Is there life after death? It won't boot!

Hi guys and gals,  A tech said my lap-top is dead.  But could it be resuscitated?
It is an M65 S9092 four years old and looking new.  It worked fine one night but would not start the next day.  Pressing the power button has it try to start-up for only about six seconds.
Things that have been tried include sequentially removing the memory cards, battery, and hard drive.  What else could be checked?  When should the non-resuscitate order be applied?
Thanks for reading this.
Trev

Have you tried to boot holding the 0 (zero) key down ?  This should get you to Recovery.
Have you tried Safe mode ?
Have you tried BIOS entry ?
Have you tried booting from a Recovery CD or DVD ?
If all these fail,  RIP ! Unless you have a suitable screwdriver !

  • Is there life after bk 13- absolutely....happy story

After 5 long years, we were dischardged on Thursday. Applied for a Prosper loan ($2500) on Sunday. It was approved and should be deposited in my account in 2 days. Int rate was 9.4%, but being credit score obsessed, know that it is a good tradeline. Well, that got the ball rolling and just for kicks wnet car shopping. Today, we bought a 2015 Honda Oddysey for $28,000 at an unbelievable rate of 3.9%. I am completely over the moon.  Now we wait out the 2 years until it falls off our reports. My eq score was 711 at dealer. I know it will take an initial drop, but am well onto 750 scores! It was a tough 5 years, didn't think my current car would even last through it, but it paid off. For those of you who need encouragement, this is it. Life is great and I learned so much about becoming financially aware.  My plan is to put $ from loan in the bank at pay it off at 18 months. There will be some awesome tradelines on my credit report in a short time.

An installment personal loan and an installment car loan won't help your credit as much as you think. I've taken on 2 new car loans in the last 2+ years since discharge... while paying off the old loan.  I saw 0 FICO score change with the addition/payoff of the loans to my credit reports... due to the fact I already have installment Sallie Mae student loans. You only need 1 installment loan to help your credit mix and give you a point boost... after that installment loans have virtually no affect on  your score... unless you default. The #1 way to improve your credit score is revolving credit cards. Grats on the discharge.  Looks like you are well on your way... just don't expect 750 scores until AFTER the 7 years from filing is up and the derogs fall off your reports.  It's not going to happen.  The public record and IIB accounts will keep you in the upper 600's/low 700's for as long as they on are your reports. Not trying to rain on your parade... just giving you the facts based on someone who has been there.  I'm 6+ years since my Ch 13 with a few more months till everything falls off.  I've done just about as perfect a rebuild as you can do and I'm in the 670's-680's... because I still have the public record and IIB accounts weighing down my scores.

  • Is there life after applecare ?

background: I have a G5 power mac with a 23" apple cinema display - my 3 year applecare
    contract expired last november
questions: 1) I have never had a problem with either my mac or my display but what is the
best approach if and when I do have one ?
    2) is there any precaution to take before I do have a problem (e.g., a different
    service contract) ?

    Hi Joseph Compton-
It would then depend on how heavily you depend upon your Mac for your day to day workflow.
A couple of backups would be prudent, as would access to another machine just in case something fails.
At the point of failure if you find yourself unable to quickly remedy the problem take it to an Apple Service Provider for a diagnosis and estimate of repair cost. From that point make your decision about your next machine and or move based on that cost.
    Luck-

  • Need advice on repairs after wine spill - won't boot

Trying to help a friend fix her MacBook Pro 17" mid-2009 laptop.  A fairly small amount of wine was spilled on the keyboard and it was turned off, however not knowing what else to do they used canned air to dry it out.  They did not turn it upside down so wine could have been blown deeper into the laptop.  She took it to a repair shop and they apparently cleaned it but said the upper assembly containing the keyboard needed to be replaced.  It powered up once after this incident but never got passed the start scene with the Apple logo.  Since then it won't power up.  My question it this... is the power button integrated with the keyboard assembly and possibly damaged?  Would buying a used keyboard assembly fix the problem or could there be more unseen damage.  Any ideas will be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi everyone,
I've been using forums like this one looking for advice on what to do, expect and what not to do when faced with a spillage on your mac and I appreciate everyone's stories and advice from their experience so, I'll gladly reciprocate.
So, I spilled soda pop on my macbook air recently. It was about 2/3 of a shot glass full of diet root beer in the upper right hand corner. I was completely devastated. I thought: "not only would this be a unnecessary and expensive waste of money, but all of my intake files were on that Mac and I'll lose literally thousands of dollars in potential sales if my data is corrupted too!"
Under pressure, I succumb to the two newbie mistakes that almost every newbie makes. First, I froze.  Completely. "Maybe is the liquid didn't make it's way into the system? - it really wasn't that much.." I then waited to see what would happen (stupid). The Mac shut off. In a panic, i switched it back on (STUPID) and a blank white screen appeared with a text in the middle. the first paragraph was in english and read "There was a problem attempting to turn your device on … etc, etc". There was a paragraph beneath it written in Chinese or Korean characters. Then, mac shut off again. I frantically ran down stairs to get a bag of rice. I return to our room and, in a panic, i wanted to try turing on the macbook one more time before dumping it in rice (very STUPID). My Mac was working and I was thrilled (for about 5 minutes). All of a sudden, my keys strokes stopped registering, everything froze and it shut down. I did not turn it back on after that. I closed it and quickly flipped it over to let it dry and attempt to save it's life. About 30 seconds later, a motor like noise emanated from the Mac. It started quiet and then quickly got louder and louder. It got so loud that it sounded like the fan was screaming (i've never heard it that loud before). Then, it quickly simmered right down. I THEN submersed it into a rice coffin.
I was so upset, I had so many potential customer intakes on that device and, due to the volume i get on a daily basis, didn't back it up. I made sure rice got in every visible crevice without actually opening up the device. 3 hours later, I put my ear up to the back of the mac. I could hear a faint motor hum still active in the device (like the normal sign it makes when it's on). I though "ok, ok… that's a good sign right?!". It's about that time where I started surfing forums likes these to have a better idea of how to handle this, what to expect and shared/common signs from others experiences that indicate damage has been done.
I kept it closed, tipped over and submersed in it's rice coffin for 37 hours until I took it to the Apply store. All great new and I had the best possible scenario happen to me
The tech said there were no signs of any liquid damage in the system (not even the spill detectors picked it up) and that it's running perfectly fine.
    So, to recap:
    1. I spilled 2/3 of a shot glass full of diet root beer in the upper right hand corner of my Macbook Air (where the power button is.
    2. The computer shut itself down.
3.I tried to turn it back on twice. Once right after and I got blank screen with text saying it's experiencing difficulties trying to start - then it shut itself off. A second time, I attempted to turn it back on 10 minutes later and it ran smoothly for 5 minutes then, keys stopped registering, the computer froze and shut itself off again.
    4. Mac let out a very loud scream and then the sound died down (but still lightly hummed for hours later).
    5. I closed it and turned it upside down (with the shell closed).
    5. I submersed it in a bag of rice (I made sure it got into every possible visible crevice).
    6. I left it in it's rice coffin for 37 hours.
    7. Took it to the Apple store - and turns out it was perfectly fine and there were no fees!
I'm also really impressed with Apple. It would have been so easy and profitable for them to take advantage of the situation and at least charge and assessment fee - but they didn't. It was completely free. They even replaced one of my screws before sending me off. Apple is honest and respectful with their customers! it if it's broke - they really don't "fix" it like a lot of these other mainstream stores who sell computer repair services. Apple, you rule in so many ways. You know what you're doing as a business and are owning the market for it. Great service and great products Apple.
So that is my spillage story, hope you all find it as usefully as I found your stories (these forums gave me the idea to use rice and it worked!).
Wish you all good luck with your macbook spillage issues. Don't be so quick to write it off as a loss just yet

  • Computer will not start after update. Won't boot. Security Update. Grey.

This is a fix that worked for me. 2 times in the past Automatic Software update has corrupted my hard drive.
When installing using SOFTWARE UPDATE the installer for the security update fails, says it has been moved to trash and to try again. Well if you restart, you get a system hang and much sadness.
I tried the usual stuff, booting from CD(osx) and selecting the disk utility from the top menu. But that didn't fix it. Then I ran DiskWarrior, which usually fixes anything, but it didn't this time.
Here is what did work. I checked my other mac to see what the last security update was, and it had the 2009-001 update (worked on that mac). So I knew now that the one that screwed up was that update.
I downloaded that update to my laptop.
I started my iMac (the one that crashed after update) in "target disk mode" - this treats the whole computer as an external firewire disk drive (it's totally safe as long as you don't erase anything) - you start into target mode by holding down "T" key while turning on, leave it pressed until you see a symbol on the screen that looks like a "Y".
I hooked up a firewire cable from the iMac to my laptop and waited until the iMacs Hard drive appeared on the laptop desktop.
Now you can browse the corrupt drive just like a regular external drive.
If you have an external drive with room, this is a good time to back up the entire corrupt drive to a folder on the other external just in case...
But what I have found is that when the installer for the security update failed, it corrupted the file that mac osx needs to read during boot, so it is an isolated failure, but it is always better to be safe.
at this point you are ready to attempt the repair..
On my laptop I ran the installer for the security update I had manually downloaded from apples site. When asked for destination for the install I select the HD for the iMac (or whatever unit has the no boot situation that got corrupted). (note that if you have not renamed your main hard drives, you will have a choice of 2 with the same name). Usually the drive on the computer you are using will be first in line. Rename the drive on the computer you are using before running the install if you want to be sure there are no mistakes..)
Select the disk you want to (re)install to, and let it go. It is a long update, so be patient and let it finish. It should say preparing install, installing, finishing, and optimizing system performance...
When it says that the installation completed successfully you can eject the corrupt hard drive by dragging to the trash to dismount it. Then unplug the firewire cable.
Shut down the repaired (hopefully) machine by holding the power button until it turns of.
    Count to ten.
Prepare a celebratory or misery soothing beverage (but keep it in the other room).
Some people like to start in safe mode by holding down shift key while turning on, but I couldn't get it to work on mine...
Turn the computer back on and wait. The boot process will take longer than usual the first time.
If and when you get to login or desktop, go in and run apple disk utility and repair the disk, and repair the permissions.
If it worked, breathe a sigh, do a happy dance. And from now on when mac os says there are updates available, write them down, then go to apples site, download them manually, and install them manually, one at a time from now on, to avoid hassles.
    Hope this helps!
    Enjoy!

Thanks for the post/tips newfocus, hope it helps somebody!

  • After install firefox won't boot up i hit icon and nothing firfox 4.0

i had firefox 3.62 went and upgraded to 4.0 after install when i click on icon it does nothing will not bring up

Windows 7 DVD has a decent memtest and you are in Safe Mode probably due to Windows didn't shutdown gracefully.
You can also use chkdsk or WD Lifeguard to certify all the disk sectors are mapped out if they need be.
8800GT: you have heard of the 10 minutes in over for 350*?
But you might want a new card anyway.
Vendors and RAM. Well it was working but buying RAM esp FBDIMMs and my guess is you have some 4GB DIMMs. Also mixing sets or brands can work most of the time, but not always.
RAM probllems result in dirty files and other errrors so fix the problem, make sure you have a good pair and no errors. Or more. And then try clean install.
Windows 7 w/ AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys does not like an Apple array to be present. MacDrive gets around that and allows mounting - and avoiding BSODs.
Cheap as I have found, highest quality though, 667MHz so they run 4% slower is all, if you need one good set:
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
Lion Recovery Disk Repair? you did or didn't?
Lion installer: hopefully you kept the ESD package for later re-install (without having to download and all that bother).
Some people play musical chairs with the Risers and DIMMs and DIMM slots. Or just RMA and get new sets but I would try with just half the 24GB or less, then test with half the 16GB set. To have one set it would be one DIMM in A1 and B1.
And of course reset the SMC - hitting power button 10 seconds while unplugged (and no devices or cables connected).

  • [SOLVED] After update Arch won't boot (possibly because of udev)

After running a update to arch it gives me the following errors on boot:
/lib/udev/udevd: error while loading shared libraries: libkmod.so.2: cannot open shared object file: no object file or directory
then it gives several more errors about libkmod.so.2 and finally drops to a recovery shell. I am using an older version of kmod (version 4.2 I think) because i got a different boot error when I had the latest version installed. Any advice?

Upgrade the rest of your system. udev is expecting kmod>=5.
Please make sure to regenerate your initramfs images, too.
Thanks, after regenerating the initramfs images it works.

  • After upgrade it won't boot

I have a MBP Mid 2010 13 inch that we had at work that would not boot.  I ended up erasing the disk and went out and bought Snow Leopard to install on it.  Snow Leopard installed and booted fine but anytime I try to do the updates the system will not boot.  I can the go back in reinstall from the DVD and it boots fine but of course without the updates.  I have run the Apple hardware test and that did not find any errors.
If I have it go into verbose mode during boot the last thing that gets displayed is AirPort:  Link Down on en1.  Reason 1 (Unspecified)
The retail version of Snow Leopard that I bought was 10.6.3 and I tried to update to 10.6.8 and had the issue.  Then I reloaded and tried again but just to 10.6.4 and had the same issue.
I have probably reloaded it 4 times now and changed the hard disk out for that last reload/update and it did the same thing.
I had hoped to put Lion on this but need to get it to 10.6.8 first.  This thing is crazy frustrating.....    Anyone got any ideas?
    TIA

Sound like you have the old Snow Leopard "dropped Wfi" issue.
Seem the recourse is to flush your router and reset it.
Direct connect via ethernet cable to the modem
1: grab firmware updates for router (if not Apple) else Software Update and Airport Update.
2: WPA2 (AES)  Personal 20 random character password, one each for Admin and Guest Internet access
3: leave MAC filtering and invisible alone, doesn't work against hackers, just causes connection issues.

I installed Arch and attempted to upgrade the kernel. I had to remove these pkgs because the depended on previous kernel:

    After kernel upgrade, won't boot:

ERROR: unable to create/detect root device '.......'
    Dropping to recovery shell...
This is the final error messages after making the following attempts to correct the problem:
    Added rootfstype=ext3 to kernel line.
    Added rootdelay=8 (then 20) t6o kernel line.
Replaced UUID moniker with /dev/sda1 (SATA drive).

  • Network.service won't boot

    Hi there,
I just installed arch on my Thinkpad t42p which has a ipw2100 wireless chip. I configured the whole network manually and a corresponding systemd entry. Sometimes the network comes up at boot at sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't boot I still can start it manually with
    # systemctl start network
Why could it be that it sometimes boots and sometimes it doesn't?
    Last edited by dead_kenny (2012-11-10 08:35:03)

Thx for the link skunktrader. Now I fixed the matter by asining a udev rule to the network interfaces as described in the wiki.
Now I installed arch on an ASUS notebook where the interfaces don't shift during boot but there the network.service also won't boot. I have to start the service manually after boot. The output of
    systemctl /usr/lib/systemd/systemd
doesn't present the Network Connectivity until I start it manually. Could there be another reason for this? E.g. driver starts to late? How should I look for why systemd cannot start boot the network.service?

  • Arch won't boot on Virtual Box afted updating

I instaled Arch as guest on Vbox, after updating, it won't boot any more. It prints the message "Loading udev...SCSI subsystem initialized" and then the VM crash and the window is inmediately closed.
I searched on the Vbox forum and others have the same problem.
    See: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. … 890#p83890
Probably is an issue with Arch, because a clean install from core iso does work, but does not after updating.

What do you mean under updating ? pacman -Syu ? And what packages was installed?
Isn't there any virtualbox log or something ?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Just use your backup to put everything back.  This is one of the many reason that backup are very basic.

    clean the disk.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.
