Is this a bug in ImageIO?  It gives inconsistent and nasty results

Hi everyone
Here's a stumper that I have been having trouble with and finally have a test case to illustrate it. First of all, the code:
import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import java.io.File;
import java.net.URL;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
public class PicTest
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
        BufferedImage buf1 = ImageIO.read(new URL("http://www.bestfoto.com/ArchivedPOTD/021606S.jpg"));
        BufferedImage buf2 = ImageIO.read(new URL("http://www.bestfoto.com/ArchivedPOTD/021606O.jpg"));
        ImageIO.write(buf1, "jpg", new File("C:/test1.jpg"));
        ImageIO.write(buf2, "jpg",  new File("C:/test2.jpg"));
}It's all very simple - we are pulling 2 jpgs from the net and writing them to 2 files. When you run it, test2.jpg is looking very nice. However, test1 is looking horrible and the color is completely off. Anyone know what's going on here? I've seen this on quite a few jpgs now and I'm thinking that there is either a bug in java's JPG codec or the incoming image is somehow corrupted. But, any web browser I try makes the image look fine.
What gives? Thanks!

Yes, I think this is a bug in java5 - it cannot write jpegs out because of a missing file in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ccm. The file is called PYCC.pf.
I forgot that I copied this file from a previous version of the JDK, 1.4x. Maybe this is my problem? But if this file is causing the problem, then taking it out would break the jpeg writer completely.
Anyone have an idea about this?
Thanks
I tried you app in j2se 1.5 and came up with this
stack trace for both images:

  • Refine Edge - Feather  gives stepped and ragged result

    Not sure if this has been answered, I can't find anything similar here.
    CS2 used to have Select -> Feather and it worked great!
    Now, in CS3 we have Select -> Refine Edge and it goes wrong almost as soon as I start moving the Feather slider. When I hit 250 (max) the resulting "Feather" has several extremely uneven and very visible steps in the blend. I usually have to go back and blur the result several times until the steps go away.
    Anyone else have this problem? Is there a better way to smooth selections before deleting, filling, coloring, blending, etc
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Most images are 8 bit. Scanner is 24 bit. The banding I mention happens with both.
    Generally, I select a small area. For instance, my scanner leaves a slightly darker 1/4" strip at the left edge. A slight light fall off in that 1/4" strip down the left side.
    I used to make a very narrow selection from top to bottom, at the farthest left I could go. Maybe 1/16" wide, and then feather it greatly. Then I can adjust it lighter and it used to work perfectly. Now with feather edge, I get huge banding.
    Also, when feathering a layer, such as a black vignette around the edge of a photo, pushing the feather edge too high up causes extremely noticeable banding.
    Why does the feather edge slider go up to 250 if banding is noticeable at 30 or 50?
    I need this feature to blend layers and transitions for web design all the time and it always causes huge problems with banding.
    Select -> Modify -> feather radius is very difficult to preview results. The Refine Edge preview is great, but the banding is not so great! It happens every time I use it.
    To my way of thinking, selection edge feathering is selection edge feathering, no?
    Thanks

    Every time Firefox opened

    Same thing happens to me. As far as I can tell, it just started a few days ago. I have made no changes of which I am aware. Today, I disabled Java Development toolkit add-ons. (One was already disabled, but one was still active.) I have only one version of shockwave flash running as a Firefox add-on. Having more than one version running is a known issue with Firefox. Reluctantly, I have just made IE my default browser, after several years as a devout Firefox fan. Pretty frustrating.

  • Is this a bug for 10.3.9 installation

    Hi everyone especially mac experts
    This is my first visit to this forum. I have been using my Powerbook g4 12 inch for 3 - 4 years, never had any problem til now!!
    My mac has problem all the sudden, got hacked or something, I dont know, I cannot even restart, it hung since apple logo appear, only way is insert install disc + press C with only one option it allowed me to do "erase and install" no backup no upgrade!!!!
    Anyway, that is not my question, it just a whining, my question is when i tried to reinstall with my installation CD that came with my powerbook and/or panther CD with 3 blacks and 1 codeX, which I got it when I was a member of developer connect. The series of problem are as follow
    1. during installation of CD2, i got installation failure with error messages said some packages cannot install!!!
    2. after i ignore (1), by click "quit" which is only one option anyway, os started to ask me to fill in all information include setting user name and password for admin account. so i did. Then I start to do "software update", and it failed to update/install QuickTime 7.x.x. Then i tried to download only, unpackage and install myself, it has the same results
    3. From (2) i search solution on mac website by using winXP, and found that i have to remove some packages in /Library/../receipts/ and reinsert CD 2 again to reinstall, cool.. i will give it a shot. Unfortunately, it asked for admin password and i could not give a correct password, but i remember and have it written down on a paper. Then i check at Preference->account->admin and see it shows 7 digits or * instead of 9 digits. I wonder that someone might hacked into my computer and change it.
    Therefore, I decide to reinstall again, this time, i spent more time by include erase disk with option "write zero to disk" and no network connection to make sure there is no trace from hacker! Unfortunately, I got the same problem from (1) to (3) without update software d/l. therefore, i believe (3)is a bug it is obvious from my observation, if i cannot solve (3) i will not be able to solve (1) and (2), and i will not have my mac back to work
    Please give me advice, i already lost all my data and spent my weekend trying to fix these problems, which non can be fixed (yet)
    Thanks in advance

    Roam,
    Thanks again for your suggestion,
    "Furthermore one should always Repair Permissions both before doing a Software Update and again afterwards."
    I honestly dont know anything about this "Repair Permissions" from the name, i though it is a verification of authentication to repair OS or some kind of credential issue, and since i m admin user then there is no point to verify it, i should be allowed to do so. Again it is my first time to do this thing in 3 - 4 years of using panther, every time i update software i never ever do this! If this step is essential for every update and installation why dont apple put them as one of TODO step during the processes (as licensing agreement) instead of keep them as an option (just my thought) Anyway, I m glad u tell me about it, and i will give it a shot tonight.
    "That may because you didn't have sufficient disk space. In fact running out of disk space can create all sorts of problems. Please tell me how disk space is available on your
    start up drive."
    That what I thought coz i have only 5.x GB left in 60 GB HD. Thats why I claimed as whining and have to scarify the lost of data by reinstall panther in order to get my mac back to work
    "So are you saying it is a bug or it is a hacker, I don't believe it is either"
    Please see second update info about password, and i m not impose anyone to believe, thats why the topic is a questioning sentence "Is this a bug.."
    "This Discussion site is not Applecare. The people here give their time voluntarily to those who are receptive to help."
    Thats why i ask for "mac expert" not "apple authority/technician" and always appreciate any suggestion.
    Anyway, that great to hear from you and i have learned new thing from your suggestion. I will let u know when i have tried it.

  • Is this a bug or a simple Newbie mistake?

    Hi.
    I'm brand new to JavaFX, so I'm probably misunderstanding something. I've searched the web looking for information concerning it, but since it involves the 'new' operator, it's hard to filter down.
    Anyhow, here is the problem:
    I'm getting different results when I instantiate an object
    using the 'new' operator vs. the declaring it the more
    accepted JavaFX way.
    This is how I found the "problem".
    In order to learn how to program in JavaFX, I found a simple game from the Internet, "Blasteroids", to look at (http://www.remwebdevelopment.com/dev/a41/Programming-Games-in-JavaFX-Part-1.html). I copied and pasted this into:
    NetBeans IDE 6.9 (Build 201006101454)
    JavaFX 1.3 and got the game to work.
    In playing around with it, I converted instantiating an object from the "normal" way:
        var a: Asteroid = Asteroid
            type: type
            posX: x
            posY: y
            moveAngle: moveAngle
            velocityX: Math.sin(Math.toRadians(moveAngle))
                * randomVelocity
            velocityY: -Math.cos(Math.toRadians(moveAngle))
                * randomVelocity
            rotation_increment: rotation_increment
            active: true;
            return a;To using the "new" operator:
            var a:Asteroid = new Asteroid();
            a.type = type;
            a.posX = x;
            a.posY = y;
            a.moveAngle = moveAngle;
            a.velocityX = Math.sin(Math.toRadians(moveAngle)) * randomVelocity;
            a.velocityY = -Math.cos(Math.toRadians(moveAngle))* randomVelocity;
            a.rotation_increment = rotation_increment;
            a.active = true;
            return a;This is the only changes I made. I would "toggle" back and forth between the two, and I would always get the same results.
    When I did this conversion, the ship would show up, but the asteroids were gone. Actually, I think they were invisible because every once and a while, my ship would "blow up" and get reset to it's starting position. I tried adding:
    a.visible = true;
    But that didn't help.
    Indecently, I did the same thing with defining the "Stage" using a new operator, and got differing results:
    1. the window would open in the bottom right of my screen (vs filling up
    most of my screen. I would have to drag it up to play.
    2. it had a regular windows border with the minimize, maximize, close
    buttons in the top right (vs. a non-movable, border less window with no
    maximize, minimize, close buttons.)
    Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you

    I suspect you've run into bugs in the Blasteroids program and possibly in Stage in the JavaFX runtime.
    For simple cases one would think there should be no difference between this:
    var so = SomeObject {
        a: 1
        b: 2
        c: 3
    }and this:
    var so = SomeObject { }; // or var so = new SomeObject();
    so.a = 1;
    so.b = 2;
    so.c = 3;However, these cases do run through different code paths. In the first case, the init-block of SomeObject sees all the values provided by the caller. In the second case, the triggers on the a, b, and c variables would have to modify the internal state of the object appropriately. If the object has a lot of complex state, the result at the end of setting the three variables (and running their triggers) might not be identical to the object literal after initialization. This is most likely a bug. If an object isn't prepared to have its state variables modified after initialization, it should make them public-init instead of public.
    Depending on the object, though, initializing things via an object literal vs. setting variables after initialization might actually have different semantics. This seems to be the case with Stage. The Stage's size is established by its contents at initialization time, and its location at initialization time is determined by using its contents' size and the screen size to center the Stage on the screen. If you create the Stage empty, and then later add contents, the sizing/centering calculations will be based on an empty Stage and will thus give a different result.
    Using the object literal technique is idiomatic JavaFX Script, and it's probably more efficient than setting variables after initialization, so I'd recommend sticking with object literals.

  • Is this a BUG???  Database Export not including Foreign Key Constraints

    I'm using SQL Developer 1.5.4 with both the 59.47 and 59.59 patches installed. I want to do a database export from a 10g XE schema, and include all objects in the resulting DDL. So, I select ALL the checkboxes in the export wizard and when I get to Step 3 to specify objects, I don't see any of my constraints in the listbox... no foreign key constraints, no primary key constraints, no check constraints, nothing. Is this a bug, or is there a workaround, or what could I possibly be doing wrong? We want to be able to use the database export feature to easily transport and track modifications to our entire schema using source control compare.
    Any help or alternate suggestions would be apprieciated.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Thanks skutz, we just figured that out this morning. Also, it should be noted that you need to be logged in as the owner of the schema otherwise selecting nothing in the filter will give you nothing, but selecting items in the filter will give you those items even if you're not connected as the schema owner. I wonder if that is the detail of the Bug 8679318.

    Load remote images in html mail setting does not get saved. I have to turn it off every time I log in. Is this a bug?

    Plug your phone into the wall charger for at least 30 minutes...make sure you have a sim card in the phone...then:
    Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.
    Make sure you have no anti-virus software running or any firewalls...turn all of that stuff off.

  • Is this a bug for drop down box in DS1.3?

    I found that if there were many items (e.g. 50), when I clicked the arrow of the drop down box, it showed the items and then disappeared all the items except "ALL". I have to use "F4" key to display all the items and use scroll bar to show the items.
    It is OK when there are few items and no scroll appears in the list.
    Did anybody meet with the same problem?
    Thank you.

    Oracle Database 9.2.0.1.0 on REHL 8.0
    exec DBMS_STATS.import_table_stats ('scott', 'ABC_XYZ', stattab =>'savestats' );The above statement executed successfully without any error.

  • Generating a List of References in FM12 to include External Cross-References and Imported Graphics, but no Imported Graphic references show in the LOR.  Is this a bug in FM12 or what am I doing wrong?

    and has always generated the list of references just fine.  Now in FM12, the LOR no longer will give any references for the Imported Graphics.  I have even tried creating a new chapter from the FM12 templates, adding the chapter to the front of the book, and allowing FM12 to use that file as the template for the LOR.  Still no success - it will not give any references to the Imported Graphics in my chapter files.  Is this a bug in FM12?  Is there something different about FM12 that would cause this not to work with existing FM11 files???  Please help, I need this resolved and working.
    Thank you,
    Beverly

    Arnis and Jeff,
    Thank you both very much for your assistance.  I was able to figure out why the Adobe Application Manager kept failing on installing the patches.  Idiot me didn't unzip them first.  Once I unzipped the patch files, the installer worked fine.  Both patches are now successfully installed; my FM version is now 12.0.2..
    To answer some of your questions:
    Yes, I have administrator privileges on my PC.
    Yes, I had all of the files in the book opened when I generated and/or updated the LOR file.  So that was not the issue.
    With the patches installed, I opened a book and all of its files.  I updated the LOR and all works fine – it gives me all of the Imported Graphic references. So there must have been an issue with that release of FM12 (12.0.0.329), which was fixed with the patches.
    Again, thank you both for your help!
    Best regards,
    Beverly

    Maybe find a local who can translate for you. I don't know what to tell you for dealing in another country for service on your computer.
    I can offer you something you can do if you want to give it a try. You'll need a backup of your data in your Home folder because you need to erase the drive. You'll also need a solid, preferably fast, internet connection.
    Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
          left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
            the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
          the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Lossy DNG shows strong visible differences but JPG not, is this a bug?

    Hello,
    I tried out the lossy DNG format with a lot of pictures.
    For most pictures I can't find any visible differences.
    But I found also some pictures with very noticible visible differences between lossless and lossy DNG.
    It seems that the lossy DNG format has problems with dark pictures with small light sources for example
    the stars in the dark sky or the red lights of an aeroplane in the dark sky.
    I have an example where you can see red security lights of a great antenna on top of a mountain.
    Surprisingly with this extreme example the JPG versions looks much better as the lossy DNG version of my source lossless DNG.
    Here is the cropped JPG from the lossless DNG (file size 10877KB):
    Between this JPG and the lossless DNG file is no visible difference.
    And here a JPG from the lossy DNG (file size 13261KB):
    Between this JPG and the source lossy DNG file is no visible difference.
    The source of both DNG files was a NEF File from a Nikon D7100.
    Also interessting is, that for this excample the file size of the lossy DNG is  greater than the lossless DNG. This seems crasy IMHO.
    I was very surprised, that JPG result is is much better than the lossy DNG for this case.
    Perhaps there is a hidden bug in the lossy DNG conversion process.
    I hope Adobe can look in to this. If you need the original NEF file let me know.

    JimHess wrote:
    I thought about responding the other day, but decided my remarks wouldn't help you. And they still won't because I'm going to give you my personal opinion about lossy DNG. I don't think it is intended for your master "important" images. I watched a video on Adobe.tv about this, and the example that was given was, suppose you have taken pictures at a wedding. Perhaps you have 2000-3000 images, 500 of which are keepers that are really good. You don't want to get rid of the other bunch but want to save space. So those would be the images that you would convert to lossy DNG. I mean, let's be realistic about this. You can't throw away data and hope to still have full raw quality. That isn't the idea behind the format.
    Personally, I think converting to DNG of any sort as a workflow routine is frivolous and unwise. I know a lot of people routinely download and convert, and then they don't have copies of their original raw images. Yes, I know, the DNG files contain all the original raw image data. But not all software will read those DNG files. For example, I use Nikon cameras. The cameras shipped with ViewNX 2. It's not a very useful program, but has a couple of features that I like to use once in a while. But it won't open the DNG files. And if I have converted and then discarded the original NEF files, I can't use the software. With my cameras there is only a 15-20% savings in space. The tutorial I watched indicated that the lossy DNG files would load in Lightroom up to 8 times faster. I haven't used a stopwatch, but if anything the DNG files take longer to load than the original NEF files.
    The only benefit I see to converting to DNG is if I have a file from a camera for which I don't have native support because my software is older or not up-to-date. I know this hasn't helped you. But maybe it will stimulate some conversation and you'll get a more enlightening opinion from someone else.
    First of all I want to use lossy DNG because I want save space.
    Second, I have no extra XMP-File for every image.
    If I can't see any visible difference between a  lossy DNG and a lossless DNG, then I have no problems with losing some data.

    in aaa class :
    RandomAccessFile raf;
    //get_ccc_tmp_names
    String[] get_ccc_tmp_names(String ccc_path_name) throws IOException {
    fil = new File(ccc_path_name);

    I envoled class aaa's method from class A. IOException occured at "C:\\aaa\\bbb0C.ccc" and "C:\\aaa\\bbb0D.ccc". It shows some other process were processing "C:\\aaa\\bbb0C.ccc" and "C:\\aaa\\bbb0D.ccc" when RandomAccessFile closed "C:\\aaa\\bbb0B.ccc" and try to open the last two.
    Then I try again with
    String ccc_path[] = {
    "C:\\aaa\\bbb0C.ccc",
    "C:\\aaa\\bbb0D.ccc"
    Both the IOException of "file not found". oops!! the last two file names disappeared on the harddisk. Is this a bug??

    Not without you describing what in the heck you are trying to do.
    For now (Because I can't make heads or tails of your original question - not only does the code make no sense at all, but your formatting of it makes it impossible to read), I can guarantee to you that the problem you are experiencing is because of something you are doing.
    The chances of you finding a bug in a class as much used as RandomAccessFile is for all intents and purposes equal to 0.
    I would recommend that you deconstruct your code to get the smallest number of lines that still create your problem, then use a debugger on it to figure out what's going on.
    If that still doesn't help, post your question again, but make a huge attempt to make it plain and clear what you think the problem is, then someone can probably give you a hand.
