Is this idle fan noise normal?

Hi everybody,
I just bought the new Mac Mini and I'm wondering if this fan noise at idle is normal:
http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=05993774904232412088
This m4a was recorded using the iPhone built-in utility and I put the phone near the exhaust rear side.
I don't know how to explain but it seems to "rattle", you can hear it in background using headphones.
Thanks.

Thanks. I gave this a shot, but i'm still getting the same temps. There's plenty of airflow around the laptop as it is on a stand which raises the back of the laptop. I also noticed, last night, that there was a faint, but audible whine that I never noticed before. Maybe I'm just being ultra paranoid now, but I like knowing that my hardware is functioning as intended. I'm fearful that the above-average idle temps are a precursor to an upcoming hardware failure.
I also have iStat Menus installed and i'm currently getting 2500-3183rpm. I currently only have 6 apps open (safari, adium, preview, mail, photoshop, and itunes). No flash movies loaded and one 6MB PSD file open in Photoshop. Activity Monitor currently shows the highest CPU percentage at 5.8 (safari).

  • Acer Aspire E 13 idle fan noise

Hi. I have just bought an Acer Aspire E13 (ES1-311-C46Y). I like the computer except one thing. The fan makes an hight pitched/ high frekvent idle fan noise. Is it suppose to do this when the computer is completly new?//Mattias Ipsonius

    matand30,
The fan should not be overly loud, it sounds like it might have an issue. I would recommend you contact the Acer technical support in your area and see what your options are.

  • Quad Idle Fan noise?

I own several powerbooks and recently bought my first PowerMac.
    The Powerbooks are silent.
The Quad makes fan noise. It's not very loud, but the fans are clearly running. I can feel cool air from the front vents. Normal?
I have installed a second internal drive (Hitachi) and 4 gigs of Crucial RAM.
The machine was silent until I loaded on Photoshop, FCP and several other programs. But I really haven't used any of the programs yet.
Since I have not done any serious work on the machine yet- so I am not sure if this normal idle noise or something else.
Should an idle Quad be fully silent?
    Thanks

My Quad is much noiser than I expected. My PowerBook can barely be heard. My iMac (since replaced by the Power Mac) was Rev. A and suffered from the known noise problems but was quieter than the Power Mac. Are these fan speeds typical? (Obtained from Marcel Bresink's Hardware Monitor utility.)

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" continuous idle fan noise

    Hello,
My MBP has recently started emitting a constant noise as if the fan is rubbing. Have a listen to the noise here: https://soundcloud.com/adam-wilkie/fan-noise-2/s-VnBbe
It sounds mechanical and is constant from startup to shutdown and is really really annoying. I can hear it most of the time and it is especially audible in a quite room.
I have taken it too the Genius bar twice and they have run their diagnostic tests (which said everything was ok) and have cleaned it out but the noise continues.
Has anyone else had this issue?
If anyone could offer me some advice that would be great!
    Thanks

Sigh, I guess I'll need to go to the store tomorrow to exchange it.
*****, because I don't have the keyboard/trackpad freezing issue and was able to install Windows 8.1 from USB using Boot Camp Assistant without any issues. Thought I got lucky until I found out about this issue.

  • 2013 AE.ac loud fan noise normal?

My new 2013 802.11ac Airport Extreme base station is constantly making a lot of noise due to the fan running, this is with an ambient temperature of 26C. The old 2012 802.11n has been happily working all summer with temperatures as high as 30C, never made a noise, never any problems.
    Is this normal behaviour?
    It's louder than a PC!

I would power it off when you go to bed and power it back on when you get up.
Then see how fast it heats up and if the fan turns on immediately and stays on or the box is cool only because the fan is running flat out.
In normal circumstances the fan should run very slowly and be close to inaudible.. for it to run flat out all the time I would suggest the unit is faulty and should be returned post haste under warranty replacement.
The previous version had external power supply and no fan.. a much better arrangement IMHO!!

  • Is this idle CPU temp normal?

I'm running an early 2008 2.4GHz Macbook (white). On idle, the CPU ranges between 61°C and 64°C. After a few minutes at around 80% load, i get around 86°C. Is this normal? According to this site,

users are getting about 20°C lower temps on idle. Any input?

  • Is an 'audible' constant fan noise normal?

I have browsed literally hundreds of similar questions and support pages related to this issue but none seem to relate directly to what I am experiencing.
I have very recently began hearing a very noticeable and constant noise from my MBP. It does look like the fan is the culprit but I have none of the symptoms. The fan speeds are always 1998-2000 rpm, temps are always 49-51 degrees, and absolutely no high intensity processes on the CPU ever.
Does anyone know what else might be the cause of this? Dirty fan blades? I am usually in very controlled and clean environments and have almost never used the MBP on any other surface than solid.
Also, could the noise be coming from the HDD? It is way too smooth to be coming from HDD but I am wondering if that is even a possibility.
Any advise or suggestions will be appreciated!
If I am unable to solve this within the next few days, I plan to take it in to Apple.

Well, yeah. I began noticing the sound only after the update.
I took it in to Genius Bar and they said it's working fine and offered to put it in extended diagnostics for 48 hours. Since I use this laptop for work, I'll have to go back there later but at this point as others have pointed out in this thread, I am thinking this is due to dirt buildup.
If I do get around to attempting to clean it, I will post an update on the outcome.

  • U840-10Q high fan noise in idle

    Hi,
about month ago I've bought Toshiba U840-10Q ultrabook. After day of useing, I've returned it for RMA, because of broken WiFi led. During the RMA I reported to Toshiba Service that in idle fan noise is unacceptably high. They ignored it and only changed the WiFi led. So what can I do with that unbearable fan noise?
I found some posts on this forum, where people complain on this ultrabook's fan noise. Well, the problem is that fan turns on when laptop is quite cool (about 45-50 degrees) and stay turned on even if the temperature drops down to about 40 degrees (in idle). So I think it's software issue, maybe BIOS issue. On the other hand maybe it's a hardware issue, related with fan. Because the main problem is buzzing fan noise, which is not acceptable in silent environment. For now I can't use this ultrabook, because of that noise.
I have the latest BIOS v1.60. Cooling vents are clean (they cleaned them in service).
Should I return it again to RMA? Or should I sell this ultrabook and never again buy a Toshiba?
    Regards

A noisy fan is usually a hardware issue.
Therefore if you are actually using canned air to keep the fan and vents clean from dust and grime, and you have a cooling pad and it is still noisy, then it is probably a dysfunctional fan.
Now you can send it back in if you have a warranty on it. If you don't you, could replace the fan yourself. If you choose to do this, there needs to be further discussion.
Let us know if you are using canned air: remember spray for only 2 to 3 sec at a time to prevent any harm to your hardware.
Noise from fans can come from the dust particals that get into the fan bearings.
These fans are so small that it does behoove us all who have laptops to take care of our hardware regularly to prevent damage.
Just so you understand, fans and overheating is true for any brand of laptop, not just Toshiba.
    I have been in this business for many years and have worked with every brand of computer known to man;
I will tell you in all my years I have only used Toshiba because of its reliability and stability.
I am not an employee of Toshiba either.
I am speaking from pure experience.
-I actually have my old Toshiba's (7-10 years old) still in use and working just fine.
    Hope this helps

  • Fan Noise- A Concern???

My G5 is about 4 months old. When I bought it in 10/05, I was amazed at very, very quite it is. I have now noticed in the past several weeks when the Mac is being used heavily the fan noise is incredibly loud compared to what it has been. This is my first Mac since moving from the "Twilight Zone of Gates", so I'm not sure if this increased fan noise is something to be worried about or not?? Any opinions, greatly appreciated.

    1. If the fan noise is the same as before when the computer is idling, then the extra noise must come from the extra revs and is possibly normal.
    2. Dust can make fans louder. You have to open it up and spray GENTLY some aerosol spray into the fans. You will be amazed what cloud you will see. How do you open it? Check the online manuals in the Support section [e.g. how to change fans, hard drive etc.].
    3. I opened the computer and let it run while open [how to do that is also described in the Support section]. It turned out that one of the three fans [the hard drive one] is just really noisy. Calling Apple, they claimed it on the logicboard and will replace it.

  • My 2008 Macbook Pro makes a loud fan noise.

    Hello -
I bought my 15" macbook pro back in October 2008. I was very happy with my purchase due to the machine's performance. But over the past year I have noticed an increase in the fan noise. It almost sounds like it's hitting against something at a very high speed, hense this irregular fan noise. The noise also increases drastically when I am working on Photoshop or InDesign. I also partitioned my hard-drive to hold windows so I can work on AutoCad.....noise increases also as I work on my machine.
Why is this happening? Could this loud fan noise damage any internal component to the machine? Should I bring it in to Apple immediately?
    Thank you!

Some of the applications that you mention are somewhat CPU intensive which creates heat and results in fan speed increase and hence additional noise (to state the obvious).  However if you are experiencing excessive noise when CPU loads are modest it could be that your fans are failing as all mechanical devices eventually will or you may have 'schmutz' inside that is the cause of the unwanted noise.
I suggest you open the MBP and see if there is any dust in the fans that may very well be affecting their performance.  After 4 years, this is not an uncommon situation and it could be the solution to the problem.
If not, then you may consider getting replacements from iFixit or Powerbook Medic and replace them your self.  It is not rocket science in this instance.  If you suffer from chronic fingerfumbilitis, then have the Apple store do it for you.
    Ciao.

  • Thinkpad T60 fan noise

    Hello
I own a Lenovo Thinkpad T60 laptop. Lately fan of my laptop started making a whirling sound. Its been only 2 years since i have purchased the laptop and now i am running with this horrible fan noise.
I want to replace the fan with a new one. So i have checked the hardware manual of Lenovo and found out that at some point i have to apply thermal great at a location of fan assembly at the time of installation.
What thermal grease i have to use for this. If i buy the fan assembly at Lenovo, will they send me the thermal grease also.
Also do i need to buy the same fan model as the existing one... If it so, where can i find the fan model in my system..
    Your responses are greatly appreciated.....

    Hello,
the simpliest  method is to use your 3years warranty and send it to depot.
The other way is to do a parts look-up on Lenovo support page, see link on top of this page.
Then your get the FRU number, search for it at Google, also for thermal grease like Arctic Silver.
The fan isn´t very expensive may be 30$ and it´s not difficult to deploy it. But you will loose warranty!!

  • Fan Noise? Is this normal?

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9081819/Default%20System%20Input%2020101204%201346.mp3

Whether it's normal or not depends entirely on what the computer is doing, how hot it is, and how fast the fan(s) was/were spinning when you made the recording. That sounds like normal high-speed fan operation to me, but we'd need much more information from you to make any really sound comments. Which MBP model do you have? What does iStat Pro report about your fan speed and CPU temp when the fan noise gets loud? What is your fan noise like at the default speed of 2000 RPM?

  • 2 years of this fan noise....check my temperature?

so i've been battling the dreaded imac g5 (first gen) fan noise for the entire 2 years I've had the computer now. one midplane (out of 3 now? 4?) almost fixed the problem, but it had other problems. For the past year I have just let it go as it was in a room with a noisy window air conditioner and a noisy PC. Now I've moved and am back in a quiet room and the noise is unbearable.
Took it back to the apple store but they said it wasn't noisy (and it seemed less noisy there, not near as much "whine", but that could have just been all the ambient noise as well - music, crowded store, etc)
but my real question here is what temp should the imac g5 (1.8ghz) run at? at idle my CPU usually sits at about 155, under load about 165-170. this is acceptable right?
maybe its just a sign to give up on this machine and be an early adopter with the new mac pros and get to deal with whatever engineering probs are there (had the cube before this, bought right when it came out, cracked case, flaky sensor, temp problems, etc) or learn my lesson and wait another 9 months or so
I'm also having USB problems, but Apple told me they couldn't replace it (logic board) because my headphone jack is broken and that part isn't under warranty even though the USB is. sigh

Hi Eric, you might get more help posting in the G5 forum. This forum is for the iMac Intel Core Duo.

  • MacBook 5,1 Fan Noise During Normal Operation

Recently, my MacBook 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM has started making loud fan noises. The fan speed is steady at around 2,000 RPM (I belive this is normal), and the CPU temperature is staying around 60 degress celcius (also normal, I believe). I have done an SMC reset, done some troubleshooting, Activity Monitor isn't showing anything abnormal, and I have not installed anything recently or been using the machine in any way I haven't in the three years I've owned it.
Is the fan broken in some way? Is the MacBook just aging? Should I take this issue to a Genius Bar?

A lot of people have the same problem with the iX core macs. You can try Fan Control to gain manual override of the fan speed, if it bothers you, but I have to warn you, that semiconductors should not reach a temperature higher than 85C (185F), as some semiconductors will lose their conductivity above 85C. I don't exactly know what materials are there in the iX CPUs, but just to stay safe, don't go over 85C if not necessary. Also you should know, that if a semiconductor operates on high temperatures, it can lose its conductivity sooner than it should (think 25 years instead of 28), so use carefully. You can download Fan Control form http://www.lobotomo.com/products/FanControl/
