is there a way to move my icons so that the games I want are at the beginning of the line as opposed to at the end because their name is alphabetically last

There is no way that I know of to speed up the download. Restoring from an iCloud backup will take as long as it takes in order to download all of your iPads contents. You commited to iCloud and now you have to wait until everything finishes downloading.
This relies on your WiFi connection speed, so unless you can speed that up, you just have to wait.

  • RDX drive -- terrible transfer rate (writing to drive). Is there any way to speed it up?

I've tried both drag and drop and the Robocopy command to copy files to a RDX drive (under Win 7 home and pro). It starts off fast anough (25MB/sec) but shortly slows down to something like 1.5 MB/sec.  Just 35GB takes well more than 2 hours to copy.  And of course if there are many files involved it just gets worse.
Are there any tricks for speeding up writing to the drive?

Yes. You can download the Firefox installer and copy the file to an USB stick or other medium and install Firefox from that drive.
You can find all Firefox versions here: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html

  • Is there any way to browse a USB disk while booted from OSX install disk?

My hard drive died on me the other day (the mac partition anyway) and I'm trying to use a data recovery program to get my data back. I have the application on my USB key, and I assumed I'd then be able to use the OS X installer disk to boot up and then run this program from the USB drive but the installer doesn't let me browse folders or quit... Is there any way to do this? I don't have another mac to firewire or anything so it's either this or order a recovery program on a bootable disk, which I really don't want to do as I need this done fast... Any suggestions?

Your utility for data recovery usually should have come with a Mac bootable DVD with its own application on it. If it didn't, contact them for a disc that will boot your Mac with the utility on it. Your other option is to get a Firewire hard drive, partition it, and install the operating system there on one partition large enough for the operating system, while leaving the other partition large enough to recover the entire unbootable hard drive.
Partitioning is described here, and will WIPE your entire hard drive:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • Is there any way to change a "removable disk" to a "local disk"?

I'm running XP proffesional via bootcamp and I've already run out of hard drive space. I've partitioned my 40gb ipod into two 20gb ones, one of which is windows and the other is mac.

Is ther any way to change the ipod to a "local drive"?

There is probably a registry edit you can do (at your own risk).
This link may give you some ideas

You may need to do the edit, install the programmes and then roll back the edit so you can remove the iPod and then see if the programmes will still run.

  • Is there any way to verify or repair an MP3 File?

I've got a Rio Cali MP3 Player. I occasionally have problems with MP3's -- they won't play. I may upload 140 tracks to the Rio's memory card, and out of the 140, 3 or 4 tracks won't play. They play fine in iTunes and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them, however they won't play on the Rio, even if I reload them.
This makes me suspect that there is something wrong with the MP3 file, however I can't figure out what's wrong or how to verify the file.
Is there some way I can check and repair a damaged MP3 file -- perhaps a mac or unix utility?

MP3Trimmer will give you a report of what problems it
encountered. You will have to scroll through a long
list of the frames though. Unfortunately as you have
pointed out it does not batch process files,
something i have long asked him to implement, amongst
    other things.
The report may identify that there were problems
which at least tells you were you stand.
Thanks. I'll take a closer look at MP3Trimmer and see if I can figure out exactly what's happening with the error files.
Definitely try changing your format for those
particular problem files and see if that fixes
    things.
The other thing is to examine your original CD for
defects if the problems reappear at the same point. I
have found that CD drives with diferent lasers can
give different results. When my slower dual layer
DVD/CD drive in my iMac G5 fails me I will often
successfully use my high speed external CD burner.
Also give the CD a careful wipe with an optical
(glasses) cloth it may just be a smudge or grime on
    the surface.
I have had problems with CDs. I typically copy all the AIFF's to my HD first, and have had some files not copy. I usually try cleaning the disk or use a different CD reader for those files. I usually manage to get all the AIFFs onto my HD, where I run an Applescript that renames the files. I then import them into iTunes where i rip them and add ID3 tags. They rip and play fine i iTunes.
I noted your settings. I do a heck of a lot of what
you are talking about and have a How to make
Audiobooks "manual" floating around the net.
I'll do some trolling and see if I can find it.
I suggest you forget the VBR, it makes little
difference to a 32kbs MP3 ripped from a good quality
source but as I have noted seems less reliable.
Sounds like a good suggestion. I haven't done any size comparisons with and without VBR, but I suspect it's pretty negligible.
Also I suggest you join the tracks into one file per CD,
usually 30-60mins long and much less cumbersome than
    hundreds of meaninglessly divided tracks.
That alone may ride over your problem.
That might get pretty labor-intensive especially for a 10 or 15 disk set. Plus, the Rio chokes on big files -- I think it's more than the ram can handle. I've downloaded a few books from iTunes and have had to cut them up into smaller segments. I've also found it easier to bookmark smaller files than to try to scroll thru a 30 min track to find the spot where you left off.

  • Is there any way to speed up the chipscope?

    Hello
I have made a design to test an ADC. The timing report shows that it can runs at 200MHz. But after I added a chipscope part, the frequency became much lower.
Reduce the width and deepth of the chipscope would make it run faster, but I still want to know if there is any way else to make it faster.
    Thanks for your help

  • Are there any ways to speed up Aperture without buying new hardware?

I have seen on many forums people complaining about the speed of Aperture. I have an iMac 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM and Aperture is slow.
Navigating the images is not too bad really. They show quick enough for me, but my major gripe is with the speed of adjustments (in RAW). Functions such as Straightening and Sharpening are so slow that it makes it difficult to choose the level you desire.
For example, straightening is a fine art and because of the slowness the image jumps rather than rotating smoothly. This is extremely annoying!
Bar spending money money on a higher spec has anyone got any tips on speeding things up a little? Would reducing the quality of the previews help?

  • Is there ANY way to have a static widget over the top of a question slide?

I have a popup reference widget that I made and put it in a master slide and set it to ply on top, BUT if I add it to a question slide, the text from the question shows over it.
Any way to have a widget always be on the absolute top?
Click on the MSDS tab at bottom reveals popup, but the question text appears over the widget even though it is in a master slide set to shop on top.
    Ideas?

Once your widget is on the slide, it has complete control over the display tree. So what you can do is to move up the parent hierarchy until you find the slide (parent.parent.parent) and then re-parent yourselft or you popup window on top of the hierarchy by just calling addChild(). That works well for the static widgets. You just need to deal with the position being different on the slide so you'll have to juggle with localToGlobal() and globalToLocal().
