Is this "Noise" or is it "Grain"

In the attached screenshot of the result of a scan of a 15-year old slide, the face of the Woman in the red jacket has a lot of ugly spottiness.
I was believing that this spottiness is "Noise", But somebody else tells me, that this is not Noise but is instead Grain.
So what is it: Noise or Grain?
Thank You a lot in advance for your answer

Hello photodrawken and 99jon
A lot of thanks for your answers.
Can I please add the following question: Is it normal, that a good slide scanner (it was a Nikon D9000 Coolscan) produce similar results in the unedited photo file?
Until now, I have seen similar problems in shadow areas, if trying to massively lighten the shadow areas of a scanned Kodachrome slide. But up to now, I have never seen something similar problems in the unedited result of the 2000+ scans done by a  Nikon D9000 Coolscan,
I therefore wonder if the scan has really been done at the Scan shop with a Nikon D9000 Coolscan; or whether the scan has been done with a cheaper scanner and the file metadata has been doctored, to pretend that it has been done with a Nikon D9000 Coolscan. Are you aware of methods to verify that the scan has really been done with a Nikon D9000 Coolscan?
Thanks a lot in advance for your answers.

Ever since the ios7 update my audio is hissing and has static. Please help me get rid of this noise so I may enjoy my audio on my iPad

Just for the record, this is what I wrote to Apple feedback:
(If anyone really knows what the problem is, please let us know.)
    Apple iPad mini. Re: Hiss
Hi. I am one of the very unhappy people who can't use the iPad for recording since getting ios7.  The apple forum is replete with stories like mine: ios6 recording was quiet - ios7 is noisy. I have tried every suggestion. Why won't anybody at apple tell us what the problem is? I have been using macs since 1986. All I want to do is record my songs on my iPad. Unfortunately for me, I recently brought my iPad-mini refurbished so there is no warranty. If I had bought it new I would be at the Genius Bar until I got the problem fixed. Did I mention how unhappy I am?  Here are the specs: 1st gen iPad mini running ios7. Recording onto Multitrack DAW with a Samson Go mic to a 30-pin USB camera adapter, into an apple brand lightening adapter into iPad mini. Everything works fine except for the HISS.

  • Why is my iMac making this noise?

Everytime that I do something, my iMac makes this noise. Its anoyying can I fix it? I have an imac with an intel core 2 duo 3.06 ghz processor with 2gb of ram a 500 gb hard drive and an nvidia geforce 8800 gs 512 mb graphics card and i have snow leopard 10.6.3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r80l0NQjz8

    Hi Joann123
That sure sounds like the Hard Drive accessing data, some are noisier than others.
For example: the original 160GB Seagate Barracuda that came in my Early 2006 Core Duo sounded about the same. After using it in the iMac for 3 years I took it out and put it into an External drive, another year later it still sounds the same but works just fine as an extra backup drive for my music and photos.
I don't think that it is going to fail tomorrow, but if it really bothers you that much backup to be safe and by all means contact Apple as explained by those that have replied in your other thread.

  • Iphone 5 makes a rattling noise from day 1, the replacement also makes this similar noise. customer care can provide me with another replacement but can not promise if the new replacement will have this noise or not. can i get a refund ?

my iphone 5 from day one makes a rattling noise when you shake the device.
the replacement i recieved also makes the similar rattling noise, apple calls it a "common problem" and says its the autofocus of the camera which makes the noise, but people i know are not experiencing any such noise in their evices, hence its not their in all the iphone.
honestly investing Rs 45000 in india i dont expect my device to have a stupid defect as this one,
In my latest conversation i have had with a senior representative of apple care iv been given an option to have anpther replacement but they cant promise me that the new replacemnt will have no such rattling noise it might be even worse.
since apple cant promise me a replacement without any such noise and my device is not even 90 days old, and since apple calls it a common problem in iphone5 is it possible that they give me replacement of 5c or 5s and il pay the difference in price or just have a refund ? since they cant provide me with a solution and keeping this device with this defect is not a solution with me.

Sorry if it's over 14 days apple does not refund the device, just sit tight and keep on asking for a device that doesn't rattle, be firm but polite about your position on the matter.
    Politeness works wonders

  • Is this noise normal?

I just bought my macbook and I've never owned a mac. Well when I set it down it makes like a jingle noise. It seems to work fine but no sure if thats normal? Is it just the keys making that noise? I don't know I'm pretty new to computers?

It may be the battery cover underneath, there are a lot of users posting (including mine) that 'rattle' a little because the cover doesnt fully fit. This mostly makes the noise on a hard surface like a desk.

  • What is this noise and where is it coming from?

MBP 13", just over two weeks old, and it's making this high-pitched static-y crackling/buzzing noise. It's fairly constant, although it cuts in and out slightly at times. Sounds a little like a very faint radio stuck between stations, but more metallic and at a higher pitch. What is this, and how do I get it to stop? It doesn't seem to be related to speakers or volume settings at all, and audio is working fine. It sounds like it's the machine itself.

Try running the Apple Hardware test first. If it is the fan, you should get an error code with "MOT" in it. If you do, you should probably plan to replace both fans.
Also, check out your hard drive with S.M.A.R.T. Utility:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. If you have the original hard drive, be aware that most hard drives have a useful life of 3-5 years, and yours is getting into this category. If you find you need to open up the Mac to replace a fan, it would be a good time to consider replacing the hard drive with a bigger and faster one. Especially if S.M.A.R.T. Utility shows errors, even if the drive is not yet failing.
If you need take apart instructions, you can find them here:

    Good luck!

  • What on Earth is this noise (pic & mp3 included)!!!

I just did an offline bounce of a string part and Logic has fired a nasty burst of noise in the middle of it. I've never ever seen this kind of behaviour on an offline bounce...?!

After using Logic 9 on my G5 for a few days now, I'm starting to wander whether it's up to the task. Despite my initial thoughts, I think it is running slower and the CPU is definitely higher. Still, I can't explain this though. A little worrying.

    Hi Christopher,
Well aside from the processor icon you also have one for ATI. You didn't happen to have have followed this thread by any chance?

  • What is this noise, and battery problem on Iphone 4S

There was a battery problem on Iphone 4s so i was worried to buy it, but once I heard that Apple published new ios 5.0.1, I went down to the Apple store near to my house, and I bought Iphone 4S. First time meet with Iphone 4S great Siri, and more faster processer, I liked it, but after I used for 1 week I found many problems, there was battery problem still, and even there was noise problem, expeciallly the noise problem is annoying because when I phone call to my friend or home I can hear it very clealy...
    please fix it apple

Reset, will reset the battery meter is this is the problem. To Reset, hold both the Home and Power buttons until the iPhone restarts itself, ignore the "slide to power off", let the iPhone restart itself. Usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons. If not better, try tap Settings App > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. The set up your iPhone again. If not better, you may need to Restore the iPhone Firmware, I would perform this with iTunes on your computer.

  • Help diagnose this noise

So i just bought a presonus firebox earlier and hooked it up. love it already. but im still getting some of the line-noise thats been bugging me when i try to record my electric guitar directly in. I've uploaded this file, and im having a hard time diagnosing where the noise is coming from, whether its DC hum or anything else that could produce noise. ive got no CRT's in the room, or flourescant lights, or anything the room that would produce noise like this.
here's the file, and a walkthrough of what im doing throughout the test.
    http://www.bedrock-studios.com/noise.mp3
:00 - :07 idling, volume knob on guitar at full (noiseless pickups), 1/4" line from guitar to presonus firebox input, presonus preamp boosted to 0 db.
    :07 - :13 plucked E string
:14 - :17 cracked down preamp gain knob on firebox to -infinity (noise still present)
:23 disconnected 1/4" line from guitar (noise still present)
:30 disconnected 1/4" line from instrument input on firebox (noise still present, barely)
:37 - :39 cranking UP preamp gain knob on firebox (noise returns)
so its like the noise is inside the unit, and has nothing to do with line interference from my guitar.... is this what DC hum sounds like? could it be bad wiring in my wall outlet? or a bad presonus firebox? or is this just to be expected under these circumstances?
    am i doing something wrong?
    many thanks for any help
    chris

I think the guitar amp simulator is the thing generating the noise. Using that kind of plug to try to demonstrate a noise problem isn't the way to go. You want to record the cleanest signal path to determine how much noise may or may not be present.
Do another test: here you're going to make 4 separate recordings.
First, take the dist. plug and any other plugs out of the signal chain (bypass or remove them). Don't plug the guitar in. Turn the firebox's gain all the way down. Record a few seconds of that sound (which is nothing. That's right, you're going to record nothing).
Next, turn the firebox's preamp up to zero dB. Record a few seconds of that.
Next, plug the guitar in, preamp = all the way down. Record a few seconds.
Then turn the preamp up to zero dB (guitar still plugged in byt don't play it). Record a few seconds of that.
Now you have four recordings. Space them apart in your arrange page by a second or so. Then use the glue tool to put it all together.
Next, go into the sample editor and use the "change gain" function to boost the level of your audio file by 12 dB and post that.

  • Is this Noise Level ok?

Hello just wondering if one of you good people could take a look at these stats and just confirm for me that they are ok?
Have recently had a BT engineer call and rectify a problem with my broadband which i am now really happy with the results
my initial connection was 7915 which after a couple of days went down to 6190  after a couple of days which is still an improvement over my original connection of around 4000 prior to his visit.I have not manually reset the router which btw is a netgear dg834g v4 as didn't want to create any problems by resetting.it's the noise margin downstream  which seems high to me hence the post to verify .here are the stats: thank you.FAQ

  • What is this noise ?

I've recently purchased a MSI K7N2G-ILSR mobo. Everything seems to be working fine, except one thing. Whenever CPU utilisation goes high (playing games, folding at home, etc.) a weird noise emanates from mobo. The sound can be described like a big fly got trapped in my case and it's constantly buzzing  Sometimes chirping can be heard as well. When the BIOS setup is on screen, the chirping goes on with a constant frequency, about one time per second.
First I suspected one of system fans might be dying but a closer examination revealed the sound is coming from one of the mosfets, or one of the transistors sitting right next to them. I can't pinpoint the exact source because the relatively big HSF is obstructing me.
My current configuration is listed at the end of the post. I've tried setting all components to their default configurations, but that didn't help. I left the mobo, HDD and a single stick of ram in computer case to see if there's a conflict between other components and mobo but the irritating noise was still there. I can't think of enything else to try.  Any recommendations ?
I'll take the mobo tommorrow back where I bought it and ask for a replacement. Do you think I should get K7N2G-ILSR again or another Nforce 2 based mobo? I've kind of liked this board, but I suspect the shop might have a faulty batch in stock and I'm not sure if I should take this risk.
Athlon XP 1700+ (running at stock speed), MSI K7N2G-ILSR, 512 MB DDR PC2700, Radeon 9500 PRO 325/325, WD800JB, SB Live! Value, LG 775 FT, FSP300-60ATV(PF)
EDIT: Please excuse lack of proper info regarding the PSU in original post. This link should provide some information about it.

Replying to the post asking if Richard is guessing, he's not guessing this was the response he got from MSI when he relayed this thread to our MSI contact...
For all others read what I posted earlier in this thread...
Sometimes faulty parts are received by companies and cause things like this to happen...if you don't like the result then RMA (return manufacturer authorization) the board and get another one. DON'T plug that plug in on the second one...it's not mandatory that you do but it was put there to supply a stabilization voltage to the processor from the 12v line out of your power supply unit (PSU). If your PSU isn't good enuff it can do numerous things to the circuit: Cause damage to the circuit parts by loading them down and thus causing oscillations (the noise you're hearing is probly an oscillation).
It's hard for me to speculate on this being that I'm not sitting on a bench with an oscilloscope in my hand seeing specifically what this circuit is doing, but being that I've been a technician for the past 20 years it's a good bet that what I've said above is true.
RMA your boards for new ones and don't plug in the 4 prong plug unless you want to roll the dice and take the gamble.
BTW I didn't plug mine in and my system is totally stable.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!! 8)

  • What's this noise?

I was just working a game from dashbrd for about 45" and all of a sudden a major fan powered up and ran for 25 seconds & then faded out??
what's up? this has never happened b4. i hope it is not signs of things to come!!

I think that is overkill, especially if you use it a lot. I put mine to sleep every night, sleep 6 to 8 hours and wake it up or it wakes me up if I set the iTunes Alarm. (Which is a cool little app.) I have been doing that with my Macs for nigh unto 12 years, never had a repair, never had a breakdown.

I'm a new user and learning, I bought and installed Premiere Pro cs6.  I got a nice video clip but has a baby cried in the background and very annoying.  I have tried all of the sounds in Prem cs6 but didn't work. My question is, do I need to get a separate sound software download and install to be able to use it?

In the CS versions, there was some audio capability in PrPro but you needed to get a separate audio program for major work. Lessening a baby definitely qualifies as major work. That's lessening, i dont mean eliminating. Adobe's audio program is Audition. There are others "out there'. In the CC versions one just downloads Audution also.

  • My Mac is constantly making a dinging noise and it's driving me crazy.  the only way I can get it to stop is to turn off the volume.  why is it making this noise and how do I get it stop?  Is it some kind of setting?  thanks, D

FYI I have Snow Leopard.  Is it because I didn't upgrade to Lion?

It's probably a notification, for example when a new email arrives. Check the preferences for the apps you have open at the time.
