Is there anything i can do, my iMac 20" (2006) wont start after i moved it while working?

I bought a new iMac, in the rush to fire it up i moved my old one from my tiny desk without turning it down.
One day later after turning it of i try to turn it on, but nothing happened. Only then i remember what i did.
Is there anything i can do, i did not back up almost the 1 TB of data in it.
Please Help, thx in advance.

I had a 20" iMac and it died two years ago. The internal cooling fan died first, which caused something plastic to melt inside. I think I moved it once to dust after that and it would rarely start up, so I left it turned on all the time. I could put it to sleep, but if I shut it down it was very hard to jump start. I found that if I kept pushing the power button it would eventually start.
When it officially died... I wound up taking it into a local computer repair shop and they were able to remove the hard drive and mount it in an external casing. I connected it to my new computer and was able to save all of my work to the new computer.
I know it ***** dealing with this, but if you can't get it started don't worry. The odds are your data is still fine, you just need to have it mounted externally.

It's an Intel iMac the last G5s were built in 2005.
How to identify iMac models
1. Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Startup Disk and check to besure the that OS X 10.6 on the Macintosh HD is set as the Startup Disk.
2. Start up from you Snow Leopard Upgrade DVD, navagate to Utilities > Disk Utility and Repair the Macintosh HD.

Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is

Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
2. wait for terminal show
3. release keys
4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
5. press enter
6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
7. press enter
8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.

Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
   1. Reboot
   2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
   3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
          * mount -uw /
          * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
          * shutdown -h now
   4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

I'll guess that you're upgrading from Snow Leopard? You should be able to start using your original install dvd by inserting the disc and restarting while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility from your install disc and try to repair the drive. Then try the upgrade again.

If you're trying to sign in to FaceTime, try to sign in to iMessage in the Messages application, or vice versa.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

The top part of my screen is dim, is there anything I can do myself to fix it?

I have a 20 inch early 2008 iMac that has been perfect for me, up until now. 95% of the time when I now start it up, the top part of my screen goes dim. I play with it and put it to sleep and wake it up immediately, and sometimes that will work and it will stay lit up. The computer is clearly out of warranty...is there anything I can do to help this? How much would a repair like this cost without a warranty? I'm so frustrated.

iMac's are about the worst computer in the world value speaking to buy becaues of their "closed" nature.
Your only choice seems to be to call a online Mac repair shop or Apple, send it to them and get a estimate.
Consider a MacPro for your next desktop machine, at least with that you can run out and get another monitor, or hard drive, or video card, or power supply, or ...and install it yourself.

But yes it can be done as long as you use a different IP subnet to what is being used for the internet..
So I need to know what modem router you have?? Does it have wireless as that would make it very easy?
