Is this okay? (Copyright Question)

With all the videos I see posted on YouTube with music from artists and bands, I was wondering if it is legal for me to use music I purchased on iTunes in videos I make on iMovie and then post them to YouTube. I really like the idea of being able to do this but am unsure of the legality of it
Thanks!

Here is what the Wikipedia says about using 'non-free' audio: "Brief song clips (under 30 seconds) may be used for identification of a musical style, group, or iconic piece of music when accompanied by critical or historical commentary and when attributed to the copyright holder.".

The educational 'fair-use' limitations on students and teachers using copyrighted content as part of course work are different from those involved in posting content on You Tube.

  • Okay. Question for all those IT wirzards (

Okay. Question for all those IT wirzards (& iTunes) experts out there. Anyone know why a playlist (Purchased) keeps dropping off my playlists in iTunes??l This has happened at least 15-20 times to me in the past couipe of years. Fofrtunately for me, I saved these songs to an external hard drive, so retrieval won't be so painful. Guess I just want to know how to avoid this going forward.

Just that one playlist goes missing and no other content? No idea. But it is clear you ought to have a backup so you can restore the database should it happen again.

  • I want to ask a question but is it supposed to go in this "Ask Your Question" field or should this really be a synopsis or a tersely worded teaser, like a "subject" line?

    Oh.
When I pushed the "Ask your question of the community" I got this empty box. But I've already asked my question. Should I copy and paste it into this box?
    > I want to ask a question but is it supposed to go in this "Ask Your Question" field or should this really be a synopsis or a tersely worded teaser, like a "subject" line?<
There. Now I have asked the same question, which is of questionable value, for sure, twice. So, if someone answers it, they will get twice the points. Right? Or is there another box for that? Should I paste the question into another box? Twice?
I've been around here for a l-o-n-g time, longer than ol' BenB by several years, so you'd think I'd know better.
    Maybe I do.

I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 with iTunes installed. Now my iPhone 4S is no longer recognized in iTunes. Connecting the iPhone with USB sends me directly to the MS app that downloads pictures from the iPhone. Suggest this is a question of missing Apple driver for Windows 8, iTunes and iPhone. MS does not care! This seems to be a general problem with Windows 8 that a number of drivers that used to work with Windows 7 now do not work, ie. iPhone to iTunes, HTC to HTCSync, Samsung to Kies etc. I need this connection to work in order to syncronize with Outlook and my iTunes library.

Maybe it would have been a better idea to confirm that iTunes is supported in Windows 8 before buying a computer with that Operating System.
There will be a new version of iTunes released this month... no one forced you to upgrade prior to a supported version of iTunes being released.

    Hi brev,
    Several points here:
    1. Although there is some compatibility between Numbers and Excel files, I doubt very much that "the idea of Numbers is to make it like Excel." The two applications share some similarities, but also have several differences.
    2. Your Question is unanswerable in this forum. Apple does not generally reveal future development plans or schedules for its applications, and anyone with knowledge of those plans will be bound by a non-disclosure agreement.
    3. "You need to" implies a feature request. If you want to request that a feature be added to a future version of Numbers, that request is better made directly to Apple, via the Feedback channel, than here, where the readers and responders are all users of the software, not developers. From the application menu (the "Numbers" menu in Numbers), choose Provide Numbers Feedback, then make your request for a feature to be added to Numbers.
Meantime, if you absolutely need the macros capabilities of MS Excel, try one of the Office clones—OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or NeoOffice, which may offer macro support, or use the Mac version of Excel itself.

    Barry

  • Is it Time.....this is the Question?  Opinions Please

Is it time...this is the question?
Every 3 or 4 months since the release of Leopard I ask myself this question. I've been using Apple's Tiger operating system since it was released and I've been extremely happy with it and more to the point so has my aging iBook G4. "Circa Mid 2005" I've had almost no problems running Tiger, it's the most stable OS I've ever used and for the most part the only issues that have ever given me grief or frustration has been 3rd party software and plug-ins for Safari. However recently I've started noticing that more and more software developers are not offering OS 10-4 updates and their new software versions will not work on the Tiger OS and/or require an Intel processor. It annoys me when I read about some great new software I'd like to try only to find out it won't work without Leopard.
I guess my question is two fold really, will upgrading to the Leopard OS give me a better computing experience on an older machine, or am I going to be held back regardless because my laptop still uses a PPC processor? At this stage I'm not really considering buying a new laptop as this one is perfectly fine and until now has been bulletproof! What is the experience/opinions of other Mac users who upgraded their older machines to Leopard? Was it worth the hassle and after the initial interest in a new operating system wares off would you recommend upgrading?
So is it time.........or should I wait until this machine dies and makes this question a mute point?

    Hi Raymon!
The kind of question we are all faced with at some time! Bear in mind that the following are only my opinions, as this is all very subjective!
It annoys me when I read about some great new software I'd like to try only to find out it won't work without Leopard
The main reason why I upgraded to Leopard was to run iLife 9. The other reason was that Leopard is likely to be the final OS upgrade for a PPC Mac.
will upgrading to the Leopard OS give me a better computing experience on an older machine
Define 'better'! I have only run Leopard for 2 weeks but so far, as in Tiger, I have had no crashes of any kind. BTW, updates to Quicktime 7.6 and security update 2009-001 are vital. The real answer depends on the speed of your Mac. Leopard is a bit more resource hungry than Tiger, but I have noticed no changes in operating speed, and certainly no slow downs. Leopard has a lot of eye candy: using all of it uses extra resources, but they can all be switched off! But I like the new versions of iTunes and Front Row.
Was it worth the hassle and after the initial interest in a new operating system wares off would you recommend upgrading?
See above! But it was no hassle. Use the Archive and Install method for upgrading. Best of all, clone your entire system to a bootable external drive before upgrading, then if all else fails you can always go back to good ol' Tiger.
The one thing you WILL notice is that repairing permissions on Leopard takes at least half an hour! On Tiger it takes 2 minutes!
Just in case you forgot: check that your Mac meets the minimum specifications for Leopard, and you need a minimum of 1GB of RAM despite what they claim!
    Good luck!

  • Can't mark reply "This solved my question"

In the email I received that notified me of a reply to my question, when I click on the link for either "This solved my question" or "This helped me", it takes me to Safari, but gives me the following:

It appears you're not allowed to view what you requested. You might contact your administrator if you think this is a mistake.
If I sign in to the Discussions, and go to Your Stuff and choose the question, I see the Legend, but there are no buttons for me to mark a reply as "This solved my question" or "This helped me".
Any idea why I can't do this?  I'm running Mac OS 10.8.5, and Safari 6.0.5.  Could there be something in my Safari settings that is blocking this?
    Thanks,

Are you talking about the "Legend" panel at the right of the window?
Those text are just help texts explaining the reputation points. You can only award points, if you are the original poster of a question. Then you will see active buttons to award points below the answers you receive. See here for more information: https://discussions.apple.com/static/apple/tutorial/reputation.html

Yeah i really am stupid. i clicked the "this helped my question" button to somthing that didnt help at all! any way to delete it?

No, the point award system does not permit retraction once awarded.  You just have to let it go.

  • How do I uncheck "This solved my question" on the Apple Support Communities forum?

I checked an answer as "this solved my problem" when it actually did not, and I don't want anyone to be mislead.
How do I uncheck "This solved my question" on the Apple Support Communities forum?

You can't uncheck it. You'll need to post the question again.
You could also just add the comment that it was not actually answered.

These machines in themselves are usually pretty good, with the occasional aberration. Let's hope you do not have a rogue.
Looking at the problems there seem to me (as a guess) two problems: incomplete processes and memory. The two may be related. The camera problem I would dismiss as simply that -- batteries run out and the Mac is trying to complete an impossible process: expecting data, data never arrives.
The Firefox problem may be something external: a badly coded page; something the browser (or Mac) was not equipped to handle (a plug-in for example) and this could put a strain on RAM.
Maya, I am not familiar with, but it is (if I remember rightly) graphics-oriented and that can be memory intensive).
Which all comes down to the RAM you bought. Without knowing what it is or where it came from, or your experience in installing it, that in itself could be a problem. You need to make sure that it is properly seated for one thing, that it is the correct type (although the information here suggests that you are on the right track) and that it is OK.
You might also want to think about posting a crash log here (find these in Console) as someone -- not me -- might be able to pinpoint a cause.

  • Screenshot copyright question?

I have no idea what forum I'd ask this question, so if my question can't be answered here, please advise where to post.
I'd like to put a screenshot of a Numbers spreadsheet on my website to demo something, but I don't know if there are any copyright issues. I've searched, but can't find any Apple page that deals with it. I found one for Excel on the Microsoft website with instructions, but nothing from Apple.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be appreciated,
    Doug

    Doug,
Here's what they say to do:

  • Copyright question for posting to the web

    hi all.
i am wondering if someone wouldn't mind giving me a bit of expertise on a question i have.
i have a set of images from various sources that are basically creative imagery. i have organized these and i would like to share them by posting them to an album on my flickr account.
i have named the files with the topic and the photographer and i am wondering if it is likely to create a problem. in /most/ cases these images are actually from the New York Times so the file name says "architecture house_ray jones NYT.png" or whatever.
is there a hard rule against this? is it possible to give attribution in the photo explanation and be OK?
    thanks for any advice.

You'd have to contact the copyright holder to find out what you can do with the images.
