Is There or Is There Not a Battery Recall/Replacement?

I have a MacBook Pro battery A1175, ending in U7SB, and it's kerput! Dead! Zero storage. I've seen several references to a so-called silent recall. Is such a program in existence? and, if so, how does one get started?

There are actually two battery replacement programs now. The Retired Engineer is correct - there are known issues with MBP batteries, and there's a replacement program described on the page he links to.
There is also recall, and it is not silent. It is, however, only for certain specific serial numbers. Your model and serial number are listed on the recall battery exchange page, so you can fill out the form on the right side of that page.
Here's the direct link (I was able to navigate there from the support home page in 3 clicks):

  • Power book will not charge, battery just replaced.

Recently the power adapter or the power connector on my computer would easily disconnect from each other.
This morning I noticed that it was not charging at all, played around with it trying to jiggle it into place yet it does not have any connection.
Before I go and spend $100 on a new charger,or $200 on a service bill, is there a way to tell if it is the adapter or the connector on the powerbook.
I noticed on the cylindrical plug that the silver tube has seperated and was wondering if that would have to be sealed in order to maintain a ground.
I know it is not the battery as I was able to get one on warranty, through apple care, and it charged full last night, which it is showing 4 hours left.
    Thanks

is there a way to tell if it is the adapter or the connector on the powerbook.
The easiest thing to do is go to an Apple store where they will have a working power adapter, or if you have a friend with one, use it. It sounds like the female socket itself may be shot, which would require replacing the DC-in card, which is around a $75+ part, plus labor to install.

  • Local Apple Stores/Repair will not honor battery recall.

I put my serial numbers 12" PB and battery in to this page https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/index.html and the response clearly indicates that I am eligible for the battery exchange, but the Apple store at Siam Paragon in Bangkok (run by http://www.copperwired.co.th), Thailand will not honor the recall and wants me to pay. Customers are not even supposed to have to drop off their old batteries first but I was asked to and now have had not battery for more than a week! I cannot find a way to get help from Apple.

Well, as I said, try calling AppleCare. Any person you end up speaking with, you can take your problem to them and explain what took place. I'm sure they will help you from there.
I thought maybe there was an actual Apple Store in your area. There are some in Great Britain, so that's where I was coming from.
But yeah, your best bet is dealing with the real Apple themselves. Since those drop-off centers, even if they are Apple Authorized, won't give you the same answer/help as going straight to Apple.
Give AppleCare a call. Or even, that number for placing orders and when they ask, tell them what your problem is and they should redirect your call to the right person. (Now that I remember, that's what I did. 1-800-MYAPPLE. I told them I was trying to order a battery replacement under the recall, and that's how I got connected to the right people. Funny how your memory gets clearer at the last minute).
Good luck! Wish I could be of more direct help to you.

  • My battery recall replacement battery just died :(

My nearly-three-years-old iBook G4 had a battery that was part of the infamous bad batch that had to be recalled so dutifully I entered my details to the recall page got my replacement battery and sent off the might-potentially-explode-at-any-time unit in the UPS box to be disposed of by Apple. This was a year ago or so I can't really remember.
Yesterday I unplugged my iBook and took it downstairs to copy some files over to my external hard drive, plugged in the firewire cable, started copying and then - foomp - my iBook just switches off. Odd thing to happen I thought - not so odd more oh-god-no! was that it wouldn't switch back on.
After pressing and holding the power button and removing and replacing the battery a few times I get a bit scared. My white plastic wonder is dead! I take out the battery one more time and press the button to give a charge status and it gives no lights! Not even the one green blink for 'please charge me now I'm thirsty!'.
I get the power adaptor and plug it in to the wall and the other end into my iBook (no battery inserted yet) - green ring lights up - press the power button and I get the reassuring chime! Yay! iBook lives again!
When I finally get booted into OS X I plop the battery back in the power plug light turns orange and the menu bar shows 'Charging..." and the battery shows 0%?
Zero percent? How come? My iBook stays plugged in the vast amount of time fully charged up and ready to go, every now and then going cable free to be my internet browser while I watch TV in the living room.
But after some time the menu bar still show 'Charging..." and "0%"?
I leave my iBook there for some time more, the power plug still glowing orange, before I check the underside and the battery is cold (far colder than the rest of the now mildly warm iBook), so definitely not about to explode. Good news.
I try all the usual tricks like resetting the PMU and PRAM and NVRAM and permissions etc. etc. but still "Charging..." and "0%".
My other battery (a spare I bought a few months after my iBook) works fines and charges lovely so my iBook isn't to blame.
Here's what I need to know - is this battery a goner? Can I send it to Apple to be repaired in some way (I doubt I'll be able to get a warrantee replacement out of this I'm fairly sure coverage is out) or do I have to go the whole hog and spend £90 on a new battery?
    iBook 12" 1.2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I imagine you have already checked to see that your replacement battery wasn't also recalled. But you might check and be sure how long ago you got it and how long the warranty is--very possibly it might still be under warranty. I think you can find all this out by calling the Apple store, as they can look up your account. They might also be able to tell you how to report this to Apple, as it might be indicative of another battery problem that they may not know about yet. I think these batteries are actually manufactured by Sony and others, and if there is a defect, the manufacturer--and not Apple--will bear the cost of repair or replacement. So Apple might be willing to help you here. It's at least worth a shot. Apple likes to have happy customers.
    Good luck!

  • Battery recall: Replacement arrived

There are no instructions on how to return the old one. Guess I am now the proud owner of two batteries. Wonder what's wrong with the old one and if I should continue using it...

Hi all, maybe you missed it or maybe you didn't get the booklet included but my shipping label was in the book....any how the UK number for UPS is 08457 877 877 and make sure they know its a PREPAID RETURN SERVICE LABEL. I got my battery within three days of order of the recall, out it back to UPS on Thursday and for fun later checked the tracking, seems my little package back to Apple got stuck at UK customers because they xrayed it - being a bit funny with batterys through scanners etc! My new battery is holding more charge than the old one - just remember to calibrate the batter page 24 I think of the macbook pro manual! Cheers Andy

  • Battery recall replacement?

Batteries have been reacalled . . . so we ordered the replacement. Now what just wait 4 to 6 weeks, or use the ac adapter. This is crazy. For the amount of money we've paid for these laptops they should be able to send out batteries sooner. And They are laptops . . . they are not ment to be plugged into the ac adapter. I have a long international flight about 18hours and does apple expect us not to use our laptops when we travel. Why the **** did we buy a laptop then. Ok . . . enough of me venting. I would like to know if anybody knows where i can buy a battery maybe from another company that I can use while i travel in the meantime while apple torture's us to wait 4 to 6 week. Its just unheard of!!

I bought a new battery for my 12" Powerbook in the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan just after I heard about the recall - as far as I know, the "four to six weeks" is the time it will take to get the replacement battery by mail from Apple, having registered on the web site (this I had no trouble doing that same day). We were heading out west on a two week trip and didn't want to go without a battery, so buying a new one was the only way around that problem.

  • Battery recall? charging Tips Burnout

My charge tips keep burning out every two months i get new ones, i use the Kensington charger because its way cheaper than buying a new mac charger and i heard that there was a battery recall is this true? if so am i applicable because my computer gets so hot I cannot even rest it on my lap for an extended period of time...its bad. last but not least, could these two problems be related???

Hi, MonkeyRat, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
What is a "charge tip," please, and exactly what is happening to yours?
There is a battery exchange program for certain batteries within specific serial number ranges that were supplied as original equipment in Aluminum Powerbook G4s and some iBooks. No Titanium PB battery is eligible for replacement under that program.
    https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/?
Using a third-party AC adapter might be part of your problem, but until your Powerbook is properly tested using a known-good Apple adapter, you won't know.
Using the PB on your lap, which is a pretty effective insulator, prevents it from dissipating heat as efficiently through its bottom panel as it's designed to do — when used as intended on a hard, flat surface, with airspace underneath it provided by its small rubber feet. Resting it directly on your lap or any other soft surface (an upholstered chair, a bed, etc.) is not only uncomfortably hot for you, but it actually makes the Powerbook run even hotter. Don't do it.

  • My MacBook Air 13' (2013) will occasionally start the fan at full blast, not connect to any wifi or detect any wifi, and will remove the battery icon from my menu bad as well as tell me there is no battery connected. How do I fix this?

My MacBook Air 13' (2013) will occasionally start the fan at full blast, not connect to any wifi or detect any wifi, and will remove the battery icon from my menu bad as well as tell me there is no battery connected. How do I fix this? I have restarted my computer multiple times, **** it down, and ran a diagnostic test to tell me nothing is wrong and my computer is not running any applications. There is no reason for the fan to be on full blast! when I try to set the option to show my battery icon in the menu bar, it will automatically uncheck. How do I fix all of this?

Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

Being a 2009 model, it is likely the battery is worn out. Take it to a service center and have the battery replaced.

  • Is there any alternative battery for Nokia X2-00?

Hi there, I was just wonderin'... is there any alternative battery for Nokia X2? coz BL-C4 battery is a li'l bit short for its lifespan. It could only take a few hours to play some music (through headset/loudspeaker)
    please help, thanks in advance...

    Hi Hanumantji,
Can you provide us your phone model? One possible reason why the phone hangs is that there is not enough memory available to carry out phone functions. You can move your data files from phone to memory card (provided that your phone supports Memory Card). If still the same, you can try to restore the phone to its factory settings as indicated on your manual.

  • I'm going on a long trip. Is there an external battery for iPod?

I'm going on an 11 hour plane ride. My iPod 80GB may last 6 hours (movie watching). I did a seat search for airplane and there is not an outlet near my seat to recharge iPod. Is there an external battery or something that can be used on long trips so I can continue to watch movies?<

I just recently listed a few options in another thread. See here...

    PS I hate punctuations

You may hate punctuation, but you'll find that many of the people with whom you try to communicate, including prospective employers, find it an indispensable aid to clarity and understandability. Without it you're just babbling formlessly, and whatever you're trying to say is so hard to decode that most people, including me, won't bother.
