Is this a legitimate Apple number?  1-800-680-4131.

I'm getting a pop-up notice that says "Safari Alert" from www.macsystemalerts.com to the effect that I have "security issues" and "suspicious activity might have been detected" and to call 1-800-680-4131 immediately.  Is this a real Apple number?  I've never gotten anything like that from Apple before and it sounds fishy to me.  Anyone know anything about this?

PastorL5's solution below worked for me except I didn't have to restart Safari. While Safari was open, I held down the command key while pressing the W key a bunch of times. That got rid of the     Major security Issue call 800-680-4131 box     and I was able to use Safari as normal again. The problem originally occurred when I tried to watch a live tv show for free online and downloaded what appeared to be MPlayerX.dmg, but I think it was just a virus. Before I tried this solution, I had put that dmg in the trash. I don't know if I also need to remove other files from my ard drive. Does anyone else know?

Kellen, when as Safari was opening I held down Command and repeatedly hit the "W" key to close all the windows Safari had opened and it fixed it right up!

safari may be hacked,,,,would not open and the number 1-800-680-4131,,would fix my problem for $250.00.......does apple know about this and are they doing anything about it?

Yes, those are symptoms that Safari was hacked. It probably happened because you accidentally clicked on an ad or something that triggered it. You should definitely not pay the money to fix it.
The good news is that it probably only affects your web browser and not the entire computer.
Apple does already have several settings in the Safari Preferences that try to prevent hacks. But they can't prevent everything. It is especially difficult for a company to prevent "social engineering" hacks like "phishing" where users are tricked into clicking on things, because the hack is introduced by something outside the computer (the user that's been tricked).
Here are a couple of links I found about this type of problem. Note: I do not know how good these sources are, but because they do offer similar solutions they sound legitimate. In short, you can just reset Safari, and if it doesn't let you do that you can force Safari to quit and the reset it.

You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

The only way an iOS device can be tracked is if you setup Find My in Settings > iCloud before it disappeared...then you have to login to your iCloud account, click Find My Phone, and see if the device shows up.  It will only show up if it is turned on and connected to the internet.
There is no other way to track or locate a device.

  • Is this a legitimate way to get FCP 5.1 cheaply?

Ok, so I'm looking into prices for FCP Suite. I know what the retail is and I've found cheaper pricing from alternate retailers. There is one deal I've come across that seems to good to be true (so it probably is). Here's the specifics:
    - You get a "Final Cut Pro 2.0 Genuine Apple OEM CD with Serial Number"
    - You also get a "Final Cut 5.1 Studio Upgrade Retail box (MA286Z/A )"
    - Price: $899
The retailer also sells the 5.1 upgrade for $649. I know the retail for that item is $699. So, they're basically charging $250 for FCP 2.
Is this legitimate? Any worries that the FCP 2 serial number is bogus? There's no mention of anything being an academic edition, so I'm just wondering where the gotcha might be. I did see this note in Apple's store regarding the 5.1 upgrade:
"*Academic and not-for-resale versions of Final Cut Pro 1, 2, or 3 are not eligible for this upgrade."
I wonder if the OEM FCP 2 included in the deal is part of the excluded versions.
    Jeff

Thanks for the reply JC. Of course I will ascertain the legitimacy of the online retailer, that's not really my question. I mentioned the possibility of a bogus FCP 2 serial # as only one issue and was asking that more of a general question of have people seen bogus sales of older editions of FCP as a way to get 5.1 cheaper.
The other major issue was the OEM description of the FCP 2 CD and whether it falls under the "not-for-resale versions" exception of the FCP 5.1 upgrade. Again I'm assuming that the retailer, legitimate or not, will claim that it's perfectly fine. So, I was asking for anyone who may have had personal experience with that here.
    Jeff

  • My tech person on campus wants to know the apple number of the apple tv so he can directly hook the internet into the apple tv without a password. I can't seem to find anything but the serial number on the box or on the tv? Does anyone know where it is?

I bought apple tv thinkng it would save me from my college life of not being able to have cable but it has cost more of a problem Be
ause my campus is so large we have passwords to log into our network. When I called the tech people they siad if i had the apple number they would be able to connect it to the network without a password. I tought this was the source of my problem because i can not connect to the server because it is not loging in to my apple id and password that is my itunes account. I have checked it multiple times and thats not the problem. The other problem is I can not find the apple number the tech was describing to connect it to the network. Does anyone know the answers to my problems? Im a college student in dire need of tv!

    Hi,
I imagine he means "encrypted wireless.
I'm a little confused about what the IT guy wants. If your campus has a wireless network and others with laptops etc can connect to it them you should also be able to with the Apple TV. It seems to me that the campus IT guy needs to give you the name of the wireless network (SSID) and a  password so you can connect.
Then go to Apple TV General/Network/Configure Wi-fi and follow instructions. The IT person should tell you what encryption they use WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc. Probably WPA2. You'll need this infor to connect.
    Then go to
Apple TV General/Network/Configure TCP/IP and you will probably tell it to use DHCP and it should connect you to the campus network.
After that you can sign into the iTunes store etc.
Or am I missing something here?
    Pat.
