Is this effect done in Flash

Take a look at the first couple of frames in the following video. Elements in the images seem to be standing apart from each other, rather than flat,
as they would be in a normal photograph (the people in the crowd scene, for example). You often see this effect used on old black and white images in presentations or documentaries on the History channel. In some WW One documentaries, you'll see soldiers going over the top of a trench and the men closest to the camera appear to be on a different plane than those further into the field.
I'd like to know how this effect is accomplished, and if it's done in Flash or Photoshop. Are there any tutorials available on creating this effect?

the animation is done in flash but the editing of one image into several images, each containing different image planes, is done in a photo editor like photoship.

If you want to end up wanting to kill yourself, just try doing that in Illustrator. That was probably done using a program that has more than Illustrator’s pathetic 3D effects. The biggest problem you will have is that Illustrator can only model one object at a time. You can extrude an outline of Florida and be happy with the result, but once you try using different extrude height for different states you will see the problem.
Illustrator cannot model a “scene”, meaning all objects exist within one 3D universe with the same lighting, perspective, and vanishing points. Painstaking trial and error will be needed to get each state to look correct in relation to all the other states. Also, Illustrator extrudes from the centre out, so suing different extrude heights will mean the bottoms of each state are not aligned to the same surface. Fixing that will also take a lot of trial and error. best of all, once the bases of the states are nice and aligned, the perspective consistency will be off because you had to move everything.
Conclusion: If this was done in Illustrator, it was not done using and 3D effects. It was done using talent and experience.

You mean using data from the server? Flash, and Flex, run
client side, but
can pull data from a server - and make a graph. I don't know
Flex, but it
wouldn't be too hard in Flash. AS3 is better for outputting
as a JPEG, but
it can be done in AS2 as well.
There are many tutorials for loading data into Flash, just
Google things
like 'Flash XML' or 'Flash Database'. I'd also recommend
looking at AMFPHP

alternative to Flash remoting that makes calling
server-side functions, and passing data, a snap.

Nice alpha text reveal. How is this effect done?

How is this done? I'm guessing a liberal use of Trapcode form, but how is the text revealed? I'm thining maybe an alpha matte but is there an easy way of doing this type of effect.

I know in the video it implies he uses a light control thing but I think he is really just animating the cartoon. I just want to animate a "line cartoon" like this one. Can I do this in flash? Its not for a website just like a movie type thing. I have access to pretty much all the other adobe software at my school so if I need to use a different program I can do that. open flash and you'll see a timeline with frames (that are all empty when you start). draw something on the stage. that will be in frame 1. right click on frame 10 and click insert keyframe. your drawing will be in frame 10 now. double click your drawing to select all of it, move your mouse off and then over the select drawing and then drag it to the right and release. right click between frame 1 and frame 10 and click motion tween. test your movie.
now start playing with flash to see what you can do. you're not going to learn how to create your animation by asking questions.
you can get help getting started but you now have enough info to get started. you can get more help if and when you encounter problems.

Parent the layers to a Null, spread them out in a circle. Rotate the Null. Set the auto-orient of the layers to always face the camera.

convert text to movie clip or graphic, set motion tween from
one place to another and

SO i know in after effect i can make this but i dont have the
program and this is for a flash intro...
Lets say I have a ball in motion and I was a line trailing
behind it like a ball has been kick and it is flying
through the air how can i make the swoosh look llike it is
following the ball without using a wipe filter, because i tired
a wipe filter and it wipe part of the "swoosh" where it is
not wanted...??? Let me know if this makes since and is there

I am a Crime Scene Detective and I am looking for new ways of
presenting sketches and photos to juries and superiors. I saw a
demo of a floor plan with numbers on it. When the person either
moused over or clicked on a number it would disply info and a photo
that the number was corresponding to. It was very impresssive. Can
this be done in Falsh? If not what software can do this and what is
the learning curve to do this? Thanks

That sort of interactivity can be done in Flash; the learning
curve is steep.
It can also be done in basic (x)html, css and JavaScript;
also a steepish learning curve.
If you are not a designer or developer it may take you some
time to work out the best way to build such an application, not to
mention the software and testing that you would need to use and
undertake. It may be better to ask a designer to build something
for you. You could try your IT department for a lead or even ask on
this forum for someones help in building such a thing. To a
developer it would be fairly easy given your rough outline
description of the functionality.

I'll go down your list one by one.
1. Access mail - which I know that the iPad can do.
Enough said.
2. Save an excel or word or ppt of PDF attachment for review.
You can view these types of documents natively on the iPad as Tgara has mentioned.
3. Open an review and maybe change a excel or word file.
There are many apps that allow this. I personally prefer Apples iWork programs, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. They tightly integrate with iCloud.
4. Resave such above files.
With Pages, Number, Keynote you can save/resave files in iCloud and locally. Also you could use dropbox to save your files on dropbox and provide a way for you to share a folder with coworkers/family and they can add/view/review files from there and you can see the changes on your device.
5. Reply to a mail attaching a file.
This is possible in many ways. From dropbox, or another app you can email files with the share button.
6. Be able to rename files and store them in specific folders.
This goes back to dropbox/iCloud. iOS doesn't really have a traditional file system. If you save a PDF it isn't saved anywhere you can just open it. You would have to open an app that supports view PDFs and select the PDF you wish to view. The same goes for documents, spreadsheets and etc.

As far as I know it's not possible to set a percentage within Flash for the
height or width of the Stage.
It is possible however, to set the Publish Settings to a percentage or pixel
value, so that the Stage will be rendered in the Browser at this size.
It's common practice to use an alternative to Publish Settings, such as
UFO.js or SWFObject.js, these allow you to set Flashvar parameters.
Generally you make your Stage the maximum size you need, and set your width,
height properties to 100% within your html wrapper with no-scaling and align
it top-left.
Then whatever the size of the user's browser it will render full size.
All none visual assets are off stage, until an arrow is pressed.
Depending on which is pressed, the off stage assets are tweened on stage
whilst tweening the on stage assets off stage.

It comes with effort and patience! This effect is simple...
tweening... give it a go and see what you can achieve through trial
and error, you will get far more out of it than copying someones
walkthrough.
