Is this possible? 2 iTunes library 1 on HDD 1 on a NAS?

At the moment I have all my library video, music, TV shows together and it's becoming too big for my internal iMac HDD.
What I was thinking was having the video and TV shows in a seperate library on my NAS to save storage space. Is this possible? The NAS is a Buffalo Linkstation live.
I could then keep all my music which I use most often on interrnal HDD and video seperate for streaming to my Apple TV.
How can I do this please
cheers

(hopefully) one last question....
If I do this splitting and use Time Machine for backup what will it backup? Just the iTunes music on the internal HDD and just the references to the movies/TV shows?
time machine will back up any drive connected directly to your Mac (firewire, USB). TM will not backup networked drives. click here for information.
ie I will have to have a manual backup of my movies and TV shows, as these will only be physically on my NAS and no where else?
call me paranoid but i have double and triple backups of my media files, spread across various drives. all drives fail eventually so better be safe ...
bottom line, you need to backup manually - unless you want to move your library back from the NAS to a DAS so that TM can include your media files for backup to a TC or perhaps an e.g. 4 TB Drobo.

  • Backup iTunes Library External HDD?

I am upgrading to Leopard this week and want to do a complete clean upgrade to Leopard. My iTunes library is over 100GB, and I don't want to have to back it up to DVDs. How can I backup my iTunes library to an external HDD and still retain my precious playlists, ratings, etc...? I wan to also backup my entire library, not just purchased music etc..

The following link will give you the instructions to move iTunes to an EHD. These instructions need to be followed EXACTLY. From what you have posted, it sounds like one of the issues is you moved the whole iTunes folder, instead of just the iT music folder. The 2 metadata files within the main iTunes folder must stay on the main drive of your system as that is their "home", they can't be moved.

As a suggestion for future posts, it's always much better to start your own topic rather than disrupt someone else's topic with a similar but unrelated issue. It can also get very confusing to try to troubleshoot with several different people on the same thread who have different issues. Thanks!

  • My itunes keeps popping up with this; the itunes library .itl file cannot be found or created

i found my itl files and even when i click on them it still pops up with that message what do i do?

    Hello EliCooper,
It sounds like when you open iTunes, it says your iTunes Library.itl file cannot be located.  If you know where this is located, you need to point iTunes to this file to avoid the error message.  I found an article with the steps to choose your iTunes Library.itl file:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see one of the following screens:
Once you get that dialogue box, you can click on Choose Library and navigate to your iTunes Library.itl file.

  • How can i automate duplicating itunes library from local drive to nas

Basically, my only computer is a laptop and when i go away i take it with me to listen to music/watch films etc.
The problem is this. When i'm away my family can't access the music to play on various devices as it's stored on my laptop. I have a NAS drive and can map the media folder in itunes to it, but when i'm away obviously I can't access it. I'm quite sure there used to be a way in itunes to have your library mapped to a nas drive but also store the library locally. Am I just making this up?? Any Ideas? This is driving me mad. I know i can manually copy and paste files onto the nas but it's really not a viable answer.

Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
See if this helps. I think this counts for you NAS Drive.

  • ITunes library was working fine on NAS, now busted

Pretty much as it say. I had moved the iTunes library to a NAS and used it just fine on my Power Mac G5. The library file was there, as were all the tunes. Got the new iMac, and went to load up the iTunes library... nothing. Claims there is no librarty file. But it's there, same as it ever was, I can see it. This is driving me nuts.
Should I just write off the dozens of playlists & ratings I created and start over? I really don't want to spend hours troubleshooting this crap. Hoping for an easy fix.

No one here said anything about an update or your device needing it.
FYI, you are not addressing Apple here, we are all users like yourself.
If the device is in recovery mode, the only option is to restore it.  All data on the device is gone.  This should not be an issue if the device has been used as designed and regularly synced/backed up.

  • Best way to move iTunes library from network drive to NAS drive?

    Hi all,
I need to move my iTunes library which currently lives on a Buffalo network drive to a new Synology NAS drive.
What is the best way to move the library?
    Thanks,
    Ed

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • Possible to save itunes library to external HD, when partial is on HDD?

I moved my itunes library to HDD to save space on my macbook, but as i continue to add songs to itunes, it added onto the macbook copy of itunes.  Is it possible for me to save this itunes library to overwrite the old copy i saved on the HDD? How?
    I know its confusing.  Say
I saved my entire itunes library on external drive yesterday
today, i added 5 new albums on itunes, but it's residing on my macbook.
I would like to add this new library (old plus 5 new albums) and permanently move my itunes library to external disk.
I use to not like to have the external drive always attached to macbook since i use macbook as my primary browsing thing, but now i mainly use ipad.

I have most of the iTunes Library backed up in an External HD
What exactly do you have backed up on the external?

I am rebuilding my iTunes library, but still have all the old content on my iPod Classic.  I have just download some songs from the iStore and want to add them to the iPod, BUT when I try to sync it asks if I want to delete all content from the iPod and add only the material that I have just downloaded from the Store.  I do not want to lose my old content, because it is very extensive.

You are trying to sync to other than the one iTunes library you can sync to. You can copy music from multiple library/computer if you use the manual method of syncing. That method is described here
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
If you want to make this computer/iTunes library your syncing computer/library you have to restore the iPod on this computer/library. Restoring erases the iPod.

  • Do we really need the iFlick app to insert movie artwork into iTunes library?

As I noticed (many) earlier threads on this subject, this appears to be a recurring problem in iTunes. I have read that adding artwork to movies in iTunes could be done in 2 ways:
    - dragging the picture file to the preview pane of a playing movie
    - right clicking to "get info" and adding the picture file in the illustration tab
Some of the tricks reported were::
    - make the thumbnail of the movie poster the smallest as possible by sliding to the minimal value
    - transfer all movies from the default "home movie" folder to the "films" folder
    - drag the picture file onto the preview pane of a playing movie, wait until it hampers and then force-stop iTunes and restart (?duh?)...
None of these things seem to be working right now. Does it have something to do with the latest iTunes update maybe? I didn't have these problems before and all previously added movie artwork remains fine, I just can't add any new ones.
I saw a thread from Nov 2013 where someone mentioned that when using the "get info" function and adding the picture file to the illustration tab, the movie thumbnail blinks like in the way of processing, but afterwards, nothing is added. When going back to "get info", the picture file that has just been added, is not there anymore...
In the past, I also read something about file sizes of movie artworks, something about not exceeding 520px or so?
My iTunes library is on a WD NAS, I use a MacBook (2010), OSX Mavericks and iTunes 11.1.4.
I also tried a folder containing artwork files on the NAS drive itself: didn't work either.
Should the artwork source be somewhere in the iTunes folder or so?
It's quite frustrating and it shouldn't be rocket science to add an image file to a movie...

  • I want to move my iTunes library to my Time Capsule for both my Mac and my husbands PC to access

I have a Mac, with various iPads and iPhones in the family and a family network running from a Time Capsule.  I wish to move my iTunes library (which is home shared and connected to iTunes Match) from my Mac to my Time Capsule as it is using a large portion of my hard drive.  I then want my husbands/childrens PCs/laptops to also connect to this one iTunes library.

The library is working in its new location?  You moved it by copying the whole iTunes folder and not by changing any preferences settings?
I haven't done anything with library sharing so I'm no expert, but you will probably want your setup so each person has their own library but you use a common source of media.  One major issue is if you are using the library on your computer, nobody else will be able to use it because the library files can only be open by one iTunes application at a time.  Some of this might be possible with Home Sharing, or you can simply keep a common pool of media and trust each other not to accidentally delete a file everybody else is using.
Another item of concern is putting this on the Time Capsule drive.  Normally that is used for backup purposes and if you have you media on there too then you have no library backup.  Yes, you can use Match but it isn't really a backup service.  E.g., if you have media stored as lossless on the computer, match doesn't store it as lossless but in reduced quality.  It also won't back up the other things in your library such as playlists.

  • How can I transfer my whole iTunes library from a PC to another without losing any information?

Hi, I have a very large iTunes library which is the result of so many years of listening to music. Although my computer is pretty old and slow and I would like to buy me another one. However, I cannot risk losing all the playcounts, ratings and information that I've been adding through all these years and the "Home Sharing" feature doesn't keep it (more specifically, erases all the ratings and playcounts). So, I would appreciate any advice on how could you do it.
I've read that if you click on "Export library" and then modify it with a text editor changing the location of the main folders it would be a way, but as I said my computer is pretty old and ran out of memory a couple of years ago, and I have like thousands of songs that with this system I should change it manually one by one, and that would take me weeks to do it. There has to be an easier way!
    Thank you in advance!
