Is this a defect on my iPod?

I bought an iPod as a Christmas gift for myself, and when I opened it on Christmas day, I immediately put on an Invisible Shield because of how "scratchable" the iPod is. I let it dry for a full 24 hours. Then I charged it through my computer. I added a few cd's I own to listen to in the car during a family trip. My iPod was working fine, and seemed perfect.
On our way home, it was getting dark outside, and I noticed this small white line (less than half a centimeter long) below the screen, on the right side, above the click-wheel. I then realized it wasn't a "white line" but light coming through. I guess there's some kind of scratch right there that's causing light to come through (of course when the backlight is on).
When I look at my iPod in broad daylight, or even right up to a lamp, there is no scratch where that light is coming through. I think it's maybe that there wasn't enough paint coating or something..
At first I decided to ignore it, because I didn't really want to return it, and wait for Apple to repair it (I bought it online). But I listen to my iPod at night, and hook it up with my speakers, and I can see that small line of light, and now it's getting annoying. I paid a lot for this iPod and I feel it should be perfect. Do you guys know if it's possible that I could return it to a local retail Apple Store and get a new one? Is it a problem that it's engraved?
I honestly do not understand why there's light coming through. There aren't any scratches and I really want to return it and get a new one.
By the way I have a White iPod, which is another reason why it took so long for me to realize the light coming through.
I'm not sure if my description of "the defect" makes any sense. I've tried to take pictures, but since the iPod screen is so bright it blocks out any other light and you can't see the line.

It is a defect and having it engraved is a problem. You could maybe get it replaced locally of course without the engraving or talk to Apple on the phone. If they agreed to replace it they will send you a return box in the mail to ship it in.
