Is this how slow rendering is expected to be?

I'm using a MBP (mid 2010)
2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511)
Using FCP X  I decided to do a little test, because the performance in the project I'm working on is driving me nuts.
In my test project (1080i/29.97 fps), i have a 10 second clip of the Organic Generator, and a 10 second clip of the Centered Title (from the Build In/ Build out category) with the default text.  When I go hands of the keyboard, and the background rendering starts it's a full 10 minutes (give or take a few seconds) before the rendering is complete.
There is of course no other applications running (apart from the usual noise of the the various OS bits, that I can't really shut off)
Is this to be expected?  Perhaps there is some magic "go fast" option that is disabled by default, that I should turn on.  Is there some sort of diagnostic that I should run on my machine to make sure it's all OK?
Also I've heard that there may be some way to leverage other macs on my network -- to get them to do my bidding wrt rendering.  Is that true?

Earlier model MacBook Pros didn't have automatic graphics switching, unlike your model. This is what Mike is referring to.
My MacBook Pro (early 2009 Intel Core 2 Duo) has options for using the integrated graphics (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB) or the discrete graphics (NVIDIA GeForce 9600M 512 MB).
These are selected by choosing either "Better battery life" or "Higher performance" in the Energy Saver preference. Either option must be chosen manually, then the MacBook Pro has to be re-booted. See the following screenshot:

blame the developers for that, a bad tuned query will reduce your performance. Also you may blame the users for that, a lot of concurrent users running inefficient sql statements will strangle your system.

  • Adobe Photoshop cs4 - Really slow rendering ?

    Hello all,
I have recently started using Photoshop at home again as needed for a course assignment and i have noticed how slow the rendering has gone!
It takes approximately 4minutes to save a .TIFF or .PSD file now and/or even takes 1/2minutes in order to resize a layer?
I am not sure what the problem is, but it also does it on Photoshop CS5 in my college. Is it my files causing this error?
My mac in general has been looked after, and is in immaculate state, therefore i do not believe the hardware is causing the problem.
    Any help is deeply appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jesse @ pca.ac.uk

Im thinking it could be my harddrive, its a new one since.
    Could this be why?
    Chris Cox wrote:

I doubt it, I have dealt with larger files before and i had never had this problem!
    lack of RAM
Mines 4gb, if remember correctly. It's the latest Imac with dual core 500gb hd and was it 2gb?
Either way, my imac does not seem to be handling anything else at a slower rate, it is just photoshop. Bridge was working perfectly when i created a pdf for my presentation!
    slow disk
Is this my Hard drive you're talking about as mentioned above?
All the work is saved on my Seagate external/portable hard drive. And said before, i think i have been experiencing problems with it since using it? Is that possible. If so, it might actually explain my problems during college too.
bad utility software (antivirus keeps biting people on file IO), etc.
could you explain more about this? Any ways of making sure it was this being the problem? IO?
Oh, and in some cases it can be caused by third party plugins (FontAgentPro had a bug like that).
Since owning this version of photoshop, i havent actually had the need to download any plugins. because i also on a pc with cs3.

  • How slow is your broadband?

Ok so i recently moved house and im on day 10 of reactivation the last day! finally i get to complain tommorrow yay. My speed today and yesterday is a whooping 30 kbps which is simply not enough to view 60 % of pages i want to view on the net including some work stuff. How can Bt say they provide a fast reliable BB to everyone when this simply is not true. I was a very happy customer until i moved and i realise its not bts fault for my move but it is bt who are penalising me for living away from a city or town. I didnt even move that far away maybe 7 or 8 mile from my old house. ive been told my line speed wont improve much higher than 130 kbps when i download which to me is a joke im used to minimum of 800kbps for years now how is it possible that even people in india and other non wealthy countries have better line speed than me. This is britain ? and now im getting enraged reading about fibre optic broadband wtf my line is apparently a 1mb line dont you guys need to upgrade us little people first before you go onto some new superfast broadband??? so for the people who live round me (all 2896 of them) who use the net get to miss out on the fast bb ie anything above 2mb and i expect this will be the same for the fibre optic which we will never see up here my exchange is puriton feel free to check it out and see our options lol anyway sorry rant over just had to get others opinions on this. So how slow is ur Broadband and do you feel the same about the speed your getting?

Another folk living in the Countryside here not too far from Puriton at all  (Nether Stowey) .
Luckily I get the full 8128kbps sync but the problem still remains with no LLU. There are Villiages which are served by my exchange which only get around 1meg speeds.
But I don't think that BT will do anything about it because they don't see the point in investing for the Countryside.
The only thing people with slow connections can hope for is the new 2mb minimum law (If it does come out).

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

Look in your Applications folder.  If your system behaved as expected, you should have an iMovie 9.0 folder in your Applications folder.  Apple moved the old version there as even they suspected the new versions was a train wreck.

My iMac (late 2010 model) desktop's hard drive is fried (was about 200GB). How much am I expecting to pay for a new one and retrieve my information?

As you can see Erin, trying to recover information from a hosed drive can be very expensive.
I would suggest first the OWC site as well. You can get a new drive of choice in size there.
I would also get the voyager  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VOYQHDB1.0T/
    and..
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Prosoft%20Engineering/DGDR3BUN/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT11/
Wth your lap top and these folllowing tools your are set to change out the drive, reload OS and then with
the voyager pop in the old iMac drive and with the Prosoft software, try to mount and recover the files. Data Rescue is very good at this " if " the drive is not totally mechanically hosed. Drive Genius is very good at a number of things too. Nothing replaces the old adage of Back Up Back up Back up.
The voyage I listed can become the new backup drive for you.. your choice of tools: Time Machine or by cloning via CarbonCopyCloner or by what I use SuperDuper! IF you want to be really kewl.. both. By that I mean cloning and Time Machine.
It will take you an hour to swap out the drive and spring clean the iMac.. there is a hundred how too,s on you tube.
Hope this helps. Remember if is always when a drive will fail..they all do. I tell the people I support that Harddrives are good for 15 min.. to when they don't work. They will all fail.
Apple Geniuses are very limited to what they can and will do as far as file recovery.
Your best bet is to try to do it your self first. There is lots of help out here and you are not the first.

  • Motion in FCPX - click lag, hanging, tortuously slow rendering

    Hello Colleagues,
I have 2 iMacs of different generations, both up-to-spec and up-to-date on OS, FCP, and Motion.
I am experiencing very poor performance when using Motion "generator" graphics: lag, hanging, slow renders, and sometimes even crashing.
I have verified folder permissions, verified fonts, eliminated all converted events/libraries from pre-10.1 - pretty much everything except uninstalling, trashing prefs, and reinstalling fresh.
Still, FCP seems to be FIGHTING ITSELF, with iStat showing that more than half of CPU effort is being used by "system" instead of "user" at any given moment (when Motion assets are present and enabled).
The performance is far poorer than it ever was on FCP7 with Motion 4, and it is far worse than FCP10.0.x with Motion 5 (one of my machines was previously used with FCP7, however, the newer one has been FCPX since its unboxing day in early 2013).
Does anyone have any suggestions for the next step in troubleshooting this problem?
    Thanks,
    Eric - CoralVision

Yay it's Luis and Russ! Hello colleagues!
Luis: I tink I posted a link to one of the troublesome assets for you, but I limped through the completion of that project by keeping the inspector closed. I still suffered lots o click-lag, spinny balls, and, at the end, an overnight render, but I got through. This was on a 90minute show choir concert that had about 12x 8 second lower 3rds, and about 3 minutes of full screen titles, rolls, and credits. All of the FCP generator assets were made by me from scratch in Motion5. The current post relates to a similar problem, but on a different machine with different assets. The current complaint is from my slightly older iMac (lower power than the new one but still quite capable when using the former versions of this software), and the generators came from Motion projects which were originally created in Motion4. So unless there is something wrong with my practice in using FCPX generators, something in common across the 4 or 5 projects where I have experienced similar problems, I think that a corrupt template is an unlikely explanation.
Russ: I run my systems stock - that is to say that the only 3rd party plugins I have installed are the Canon EOS and XF plugins I use for ingesting media. I don't have any plugins related to MoGraph, editing, rendering, or memory management. These are custom generators that I am creating, chasing the "template" functionality I used to enjoy between Motion and FCP7. So yes, user generated custom generators - and I have had similar problems with several batches of varying complexity and varying origin.
For now I will just have to adapt, observe, and troubleshoot. I have a sneaky feeling that I am doing something wrong in the way I am setting up the motion projects for publication, but I will surely announce it loudly if I learn anything new.
    Thanks for checking in, fellows!

  • Dropdown components are not rendering as expected in IE7 browser.

    Hi,
We have a select one choice component in our application of width:270px; height:26px and font-size of component is 12px; Dropdown is rendering as expected in all browsers but in IE7 height of the component is less than the height we have give in CSS. Height of the component got fixed to some default height what ever height we specify in CSS.
Is there any way we can fix this issue?

Assuming you are using ADF skinning. Try adding an exception for IE7 as documented in

  • DSL working poorly, is this what is to be expected?

I've had Verizon DSL internet for several years now.  As my family has added more computers and devices and started using the internet more, we have had more and more issues with our service.  If 3 or 4 of us are all using computers or some devices with wifi at once, especially if someone is streaming video, the router tends to freeze up and has to be reset (shut off and back on) before everything will work again.  Sometimes we've had to do this several times in a day.  Now I just got an Ipad Air at Christmas, and it likes to randomly drop my wifi connection.  My router is fine and the wifi isn't down, it just drops the connection and I have to connect again.  I don't think it is an issue with the Ipad, because I've spent time at other locations (including several days at my in-laws where they have internet through their cable provider), and I haven't had a problem like this anywhere outside of my own house.  Is there something I can do to fix this?  Is this the best I can expect out of DSL?  I'd love to switch to FIOS, but it isn't offered in my area.  I'm ready to switch to Comcast if this doesn't improve.

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon

Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?

  • How slow will lightroom be on my athlon xp 2500?

Seems my athlon xp 2500 lacks sse2 instructions so how slow is lightroom going to be on my system. Athlon xp 2500 1 gig of duell channel ram. I am an rsp user and hate to waste the free download....Bob

I've got an Athlon 2500+ and 1GB of memory. RSP is noticeably more responsive, but Lightroom is quite good for most things. As I drag sliders in Develop, the picture updates almost instantly. Switching Folders/Collections/Keywords can be a bit slow (2-4 seconds) but reasonably usable. Applying Keywords to hundreds of photos at a time only takes a second or two.
About the only thing that I find absolutely unbearable is editing the Country/State/City/Location information. For some reason, this is incredibly slow. Updating a couple hundred photos at a time can take several minutes. Thousand at a time can take more than an hour.

  • Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) on this page because this page contains renderable text

I have a pdf file, which was OCRed by some other software, I am not satisfied with its accuracy, and would like to run adobe acrobat to OCR it again.
But Adobe says "Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) on this page because this page contains renderable text" for each page of the file.
How can I do to re-OCR the file? Thanks!

    CtDave,
I am having a similar problem and tried your suggestion but I still get the same message. Any other thoughts or fixes? The difference in my file is I used to be able to edit the text in the PDF file. For the last few months I am no longer able to edit this file.

  • Ocr  error This page contains renderable text

First time caller, first time user: acrobat 8.0 pro, i purchased acrobat to begin to ocr a lot of pdf's i've made. this first one i've tried to ocr gave me the error message: Acrobat cannot ocr this page, This page contains renderable text. what does this mean and is there a workaround to allow the page to be ocr'd.
I'm not trying to turn it into a word document, I just want to have searchable text, so i believe i choose searchable image, english and 600 dpi, but no dice.
    Roxylee

I keep coming across this renderable text issue in documents I am processing for the web, and frankly, the TIFF work-around is not adequate. We pay a lot for Adobe Professional, and expect more than such a lame work-around which hinders the output quality. In addition, this is a tedious solution for large documents as well.
I have found several other posts on the web about this, with some references to Adobe updates fixing this problem. I have tried them all and none work. Very frustrating.

  • Slow Rendering

Is anyone else experiencing slow rendering since updating?  I am looking at my activity monitor and it's not hardly using any ram while rendering.  This is absolutely frustrating!

Unless you're dealing with large format still images rendering doesn't use RAM it uses the CPU and in some instances the GPU.
