Is there anyway to STOP Skype from updating?

I"m the first to admit that I'm probably the most illiterate computer and technological adult using a newer mini laptop.  I'm confused with the new Skype. On my other computer I could use Skype with basically no problems and with no fee at all.  I only used Skype 2-3 times a month to see my long-distant boyfriend, and to Skype one of my friends a few times a month, and I don't need it for anything other than that.  Now after trying to get onto Skype on my new computer, it looks as though the only way I can use Skype is to open an account in which I have to pay for.  If there's a way I can use the "old Skype" and not pay for it, how do I do that? I'm not seeing that option.

Yet again Skype and Microsoft missing the point on this one.
If I set my Skype to NOT UPDATE then that is the ONLY setting a user shoud have to change.
To then force an update through Microsoft update is not only unwanted, it is in fact illegal.  The fact there is an option in Skype to disable updates means that the customer has made a decision that they do not want the product updating.  If Microsoft then force the update that would be contrary to the users express wishes (defined by disabling skype updates in skype) and therefor the activity of Skype subsequesntly being updated via an alternative route against the wishes of the user is against the law.  From a legal standpoint it means that the computer is being altered against the wishes of the user, therefor the activity comes under the same law as a computer virus.
This is the law in USA and in UK, and I suspect in many countries.
Whilst Skype and Microsoft are completely within their rights to advise users to update, forcing an update against the wishes of the device user is against the law.
For example, in the UK under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, making changes to a persons computer files without permission can result in a 6 month prison sentence.  The USA has very similar laws.
Before Skype people mention terms and conditions, the LAW is above Terms and conditions.
If a user has expressly selected to NOT update skype, then any efforts by Microsoft to perform an update is against the wishes of the user and is therefor in the eyes of the law an illegal activity.
If enough people get together a class action could be instigated against MS for this activity.
Or Microsoft could do something really simple (and unheard of for the last 4 or 5 years) and listen to its customers.

Someone has already been using the facetime because it was busy when I tried to call it. Is there anyway of tracking it down?

If you did not have a passcode set up and configured to delete the information on teh iPad when access failed, then no. Even if you have Find My iPad turned on, it is likley this new "owner" has disabled it.
You need to change each and every password for any account you have that the iPad can access - immediately.

  • When relocating my itunes, I lost all my metadata for albums that I had originally imported from either CD or bandcamp. Is there anyway to stop this from happening?

I wanted to access my itunes music from an external HDD as my mac mini only has a 256GB SSD. That was fine, I did that correctly as the forums suggested, however looking through my library It appeared that I was missing a fair amount of music! Right down the bottom of my library was a whole bunch of songs with '01 *trackname* ' then a whole bunch of '02 *trackname* ' so on and so forth. This was all my missing music! I realised after a short moment that this was indeed all the music that I had imported either directly from CD or music I had bought from Bandcamp (so originally it had all the album/artist/artwork/year etc etc) Now I've had to go through and look up each album and re-sort them myself. I want to know how to make sure that if I do need to ever re-import my itunes (HDD failure etc) that all that metadata will stay the same.
    Thanks!

AIFF and ALAC will both preserve tags in the files itself as well as what is stored in the library file.  It is still best you do the move the library properly as there are some metadata only stored in the iTunes library file and this data will be lost if you end up re-adding a file, but at least most will be saved.
ALAC is the same quality as AIFF but smaller files (~60% original).
Various things you mention set up small red flags.  If you are sharing a library you have to be careful.  A library is all the media plus all the support files which give it the structure you see when you open the iTunes application.  Only one person at a time can open the library file itself (iTunes library.itl).  Several people can simultaneously share media but if you want several computers using the same media at the same time you will have to set it up so
each user has their own library file and share the same media.  The main problem there is if one person makes changes to the media the other person has to be notified because iTunes iwll not automatically update a library file if something changes in the media folder.  I could type another 30 lines on this topic and won't unless you specifically need to configure things a particular way.
Another red flag is "network".  Is this a NAS?  Plenty of posts on the forum where iTunes has problems using those. Probably many people with no issues but it seems to be a constant issue with some.

  • Is there anyway to stop iCloud from sharing apps and contacts between devices?  I have 3 iPhones, ipad2 and a Macbook and now all of the contacts from all 3 phones come up on everyones phones and the iPad.  We have one iTunes acct.

I was told I would have to set up 3 separate iTunes accounts, but is that the only way?  It has been very frustrating b/c I don't need my husbands or daughters contacts on my phone.  And anytime one downloads an app, it pops up on the other devices.  I like the intent the cloud, but it is getting frustrating to manage all of my devices individually.
    thanks!!

Without separate accounts and IDs, how would you imagine or manage different people?
I assume that they all have their own separate login accounts for Mac OS. They should. But that isn't enough if all the household iTunes are under one ID, they would get mixed into one ID in the database.
Was it though through far enough? probably not. Getting the cloud concept working seems as far as it went with more work to be done to handle devices, IDs, and accounts, and to avoid just this mess and mishmash.

This issue can be caused by the presence of leftover files in the Firefox program folder (defaults\pref) like a file firefox.js that overrides the update URL with a wrong link.
Do a clean reinstall and be sure to remove the Firefox program folder.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Stop Skype from Automatically Loading?

    Dear Skype Community,
Does anyone know how to stop Skype from automatically loading on the computer?  I know there's a check box for not signing you in when Skype starts, but I also want the Skype program not to be automatically open and the icon not be pinned to the taskbar when I start the computer.  There does not seem to be any option in the Skype menu to stop this from happening.  I know this never happened in previous Skype versions, but now it seems impossible to avoid.
    Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the advice, Ruwim, but my version of Skype (6.21.0.104) does not allow you to do that.  If you click on Tools, there is no Options option.  There is Connection Options, but in there, there is no General Tab, nor is there an option to not start it when Windows starts.  Hopefully you'll be able to figure out a different method.
Tools -> Options , etc. will be available to you after you successfully login to Skype. These menus are not available on the login screen.

Unfortunately, as you noted, not all apps are listed by backwards compatibly, and lack of it is often a bug later fixed.
The really odd thing here is that the latest version of 1 Password (3.1.1) was released 4/20/10, well before iOS4.... It most definitely IS compatible with 3.1.3 and in fact ISN'T 4.x tested. This can be re-downloaded
1 Password Pro (3.5), is a new app which was just released for 4.0, and won't install in 3.x phones. It is a new app, not an update of 1 Password, and downloading it doesn't replace the original 1 Password either in iTunes or the phone
I suggest Hecubus79 delete 1 Password Pro and re-download 1 Password 3.1.1, if it's really gone, and contact the developer for a refund for the Pro version.

  • Stop Skype from starting automatically on Windows 7

Hello, I have seen some information regarding how to stop Skype from starting automatically on Macs, but for Windows 7, I have yet to see any information. If someone could provide me an answer as to how to stop Skype from opening as soon as I start my computer, that would be great. Thanks.

  • I Need to Stop Ipod from updating!!! Please HELP!!!

    Hi everyone,
My computer crashed only a few days ago and doesn't look like it can be fixed, so that means that my whole Ipod libery will be wiped! (I have about 10GB worth of music and vids on it!) and I have only a quarter of the stuff backed up (my own fault, I know!) and I recently thought all my stuff would be gone forever untill I discovered the IpodRip Software.
I've never heard of it before, but I'm willing to try anything to get my libery back. The only problem is, my Iopd was set to Update Automaticly as soon as it's pluggged into my computer. The only way the IpodRip software will work is if everything remains in the ipod and as well all know, if I plug it into my comp and there is nothing in my libery, the ipod will be wiped!!
Does anyone know how to stop it from Updating Automaticly when I plug it in??!
I would really appricate anyones help on this, thank you so much!!

Connect your iPod and when you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows

I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed Internet?

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers
    Nick

  • How do I stop iPhoto from updating

How do I stop iPhoto from updating itself every time I put a backed up iPhoto disc in to play? Now I quit or force quit iPhoto to stop it happening. Happens every time I install a CD or DVD disc. It cant possibly be necessary every time.

Chances are, that disc was created by an earlier version of iPhoto. iPhoto is trying to convert the library on the disc into an iPhoto 6 library, because the file structure is different in v6. The only fix I know is to copy the disc to your Mac, let iPhoto update your disc as an individual library, then burn a new disc that iPhoto 6 will like.

My daughter made a $49.99 in-app purchase of 1400 gems for Home Design Story.  She says she does not know how she purchased it.  Is there anyway to remove that from my purchases?

Apple allows apps to list themselves as "Free" if the initial download is free, even if the app has kid-oriented inducements for costly in-app purchases.  The in-app purchases are almost always ridiculous, over-priced game accessories, of which your example of "1400 gems for $49.99" is right up there.  It is way too caveat emptor for my taste, but each consumer can form their own opinion on that.
To Apple's credit, they have a good record of granting refunds providing you explain the extenuating circumstances (purchase by a minor) and only ask once.  Contact iTunes Customer Service.
As roaminggnome notes, you need to place restrictions on the devices.  The restrictions are off by default, so you need to take action to do this.  See this document:  iOS: Understanding Restrictions

    Many thanks Jaz Eilles

Sounds like you have a folder with an album named fred inside of it.  Folders can only hold other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. but not just photos.  So you must be sure to drop the photo directly onto the album titled fred that resides inside that folder otherwise it will create a new album.
So expand the folder so the fred album is visible and drop the new photo onto the album.

  • How do I stop itunes from updating?

Itunes tries to auto update & I usually can stop it, but sooner or later it usually will manage to anyway. Today when I opened Itunes an update had taken place, and a few hundred songs & all my playlists were no longer there. The songs are still in my itunes folder, but now I have to go through the selection process again. I've got an old B/W 20 gig ipod and have to take songs out to put new songs in. I'd buy a new 160 G, but problems like this really turn me off.
How do I completely stop all updates? They're usually a step in the wrong direction anyway.

    So heres the latest:
During the week my computer again magically updated itself to itunes 11. I have no idea how. I open itunes and it starts the "new itunes" stuff. I see no update dialogue whatsoever. Its about 2 weeks since i rolled back to 10.7
I generally work with remote rural communities - i can get internet through my cell phone but only enough bandwidth to send/receive emails. Its virtually impossible to load web pages which leaves me wondering how itunes 11 manages to get itself onto my computer in the first place.
I can only suppose when i am in the city every week or 2 it has downloaded itself and then decides to install itself at an opportune time.
Im happy to buy music through itunes but the program itself is such a resource hog that i cant use it while running CAD programs or other work software. Added to that i cant stop it from doing whatever it likes to my computer - its starting to look more like malware than a useful program to me.
Anyone have this strange problem? The options i can see are: dump itunes for winamp or other; reinstall windows which im not inclined to do.
    Ideas?
    Regards,
    Craig
