Is this hardware or software issue

Hello
i bought my macbook pro 2 months ago, it was all okay and i was more than satisfied with its performance. 3 days ago, i was working on my macbook and i was using alot of applications, suddenly, mac freezes, i thought that was just 1 time thing, after that it started to freeze a lot, the screen either go to blue color, freeze, or some pixels shows and some n't. i re-installed mac os x snow leopard, while installing i got the same problem many times, finally i made it and re-installed lion again. but the same problem is still there, i have windows installed using bootcamp, and the problem is there also. sometimes everything freeze, but sometimes music still playing.
this is very depressing for me, im like 90% sure that this is a hardware problem, it's still new to send it to support. im still hoping that this is a software issue
anyone had this issue before? those are some links to the problem

If you haven't already done so, run Software Update to see whether there's a firmware update for your model. Failing that, call AppleCare.

  • HT3798 Ipod classic, 120gb randomly freezes and/or reboots. Is this hardware or software issue?

My wife told me the other day that she was having an issue with her ipod which was happening at an increasing rate. While listening to an audio book or music it will randomly stop/freeze, and times the Ipod will reboot. Of course, when listening to a 6 hour audio book and losing your place when this happens can be frustrating. It's about 4 years old and I was thinking that maybe it was the drive inside, but not sure.

  • Lion 10.7 Only Boots in Safe Mode. Is This a Hardware or Software Issue?

Hi. On my iMac late 2009 i7 8GB bought last March only. I reinstalled Lion (I didn't erase the whole disk because I have Boot Camp Windows and I have filed there) and it can only boot in safe mode if I use the Mac's built-in EFI bootloader (where you have to press option on restart) menu then press shift after choosing the iMac OS X hardisk. I've been trying to fix it for around 4 days now today. I'm tempted to take it to the authorized Mac shop but that could take weeks to months in our country. If I let it boot normally, it would seem to have a kernel panic and would stop at the white/gray screen. Verbose mode showed that is stopped at something 10 of these like: nstat fail.
Is this a GPU hardware problem, specifically the 3D element of this 4850M GPU? I'd like to do load each kext, each extension manually but I can't find them in Lion. When I use the Lion DVD or the Lion Recovery partition, it's very sluggish, every click and process takes 20 seconds to minutes. If I try to boot in Linux, Snow Leopard DVD or Snow Leopard external hardisk, there seems to be a kernel panic. It's either just a black screen or a garbled screen.
I want to erase/format the iMac's hardisk but in Safe Mode, it can't be mounted even if I use Disk Utility. If only there's a way to force it to mount, I can save some Windows 7 file to one of my external hardisk or flash drive. Does anyone know of an app or program that can mount NTFS files on Lion's Safe mode?
If it's a Lion bug, has Lion somehow corrupted the Mac's built-in (hardware not the EFI partition in the hardisk) EFI or somehow corrupted the Mac or GPU's ROM? Could it be a new OS X virus? Should I then perform in Safe Mode to flash the GPU ROM and the Mac's ROM again (I have the latest)?
Do you think if I erased the whole drive, reinstalled it again with either Snow Leopard (assuming it doesn't boot into a garbled screen) or Lion things will go back to normal?
Has anyone experienced something like this? What was the culprit (was it a hardware or software issue) and what was the solution?
    Gbu.

Hi thanks for all the concern and replies. I've tried all that.
I had just got it back from the shop last Friday. It was there for around two weeks. It was a faulty GPU (when you see garbled display that's consisten when booting it the GPU). I have a strong feeling it's related to the Lion install 10.7 or 10.7.1 and may be similar to reports of Mac laptops overheating. It's good the GPU is removable, it might have taken 3 week or a month if it had been the whole board.
It's a blessing in disguise though as with all or most cases because I also got to have the LCD replaced for excessive backlight bleeding (in my opinion), the dead pixel from the previous LCD isn't there anymore (though under the glass there're some smudges but nothing crucial). The backlight bleeding is still the same though in my opinion but at least it's new.
It's a great thing I bought Applecare. I didn't buy it for the iPhone because that's more durable (my iPhone 3G's 3 years old now and it's still solid. Although there are scratches and a crack at the back at the bottom, got sqeezed under the table I think when I sat). I think Applecare is a good recommend for things that get hot like desktop and laptop Macs(are the iOS considered Macs btw?) which are twice or thrice the price of iOS devices.

  • My IPhone 6 with AT&T is dropping 5-10 calls a day. Calling from same location as my 5S which never had dropped calls. Is this a hardware or software issue?

My IPhone 6 128GB with current software using AT&T is dropping 5-10 calls a day. I am calling from an office with good signal strength and in the same location as i did with my 5S which almost never had dropped calls. Is this a hardware or software issue? Is this a common issue with the new IPhones?

    Hi jackneedshelp,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If calls are not going through on your iPhone 6, I recommend going through the troubleshooting method found at this link:

  • RSAP (Hardware or Software issue ?) Apple Eng. please feedback on this ...

    Dear iPhone users,
One of the things who is holding me back on buying an iPhone is the lack of support for rSAP. My car has it to provide phone integration but as far as I know iPhone doesnt support it.
Is rSAP support a hardware or software issue ? Has the iPhone the capabilities to enable rSAP in the future ?
    I dont want to buy a WM6 phone ! HELP !
    Best regards

It software. Apple will enable it if and when they want to.
Aside from that, there is no information.

Please help. My ipone 4 is just out of warranty. was working fine with 4.33. once upgraded to ios 5 . it slowed to 4-5 secs. I did a reset and restore it becomes worse.
Now phone is alomost useless , kind of disappointing coming from an expensive apple phone. So is it  hardware or software issues ??

At this point, it's hard to say, but I'm not inclined to think hardware.
Have you tried a SMC reset?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
This might be relevant for the Mac not going to sleep.
Have you verified the disk and repaired if necessary?
Have you tried resetting the PRAM?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
You might also try the steps in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
My recollection--which may or may not be right--is that repairing the disk may cure the spotlighting problem. The other steps I mentioned are just general things that are often done when troubleshooting.
Try repairing the hard drive, and post back if that doesn't cure the problem.
    Good luck!

  • Strange Drive Behavior - Hardware or Software issue?

Our xServe has three drive bays. Bay 1 is the system drive, 2 is our file data and drive, 3 is has an empty 250 drive.
Over the network, users can access the file data, however when I attempt to open the hard drive at the server (by clicking on the icon) the window opens but it does not display all the contents. I get a spinning beach ball and am forced to relaunch the Finder. The same thing occurs with attached FW drives.
Disk Utility and Disk Warrior show the drives to be fine (although I'm not sure I completely trust the reports).
As a hardware test I swapped the data drive to bay 3 and the blank drive to bay 2. Clicking the bay 3 icon seemed to work initially until I tried to open bay 2 and got the spinning beach ball.
I have repaired permissions on all the drives.
It is not clear to me if it is a hardware or software issue. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this would be a great help.

Thanks for the reply, Camelot. This is a weird one.
I don't know the exact number of files, but it only totals 84gb out of the 120gb available. The amount of data hasn't significantly changed recently and this problem is a recent one.
I have let the beachball spin for several minutes and it doesn't resolve itself. I am afraid to let it go for much longer because I fear the data will get corrupted. Because of the external firewire drive issue as well, I don't have a recent back up .
I have backed up the data in its current state to other networked computers and am doing a random test of the files to see if there has been any corruption, but with so many files it is hard to say.
The whole thing makes me nervous, to say the least. I have years of troubleshooting desktop macs but the Xserve seems like a different beast so I'm wary of doing the usual types of troubleshooting. Guess it is time to call in the pros!
    Thanks again for your help.

My iPhone 4s will not charge in car or truck. It would appear after research that this is a software issue with ios5. Will there ever be a patch to correct this infuriating problem?!!!

Mine charges just fine, as does everyone's iPhone 4S that I know. Apple even sells a number of car chargers that are certified to work:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/iphone_accessories/car_audio
Perhaps there is a problem with your charger or the outlet you're using in your car/truck.

  • After upgrading to snow leopard my charger works intermittently, could this be a software issue or just a coincidence

After upgrading to snow leopard my charger works intermittently, could this be a software issue or just a coincidence

Very likely this is a coincidence. Have you tried resetting your System Management Controller? That would be the best first step for any issue that has to do with power.
    Best of luck.

  • Hardware Or Software Issue? (Technical)

Hey this is for the techies out there. My iPhone is some having weird issue remembering the IP assigned in DCHP mode. The signal is still strong (confirmed on my router's status page), but my wifi drops and the DCHP info dissapears randomly. It comes and goes sometimes frequently sometimes it'll stick for hours. If I renew the lease it goes back to normal. For now I've switched to static and reserved an IP for my phone, it seems to work fine. Why doesn't DCHP work though? It seems fine with my other devices. Is this a known software issue with iOS4, or is there some kind of logic controller that handles this, which may be faulty?
Thanks, the phone is awesome other than this btw.

  • IPhone 5 Hardware or Software issue?

My iPhone 5 is just under a year old. Just recently I noticed that when I put the phone in silent/vibrate mode and then switch it back it doesn't revert back to normal.
I am thinking the swith may not be working properly but I can turn it off and turn it back on and it works properly.
I can't trace it back to the most recent software upgrade but it is possible that is the culprit.
Is ths a hardware or software issue?

If a reset and then if required a restore do not fix it likely a hardware issue

  • Lost 6GB: hardware or software issue?

    Hi all.
I own the Compaq NC4400 and it's been the best laptop I've ever used: never failed or crashed, sturdy and completely reliable.  I run XP SP3 on it.  I always have AVAST running in the background and last week carried out a defrag using JkDefrag.
The internal hard drive is the standard unpartitioned 160GB Hitachi NTFS (149GB real space).  I've been running really low on space for a few months now, always fluctuating between 1-2GB free space.  When it goes under 1GB I just delete some old music or video files.  I know that sounds pretty extreme, especially as I normally advise less computer-literate friends to always ensure they have 10% free HD space, but the laptop and the operating system continue to run smoothly, so I've let my own laziness get in the way of procuring an external HD and backing up the internal data.
Now something odd has occurred: my free space shows as 7.5GB.  As I keep an eye on this figure quite regularly this happened only in the last couple of days.  It's almost impossible to check what 6GB might have gone missing, as I've got tons of media files all scattered in different folders.
Any ideas what might have caused this, or how to explain it?  And how to find out what might have gone missing (if anything)?  Normally when the Operating System recognises there is too little free space (say below 500MB) it will show a message saying something like "not enough disk space, delete some files in order to ensure efficient operating performance".  I haven't seen this message tho'...
Perhaps this is a software issue?  Perhaps some internal Windows software has decided on its own to clean up the drive (doesn't sound likely as I see no evidence of this).
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi:
You got me. I don't know of any time when these programs run automatically.
The C:\swsetup\SP38529 is part of your audio driver setup file.
I've never tried to find log files before. I know you can get info out of Windows 7 and Vista regarding some actions, but I don't know about XP.
And yes, when an old file is compressed, it needs to be uncompressed in order for it to work. Compressed files appear in blue in XP.
I always keep that box unchecked.
Actually, I went into the registry and deleted that option to compress old files, and disk cleanup executes in seconds since it doesn't waste time figuring out what files to compress based on how old they are.
That option (compress old files) no longer is available in Windows Vista or 7. Probably was a good thing to have in the old days when we had 2 GB hard drives and thought how huge that was!
Time for you to free up some drive space. You shouldn't normally run with more than 75% of the disk full. You lose performance.

  • IPod problem - does this sound like a hardware or software issue?

My iPod (80/video) sometimes plays but without sound. In other words, the time counter progresses, but there is no volume. It is very intermittent, but annoying nonetheless, because I need to restart the ipod to get sound again.
I've had it back to Apple twice, and they were not able to reproduce the problem.
Now, after spending a lot more time playing with it, I know how to reproduce the problem.
    This is when it happens:
    1. Pause iPod
    2. Remove headphones
    3. Let ipod turn off by itself
    4. Reinsert headphones / play ipod
When I turn it back on again, there is no sound from the headphones and I need to restart it.
So, the normal scenario is that I get to work, pause my ipod, remove the headphones and plug them into my laptop, letting the ipod turn off by itself after a few mintues. When I go to leave again and plug my headphones back in.... no sound.
It happens with any music file or video file.
Now, if this is a software/firmware problem, then I will patiently work around it. But if it might be a hardware issue, then I will send it back again, especially now that I know how to reproduce the problem reliably.
Of course, I've restored the iPod many times and have tried it on different computers with many audio and video files. The problem persists.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    sam
    5G 80gb   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have the same problem (sort of). I used to think I was losing the sound output, until I notice that the iPod errouneously and randomly turned the volume down to zero. Since this occurs while I'm driving with the cassette adapter and plug-in power adapter in use, nothing is touching the face of the iPod.
Now for the bad part. It is now starting to go the other way. I'll be happily listening to the iPod when it suddenly pegs to 100% volume. Sometimes it jumps around - up, down and then to zero.
I sent my 5th gen 60 gig iPod in for servicing. I got it back yesterday with no repairs and it has already started pegging at 100%. If this isn't a problem with the iPod (according to Apple) then there is a MAJOR software bug that needs to be addressed. I don't like getting "shined on" by Apple just because they didn't reproduce the problem during their half hour of troubleshooting.

  • My ipad 1 is suddenly tossing me out of apps, is this a hardware or software issue?

My Ipad was working fine until a few weeks ago, after ugrading to the newest IOS.  Lately about a third of the time I open a browser, (different browsers), or some other App like Netflix or Zappos, or even photo editing program, the app abruptly closes and throws me out to the desktop.  I'm getting very frustrated, does anyone else experience this and know why it might be happening?  Is it hardware or software?

Try closing all apps completely and then do a reset and see if that helps. To close all apps : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
To do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
