Is this a hard-drive sound...impending doom?!

For those who know what they're listening to, what is this sound?
http://enete.org/drumstuff/buzzing.mp3
Is it the sound of a hard drive going bad? It only happens when I change the orientation of the computer (tilt it).
G4Dual1.25MDD, PowerMac8600/498mHzG3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   3 years old

I just had mine replaced at an Apple service centre, cost approximately 140 USD.
Once installed, I realised that my previous HDD had been working at its limits for a while. The new drive just makes the quiet clicking sound I remember from when I first got the PB, instead of having the fans going half the time and other little groans and rattles. The S.MA.R.T. status always showed up as verified, though.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Hard drive sounds like it's about to take flight...won't boot at all.

Got one for ya. I just updated my G4 to 10.4.7 and now when I boot:
    1) Button lights up
    2) Hard drive sounds like a teen driving a Ferrari to prom in first gear.
    - that's it. No screen, mouse, keyboard, start-up noise ( I so miss that wonderful "BONG!" noise, now. ) Nothing.
I am old-school PC newB by MAC so be patient w/me.
PS. how do you open the optical drive with no power to the keyboard?

  • Why won't Time Machine back up onto this external hard drive?

I re-formatted a SimpleTech 320gb hard drive so it would erase the music and videos on it and format it for use with Time Machine. I thought it all went smoothly but then the initial back up which is about 91gb stops after it backs up about 22gb and says an error occured. No matter how many times I restart everything and try to back up more, it doesn't work. I've even tried using disk utility to erase it and that didn't work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

First, deselect the drive as your TM backup drive, then turn off TM. Now try this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Be sure to re-select the drive for the TM backup drive.

  • I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

One thing to bear in mind, if you are using Time Machine on your Time Capsule and have it set so the TM backup includes your external drive, you will effectively be backing up your Aperture library twice on the same drive, once with Time Machine and once with the vault. This isn't a problem unless you start to run out of space.
Another thing to note, vaults on network drives used to be flaky (i.e. not really supported) and required workarounds to be able to use them. I'm not sure if this has changed, but I just managed to create a vault on my TC ok.

  • I have a 2007 Macbookpro and it started up with gray checkered boxes ann across the screen I tried to re load OSX and it work 1 day and started again is this a hard drive problem or Video?  Now as it starts to load a screen comes up saying to restart

I have a 2007 Macbookpro and it started up with gray checkered boxes and across the screen I tried to re load OSX and it work 1 day and started again is this a hard drive problem or Video?  Now as it starts to load a screen comes up saying to restart over and over again

    I'd suspect this known issue:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
if you have a late 2007 MBP.
The only testing you can do at home is to attach an external monitor and see if the defects repeat on the external. If so, get to an Apple store. If the computer's video chipset fails a test the Apple Store will perform, you get a free logic board replacement. Turnaround is usually one day to one week--not bad at all.
If the defects do NOT repeat on an external monitor, then the problem is not covered by the above Repair Extension Program
The issue is heat-triggered. Be certain that you control heat once you get it fixed. Don't use the computer in your lap without a lapboard; don't block the vents under the display hinge; don't us in clamshell mode, etc.

my macbook 15 inch wont turn on, it makes the hard drive sound and then a few seconds later it sounds like its powering down with like a clicking noise

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If neither helped, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utillity. The startup disk may need repairing.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
    Make sure it says: Verified

  • Upgraded to 10.4 - now my external hard drive sounds like a blender.

    Hi -
I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have a new LaCie external drive that I keep all my important files on. One of the reasons I bought this drive was because it's extremely quiet and shuts itself down after a few minutes not in use. I just upgraded to 10.4 last night and when I came in this morning, the hard drive now sounds like a kitchen disposal with a spoon stuck in it -- an obnoxious loud clanking comes from it at all times whether it computer is accessing it or not. Anyone know how to fix this or even hear of ths issue? It's extremely annoying.

Actually, it seems to have stopped now completely and is working fine. Weird. I was exagerrating about bit with the blender remark, but it's a new drive so I can't imagine it would fail that suddenly, especially with the change of OS.

  • Can I replace the hard drive in my HP HDX16-1140US with this hybrid hard drive?

Hi. I ran the SMART test on my hard drive (500 GB) and it said that it was about to fail soon. I would like to replace my hard drive with this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-Solid-Hybrid-ST95005620AS/dp/B003NSBF32
Is this possible? What are some other hard drives to consider?
    This question was solved.

Alright, here's what I've decided to do. I'll buy the Western Digital Scorpio Black but get the 500 GB version. Then, I'll buy an external hard drive because I know that the HDX16 in general can support two drives but I don't think my particular model has the second drive bay. Also, I think it would be cheaper too and that way I don't have to buy another drive that is the same size as my primary drive. How does that sound?

  • Odd La Cie External Hard Drive Sound

    Hi everyone.
I got a load of Apple stuff ranging from 1985-1996 yesterday and included was an external LaCie hard drive.
I plugged her in and noticed a really, really odd sound. I've never heard of HDD make a sound like this before, and couldn't find a similar sound on all of the "hard drive failure sounds" websites.
The hard drive itself is an IBM DORS-32160 from 1996. Below is a link to a youtube video with the hard drive producing the odd sound. I believe it repeats 3 times before I stop recording.
    youtube.com/watch?v=Plbo5SJl5Go
You will need to turn your speakers up.
I assume its means the HDD is toast, but does anyone have any idea what this means? Like, what the problem is or if you have heard it before?
    Thanks a bunch.

DiskWarrior will only repair HFS and HFS+ file systems. You need a utility that repairs the FAT file system. You might try hooking the drive up to a Windows box then try to repair it with a Windows disk utility.

  • Satellite A300 - Hard drive sound

    Hi everyone,
Just got a Satellite A300 out of the box and I was surprise that I can hear the hard drive spin. Is this normal ? My old machine didn't have this constant sort of hushing sound.....
    Thanks for any reply

    Hello Lodnar
I really do not know what you want to read here. Either contact your local dealer or nearest authorized service provider and clarify this. Any kind of discussion here will not help much. Do not waste your time and clarify this as soon as possible.

  • Strange hard drive sounds

Whenever I open my macbook the hard drive seems to make a "re-adjusting" noise. It hasn't been acting strangely or erratically, the noise is just a bit unnerving. ANy ideas on what it could be?

Take a look at this article from Apple, specifically the first option "Waking the computer from sleep."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1723
Are any of those sounds the same as what you're hearing?

  • Grinding Hard Drive Sound

Almost every time I start my new MBP, there is a grinding/clicking sound coming from the bottom right side of the palmrest, which I assume is where the hard drive is located. This seems abnormal. Also, when I raise and lower the computer in the air when carrying it around, I can hear a whizzing sound coming from the same location. Never heard this before in any of my computers. Anyone else having this experience? For the record, I have a 250gb 7200rpm hard drive.
    Thanks!

If that sound is from the Superdrive, then its normal.
Maybe you can post a video on youtube? Its hard to judge right now.

  • Weird Slicing Hard Drive sounds. Freezes up! I need help!

I have a G4 AGP Graphics Power Mac, and there is a 30 GB Maxtor Hard Drive in it right now. I was having problems when my computer would sit and be doing nothing then suddenly the hard drive would make these weird slicing like sounds in 30sec-1min intervals, very sharp and high pitch, then would freeze with the waiting cursor just spiraling. So I figured out that if you turned off the "Put Hard Drives to Sleep" feature off it stopped doing it. Then now all of a sudden it's doing it again with the feature still turned off. Also, I think this may be related; Whenever I manually put it to sleep it gets to the point where the monitor turns off but the computer just sits there and doesn't got to sleep. It will automatically go to sleep just fine. What's wrong with my computer? Please help! Thanks!

Hello Again! High pitched sounds are most often either the hard drive (bad) or a fan making the noise. You can usually open it up and figure out which is causing the noise. If it's the hard drive you'll have to replace it and the sooner the better. Tom
