Is this REALLY a DAM?! Cannot locate offline images!!

The first thing I expect from a Digital Asset manager is that it can manage my Digital Assets ;-)
My Digital assets happen to be a lot of slides which I scanned in and which I keep on DVD's.
All files are just in the root of my DVD, no use sorting them in subfolders, they're just burned chronologically.
When I import my digital assets in Lightroom (keeping them in the original place), ALL my pictures on all my dvd's end up in ONE very big folder, named G:, the letter of my diskdrive.
Someone suggested: yes, but you can rename your folder after import to the volumename of your DVD (that's exactly what I would like to be the result of an import). Alas, you can't. First of all, if you try that, you don't rename the volume you just imported, you rename the name of the folder which keeps ALL of the foto's: All your pictures on All your DVD's seem to end up in the folder 'Slides078' or whatever you renamed G: to. And secondly, in no time Ligtroom renames the folder back to G:!
Another suggestion I keep seeing is: when you click the questionmark of an offline image, you get to see the original location as 'Foldername on Volumes\Volumename'. Again, I don't. All I get to see is: original location: "G:\filename"! I'm using Windows Vista; maybe, as someone suggested, it's an OS problem, and is the MAC version working fine...
I cannot figure out one way to get the Volumename of my DVD's (which I've written down on my DVD's, so that I can quickly find them) into Lightroom.
In other words, when I try to locate my offline images, all Lightroom is willing to tell me is: "This image is located on one of your many DVD's or CD's. Try to find it yourself, you lazy photographer!'
Do I really have to buy another DAM program to manage my offline images?!
I don't call this a Digital Asset Manager. I call this a HardDisk Manager with photoediting capabilities. No, not even that.
I call this a BIG BUG !!

You can blame LR that it doesn't use the Volume name for pictures just residing in the root directory of a disk. You are always on the save side if you put your images into folders.
The workaround is obvious: put your images never on the root directory but always into an folder with a name unique enough to find the disk if LR is asking for it.
If you have used plain DVD-R or DVD+R Media to archive your images you have to reburn to get a workable solution but this might also a good opportunity to switch to dvd-ram.
Side note: Archiving photos on DVD-R or DVD+R media is not save! With this media you risk data loss. There are quite some articles describing this. It is commonly agreed that DVD-RAM is much better suited for archiving puroses.
- with appropriate drivers you can use it like a hard drive filling it
step by step.
- you can change an update data files
- most of the newer DVD burner support DVD-RAM
- if not a DVD-RAM burner is not expensive (around 60$) and a very good investment
- if you do not like this idea store your files on portable hard drives
but not on DVD-R or DVD+R media.

  • Cannot locate image via Bluetooth

After taking a photo on my Nokia E63 and renaming it on the phone (to make for easier identification & retrieval), I connected my handset to my PC via Bluetooth, but I cannot locate the image on my phone or my memory card. It's the only image that I've stored on my handset that I cannot locate via Bluetooth.
Is there any reason why this may've occurred?

Given that, the only thing we can think of to give you is the generic procedure for transferring files to/from a BB:

  • OSX Mountain Lion - Cannot change desktop image

I used an image I'd downloaded as desktop wallpaper. I have tried to change it to the default image, other images, sold colours, but the same image always returns after I reboot (warm and cold boots). Note that I can change the desktop image, but it always reverts back to the old image. The changes do not stick. I cannot locate the image in Finder. Any ideas?

I have the same situation as Marc; however, I do not have access to images. The multicolor circle keeps turning.
This application (Desktop & Screen Saver) is not working anymore.
    Thank you.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I am not that tech oriented and
cannot easily find that folder. I did notice when I was booting up the LR software
that I could accept the site where LR usually is set up or choose a place. I am
thinking that the standard location for LR software is corrupted and that if I
chose a different place it would work. I say this because whether I use my
original disc or download from adobe I get the same warning. I have 100GB of
memory on the hard drive and I have cleaned the computer with Mcaffee and free
software. What should I do next? I can't use this software and I doubt LR 5
would open up with my current problem.

  • I cannot locate numerous songs in my library.  When I click to play the window state that it cannot locate the song.  When I look at my I-Tunes LIbrary under songs the far left column has "!" in it.  I do not know what this means.

I have been able to re-load all of the songs to my I-Pod touch that were not lost on the computer.  All of the songs were lost when I did a download of the new operating system.  Has anyone had this proble, and does anyone know how I can locate the files on my PC.  The list of songs and the album art have remained in the I-tunes window but the songs cannot be played because they cannot be located.  Does anyone know about the "!" in the left column and can this help in recovering the songs.  There are over 1700 songs that I cannot locate so I would appreciate all the help i can get.
    Thanks All!

    Hi,
All I do is click on the song, it asks me if I would like to locate it and I go to my music first.  It's normally in there and you just click on it and it reloads.  Or, search in your computer for it and it will locate it if it's there.  Click C drive and you can see all files then move the track to my music first.  Finally you could delete iTunes, reload it and press button: scan for media then it will give you back one of every song you have ever loaded digitally!
    Hope this helps.

    Hi bert,
the ".rm" extension is created by 'Real Media' application.
The easiest way to use it is to install the 'Real Media' player:
    1. RealPlayer BBC.app
    2. RealPlayer 12.app
I have both installed & use them sometimes.
(The 'BBC' wersion doesn't have any adverts with-in the app.)

I cannot play my rented movie because itunes cannot locate where the original file, has anyone face this problem before? Where can I find the location of the downloaded movie?

What did you use to download it with? iPad? iPhone? Computer?
If it's an iPad/iPhone, play it using the videos app.
If on the computer, look on the left side of iTunes in the library under movies.

  • A lot of songs in my library have an excalmation point to the left of the song.  This means the song cannot be located for syncronizing even though they can be played.  I have deleted all of them and started over but the problem still exists.

A lot of songs in my library have an exclamation point to the left of the song.  Apparently this means the song cannot be located for syncronizinf to the IPOD but yet they can still be played.  I have gone so far as deleting every song and then importing them.  Same problem.  This is not just a few songs but at one time was in the hundreds.
    Has anyone experience this?

The exclamation point indicates the media is not where iTunes expects it to be.
What happened just prior to this issue starting?

  • ITunes Files Lost & Really Cannot Locate, Please Help!

    Hi all
I have just downloaded the latest iTunes update and the latest IOS sodtware update 8.1 for my iPhone.
However, I have noticed my iTunes on my laptop has all gone wrong.  The majority of my music has the ' ! ' symbol next to it and the usual 'Cannot Locate File' message.  I have read several forums on here about the dragging of the 'iTunes Library' file to desktop, opening iTunes and then importing a New Playlist but this is only finding the music that I have purchased via the store opposed to the majority of my music that has been installed onto iTunes by copying from CD.
I am at a loss as to where they have gone or where they would have gone.  Can anyone help?
    Many thanks

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

    - Delete all AB and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Audio Book (if present) and delete
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
