Is this Mac ok for work with FCP Studio 5.1?

Hi all,
in the next few weeks i'm hoping to make the change from PC to Mac based editing, using FCP Studio 5.1. This is what i'm thinking of buying:
imac 24" TFT (this will show HD won't it?), 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 DDR2 RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB, 250GB Hard Drive, DVD Writer.
Will this run FCP Studio 5.1 smoothly?
Many thanks, mat.
ps. what is the deal with FCP 6? Is it set for release soon? If so, i may put off the move until then.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
These specs suggest it should:

  • External Hard Drive for PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio

    Hello,
I'd greatly appreciate any recommendation for an external hard drive for a PowerMac G5 for use with FCP Studio.
    Thanks.

We see alot of Lacie issues here and elsewhere.
Drives fail... period. I believe you hear more about Lacie drives failing because they sell a ton more of them than many other suppliers. I've got 8 of em sitting right here on the desk and two more at the second station. I've lost one since I started using them years ago (and it had problems right out of the box) and I use them pretty heavy.
I understand that they use several different brands of drives in their enclosures, but from my experience they must have pretty good QC standards for what they package.
The guy said the G Techs were a little overkill for his needs. Lacie doesn't pay me. But if someone asks "how are Lacies?" I'll tell them they've been great for me and many others I know, especially if your requirements are capturing DV.
In five years, I ain't heard anybody say anything about it.
As for FCP. I love it! In 20 years of business, it's probably the purchase that's given me the most bang for my buck. But if you haven't heard people knock it, you've never met an Avid zelot, bruhhhhh, just the thought gives me shivers.
The drives X mentioned are designed for video work.
What Studio said, well he gives out some of the best advice on this board
(and maybe the most! ) and my reply to his post... that's why I used the little smiley face. No offence intended X.
I only meant to say that, in a world where software like FCP can do what it does at the price it does it, and drives like Lacie and G Tech can give you the storage they do for the price they do, the line between consumer and professional products is easily blurred.

  • 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7     WILL IT WORK WITH FCP?

I am planning on purchasing the new IMAC 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 27" screen for work with FCP. The requirements to install FCP state in relevent part:
ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel Graphics processors not supported).
Does this mean that the 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 27" screen will NOT OPERATE FCP. I know that the Quad-Core Intel i7 is an upgrade for the system should I stay with the basic NVIDIA graphics processor?

I understand there is a difference between the "graphics cards" and the Processor and Memory?
    Graphics Cards:
27-inch model with dual-core processor, one of the following:
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
    27-inch model with quad-core processor:
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
I am going to purchase the quad-core processor which will come with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
The Processor and memory according to Apple Specs are as follows:
27-inch models only, one of the following:
2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.2GHz
2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz; Hyper-Threading for up to eight virtual cores
I would like to purchase the 2.8GHz quad-core Intel core i7 processor
This is where my concern is when FCP says (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)!

  • I have downloaded MAMP for Mac and want to use it for working with Wordpress. I had mysql installed before this and would like to uninstall it and use MAMP. It was easy to turn off Apache and PHP but don't know how to uninstall mysql. Please help!!

I have downloaded MAMP for Mac and want to use it for working with Wordpress. I'm on an Imac with Maverick OS 10.9. I had mysql installed before this and would like to uninstall it and use MAMP. It was easy to turn off Apache and PHP but don't know how to uninstall mysql. Please help!!

It depends on how you installed it. You have to shutdown the MySQL service first. If you used the standard, but obsolete Startup Item, you can do that with the Startup Item. If you created a launchd script, you can do it with launchctl. Once MySQL is no longer running, you can delete the Startup Item or launchd script and the rest of MySQL.

  • Mac Pro RAID block size recommendations for working with audio in Logic Pro

I have recently ordered a Mac Pro and plan to do a RAID configuration across 3 HDD's
The RAID type i am going to do is a RAID 0 striped.
The computer is going to be used primarily for audio post production and working with 20+ 24-Bit audio files at any one time within a Logic project.
I want to know what is the best block size i should use when configuring the RAID.
I understand that using a higher block size is best for working with large files but do i need to do this in my case or will the default 32k block size be enough?
    Thanks in advance

Use 64k. Things like databases like having 32k blocks because of all the small files. Audio files are pretty small even at 24-bit 192KHz. Go to 128k if all you are doing is streaming and no samples. But 20+ 24-bit is really not too large anyway considering most modern HDD's can stream 100MB/s off one spindle. You'll probably be fine regardless of the block size you choose. But most audio pro's choose 64k.

    Hello,
Only option is upgrading your Mac's OSX, since Apple will not allow iOS to go backwards.

  • What is better Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Exel

I am working on Macbook pro retina for around 16 hours a day,  it is ok but the screen is to small. I am opening about 25 - 30 EXCEL windows, 20 - 25 safari windows at the same time. Excel windows are small, they only show 40 rows and S column   Now I am considering buying  iMac 5k ( but the screen is only 27", however a very high resolution but I think that fonts and digits displayed may be too small ). I am also considering Mac Mini or Pro with 40" 4K TV ( 4k computer monitors are 27 - 31" , so better idea would be purchasing iMac 5k ) . The problem is that 40 - 42" TV don't have Display Port ( I can't find  it anywhere )
Please help me to choose what would suit my needs better. I need large screen to work comfortably with an Excel sheets.  What is better? Mac Mini or Mac Pro and 4K 40" screen or iMac 5K for work with Excel ?. The other problem I have is that when I spend  16 hours at work with retina macbook , my eyes are ok. Using the  30'' Dell screen 2560/1440 my eyes are tired after 2 hours.
Thanks for your help on advance
    Best regards

Currently you can only get 4 K at 30 Hz via HDMI. Some users have reported jerky curser movement because of the 30 Hz.
I would go for the 5K iMac. You can add a second screen at 4K.
    FaceTime HD camera
Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on an external display
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes
    The Mac Mini supports:
Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors
    Thunderbolt digital video output
    Native Mini DisplayPort output
DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    HDMI video output
Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz
The 2013 Mac Pro can use three and more displays:
Mac Pro (Late 2013): Using multiple displays - Apple Support
I would go for multiple screens

Does ProRes 4444 work with FCP 6? I don't think so but wanted to check before I had the film lab telecine my film. I'm stuck with FCP 6. Might have to go with ProRes 422 (HQ) ?

See, I knew the editing gods would humble me.
I just re-tested this on a separate FCS 2 partition and it turns out my memory was failing. While you can read and import the new ProRes codecs, you can cannot render out to them in the FCP 6 + QT 7.6.2 universe. So yeah, getting all ProRes4444 files would be a hassle on an FCP 6 setup.
Ugh, sorry for the bad steer.

  • WP Greek Century in Mac doesn't work with Dreamweaver

I am a many year PC user and have finally made the leap too Mac and its another learning curve .. That said, in Dreamweaver and in Mac, WP Greek Century does not work!  I have reloaded the font and all I see is the alpha #.   If I load it into any browser, it still will not read greek.  My old PC didn't have a problem with this.  Some of the download sites say that this font, WP Greek Century, works with both PC and Mac.  The one odd spin to all this is that this greek font works in Fireworks ... Is there anything I can do to make it work in Dreamweaver?  Please advise and thanks.  Mark

Thanks for your reply and I was afraid that this might the answer.  Looks
like I'm going to have to go back and fix a bunch of documents. Appreciate

Fonts don't work on the web like they do in print.  Any font you use on a
website will require that the end user have that same font installed on
    their system.
I did try to load that font from a free source (assuming this is how you
got it).  It is a PC TrueType and doesn't appear to work at all on the
Mac.  Now if you are looking for just a few characters you can code this
    into the HTML:
    http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/bylanguage/greekchart
.html .  As far as other fonts, this greek font seems to work on Mac:
    http://www.dafont.com/ancient-geek.font .  But again, it's not a web-font
so you won't be legally allowed to use it on web pages, and it will only
work if the end user has that font installed on their system, unlike the
    HTML entities previously linked.

  • Firefox 3.6.27 (Mac) doesn't work with Google Blogger's Blog Archive links?

I noticed this just started happening about week ago. Firefox 3.6.27 (Mac) doesn't work with Google Blogger when clicking in the Blog Archive sidebar links. I can't upgrade because I'm using a PowerMac. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

I press the combination after having some of the document's text selected, otherwise there wouldn't be anything to apply the paragraph style in the first place. But the real thing is I do the exact same with other paragraph styles combinations (Cmd+Alt+1, Cmd+Alt+2, Cmd+Alt+4, Cmd+Alt+5...) and it works. In Safari, even the one I'm interested in works (Cmd+Alt+3). The natural solution, it appears to me, would be a shortcut conflict, but I can't manage to find it, not even disabling my four add-ons (Adblock Plus, bookmarks-deiconizer, Customizable Shortcuts, YouTube to MP3). The Google forums are not finding a solution either. Anyway, thank you for trying.

  • How to get lg BE14NU40 blue ray burner to work with fcp or compressor

how to get LG BE14NU40 Blue Ray Burner to work with FCP X or Compressor??

    Hello Ron,
First up, you don't have to use Compressor to burn a Bluray Disc.
FCP X can do this with it's own built-in software. Compressor of course can do the job.
In my experience some burners work and some don't.
I use an the older version of this burner:

MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode was my video format that I have been editing, whereas the different format aside  "MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode" works in FCP. Please help me.

Yea, it sounds like the backlight is going, or the inverter.  If you let it sit in BIOS for awhile will it happen there too?

  • Intel based Macs don't work with NUMARK TTUSB turntable

I just bought a Numark TTUSB turntable to digitize my vinyl collection and after a few recordings it begins to make a buzzing humming distortion. I tried my other Mac (also Intel processor) and tried different needles, etc. When I went to the Numark webpage forums, the Numark representative suggested posting this problem in the Apple forums. A pathetic excuse and idea in my opinion as none of you work for Numark nor Apple, but if you did, or if you know someone who does, they should fix this problem.
Let me know if you can help in any way.

    Hi DJCooper!
I unfortunately can't speak for Numark, nor Apple (though I do work for them), but you may wish to contact Apple's technical support group and ask to speak with someone from their Pro Apps support division. I'd imagine that someone within their group that works with Logic Studio might have at least some more insight for you, or advice, etc.
If you don't have AppleCare or have purchased a Pro Apps, there may be a fee associated with speaking with a member of their team (don't know, specifically). But that'd be the best advice I can think for this specific inquiry. If anyone within Apple's support group works with turntables it'd be the Pro Apps / Logic team (that'd seem to make sense to me).
    Good Luck!

  • [announce] vps-lxc; comprehensive tool for working with LXC containers

    available...
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34507
this is going to be brief, more later.  for some time i have been developing a comprehensive solution for working with LXC based VPS containers on my Arch servers.  it is about 95% complete, and ready for testing by others.
this system will allow you to build template containers for _any_ distribution if it has bootstrap type utilities (i have only implemented Arch based containers, Ubuntu and Debian will be done soon, with Fedora, maybe Opensuse, maybe others can create these?).  once the templates are created, they can be "forked" into usable domains, and the LXC config (for the lxc-* user tools) can bee 100% generated from command line options to "vps-lxc mkdom".
the code is very consistent and clean, and can easily be extended by writing/implementing your own subcommand files.  there is a command.proto file to get you started, and the "vps-lxc proto" command will show you the example command.
there is proper bash completion for most subcommands, mktpl and mkdom the exceptions for now (they have several options and i want the completion for those to be awesome).  BTRFS will be used for efficient template/domain creation if available.
    see here for more details:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/lxc-users@l … 00148.html
try it out if your interested in LXC, i'm using it now and its working pretty nice.  ls, init, and edit subcommands will be up soon.
here is an example of output, and do this to get started.  the system is well commented, and the usage/exception strings should guide you:
    cr@ph1 ~ $ vps-lxc help
    Usage: vps-lxc COMMAND [help|OPTION]...
Create, destroy, interact with, and manage LXC based Virtual Private Server
    (VPS/container) domains and templates.
    Creation/destruction COMMANDs:
mktpl create a new template from scratch or based off an existing template
mkdom create a new domain based off a pre-created template
    rmtpl remove a created template
rmdom remove a defined/created, STOPPED domain and it's configuration
    Definition/edit COMMANDs:
define initialize a domain after editing it's configuration (once)
edit edit the persistent configuration of a VPS (requires reboot)
    Control/interaction COMMANDs:
start send a STOPPED domain a signal to start
stop send a RUNNING domain a signal to stop
reboot send a RUNNING domain a signal to reboot
enter enter a domain and interact via console (limited, config specific)
    Query COMMANDs:
help what you are seeing right now
tree view the VPS system's directories/files in a tree

    Cheers.
unfortunately i have not done much work on these for several months, as i have since moved myself and my clients to the google appengine.  however, i do follow the lxc list and devel, and they should still work ok (possibly some minor tweaking).
the scripts are very easy to work with, and are modular; you can extend what you need.  they provide stacktraces and basic exception handling.
i do intend to work with lxc soon, and will pick vps-lxc back up then.  feel free to run with it; send me patches if you find problems.  if you have issues w/vps-lxc or lxc itself just report here and i will guide you.  i was hoping others would find it useful and share some of the workload, meh :-)
