Is this a common sound problem on Leopard?  If so how do we /Apple fix it

I have just had the hard drive upgraded on my powerbook and as part of that had Leopard put onto that drive.
When I got the PB back everything looked fine as I ran through the registration, and upgraded to 10.5.1. Now I have noticed that the PB is quiet! Too quiet no sound at all is coming out of the unit. I look under the preferences and the "internal speakers" are grayed out and not a selectable option, and plugging in headphones results in no sound and "headphones" as another grayed out entry.
I have noticed on the boards about this being experienced elsewhere so I believed I have tried the reset PRAM - opt/cmd/P/R until you hear 2 boot sounds - this does not seem to help. Any ideas or do Ihave too go back to Tiger. Apart from this the new OS looks quite good but its no use if I can't hear anything

This happened to me, too!
First I logged out and in again... didn't solve it.
So I just shut it down, then sound was back again when I started.
I know I didn't provide any explanation as to why it happened, but just to let you know, that's how I "fixed" it.

  • Imac G5 Sound problems after Leopard install

Hi All, This is my first post and I hope someone can help. I have just installed Leopard and on restart I now have no sound on any applications. I am also having some problems with my Netgear wireless router as the wireless card drops the connection on ocassions.

I am having the same problem but it's periodic. One day I went to work with some video and there was no sound so I hit the sound button on my powerbook, assuming I just had the sound turned off and the icon came up on my screen with the universal cicle with a slash through it indicating no sound. It was like this for a couple fo days and then all the sudden one morning my laptop "spoke up" by telling me the time. It has done that 2 additional times since there.
Any ideas why? It never did this prior to Leopard.

  • Could someone verify this please: weird sound problems

Could someone please verify the following. Plug in your headphone into the headphone (minijack) port on the left. Restart your computer.
Can you hear the startup sound through the built-in speakers, or not? I don't think you should, but I do. I tried everything (PRAM, PMU reset)... nothing solves it.
I also hear a quiet clicking sound through the headphones when any sound comes on. It then goes away sometimes, but it comes back with a restart.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Could someone please verify the following. Plug in
your headphone into the headphone (minijack) port on
    the left. Restart your computer.
I keep speakers plugged into my Mac Mini to get better sound.
Can you hear the startup sound through the built-in
speakers, or not? I don't think you should, but I do.
Yes, this is perfectly normal. This is how the Mac's are designed. They will always play their startup chime through the built-in speaker.
The external speakers will not do anything until after the machine has booted up completely.
I tried everything (PRAM, PMU reset)... nothing
    solves it.
There's nothing to fix. It is working just as it should.
I also hear a quiet clicking sound through the
headphones when any sound comes on. It then goes away
sometimes, but it comes back with a restart.
This can just be line noise.
If you are talking about head-phones, then it's possible you are hearing noise from a loose connection. Try wiggling the connector and see if you hear the noise. If so, then it could be that you are inadvertently moving this connection when you move your head around.
Likewise, see if the noise appears when you move the wire around a little bit. If so, there might be a short in the wire.
If you are working with external speakers, then it could be that the speakers are amplifying some line noise that they are picking up. This can be noise that is generated on the circuits inside the computer.
There's any number of things that can cause clicking sounds like this. I would try other speakers, and maybe even a higher-quality audio cable and see what happens.
    Hope this helps.

  • New HD, problem with Leopard install DVD, How to reinstall OS?

    Hi,
My hard drive crashed. I'm travelling and am in a small village in rural India. No Mac shops around. I've managed to get a new HD (WD 80GB), now I'm having trouble with the installation of the OS.
Although I have my data backed up onto an external HD, I don't have the OS itself backed up. I have my Mac OSX Leopard installation disk with me. I thought this would cover me for exactly this sort of problem. But it doesn't seem to.
I've got the new HD in and it seems to be working. It's been formatted and it shows up ok when I boot up with the Leopard disk. I get past the question about language and accepting the licence terms.
Then it goes into checking source disk mode. When it gets to about half way I get a message saying it can't continue, Disk is dirty and it needs to be cleaned.
Well, I've taken it out and it looks ok. I don't see any deep scratches. Still, this has now happened twice.
I tried to copy the disk on another PC but it returned a message saying 'corrupt files'. So it seems as though something is wrong with the disk, even though it's not apparent when you look at it.
Now I'm stuck. My very original 10.4 disks that came with the machine are thousands of miles away, and inaccessible for all practical purposes.
The Powerbook has been registered with Apple since I bought it years ago, although it's not eligible for support any more.
    1. Is there a way I can download the OS X I need to get the show back on the road, whether from Apple or from a third party?
    2. Which version of the OS do I actually need for a complete new installation?
    3. What can I do about my apparently damaged Leopard dvd? Although I'd prefer to continue with Leopard, it wouldn't really worry me going back to Tiger for the next few months till I'm back in Apple-Mac-land. The main thing is to get the computer running.
    Any help gratefully received.

In order to use a correct install disc, it would have to be either the
version that shipped with the computer (when new) or a retail
version newer than that which shipped with it, in order for the disc
    to function in the computer.
In some cities, there are companies who resell CDs and DVDs
and they have a machine or tool that helps polish out scratches
so they can still make use of those discs; or at least not toss
away a potential profit. There may be a company or computer
user with the kit to polish scratches out of the readable side
of a DVD or CD disc. (They sell these, in many countries, too.)
+In the middle of nowhere, you may have to improvise; or find+
+someone with basic skills and simple tools. If only a lightly+
+scratched Installer disc is the problem, simple polishing skills+
+would probably make it more readable to the laser in the Mac.+
    • How to fix a scratched DVD with items you may have at home:
    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/67659/howto_fix_a_scratched_dvd_withitems.html
    • To fix a scratched DVD... (avoid toothpaste, etc.)
    http://www.yelp.com/topic/new-york-to-fix-a-scratched-dvd
{a google of the topic may help, if you can access outside
    of just one region, and if google isn't blocked, etc.}
Perhaps if the issue is only with the Leopard DVD install disc
you have, it may be cleaned professionally. IF you go there,
ask if there is a reduced fee for this (they polish the surface)
if for some reason, it still won't work after they are done.
In the states some shops that bought & sold DVDs & CDs
would pay much less for scratched-up ones, & clean them.
This would include the device or careful hand-power, to
get the surface layer of plastic as unscratched as possible
so the laser-beam reader can pass through the bad places.
    The idea of getting a downloaded version would be an illegal item;
and also those methods often get you malware or virus laden junk.
You could probably use the serial number of your computer and
visit one of the 'info by serial number' online services, to see what
version OS X your computer (and its original specs, build date, etc)
would have shipped with; so as to get a newer OS X retail disc.
That, if no other option were available.
An unused (not currently being run in a computer) official OS X
install disc, not one from a different computer model, and not
one too old, since older or equal (ie: 10.4.2, for a mid-2005 iBook
would require a newer than 10.4.2 retail installer for Tiger, etc.)
So, you see there is some kind of logic to getting a disc newer
than the one you don't have; or an exact replacement.
Someone who no longer has need for or uses the correct version
Installer could give or sell you their disc. But, a download is certainly
not something we'll go further into, since it would be illegal.
Sorry for the longish reply, it is going on 1AM here in the farther
north western northern hemisphere; and I should be asleep.
Maybe someone else will post a timely reply, given your location
and time differences. A real city may have authorized Apple sellers
with a service department or customer relations who may offer
some advice in regard to other services available. But almost
any place that can polish scratches out of a CD may be of help.
And try to not act too anxious about it; that may add to the cost.
Or a piece of fine chamois cloth (fine suede) and light rouge may work.
Polish in a spoke-wheel pattern from the center; not all in one direction.
And hope the optical drive isn't also dirty; as they eventually get that way.
Some places that rent movies on DVD may be able to clean/polish DVDs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My iPod Touch 3rd Gen is having problems with the touch screen being unresponsive, too responsive, freezing and constantly resizing. Is this a common problem? Is there a fix?

My iPod Touch (3rd Gen) is having problems with the touch screen being unresponsive, too responsive, freezing and constantly resizing. It varies between not responding when I tap the screen and acting as if I double-tap or tap and hold when I tap. Every so often it freezes for a minute or so and then comes back. The scren is constantly changing sizes too such that I often can't see most of the top status bar or other edges. This makes typing almost impossible, ruins most games and generally makes everything difficult, but otherwise the iPod is working correctly. Powering off, shutting down apps, letting it sit have not worked. This has happened once before months ago, but the issue resolved itself somehow. Is this a common problem? Is there a fix?

    Try this for the freezing

Or if they don't work put it into recovery mode

I've noticed that when wearing headphones the sound is much louder in the right headphone than the left one. This wasn't a problem before.  Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix if so?

    Did you try different headphones!?
If it's sounding the same thing on different headphones then you might have changed the Left-Right balance
Have a look at Settings -> General -> Accessibility
    There's a slider for L-R
If it's in the center then the headphone through which you're facing the problem might be damaged, try twisting the headphone wire of the speaker of the headphone (left or right) where you are encountering less volume.
If it's sounding altogether same on all the circumstances, the headphone jack might be damaged. Get your phone to the Apple Store and book an appointment
Try these steps and it will solve your question

  • TS1362 I am having trouble playing imported cds.  The tracks keep sticking which is a bit like buffering is this a common problem and can i rectify it.

Being new to the iphone I am having trouble listening to imported cds.  The tracks keep sticking a bit like buffering.  Is this a common problem and can it be solved just by addressing a general buffering problem which I already have on youtube but have not rectified as yet.
    Thanks Kaz T

If <alanfromnewtownards> fix fails to address the issue - turn off iMessage and Facetime in Settings.  Settings\iMessage, and Settings\facetime.
    Sync by cable to iTunes.
Leave cable connected, open Settings\iCloud and ensure at least Mail is on and dsplays your Apple iD email -  then turn iMessage and Facetime back on.  Ensure that in the ISettings...\iMessage...\Facetime page that the Receive at field and Receive video calls at email address is the same address as your Apple I.D.
    Resync when finished.
If still having problems with Facetime then check that the required port is open - allowing traffic in your router.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629
In some cases you may need to turn on Port forwarding and open the port manually to allow traffic through.  See your router documentation for details.
If having problems verifying, open iTunes store App on your pad.  at bottom of page, click on your ID and sign in. Go to your Account details (re-veryfying and answering security questions may be required to do this) - check all details are correct.
Finally right click your device icon in iTunes and select Reset warnings.  resync when finished.

  • My Airport Extreme just stopped working.  The message says ethernet cable not plugged in, but it is.  Cable modem works fine.  Is this a common problem?

My 2-year-old Airport Extreme instantly stopped working last night and is flashing the status light.  The problem description is that the ethernet cable is not plugged in... however, the ethernet cable is still plugged into the cable modem.  I checked the modem by plugging directly into my laptop... it works fine.  Is this a common problem?  Is there anything I can try other than sending it in for warranty repair?

At this point, before sending it back, I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

What kind of CD are you burning (Audio or MP3)?
If you're burning an MP3 CD, the songs must already
    be in mp3 format.
If not, iTunes will tell you that you have no songs
    in the playlist.
    M
I was making an audio cd. But I have since found out what the problem was. The files in my PLAYLIST I converted to aiff, since they were SDll files (I thought they were similar to AIFF, and they PLAY on Itunes...just won't burn.) When I selected the songs in the playlist and converted them...I thought all those files were converted, They were not. The converted files went into my LIBRARY, even tho I selected the ones in the playlist...and once I exchanged the SDll versions of the songs in my playlist. THEN they burned fine...but still...it's confusing..you say convert..it says it's been converted..and what they don't say is it's not been converted inside the playlist...where I had selected the songs...It just ADDED aiff versions..but only in the library...Anyway, that's what happened. But it's strange that it PLAYS SDll but won't burn them....and you'd think, logically..the ones you selected would change...but they don't. Playlists are mainly pointers to the actual files I guess...a sort of Alias..
At least it works now. But it's sad that the latest itunes does more, but also does LESS...as I used to be able to burn SDll files. Now I'll have to convert all my files to AIFF, and mp3's as I assume my ipod video won't play anything but mp3's?

  • While working on an app I lose all the data and all downloaded app.is this a common problem?

while working on an app I lose all the data and all downloaded app.is this a common problem?

Apologies. The second link I gave you shows an ipad so I thought it would be more helpful. If you scroll part way down, you'll see an ipad. I know that most say it's mainly an IE issue, but there is mention of turning off javascript.
In the link below Apple claims that it blocks third party tracking if you turn on 'private browsing.' But is the site you're dealing with actually third party browsing? And if it's already embedded on your ipad, will clearing history, cookies and data take out your google issue? I know that when I do this, within minutes a long list of sites never visited are back on in 'website data'. Also, consider turning off java script. On 'accept cookies' click on never.
To see all this on your ipad, go to settings, then click on Safari. On the right, try turning off 'accept cookies.' Turn on private browsing'. Keep 'block pop-ups' on. Personally, I would try one thing at a time. For example, first turn on private browsing and see what happens when you open the scrabble app.
Then go to 'advanced' and look at website data. You possibly never visited many of those sites.
Apple's take on it is that they're protecting Safari users, whether it's a mac or an ipad.
    http://www.apple.com/safari/
This is technical info on what's going on but it doesn't seem to offer solutions.
