Is this a dropping connection or a wireless issue....

Hi all,
We've been having some problems with our Infinity setup for a few months now and it's getting a bit annoying, I could use some help in fixing it
So, every evening (could be daytime too, we dont use it then really) our connection seems to drop every 10 mins or so. If I'm gaming, it will drop me out of a game and I'll have to reconnect. I can usually reconnect in seconds. If we're watching Netfilx, it will stop, and restart a few minutes later...
Oddly, the blue Hub lights (HH3 I believe) never falter, solid blue throughout.
Restarting the router (and white box thingy) works pretty much everytime - and only occasionally are we disconnected for more than a few minutes.
The setup is Infinity 2 I think, into the master socket. I'm running a handful of Apple devices, a home server, a Mac and a PS3. Probably important that none of these devices have changed at all location, spec or otherwise.
Occasionally my server cannot be found on the network either, despite it running continuously - a restart usually cures this but would it point to a dodgy router? (it's a wired connection,so no wireless issue)
I'm guessing I need to run some tests but not sure what?
I did try and call BT Support a while ago, but the chap said he couldn't help me because my Mac Air has no ethernet cable, just wireless

seems to me like a faulty router or modem mate, to make sure its not actually dropping fully you will want to login to the router page using 192.168.1.254 then going to troubleshooting and then helpdesk and it will tell you the uptime. login with the password which should be on the back of your router. do this when the wireless next drops. btw dont keep resetting the white modem, it will cause your speeds to drop as it will think its a line fault, just reset the homehub. if the uptime is less then 2 mins then its dropping fully, if its more than than lets say 1 hour for example (and you reset it one hour ago before the wireless dropped) then its most likely just the router being faulty.

  • E4200 Constantly Drops Connections (Wired and Wireless)

My E4200 seems to be dropping connections throughout the day.  For wireless it'll still show full signal and connection, but there will be no internet activity for about a minute.  Then after a minute things will work just fine again.
For wired I notice it in my XBox mainly when I get dropped from games as constant as the wireless drops.
I believe my modem isn't the problem since the old router never dropped connections on the hard wired devices.  Occasionally my old D-Link router would drop wireless, but never this frequent
I am running 1.0.02.  I've rebooted the router/modem several times.  I even reinstalled the entire setup with the current version of Cisco Connect as the tech person suggested, but still no help.  The first week or so using this router was flawless, but ever since then it's been dropping connections several times throughout the day to any device connected (wireless or wired).  The problem seems that the router just hiccups the connection very quickly, so quickly that Windows doesn't even recognize the connection has been lost, but long enough to drop a multiplayer game on XBox or to have me mashing refresh on my internet browsers.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I have not had this problem with my router and have had it since Feb 2011. I did have a range extender from WNR2000RPT Netgear that I had to reboot everyday and finally threw it away and bought the Linksys RE1000. The combination is flawless in my 3000sqft. house.  I will say though it may have to do with your setup and what channels you are on. I have my router setup just for wireless and not as a DHCP server and let my FIOS router handle DHCP. Just so I am not running 2 seperate networks in the house. I also gave my E4200 a static IP as well as the Range Extender static IP. So there would not be IP address conflicts that could cause for possible issues.  I did have a problem with the latest firmware disabling my USB for my external hard drive so I had to downgrade to resolve that issue.

  • WRT54G2 keeps dropping connection, wired and wireless

I have a Scientific Atlanta modem with WRT54G2 wireless router. Both are around 2 years old. In the past few months, I keep getting periodic connection drop, couple times a day, day on day off. I have 2 wired connections and 3 wireless connections to the router. I check with my internet provider, Cox, they say my connection is fine. So I guess it's the router or modem problem.
The funny thing is when connection drop, I cannot access any web sites via wired and wireless. However, my downloads in iTune are still running fine at full speed. I have to unplug and replug both router and modem for it to work again.
Is there a way to fix this? or do i need to buy a new router or modem?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's possible that Cox only recognizes the router's MAC address, probably the reason why you can't connect directly.
Anyway, try to lower the MTU settings on the router.

  • WRT300N, dropping connection speeds, losing wireless all together

I have a WRT300N with updated firmware (v.1.03.3) and have tried the magic beacon interval and RTS/Frag. Threshold tricks and I am still randomly losing wireless all together. Any suggestions please????

Try changing the channels... Set the radioband to standard instead of wide... and set the standard channel to 11...

  • Internet Connection - Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP.

I just bought an Apple TimeCapsule and set it up normally, following instructions to my Arris cable network on the Videotron provider here in Quebec, Canada. The TimeCapsule did appear as a wireless device on my MacBook Pro (after updating the AirPort software from the provided CD - as was instructed). I went through the whole installation process to obtain at the end this error:
Internet Connection - Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP.
The only provided instructions were to check the cable and then contact your Internet provider. Well it seems clear to me that if I contact my provider and say that the internet connection works fine directly on my computer, also fine through my "normal" wireless router but not with my new TimeCapsule, I won't get much of a response.
After a lot of research, a friend indicated the solution in my case.
You have to really reset the cable modem to convince it to start giving out IPs again.
    To do this:
    1. Unplug your TimeCapsule (possibly you might have to reset to factory defaults - see the documentation)
    2. Unplug your cable modem
    3. Reset your cable modem by pressing the reset button with a pen (or something) for several seconds.
    4. Plug your cable modem back in and let it reboot/restart - until the lights are back on.
    5. Plug in your TimeCapsule
Everything should now work and you can restart your AirPort set-up on your Mac.
    Good luck!

My ISP is AOL.  The service is DSL via a broadband modem.  Somewhere during the setup process there appears to be a communicatiosn issue between the Airport Extreme Base Station and the DSL modem.  When I hook the DSL modem directly to my iMac I can connect to the internet without any issues.
I tried the factory reset and the DSL modem reboot process described in other posts and seemed very close to success...until the internet setup step.  That is where this issue first presented itself.

Linksys wireless routers WRT do not connect wireless to other access points. WRTs are access points, not bridges nor repeaters.
dd-wrt add bridging capabilities. Remember, dd-wrt will void your warranty.

  • Wireless Issues after 10.4.7 update

    Hi all,
My wireless connection was solid since the day I bought my Macbook Pro. I had profiles connecting to my wireless router at home and my work wireless points at work. When I recently updated my system to 10.4.7, I have had some issues with my wireless.
Sometimes when I start my mac up, login, etc, the wireless icon in the system tray will flicker, and I have no connection to my wireless. If I disable and enable the Airport device, sometimes it just starts working. Sometimes I have to reboot the system to make it work. If the icon does not flicker, it works fine, when it gets into that state where it doesn't work, the icon flickers.
    Anyone else having these issues?
    Macbook Pro 15" 1.83GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1Gb RAM

I also had some dropped connections over my wireless
router at home (Linksys router) after the 10.4.7
    install. I have a MBP 15" W8617xxxx. Connection was
good for a few minutes at a time. Then I had to
    restart AirPort.
For me, I had installed some other apps about the
same time as 10.4.7, so I uninstalled them, repaired
permissions, installed the Combo 10.4.7 and now
    everything seems okay.
I don't know if it was the new apps, or the Combo
install, or repair permissions, or ?
    Hope that helps. Good luck.
    =================
    SDDave,
i have been reading a lot of postings regarding the issues with wireless after the 10.4.7 update.
i also have a linksys wireless router and have identical problems with you. i am sure many of us do as well.
you said you managed to install the 10.4.7 combo and everything seems to work properly now? if so, would you be kind enough to give me detail steps on how to install the 10.4.7 combo file
    1. do we get the combo 10.4.7 from the apple site?
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosxupdate1047comboppc.html
    2. what steps do we need to install this file?
please please help us out to provide detail steps to do this. i know some of us here are not as comfortable doing it without some help.
i would appreciate if anyone else would help out beside sddave.
thank you in advance. i can't wait to install this combo update to resolve this connection issue.

Then use multipel 99 picture slideshows.
You can have up to 8 or 9 slideshows per menu.  If you add a sub menu reduce that by 1 and add 8 more to the sub menu.  The top menu can have links to up to 8 or so submenus (depends on the theme) and each submenu can have up to 8 or so slideshows.
However, converting a very large slideshow to a QT movie as Terence suggested does not envoke the 99 slide limit in iDVD.  It just becomes a single video/movie file.  So you should not have a problem with exporting at the large size, 720 x 540,
and dragging the resulting file into the iDVD menu being sure to avoid any drop zones.

  • WRT54G wireless router irregularly drops connection

I've had a WRT54G wireless for about 3.5 years now, with a Motorolla SB4200 cable modem connected to it to provide internet service. The router itself is connected to a desktop PC and there are two laptops that are connected to it wirelessly, one of the laptops is old and has a Linksys PCMCIA wireless card and the other laptop has wireless built in to it.
I updated to the latest firmware for the router.
For more than a year now, the wireless connection has been irregularly dropping. Sometimes it will reconnect instantly, sometimes it will take a few minutes to reconnect, sometimes it will take up to 10 minutes. More importantly, the connection drops very irregularly. Sometimes it will work for weeks flawlessly and sometimes it will constantly drop several days in a row.
Today I haven't had any problems so far, but yesterday and the day before, it was dropping a lot. What I've noticed is it mostly happens in the evening, so I'm assuming maybe there is some kind of interference.
I have been told that wireless routers do have a limited lifespan and that mine probably is just wearing out and needs to be replaced, so I picked up a new WRT54G router for $50 yesterday, however, I haven't opened it yet.
Is it likely that my router is just wearing out and needs to be replaced, or is there some kind of interference going on? I am able to pick up a number of different wireless signals from the neighbors, but they are always there. Even right now as I am connected to the network typing up this message.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help wehowardjr.
I haven't actually pressed the reset button in a while, but I did unplug it for about 20 seconds then replug it just two days ago.
What is the nvram and exactly how do I clear it? I don't think I've ever doe that.
I use a laptop that has the wireless built in and I'm the one who uses the computer the most in the house, so I am the one who is noticing the connection dropping the most, so I'm not really sure if it is the problem with the laptop witht he PCMCIA card.
I'm surprised version 6 has problems. I would have assumed that it would be a great improvement over previous models, especially 1.0. I guess I should return it to the store then? Isn't there version 7 out now?

  • New iMac wireless keyboard and magic mouse dropping connections

Hi looks like I am just another one who's got problems with Apple's wireless keyboard (KB) and magic mouse (MM).
I bought my iMac 21.5 at the beginning of last Dec. For the first few days, I noticed that the connection between MM and iMac dropped perhaps once a day when I was editing some HD footage in iMove 09. I am rather new to Mac so initially I thought iMove was dominating CPU power hence the temporary drop.
But in the next few days, I found my MM dropped connection a bit more frequently like 3-4 times a day, during word processing, browsing in Safari or even when I am doing nothing. Plus I also noticed that the KB began to have the same problem as well. Well, in all cases the communications resumed almost instantly or shortly after I clicked MM or a button on the KB. It's only the on-screen notices are very annoying....
The situation got worse in the final week of 2010, the connection (both MM and KB) dropped more frequently and sometimes communication didn't resume instantly, instead the Bluetooth Setup Assistant pops up searching for available devices....and then finally connected. Annoyed by this I took the MM to the retailer and swapped for a brand new one (from a boxed iMac), came home and hey! problem solved! but just for a MERE few hours.
On the last day of 2010, after a couple "rounds" of drop-and-reconnect I was hit by the "Bluetooth Not Available" problem after a connection failure. Left it for some moments and no sign of recovery at all! Luckily and ironically I plug in my wired USB Microsoft mouse so that I can still navigate, went to System Preference and found the Bluetooth icon disappeared as if no Bluetooth hardware was ever installed at all! OK, turned off the iMac from the menu, waited and restarted. No joy and scary enough, I can't even get into the system coz I got log-in enabled but without a working KB to enter my password. Without a choice I dug out my netbook PC, arrived in this forum and found I wasn't the only one. Followed instructions here, did a SMC reset, PRAM reset, etc then magically everything is back! Once back in, I deleted the plist, deleted devices, restarted, re-favourite MM and KB, etc. The next day, I use the installation disc to perform a hardware check, but no problem found!
But always a but, the problem still persists, so a call to Apple technical support who suggested literally the same thing I've done above and asked me to monitor the problem in case it needs repair. Honestly, I am not keen to do that as the nearest Apple centre is far from me and always busy. Not sure if anyone here can shed some lights on my problem. I needa ensure all channels are exhausted before I bring the thing back to Apple for an inspection as a last resort...
    Many thanks guys

Hi, I post this because this is very similar to what is happening with my new 27in Imac.
Townsville March 05 2011 bought all singing and all dancing 27inch IMac with wireless KB and MM at new reseller grand opening. Straight forward out of the box. First night a kernal panic message and screen shut down and unable to start. Phonecall to apple care got it restarted with the apleoption+pr keys. Fine for a while, then repeated screen freezes watching eye TV.
Persevered, with similar repeated screen freezes. Reset memory for eye TV. Seemed to fix that problem, but during this time also noticed MM and KB were disappearing and not responding, only to come back by frustratingly turning them on and off, waving them near the imac and even turning the imac off and on manually, to have them come back for a while and even dragging out a cable mouse to navigate. Cut a long story short, I hoped it would sort itself. 20 days later while watching eye tv I noticed the mm and kb drop off. Cable mouse found the BT issue you guys have discussed. System Preferences showed no BT at all. Rang apple care. Went through the same drill and identified a hardware problem with BT which should be replaced, and after discussion about the other issues, suggested a replacement would be within range but to talk to the store, cause it was so new, took it back to store where my story was confirmed in a confirmation of the customers story check.....for a while.....
then all reappeared as if nothing was wrong, fortunately it was witnessed by the store, so off it went to Brisbane for the 4 day turnaround. Wednesday the tech rang BT MM and KB all working fine. Further explained all the above, so he has stress tested it and I am informed it is has displayed none of the bad behaviour and is working well and on its way home, hopefully by monday. So will keep you posted. No new mac offered, no replacement BT module offered.
PS I have only ever owned macs, still love them, and scripting this on my mac book, which incidentally, has never missed a beat.

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • Hi, I want to use my Capsule just as a back up via wireless. How do I set this up without connecting it with an ethernet cable to either a router or the iMac??

Hi, I want to use my Capsule just as a back up via wireless. How do I set this up without connecting it with an ethernet cable to either a router or the iMac??

I misunderstood what Time Capsule is and had hoped for a wireless backup device that didn't have to be connected to the router.
The TC is a wireless backup device.. it does not need to be connected to the main router..
The problem is the computer.. not the TC.. the computer has only one wireless card.. if your current internet is by wireless.. then you must choose.. internet or backup.
But my other suggestion will work.. get a wireless USB stick compatible with Mac OS.. there are plenty and cheap.. since you are in the same room as the TC they will work fine.. plug it in and load the driver.. taint hard.
You should do the first backup by ethernet though.. wireless is too slow.. once you have that, you will do fine.
Search ebay for wireless n usb.. Mac compatible..
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-EDUP-Mini-Wireless-11N-300M-USB-LAN-Card-WiFi-Adapte r-Nano-Card-Soft-AP-/150864362939?pt=US_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item2320 377dbb#ht_3553wt_1165
As you can see.. they are getting smaller and neater.
I have no idea if it works .. haven't tried one.. but I have used USB wireless stick on the Mac to overcome this issue.
You will need to set static IP .. not hard but you need to set specifics if you do buy one post again for the setup.

Trying to connect my new Apple TV to the wireless network. When I try to use the remote the Apple Tv doesn't respond ( doesn't go to the next screen). Could this be caused by a weak wireless signal?

It is not properly connected to the network.
Make sure location is set correctly
DNS should be on auto (settings - general - network)
    Try ethernet
Signal strength on device won't account for issues, you would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks
