Is this method of backing everything up a good idea?

I have two computers (both Mac Yosemite, one a Mini, the other a MBP), a couple cell phones and an apple TV that share my home network.  Neither of my computers have a hard drive that is large enough to store everything I need, so I'm in the market for a NAS drive.  I've more-or-less settled on the Synology DS 213J because of the very high reviews on Amazon.  My plan is to do the following for backup:
Computers:
    1) Cloud-based backup provider - this is for offsite storage in case of fire
    2) Set up a partition on the Synology drive to run as a time capsule, and use Time Machine on both computers to back up to it whenever the computers are connected to the network.  This is for onsite backup where I can access multiple versions of a file, quickly.
Cell phones:
    1) backup up both to icloud
Synology NAS: (it will be a dual-drive, mirrored system)
    1) Back up the data to Amazon Glacier service using a utility provided by Synology
    2) ?  I would love to have an onsite backup of this drive that stores several versions of each file, but I'm not sure how to do this easily.
    3) i don't think its possible/practical to back up the Time Capsule partition on this drive...I'm guessing that the data is stored in large files that get updated frequently, and that doesn't lend itself to easy backups.
Thoughts?

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • What is the Oracle supported method for backing up OCFS2?

    Hi
    My customer has been trying to backup Oracle Cluster File System (ver 2) with netbackup 6.5, but not via RMAN.
    They want to know if this method of backing OCFS up is suppported?
    But I think the supported method has to use a netbackup Oracle agent and RMAN
    Can anybody confirm this please?
    Regards
    jethro_p

    The recommended method is thru RMAN only. Directly backing up OCFS thru netbackup is not a reliable backup.
    We faced an critical oracle error & the database went down. We are not able to bring the database with the direct backup thru veritas. Then we restored the database only thru rman backup.

    I recently got the new iPhone 5c I used icloud to back everything up from my 4s to my new 5c.  Now, I keep getting a pop up that says Continue Restoring?  (This iPhone has not been backed uprecently because it has not finished being restored. Would you like to finish downloading any remaining purchases and media before backing up, or delete them along with any app date?)
    I seleted to finish downloading because I didn't want to lose anything.  It still will not finish downloading and I have tried this several times.
    What do I need to do to that I can get my iphone to back up and so that I can install the new iOS?

    Hello there, Brandifoote24.
    The following Knowledge Base article offers up an explanation of what you're error signifies:
    iCloud: Understanding Backup alert messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4576
    "This iPhone has not been backed up recently because it has not finished being restored. Would you like to finish downloading any remaining purchases and media before backing up, or delete them along with any app data?"
    This message is displayed if your iOS device has been trying to complete a restore for more than three days. This can occur if your restore has been interrupted due to network connectivity issues or some other problem occurs.
    Being that this is the case, you would want to go back to the article it seems you were referred to us from and try to restore from your icloud backup again:
    iCloud: Troubleshooting restoring an iCloud backup
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4036
    How do I restore an iCloud backup if my device is already set up for use?
    You'll need to erase all data and settings from your device, so first confirm that you have an iCloud backup to restore:
    Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage, then tap the name of your device to view a list of iCloud backups.
    Check the date of the backup you want to restore, because you'll be restoring only what iCloud backed up on that date.
    After confirming that an iCloud backup is available, follow these steps:
    Connect your device to a power source and make sure that it is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.
    Follow the instructions for restoring your iOS device from an iCloud backup, which include making sure that your device is using the latest version of iOS.
    If the issue persists, then I would troubleshoot Wi-Fi using the following article:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

    Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

    I just bought a new iPhone and accidentally backed it up with my old iPhone backup, I do not want this. I lost everything on my new phone and I need it back. PLEASE HELP! This includes pictures and texts, etc.

    So just to be clear, when you say "just bought" how long ago was that? Is it on this new iPhone that you had pictures, texts, etc that you want? Were you backing up to iCloud or onto iTunes?
    This may not help for everything but if you go to iCloud.com and log in, are you able to find your pictures there?

    You cannot override it.
    What version of itunes do you have?
    You need itunes 10.1 or higher to get ios 4.2.1 which is the latest available for the iphone 3G.

  • Rooting US K1 --- this method wipes tablet clean

    Hi I used this method last night to root my US K1 tablet. It took about 20 mins to do. This method comes from a user timmyDean. Read the bottom of this page to see more information :
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404351&page=5
    He also created another method for permanent root and for users with Non US K1 tablets.

    Cool K1_a301_13_13_111209_us rooted K1-V2 - Rooting and Flashing TOOL K1_A301_13_13_111209_US
    With some help from (gallahad2000), I've got K1-V2 Root and flash all done. Please read the readme.pdf. Also, note that this tool will erase everything on your tablet. This tool will flash your tablet to the latest US version (K1_A301_13_13_111209_US). It is TOTALLY stock other than root(#).
    =================================== Release notes-- V2
    http://www.multiupload.com/97J3WS7P1D
    ===================================
    - Fixed factory restore and OTA's - Fixed Superuser and busybox applications - Added back in the additional 'bloatware' user applications which also fixes missing favorites.
    The original tool V1, was based on K1_A301_04_04_111017_US and was buggy, plus the rooting process also broke factory restore and OTA's, and the Superuser tools weren't the latest. Plus it removed the default user applications that some people liked
    This is TOTALLY stock A301_13_12_11209US with only su, busybox, and Superuser tools. This is what everyone has been wanting. Everything should work (Netflix etc), because it is the latest release.
    WARNING: OTA's will download and install which will remove root. So be careful when accepting an OTA. I did not turn OTA's off, so beware updates will break root. I created a backdoor application that you can use to install a backdoor prior to installing an OTA. It is a script and it is in the folder called backdoor (you need adb working). Then you can use the backdoor to get back in and set back up root. But, this should be only done by someone that knows what they are doing. Also, some OTA's reset the entire tablet which also removes the backdoor. So, prior to installing any OTA, you should look at the update and ensure it won't break root and ensure the backdoor would allow you back in as root.
    ================================================ Flashing none US Stock ROMS ================================================ In theory, you could download a different ROM from http://download.lenovo.com/slates/k1/OTA/ and then replace the boot.img in the tools Image folder. Then, all you'd have to do is mount the system.img (which is also in the Image folder) and replace the files with the ones from your OTA. However, be careful because Lenovo changed the boot blob in 04_04. If you mismatch the boot blob, your tablet will just loop rebooting and rebooting. ================================================
    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// I could make a flashing tool to flash back to TOTAL STOCK with no root. Let me know if anyone is interested in that? I have K1_A301_02_02_110725_US.zip flash I could post. This would allow you go back in time to stock and then roll forward using OTA's. You could even download a different country OTA (as long as it's newer) and manually flash a different stock image. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    Hope this all works for you, TD Last edited by timmyDean; Yesterday at 07:09 AM.

    Very interesting. I recently installed Avast Internet Security...part way. There were a few items that indicated the need to be root to get full functionality. I'm not sure I want to root my device. I had  Nook Tablet and was pretty happy with it until the day B&N decided to block me from sideloading non B&N downloads. They took it back and for $30 more I got the K-1 at a Staples in Massachusetts.
    Very happy to have regular Android Market. Am learning to like Honeycomb after using Gingerbread on my phone for a year plus. Not sure I'm all that excited about getting ICS and haven't heard if Lenovo will be doing an OTA update, or any other kind of update. If Lenovo doesn't do it there's always CM9...eventually.
    I did root a refurbished Nook Color and install CM7 on it for my daughter and she's happy. She was overseas when I got the B&N "security update" that was the last straw for me. I emailed her to turn OFF automatic updates before she gets back to the States or she'd probably have the same fate as I did with the Nook Tab.
    Is it device specific or do those OTA updates always remove root from any Android device?

    Hi,
    this article has a use case for the POJO approach: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/issue-archive/2011/11-may/o31adf-352561.html

    i plugged in my iphone 4 for the first time to my computer to back everything up. but when i got to the screen to click on "new phone" or restore to the "same phone" i clicked "same phone by accident. now i have all of my old information from my G3s on my new iphone 4. how can i reverse this? please help.

    Hi, raneth's boyfriend!
    Unfortunately, iTunes was told to restore all data from an old backup onto the new phone, and that cannot be undone.
    However, prior to this, iTunes 10 would have also asked to make a backup of the phone before doing the restore.  If the user elects to say "yes" to perform the backup, then iTunes would have backed up the phone before erasing it.
    Hopefully, that backup will still be available in iTunes, and if so, it would be backed up under the new phone's name prior to it being erased and restored (if the name of the new phone is different to the name of the old phone).
    To check if iTunes has a backup of the phone prior to the restore, look in the Devices category in iTunes Preferences.  All backups made are timestamped and are identified with the iPhone's name at the time of the backup.  Look for:
    • a backup of the phone using the new phone's name prior to the erase and restore, or
    • a backup with the same date and time as that when the phone was erased and restored (not the date and time AFTER when the phone was erased and restored!).  This may be the case if the new and old phones have the same name.
    If a backup is available, you can erase and restore again using that backup. The phone will be restored with what would hopefully be the original image of the new phone.
    If no backup was made prior to erasing and restoring the phone initially, then there is no way to
    undo it, meaning your phone's original data has been lost.

    Re Time Machine
    I have an external  hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
    I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
    will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
    can I split it the drive in two partitions?
    Also
    as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
    OSX 10.68
    the other is
    OSX 10.75
    can I back them up separately?
    or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?

    You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
    But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
    With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

  • How to call a method in backing bean on hitting 'Enter' key on a page.

    Hi all,
    I would be obliged if any one can provide me solution for the below given problem.
    My requirement is to call a method in backing bean when i hit 'Enter' key on a JSP page.
    I am trying this by using a script given below.
    *function fnChangeFocus(){*
    *if(window.event.keyCode==13){*
    * document.getElementById("mainform:submitForm:commandbutton").focus();*
    The JSP has the textbox as given below.
    *<h:inputText id="inputtxtboxid" disabled="false" value="#{Bean.inputvalue}"*
    onkeypress="fnChangeFocus()" size="24" />
    Using this I could not acheive the required functionality. Please suggest some alternative.
    Thanks,
    Jagadeesh Pala

    Only a form element supports the submit() function. Make sure that the getElementById returns the appropriate form. Or rather pass the element as the 'this' reference to the function and get the parent form from it.
    After all this is just basic DHTML / Javascript+DOM knowledge and in fact this has nothing to do with JSF. For future basic DHTML / JS+DOM questions you may take a look at the appropriate forums, e.g. dhtmlcentral.com, dynamicdrive.com, etcetera.

  • Action method of backing bean called multiple times instead of once.

    Hi,
    My backing bean has an action method called "saveEquipmentList" that's called when a "Save" button is clicked. The problem is, this method gets executed twice every time the button is clicked so data gets peristed twice, db triggers get executed twice, etc., it's really pretty annoying. I've put the bean method's code and the JSF command button below, notice that there's a check for FacesContext.getRenderResponse() that I put in for debugging, the code doesn't get executed at all if I leave the FacesContext.getRenderResponse() in, sure, you're saying "So what's you point", no point, just thought I'd explain why the check is in there.
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • Calling init method on backing bean when JSP loads

    Hi All,
    My problem seems simple, but I'm not having much luck finding a solution.
    I have a JSF page that shows the details of an employee. So I have an employee.jsp with a backing bean EmployeeController which works fine.
    The change I need to make is this: pass in an employeeId to the URL and let my controller read it.
    I've tried the following in my faces-config.xml:
    <managed-bean>
      <managed-bean-name>exmployeeBean</managed-bean-name>
      <managed-bean-class>
        com.acme.EmployeeController
      </managed-bean-class>
      <managed-bean-scope>session</managed-bean-scope>
      <managed-property>
        <property-name>employeeId</property-name>
        <value>#{requestScope.employeeId}</value>
      </managed-property>
    </managed-bean>And the following in my backing bean:
    public void setEmployeeId(String employeeId) {
      logger.info("METHOD CALLED");
      this.refreshValuesForEmployee(employeeId);
    }But I'm not having any luck (ie - this method is not being called).

    it's ok. i found out why it wasn't working.
    my scope was set to "session", but had to be "request" so that i could use the params syntax.
    thanks anyway.

    my daughters ipod 4th gen will no longer charge past 20% and will not connect to a pc in order to back everything up. the cable is working fine, otherwise it would not even charge to the 20%. i have tried the reset to not lose any data and no luck, home+power for 10-15 seconds. I really would like to not lose everything she has, again, because I can't back it up this time. I have tried charging via a wall outlet and PC and both charge fine, just only to 20%. I am using the cable that came with it so no aftermarket issues there. Please help so I don't have to reset everything again.

    Because once it has charged enough to be powered on as soon as you turn it on it says battery is at 20% and will not charge anymore after that, it just runs for about 5-10 minutes before the battery dies again. The battery cycles discharge/recharge daily and its not on the charger at full charge for more than a couple hours and is never totally dead for more than a couple of hours.
