Is there spyware on my mac?

ok, this may sound silly, but i am concerned that someone has downloaded a spyware type program on my mac, and can read all my emails.  is that possible?  how can i find if it is there?  i am just learning as a first time mac user, to add insult to injury...

is that possible?
In theory, sure.
how can i find if it is there?
Without doing a great deal of forensic work, you can't.
What you can do, if you have reason to suspect that your computer has been tampered with, is to back up all your data, erase the hard drive, reinstall and update the OS from original media, reinstall your applications from known-good archives, and then restore your documents and settings from backup.

  • Is there spyware for mac?

Do i need to install get any of the spyware cleaners for mac like i had on pc, or is that stuff pretty much history?

    Kappy,
My daughter says a friend of hers thinks some spyware was installed on her Mac by a jealous (ex)boyfriend. How can she be sure her system is clean? Is there a way to check to see if spyware was deliberately installed by someone other than the primary user?
    Thanks.

  • Spyware/malware and Mac Mail

Here's the deal... I've been having trouble with my cable email provider not accepting my email password. It's my second email account so I don't pay a lot of attention to it. Anyway, I found out they have been blocking my email account since 4/10/14 because somebody has accused me of spamming, which I haven't done. They didn't bother to notify me, they were waiting for me to call them.
Well, to get this email account up and running again, they want me to run a spyware/malware program on my Mac. How is that going to prove anything to them if I'm supposedly the one doing the spamming? What program should I run and won't I be open for trouble on my computer by doing so.
I asked the guy how they would know if I ran the software, "We'll just take your word for it!" is what he said. ??? Anybody have any suggestions?

Tell them you ran Sophos Home AV Mac. It's free. You can even really do a scan and then uninstall it--or keep it. It comes with an uninstaller. If it finds anything, it will probably be something that will only run on Windows...or it might just find some adware. I'm actually using it on 10.8. It slows things down a tiny bit sometimes, but that's the only issue I've seen with it. If you were spamming, it could mean that you had inadverently been enlisted in a botnet. But there are none for Mac as of this writing.

  • How do i check i fave virus or spyware on my mac?

Hi i am a new user of mac i have a iBook G4 and a Mac OSX. I am a dab hand at using PC's and checking for virus etc but i don't understand how and where to even look to see if i have any virus's or spyware on my mac's. Can anyone give me information as to where in the system i have to look. But please remember i am a newbie to this and not very good with computer terminology.

Hi, zedzed, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Viruses and spyware are non-issues on a Mac running OS X. There simply aren't any viruses "in the wild" that can attack one. Someday there may be, and if you're nervous about that possibility you can download and use the freeware ClamXAV antivirus utility. Most Mac users I know don't use any antivirus software.
As for spyware: certain commercial application packages send info about your computer back to their developers as part of the required installation/registration/activation process, and if you want to use those applications, you're stuck with that. Some people regard it as spyware, a term with no universally agreed-upon definition. But I haven't heard of any Mac-based spyware resembling the many virulent and malicious Windoze-based forms. And OS X is inherently far more secure against every sort of intrusion than Windoze has ever been.
You've posted your question in a forum devoted to questions about the old Mac OS 9. If you have other questions in the future, you may want to visit the Discussions homepage and choose a forum that's appropriate for the subject matter of whatever question you want to raise. The question will then catch the atttention of more people who are knowledgeable about that subject matter.
    Enjoy your Mac!

  • Imunizator spyware on my Mac

I was surfing for TV/Movie sites and one site opened and told me some program was scanning my computer and I should get this Imunizator program to protect my computer from spying. Honestly I was not paying close attention because I either didn't have the choice to choose to download or I inadvertently chose and downloaded Imunizator and now it will not allow me to delete it from my computer.
Anybody know what this program is doing to my computer and how do I get rid of it?
    Thanks in advance.

It's "scareware" and is trying to get money from you ...

When you say you can't delete it, what exactly are you doing ?
If it's running then use Activity Monitor to Force Quit from it then delete it.
If it's in your startup items remove it from there too

  • I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.
This might be of some interest to you at this time: Life After MobileMe.

The Presenter Video Express is a screen and web cam capture tool. The PPT integration and functionality is Widows only.
You may want to look at Captivate, which has both a Mac and Windows version, and can work with PPT content.

    Yes, install Flash, right here.
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    Keep it updated, check here
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
    or here
    http://flashbuilder.eu/flash-player-version.html
Tell your son never to install Flash from non-Adobe websites
Flash and Silverlight are what's called web browser plug-ins that allow viewing of content on a lot of websites, it's so one format can be used with many different operating systems, computers and web browsers.
So once you install Flash (or Silverlight if you use Netflix) then it's used by all web browsers you may have installed.
However Flash can be used as a exploit angle, so  sure to keep it updated and not install it juts because a web site says so, bookmark the link above so you always download it from there.
(I won't trick you, I would be banned if I did, plus Apple knows where I live.)

  • Is there internet explorer for mac?

Is there Internet Explorer for mac?

If the developers of the site insisted on using Microsoft-proprietary technology such that the site requires Internet Explorer, then your only solution will be to run Windows on your Mac, either via Boot Camp or one of the virtualization solutions (Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox) so you can run the Windows version of IE. There is no IE for Mac any more, hasn't been for years, and almost certainly is not coming back.
I run Windows on my system and it works fine; no "pollution" has occurred. In circumstances like this, it's often the only, or at least optimal, solution.
company who makes the program now has a iPad APP.  Why put the money into an app but not have it available on safari.
You'd have to ask that company that question. It seems odd to me as well, but they obviously have a business reason for their decision.

  • I think I've been hacked. Does anyone know if it is ok to download spyware on a Mac?

I believe my email has been hacked. Can I download spyware for a Mac? Is this necessary? Any suggestions on good spyware for a MAC

Most cases where email is hacked don't involve your computer. The typical method is by gaining access to the email directly through the email provider at their website. In addition to changing your email password with the provider you may want to implement 2-step verification if they offer it (Gmail, Apple, and Microsoft mail services as well as other do offer 2 step or 2 factor verification).
If you want to scan your computer, the following link is to one that seems to be highly recommended. I have never used it or any other on my Mac. http://www.clamxav.com

  • Is there a Pages for MAC OS 10.7.x? If not, what is the alternative? Concrete issue is that I have received a .pages document and need to edit. Many thanks

Is there a Pages for MAC OS 10.7.x?
If not, what is the alternative?
Concrete issue is that I have received a ".pages" document and need to edit. I am running Mac Pro with OS X 10.7.
    Many thanks

It is important that you determine if the .pages document originated from Pages ’08, Pages ’09, Pages v1.7.2 (IOS 6), or was exported as Pages ’09 from Pages v5+ on OS X Mavericks. If it meets one of these criteria, then you can edit the .pages document on your Lion machine with Pages ’09 from the iWork ’09 DVD. Pages documents can not be opened with TextEdit, but can be viewed with Preview.
On the otherhand, if the .pages document was created with Pages for iCloud beta, Pages v2.2.1 (IOS 7), or Pages v5+ on Mavericks, then your only recourse is to edit the document with Pages for iCloud beta. Since Fall 2013, Apple changed the .pages document format into something even more malevolently proprietary. Apple word processing products since this timeframe, are subsets of the Pages ’09 features/functionality, and will filter out content they do not support.
A Pages ’09 document is usually a compressed (zip) folder archive that looks like a regular file to the Finder. The newer Pages family of products only write out a package that to the Finder, also appears to be a regular file, but in reality it is a folder. The newer Pages documents must be zipped before placed on non-Apple filesystems.
