Is there risk in partitioning an external HD that has existing files on it?

I have a 1TB external hard drive which has a lot of movies, songs and photos, etc. which I don't have backups for. The hard drive has 500GB left, and I want to make a partition of 400GB for Time Machine. I have heard that if you make a partition on an external hard drive, everything will be wiped, which would be a disaster. Is this true? Has anyone had any experience with this?
Thank you.
James.

if you really reformat the drive this will completely wipe it, yes. there is also a procedure for splitting an existing partition in two. that will not wipe it. enter "create new volumes' in Disk utility Help to see how. but it will almost certainly not work if you only have 500GB free space on the drive and want to make a 400GB partition. disk utility needs a single contiguous piece of free space to make a new partition and it's extremely unlikely there is one now due to disk fragmentation. but more importantly. ANY partitioning operation can fail and should not be attempted without a backup. furthermore. you plan appears to be a very poor one to me even if it works. you have a lot of data that's not backed up and you want to make a TM partition on the same drive with all that data?? the data in the non TM partition will still not be backed up. if something happens to the drive you'll loos EVERYTHING on it. I suggest you get another drive and use it to back up the data on this one and on your main internal drive.

    I would like to partition an external hardrive that is formatted to windows (Windows NT Filesystem) but the '+' box is greyed out, can anyone help? I have existing data on it and i would like to partition it to use with time Machine.

    Hi,
    Cheers for that. Do you know of any way I can format without erasing data?

    Not unless the developer/Apple offer it again in the App store.  You can only get apps from the App store.

  • Can I use Time Machine on an external drive that has files already on it.

    Please excuse the silly question. New to mac, from PC.
    I have a 200g external hard drive that has my itunes library, photos and other assorted files on it.
    If I use time machine on this drive will it delete everything that is there, or can I use it in conjunction with the other files that are there?

    You can use a Time Machine drive to save other files on it but I think time machine formats the drive when you first activate it so you will have to temporarily move your files while that happens. You best bet would be to partition the drive into a time machine portion and another for your files.

  • Accidentally partitioned my external drive that had my footage on it...lost EVERYTHING

    Okay, so here the the deal...
    I have a 6TB External G-RAID Hard Drive that I use to house ALL of my footage, projects, etc. I wanted to back this drive up, so I purchased a G-SAFE. I was following the instructions to partition the G-SAFE and i accidentally partitioned my G-RAID...3 times. I have run Disk Drill and Data Rescue 3 on the drive, and it seems to be able to find everything....but there is a bit of a problem:
    It's only completely recovering the video files that I had deleted from the drive at some point in the past. It is finding the movie files that were partitioned, but the files are VERY small, (KB's, when they are actually MB/GB's), and are not playable.
    I am far from savvy with Hard Drive recovery/lingo, but I was wondering if any of you could help me out.
    I am working on a documentary at the moment and have hours of priceless footage that I can't access....so you can understand my panic...

    The consumer level file recovery programs will not save you.
    Stop using the drive.
    As Nick already pointed out, the next step is to call a data recovery service. Once you have talked with them, you will no longer think of your material as "priceless". You'll have a very large number to think about and with no real guarantee of success.
    I second the "start re-acquiring" suggestion.
    Good luck.

  • Can i partition an external drive that im using for time machine? its not an actual apple TM....

    I'd like to partition my drive to make a separate place just for itunes music , is this possible? if so, how ?
    thanks!

    Not a good idea...If that drive fails (and they All do at some point in time) you will lose both your TM and iTunes Backups.
    Invest in another EHD for iTunes.

  • How can I use iTunes without connecting the external drive that has all my music on it?

    I have all my music on an external drive.  Sometimes I would like to access iTunes, for purchases and other, without having that drive plugged in.  I used to be able to do this, but something has changed and I can no longer figure out how.  There must be a way.
    Thanks

    Well, you can always ignore the fact it will automatically direct anything to a new blank library it will create on the internal drive.  Just let it do it (as long as you keep track of any purchases that download, or maybe you can turn off automatic downloading )  The next time you need to use it with the external drive hold down the option/alt key while starting iTunes and select the library file on the external drive.

  • Timemachine doesn't show external drive (that has now died)

    Hi, I've had timemachine backing up my HD and two external firewire drives (one with my 11gb iphoto library on it).
    If I open the timemachine generated Backups.backupdb folder in the finder, the contents of the 3 drives are all there in separate folders. Fine.
    One of the external drives has just died, so I want to restore my iphoto library (i.e. move it from timemachine to the other external drive).
    But when I enter timemachine, the dead drive doesn't show up.
    If I try to copy the file I want to restore via the finder, it says it will take 450 hours!
    What can I do?

    Do NOT copy the folder via the Finder.

  • Is there a way to format text data that has been persisted?

    I am persisting five lines of numeric data in my app.  Each persisted line of data saves and returns perfectly after a ro-boot, except for the text size and color.
    To be clear : If I save 199.55, that is what appears after a device re-boot.  The 'formatting' I am having issues with it the font size and color.
    For some reason, the font sizes have changed and some of the font colors are incorrect.
    Is there a way to correct this or prevent it from happening?
    Thanks.

    If you are saying that I can only save text data, I can accept that.
    But, why then does my saved data come back in its own colors and various font sizes?
    Thanks for your post.

  • How can I boot from an external HDD that has an OS install on it?

    Hello,
    I have Windows 8.1 installed on my 500GB LaCie external HDD and I am trying to boot my mac from it. I haven't had any success. Thus far, I am able to get to the Startup Menu from holding the option key and Windows does show up. However, when I try to boot it, it says "No Bootable Device Found."
    Keep in mind, the hard drive has Windows 8.1 installed on it. It is not a drive to install Windows through Boot Camp.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Firefox has just stuck. If it upgrades automatically then it failed. There is a small dialogue window open that has no words, but I suspect is related to Firefox.

    I have a MAC desktop and the firefox program has just stopped working and will not close and prohibits even shutting down the computer. There is a small dialogue box open but it has no words in it and I suspect it may be a malfunctioning part of an update. I have seen other support websites that seem to be teaming with similar problems with firefox, but with no solutions. I can use the rest of the computer, but it appears more sluggish and I have to constantly work around this window.

  • Is there a way to end a method that has no return type?

    Without using an exception, as they are costly I am told, and without using may if then statements, is it possible to end a method if some criteria isn't met.
    example.
    public void doThis(){
      // the method relies on the state of some
      // other things.
      if(!someBoolean) endHere
      // then following is the rest of the method.
      // I'd like to be able to do this so that the "meat"
      // of the method is located under the conditions
      // that must be met.
    }... Any thoughts?
    Thank You

    No need to hide or commit ritual suicide, the "void" keyword could lead you to think that your method can't use the return statement. At least you wrote code to investigate and didn't spend 10 or 20 posts asking for verification. Be aware, some folk will tell you that there should be only one exit point from the method, often this is true. In large methods you can get lost in the execution path if there are multiple exit points. I think it's a judgement call.
    As for returning a bogus boolean, but, from a design point of view, if your method really doesn't have anything to return to its caller then the signature should reflect that with a return type of void (I know you are suggesting returning the bogus boolean for a different reason, and you've abandoned the idea anyway, I'm just being pedantic here)(indulge me). Returning a bogus boolean makes the class method more difficult to understand from a design and JavaDoc point of view because I, as the user of your method, will see it returing a boolean and expect to be able to use that value, and it might color my view of what the method does.

  • HT1414 Is there a way yo recover a phone that has gotten wet?

    My phone got wet this morning.  I dried and shook out some water.  I then let dry for the next 5 hours.  I have tried to restore through the iTunes site but no luck.  The Apple logo keeps flashing on the screen every 15-20 seconds.  Is there any hope of recovering?

    place in a bag of rice grain for 5/7 days then when it still doesn't work take it to an Apple Store genius bar for an out of warranty exchange unit $199 in US

  • Is there a clock/radio for the 3G that has USB for syncing to my Mac?

    I'd prefer to have only one dock for the phone instead of two on my desk.

    I've never heard of a clock/radio including a USB hub function, but I can only assume if a 3rd party manufacturer of a clock/radio that is iPod and/or iPhone compatible thought there was a market for including a USB hub function with their product and obviously being able to charge extra for it, there would be one available.
