  • ***CALLING ALL MACBOOK AIR USERS*** Will the base model of the 2013 Macbook Air 11" be enough for my needs?

    Ok,
This is my first post to this forum.
I have a Late 2011 i5 Macbook Pro. I used this last year during college but the weight was just unbearable. I have decided this year to upgrade to a Macbook Air. Here is my question.
I am starting uni and will be studying Nursing and so I will not be using any heavy software or progaming etc.
The only thing I will use is Office for Mac and browsing. I normally keep around 15 browser tabs open whilst I research.
I also like to download so I would also like Vuse on my Macbook too. I own an external hardrive and so memory isnt a big deal (unless it makes a difference to the performance of the mac itself, Sorry im not great with this stuff)
Do you guys think the base model of the 11" Macbook Air (1.3ghz, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD) will be enough for my needs or do you think I would need to custom build it (1.7ghz, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD)?
My boyfriend thinks for what im using it for the base model will be fine but I dont want to get it to find that its not enough as my main concern is lag but I also do not want to pay extra for something which isnt going to be fully used (ie my current Macbook Pro).
For those of you who do have the 11' Macbook air, how are you finding it? Also, this will be my main computing device, I am selling my Pro but am thinking of buying the wireless keyboard and trackpad so I can connect to an extenal monitor whilst im at home.
Thank you guys in adavnce for any answers.

I too have a 2011 mackbook pro and I also have a mid 2012 mackbook air 128 gb ssd and 4 gb ram , I am probably goint to sell the pro because I just don't use it anymore . If you intend to do heavy multi tasking 8gb ram as suggested by a previous poster might be worth the extra money.

  • I want to buy ipod touch 4 (8GB) , but i dont know is that enough for me

I want to buy ipod touch 4, my friends said i should buy 8GB one, but i dont know is 8GB enough for me to use. some people said that it only have 6.7GB for you to use, cause the ipod apps already used some of it. I want to have maybe 100 songs, some apps, pics, few games, 5-7 books, few online movies. For some of these, i would probably delete them and download new ones. So, any suggestion?? Please? I really want to buy it before this summer. but i dont want waste my money.

I would opt for the 32 GB one. Many users have been disappointed when they purchased the 8 GB since they quickly filled it.
Some apps can take 1 GB themselves. See the following for some other stirage useages:

  • Apple MacBook Air 2011 - powerful enough for most tasks?

I want to buy the 2011 model of MacBook Air 13” 128GB, but I have some questions for you guys, would appreciate it if you experts have answers:
    1) I'm currently on a two year old Acer Aspire 6920G laptop with 17”, Windows 7, Core Duo 2 (T5750 @ 2.0 Ghz) and 3 GB RAM - will my new MacBook Air feel one million times faster to use?
    2) Can I later (easily/cheaply) upgrade the MBA's RAM to 8GB?
    3) I mostly use web browsers, office software, IM programs, media players etc., but I will also use it a lot for electronic music making (with Ableton Live and virtual instruments/effects) and DJ’ing (with Avid Torq). I almost never do any heavy duty image work, and I rarely code/edit video - will the MBA be fast enough for the things I do most often, or do I have to get a MacBook Pro?
    4) How often does the fan start up? And when it's on, how much noise does it really make when it approaches 6500 RPM?
    5) I read that with Lion the fan is running more than with previous OS'es - can this really be fixed with booting in 32-bit rather than 64-bit? And what will that entail for the CPU power/battery longevity/software compability?
    6) Is the graphics adapter in my current PC (nVidia GeForce 9500M GS) much more powerful than the MBA's Intel HD3000, or is it almost the same now?
    7) Is it easy to run Windows XP or 7 in Boot Camp? I have a few Windows programs I'd like to continue using.
    8) Should I alternatively use a few more bucks and get a MacBook Pro with SSD-disk? Is that less "locked" and more compatible with what might happen in the future, technology-wise?
    9) Is it possible/cheap to switch the English keyboard to a Norwegian one next time I'm visiting Norway?
I have to make a purchase of a new laptop soon, so I'd GREATLY appreciate any answers. Since I have had software- and hardware problems with every PC I've ever owned, I frankly do not trust them anymore. So here we go then - Mac!

Let's see if I can help
1)The i5 Macbook air should be considerably faster than your previous laptop. Mostly because of the SSD and the i5 processor.
2)I'm not sure about the latest macbook airs, but previous models have their RAM modules soldered to the Logic Board, I don't think you can upgrade the RAM at all.
3)The MacBook Air might be fast enough, but Just, I would go with a Macbook Pro, mostly because it's easier to upgrade.
4)It will kick in several times but rarely at full speed, and it's not that loud. Would recommend a macbook pro for cooler running.
    5) I didn't notice any difference between Lion and Snow Leopard regarding fan activity. Lion is a 64-bit only system, there is no way to boot in a full 32-bit environment. Compatibility can be an issue with some software, ie. traktor users have been reporting problems with external hardware running Lion, but updates will fix these soon.
6)They are at comparable levels, the Intel HD 3000 might even be better at some point. It's much better than the 9400m that older macbook airs had.
7)Yes, as long as you have the optional super drive to install it.
8)Yes, that would be a better idea.
9)I don't think so, never heard of people swapping keyboards on Macbook Airs or Pro's.
I'd buy a MacBook Pro if you are planning to keep it for long. It's more powerful, more upgradeable and runs cooler and quieter than the air.
Hope you get your mac soon!

I zoomed in on a picture online by holding control and open pinching and for some reason, my desktop was enlarged as well. How I can't zoom out enough for my desktop to return to normal? I would like to be able to see my whole desktop without scrolling over to see the time or the file menu!

  • Is it good enough for gaming?

My question is actually does the Macbook Pro have enough of the graphics and stuff i'd be buying the i7 2,3ghz and 8gb ram
Will it be enough for running CoD serie and BF for instense?
    Greetz

Without knowing much about gaming, I would definitely say yes. Without any problems. As long as they are compatible, they should show up more vivid and beautiful than in other computers.

  • Is (4770 3.5 i7 qouad core 8 mb cach) good enough for premier and after effect?

    Hi guys,
am buying the new imac 27" with its maximum features: 32 GB, 1 TB ssd, NVidia gtx 780 with 4GB, but I am worried about the cpu (4770 3.5 i7 qouad core 8 mb cach) is it good enough for premier and after effect?

Thanks John, but I've already read that page. I have just a simple question about the performance of "4 core" and "6core" if anyone had already tried both of them.

  • Is the 13 inch base Macbook Pro Enough for me?

Hi, i am entering college in the fall and am wondering whether the base 13 inch macbook pro is enough for my needs. i have a very tight budget.. I will most likely carry this around 5 days a week, but i do want to dabble in a little photo/video/audio editing as well. I have a midrange dslr that i love to shoot photos and videos with, and i am starting to get into home recording audio, with an audio interface running mics drums and guitars. i am wondering if the base macbook pro is enough to handle all that i throw to it. i come from an old hp with a core 2 duo processor, 4 gigs of ram and a 500gb hard drive but it is having quite a hard time with all the editing id like to do. what do you guys think?

    Hey Chris,
i think the best decision you can do is that you buy the cheaper 13'' MBP and Upgrade it to 8 GB of RAM plus you buy a SSD and built it in yourself (if u have the know-how). If not there are Special Services from authorised resellers Where you can bring your SSD and Pay about 40€ for Installation (that's the way ist is Here in Germany). And until fall a 256 Gb SSD will probably Cost 170€ or less (in $ it Should be much cheaper)

  • Is the new macbook's performance good enough for me?

    Hi,
I didn't see any topic for the new MacBook, so I just put this question here, hope you people don't really mind, sorry for that.
My plan for next couple years on was to build a PC by myself, and buy a new laptop that have a nice design but can deliver enough performance for my need.  Here is what I was thinking about.
Sometimes I need to do something hard and intensive, also need playing video games for fun, which these are not quiet often.  Which is exactly why I want to build a desktop PC for.  Other times I need to use GIMP and I want to learn programming, knowing to use commands, or creating something new just for fun, also playing games that is not very intensive on performance (Minecraft, Left 4 Dead 2, GMOD(which could be intensive sometimes)).  But most of the times, I am just taking to my friends on internet, watching videos, or making a document maybe checking e-mails.
Consider about that, my laptop will be the primary platform, and only uses Desktop PC for heavy works.  It might also save some money for electricity :-)
My current Dell Inspiron 3000 was good, but sometimes I thought the N3530 was under-power, that does not benefits me on performance.  I have a mid-2012 MacBook Air from school which is faster, and is more than enough to do schoolwork and web broswing. The new MacBook I checked was pretty impressive and I like that design, but a lot of people have argued that performance, afraid that performance could only do light tasks.
These days I see the report that New MacBook was on par with mid-2011 MacBook Air on performance, so I guess it could benefits me.  If the performance is good enough, I will go with this one, regardless about price-performance thing.

Think of the new Macbook as a powerful iPad that can run OS X.....is that powerful enough for you? Sexy as they are, and I want one too, they're just an entry level computer.

  • Is 4gb RAM enough for me?

Hey guys, i just had a few questions, hope you can sanswer them? (i think this is my 7th question in 4 days )
    1. I heard that the 256gb or higher model has a samsung PCIe ssd drive, while the 128gb model has a sandisk PCIe ssd drive . Am i correct?
    2. If so, is the samsung ssd drive faster than the sandisk ssd drive? How fast? (is it noticably fast?)
    3. I am not going to play any game on my air. I am only going to check my email, listen to music, use itunes, watch movies, and so on. I am not going to use Parallels, however i am going to use bootcamp to install windows. Anyways, do you think 4gb of RAM is enough for me? I think the most RAM-using activity i do is open up to 20 tabs, but that's only when i read the news(i press ctrl and left click because i dont want to wait for the news to load every time). Anyways, do you think it's enough?
    4. Same question with number 3, except do you think i5 is going to be enough?
    Thanks!

The I5 MOST CERTAINLY more than enough.   8 gig upgrade is only $90, if youre going to upgrade (you cant do it later), that is the most wise upgrade choice rather than the 256 over the 128, unless cost is no issue.
I5 vs I7 benchmark tests show little difference between the two.
    Geekbench: i5: 5868, i7: 6287 (+7%)
    Handbrake: i5: 12min12s, i7:12min5s (-1%)
    Cinebench: i5: 11.13fps, i7:11.54fps (+4%)
    iMovie: i5: 5min1s, i7: 4min56s (-2%)
    PhotoShop: i5: 68.7s, i7:57.4s (-17%) <<<<only "real" improvement area of the I7
    Final cut: i5: 2min7s, i7: 2min 4s (-2%)

  • Is 128 gb enough for me?

My first Apple product was an iPod touch 5th gen 16gb, and I really didn't mind the low storage, since I didn't have a rear facing camera I didn't take a lot of high quality pictures. Then about six months later I bought an iPad mini retina (2nd gen) 16 gb, and was really excited because now I could take pictures and video. I quickly discovered that after a camping trip full of photos and videos that my storage was full. So my question is. Since I wasn't satisfied with the base model Ipad mini's storage level, will I be disappointed with the base model macbook pro retina's storage level and go for the 256gb instead of the 128, or will the 128 be enough for me. Just to help you along, I am a high school Student so I mainly watch videos, browse the web, do some files editing and creating, I do some very light gaming, and store photos and occasional video.

I would say to buy the 256gb one.  It probably is not that much more expensive and you will have two times the storage.  I say this because although you might not use a lot of memory now, when installing applications later on, or extensions for various browsers etc., the storage might eventually become a little small.  However you may always buy external hard drives and that will provide you with endless amounts of storage.
Installing your own drive might and most likely will void any warranties you have, so do that at your own risk.
    hope this helps

  • Is MBP 13" 2.66 strong enough for FCE?

I am making the switch from PC to Mac. I need a laptop for basic editing with both audio & video. I am more concerned with video editing, as my work has tons of audio PC's decked out. I should preface I work in radio, so my audio edits are mainly :10-:60 pieces. And my videos are 1-5 minutes in length, mainly YouTube stuff, I'm not trying to make Avatar here! I'm going to buy a MBP with Final Cut Express (I work with Sony Vegas Video 9.0 now). So the question! Is a 13 inch MBP 2.66 strong enough for me? Should I upgrade the ram from 4G to 8G? Or should I be looking at a 15 inch? Thanks!

    Hello Atpmixx,
the MBP has definitely enough horsepower to run FCE but it doesn't have much screen real estate ... personally I'd go for the 15" screen. Be aware that you will need to add external storage in order to edit effectively. Also be aware that FCE does not handle all formats/framerates.
Upgrading the RAM will not be necessary: Final Cut is still 32-bit software and thus can't use more than 4 GB of RAM ... in other words, it'll not speed up up your render times.
    hope this helps
    mish
