Is this a cool macbook pro or should i return it.

Hi,
I'm a photographer and just bought my first Apple notebook.
It's a week 13 macbook pro and i updated everything ( firmware,...)
It idles at 43°C and with the dev/null running twice for 30mins it climbs to 75°C and then the fans start up slowly and lower it to 72°C where it stays.
Is this acceptable for a macbook pro or should i return it ?
Macbook pro 15inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1,5 GB RAM

There seems to be a very wide range of performance. Mine (a week 11 machine that works fine and doesn't feel too hot on the outside) never goes below about 52° C and occasionally spikes up to 75° C. Under full load it goes into the eighties, and the fans come on then, but not noticeably otherwise. This is quite a bit hotter than my G4 PB was -- I don't think I ever saw it above 64° C -- but the case is not really noticeably hotter. I'm not messing with it since I have none of the other complants. But I think an Applecare policy is probably a good idea in case the heat causes problems over time.

    See my Mac Malware Guide.
This issue is more complex than some of the responses you have gotten are indicating. You definitely should avoid Norton, but there actually IS malware out there, and all anti-virus software is NOT "snake oil." Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise, as they don't know what they're talking about.
Although you should be able to do without anti-virus software just fine, there are some perfectly good reasons to install it and some good anti-virus apps to use if you decide to do so. Further, even if you do avoid anti-virus software, you need to understand what the threats are so you don't end up thinking you're totally safe and do something you shouldn't.

  • Using icloud, why can't i share a document created on my mac, and while out of town, access the document on my macbook pro. icloud should do this.

I create a document at home on my mac.
while out of town on a trip and using icloud and my macbook pro, I should be able to access this document.
If not, what good is icloud.

'Documents in the Cloud' enables you to manually upload iWork '09 documents (only) to the iCloud webpage: from there is will automatically be downloaded to iOS5 devices, but you cannot re-download it to your Mac oir to another Mac until it's been edited on an iOS device, so it's not really suitable for what you want, and you cannot do it at all with other types of file.
You will need a third-party solution. SugarySync would be my recommendation - it can do what you want completely seamlessly - this page examines that and some other options:

I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them.

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

  • Should I get this mid 2009 Macbook Pro? Is it a good deal?

I am thinking about buying a Macbook Pro off of craiglist and was wondering if this deal is good?
I will mostly be using the laptop for school. This includes music/office/internet.
    15 inch
2.54 GHz Intel Duo Core Processor
    4 GB RAM
    250 GB Hard Drive
    OS X 10.6.6
    The price is $1100.
Should I nab this now or wait till they release the new versions around april? I figure if I wait till the new ones come out in april then I can nab a i5 that someone is trying to sell for cheaper.
Whats the best approach her guys? Looking for som opinions.
    Tanks

I agree with sig that $1100 is probably high. At that price, it should certainly be in perfect cosmetic condition, very clean, with a good strong battery, an AC adapter in perfect condition, and all the discs that were originally shipped with it. If you're buying from a local Craigslist offering, consider the following excellent advice on buying and selling from regular Discussions contributor JasonFear, and make similar arrangements with the seller to confirm the condition of the machine before finalizing the deal:

If you've activated FileVault, only the users that were authorized to unlock the startup volume will appear in the pre-startup authentication dialog. Once the system has started up, all users will appear in the login dialog.
To authorize more users after the volume has been encrypted, select the FileVault tab in the Security & Privacy  preference pane. Click the lock icon in the lower left corner and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click Enable Users...
You should only enable users whom you trust implicitly with all data on the system, not just their own data.

  • I have WIN 8 Pro to put onto an Intel MacBook Pro, how should I proceed?

I have a fuly updated MacBook Pro With an Intel CPU Late 2011 model, running the updated Mountain Lion OS, with 8 gb memory installed.
I also have a x'mas gifted WIn 8 Pro to install, hopefully via bootcamp.
I cant find much positive assistance via research, to proceed yet.
Can I use the Win 7 Boot camp assistant to install Win 8?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to both mende 1 and Chamar,
Seems I should have looked up this forum before I uninstalled "Parallel 7", but that's fate for you!
Luckily everything is backed up, so will do a restore, update to Parra 8 , and try from there.
I bet that as soon as I get this sorted APPLE will come out with an updated WIN 8 compatable Bootcamp.
Fate and Nature will always retain the upper hand!
    Thanks again boys.

  • For the 2012 Macbook Pro 13" should I get the 2.5GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5 or the 2.9GHz Dual Core Intel Core i7?

I am a high school student and I am getting my first Macbook Pro. I am not really sure which 13 inch Macbook Pro model I should get. My budget is kind of tight, but I think that I can afford any one of the models but I dont want to spend any money that I dont have to spend. Usually on a day to day basis, I use the web brower, watch movies that I have downloaded, and write a lot of papers. I also sometimes use Photoshop, and while I do not play a lot of games, I do want to have the option if I decide to later when I go to college. The larger hard drive size on the Core i7 model does not really matter to me because I dont plan using more than 500GB. I will be upgrading the ram to 8GB if I get the Core i5 model and it comes standard on the i7. Also, I need this computer to last me for 3-4 years so I want something that will still seem relatively fast a few years down the road. Lastly, while I would prefer getting the Macbook Pro due to its cheaper price and ability to upgrade the hard drive later, I also am considering the Macbook Air Core i7 model, mainly because of the faster ssd and the higher resolution screen. I dont really use the optical drive, so loosing it would not be a big deal. The same goes with the Firewire port or the Ethernet port. What would you guys suggest I get. A Macbook Pro or a Air and if the Pro, should I get the Core i5 or the i7?
    Thanks

If you're planning on keeping it for long term.
    Go with the i7 2.9GHz.
It's a $300 difference but with that you get; the RAM, Hard Drive and Processor upgrade.
Since you want it to last before you decide to either upgrade or buy a new one.  The i7 2.9GHz is a good choice.
Do remember that Mountain Lion is around the corner and other software get's updated to and wants more CPU power and more memory.
Nothing is wrong with the i5 2.5GHz either.  You'll just have to upgrade the RAM sooner in case 4GB isn't enough for you.
    Put it this way:
    i5 2.5GHz has 3MB L3 Cache Memory
    i7 2.9GHz has 4MB L3 Cache Memory
Now, you're also thinking about the MB Air, a very nice notebook which is light, portable and has a better resolution than the MB Pro 13 inch.  You have to however, keep in mnd that the RAM and Hard Drive in the MB Air is not user upgradeable and has no optical drive.

  • Best way to cool MacBook Pro

I've been looking at ways to cool my MacBook Pro down when gaming. I've come across two in particular: Targus Chill Mat for Mac [AWE41US] and ThermaPak HeatShift Pad. Any suggestions on which would work better or other options?

Found this post while doing my own search for similar reasons. It is hard to find a cooler that will have much effect on that upper left area that gets really warm. Most seem to be designed to blow air up into the middle/bottom of the machine and  exhaust from the sides. That is little help.  If I play an mmorpg like swtor, the machine runs very hot even over a short period of time. Here is where I am starting.
I am waiting on a Cooler Master notepal U3. It is aluminum and has 3-80mm fans that can be placed where you want them to blow. If I am able to get the result I am looking for I will probably replace the fans with something a little more robust and quieter.

  • Will this damage my macbook pro

Hi guys, I bought this macbook pro 15 inch i7 2.3 ghz for college in a few months. I wanted to also play a few games on it, (call of duty modern warfare 2, Left for Dead, ect..) My dad saw me installing steam, and he got upset, saying that he doesn't want my mac to be screwed up for college. He reminded me that I will be needing to store all my projects and info on this mac, and if it gets damaged that is a lot of money that will be wasted, and time. He doesn't think I should play games on here, because he is worried it could possibly do something to the computer before college rolls around. Do you guys think this would be an issue? should i still install them? Im worried he may be right, but I really wanted to game a little bit before college started.. Ill probably just delete the games during college.

Several other people have told me that this computer was built to withstand tasks heavier than gaming. I have not installed anything. Im just trying to get some input.
