Is there anyway to retain layers in Photoshop Elements while saving to a .jpg format?

I'm new to using PSE, and I like their concept of layers so that the original photo is not altered, however, my preference is to save all of my files utilizing .jpg.  I actually found out yesterday that after 3 weeks of scanning in very old family photos, then using PSE11 and utilizing layers and then saving to .jpg, that now when I reopen these files in PSE that the layers created are gone.  Please help!

Hi, although I'm really disappointed to hear that JPEG file format does not allow one to preserve the layer structure, I like your suggestion to keep the original psd files on a separate external drive.  I'm undertaking a massive job to scan in and then photoshop several generations of photos (estimated at over 8,000 photos), and as mentioned before I'd like to have all finished files saved as jpegs, but doing minimum compression as I know that it's a lossy format.  I guess I'll need to think what's the likelihood of wanting to access the original photos again in psd so that the background layer is preserved.  One last question if I may, you mentioned that converting over to jpeg is easy enough to do.  Is it simply a matter of selecting each PSD file and saving as a .jpg or is there a faster and or bulk method to convert multiple files to jpeg?  Thanks for all your help in fielding these questions?
If you google "batch conversion PSD to JPEG" you will get many hits for converters.
Your proposed work-flow is not clear to me. Are you planning to scan these photos and process all of them in PSE, then save them in PSD with the layers intact? Or, are you planning  to scan them and simply save the scans without initial PSE processing?
I bring this up as I did a project last year, scanning/digitizing old 2x2" Kodacolor slides in the cardboard mounts. Initially I just scanned them and saved them to disk as JPEG. On further review, some were not interesting, others had folks in them whose identity remains cryptic, etc. The bottom line is that I was selective in processing them in PSE.
I wouldn't worry about JPEG compression as a deterrent unless you Open>modify>save, Open>modify>save repeatedly.

I am using Photoshop Elements 11.  Do all .jpg formatted file have to be retangular in shape?  I want to create an oval .jpg picture to insert into a book.  Haven't been able to do so.  It would work if I could make the area outside the oval completely transparent.  Can anyone help me here?

JPG does not support transparency, so even if you create an oval with transparent background, the saved JPG will have white background. Instead, save it as a PNG, TIFF, or GIF which preserve the transparency.
Here is one of many ways to create your oval:
Create a new file the approximate size of the oval. Add the oval with the Custom Shape Ellipse tool, and simplify the shape layer.
In the Layers Palette, Ctrl-click the oval to select it and copy the selection to the clipboard (Edit > Copy).
Then do File > New from Clipboard. This creates the oval with transparent background cropped to the oval size.
Then save it as one of the file types that support transparency (and also supported by the application where you are sending the picture to).
Note:  Is is not even necessary to do step 2. That is only if some reason you want the oval to be tightly cropped. It is sufficient to delete the Background layer in step 1 (or turn off its visibility) and save the file. The oval will appear correctly in the book with either version.

  • Merging layers in Photoshop Elements 8

I'm having trouble merging layers in photoshop elements 8. I have a .psd file that I have used in the past to add a background color, shape template, and restrict the size of images I have posted to my website. In the past I have used photoshop elements 6, and to accomplish what I'm trying to do I selected open-apple - G. This worked in the past, but is not bringing the layers together as expected. I went online and found that I could accomplish this by holding down option and clicking on the line that seperated the two layers, and this worked for me once and I have been unable to repeat it since. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to apply a style to these web photos, and it's simply not working for me. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

Looking at your image, you do know you have a layer set/group,which is like a folder in the layer structure? You can't apply a layer style to a folder, which is what you're trying to do in your screenshot.
This gets very confusing because of adobe's switching the names for these things around:
    1. You have what used to be called a layer set and is now called a layer group, which is a folder in the layer structure. PSE doesn't natively do these: is this your image with the group created via an add-on, or did someone send it to you this way?
    2. What used to be called layer groups are now called clipping masks. That's when you want to do something like crop the visible part of a layer to the shape of the layer beneath it.
It's not really clear where you want the layer style, why you have a layer group, and which layer you want the style on. If you can explain more, it would help.

  • Is there a 64 bit version of Photoshop Elements 11?w.

Is there a 64 bit version of Photoshop Elements 11?

But PSE11 runs well on 64 bit systems. In fact many apps are 32bit. If you do any video work have a look at the combo Photshop Elements + Premiere Elements which is very good value. Premiere Elements does have 64 bit support.

  • Working on layers with Photoshop Elements 10

Does Photoshop Elements 10 allow you to edit layers on something created in Photoshop? I have a map that is comprised of 4 layers that I'd like to edit.

Layer groups - Can't change handle individual layers in a layer group (for example, when working on file created in full Photoshop). Ungroup layers for this.
    Supports only adjustment layer masks.
There are other differences from PS which I found nicely mentioned at http://simplephotoshop.com/photoshop_elements/photoshopelements_vs_photoshop.htm.
    Hope it helps.
    Thanks,

What is the best way to work on photographs, editing them, and preparing for print if I can't save layers as .jpg or non-layered .tiffs? The photo lab I will be using does not allow layered .tiff. I have seen many videos that show how to let's say enhance eyes using layers, but in this video it says that .jpg cannot be used. I am new to photography and PSE an would like to know if there is an alternative way to edit an image that can be saved as .jpg. Thank you!

  • Can I  Auto Blend layers in Photoshop Elements?

I have seen face-swapping tutorials online using the "auto-blend layers" tool In Photoshop CS6. Is there a way to do the same thing in elements?

    Hi Broad Arrow builders,
    99jon is right.
However, that is assuming you already know the dimensions (99jon rightly describes setting the dimensions in advance) of the logo in advance, and you're going to use the logo you need for one specific use only. A logo you make in Photoshop Elements may not always remain clear and legible when you scale it up or down. I say that because logos will, generally, find their way into lots of places - letterheads, banners, T-shirt emblems, and other places. You might need different sizes for different needs.
You might want to use a vector graphics tool like Illustrator for logo design.
Phew! Okay - temporary fix - PSE 11 will work great! Permanent fix - for multiple designs and dimensions - you might need a different tool.
    Cheers,
    David

Yes. You can download the Firefox installer and copy the file to an USB stick or other medium and install Firefox from that drive.
You can find all Firefox versions here: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html
