Is this setup correctly ?

I have a Netopia dsl wireless modem/router, an airport extreme n type (not the dual zone)upstairs and an airport express n type downstairs.
I set the ip of the router to 192.168.0.1 and let it do the dhcp business, assigning ip addresses after 192.168.0.15
I disabled wireless on the dsl router and connected a cable between it, and the airport extreme wan port.
On the extreme I set a fixed ip address of 192.168.0.2, set internet to off bridge mode and got it to "create a wireless network",I ticked "allow wireless to be extended then disabled dhcp on it.
On the express, I gave it a ip address of 192.168.0.3, disabled dhcp, again internet in off/bridge mode and selected extend wireless, chose my wireless network from the drop down box, rebooted all, and have green lights on both extreme and express, and all seems ok.
Was wondering if the above is the best, most efficient way to connect my equipment ?
I could connect the extreme and the express by cable, would that be any better ?
And is there a "change over zone" between express and extreme coverage, if I move around the house.

Concrete and block are excellent construction materials. Unfortunately they have a deleterious effect on wireless network performance. Apple's KB article says concrete has a "high" potential for interference. Anything other than lightweight wood frame construction presents a challenge for any wireless network. Wireless signals can pass through several light frame walls and floors, but one concrete floor may be enough to block it entirely. Concrete floors are likely to have metal lath or may be reinforced with steel which makes things worse.
If you don't want to make a lot of noise and dust drilling holes through your nice concrete floors and walls, yes, powerline adapters may be what you want. I have no personal experience with powerline adapters, but I understand they work well. If you have a sufficient number of them you can build a wired network that is for all intents and purposes identical to one using only Ethernet cable. The idea is to connect an upstairs Airport to a downstairs one. While both require an Ethernet connection, whatever magic connections occur in between doesn't matter to an Airport. One caveat is that powerline adapters may not be able to support Gigabit Ethernet.
If your "RJ45 cable" bears correct markings for Category 5e network cable, is properly wired and terminated, then by all means use it. Gigabit Ethernet needs all eight conductors so check that. If you can read its markings post here and I'll verify what it is. If it's not properly terminated you can do that too.
WDS is a poor compromise; it's kind of a pain to set up, and results in decreasing bandwidth by 50% for each of the WDS base stations. It should be used only when there is no alternative. I suspect you would be very disappointed with its performance.
Also would the range of an express be less than that of an extreme?
No. They have identical transmitter power. Placement and orientation both affect range, so experiment to determine what works best.
Would the new dual zone AEB or time capsules help.
You would benefit from the dual band Extreme in that your iPhone, your windows "g" laptop and any other non - "n" device could use the 802.11g network without forcing everything else to that slower protocol. Also, if you can get an "extended" 802.11n network to function despite your substantial walls and floors, this method of wirelessly linking base stations does not suffer the bandwidth penalty of an 802.11g WDS network.

  • 10.4 dns setup correct but not working

i was working with a client to set-up VPN on an Xserve running 10.4 server; the server has been running fine for over a year and a half. We followed Apple instruction to connect the cable modem to one ethernet port (PCI), and left the internal network on the built-in. this seemed to work ok, but after running thru the Gateway Setup Assistant DNS no longer answers requests for the internal network.
I've checked the named.conf file and everything there is correct and as it was before. the same with the zone files in /var/named.
the only thing that seemed odd to me was that the resolv.conf file points to the external dns servers and not the internal server. I don't remember what they were wet-up with before, so i'm not sure if this is correct.
the server points to itself for dns in the network system preference on the internal network, but the external network gets its information via dhcp.
the only other thing we changed was to turn on the firewall and vpn.
since dns isn't working neither is kerberos even though the service is running. I'm assuming this is related and will work again once the DNS issues are resolved.
    any thougths?

If this machine is a nameserver for internal, then port 53 will need to be open on the firewall for the internal interface, and the external interface will have to allow responses from port 53 both TCP and UDP.

  • Why isn't google I feel lucky url search working? *about:config is setup correctly*

just lately the google I feel lucky from the url bar hasn't been working, it's not a case of being taken to a different search engine, I'm being taken to my isp's failed to find what I was looking for page.
    about:config is setup correctly.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I noticed on the 5th of may

    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS_hijacking
You may have an ISP that automatically redirects you to that search page if a DNS look up fails.
In such cases you need to contact your ISP and ask for a DNS server IP to opt-out of that feature.

  • Networked Printer Lanier LD 140 not working, how to setup correctly?

Trying to setup a networked printer in OS X 10.9.5. I am setting up the printer by knowing the IP address of the printer on the network. What are the correct options to setup this printer correctly on the network? I have tried various options. The printer either prints a lot of pages, or the document is never sent to the printer. I checked Lanier's website, and installed the printer package with no luck. The website does not have a lot of information regarding setting up the printer to work with OS X.

The "printing lots of pages" symptom nearly always means the printer doesn't have the postscript module installed, and it only recognizes HP-compatible PCL 5e/6. However, Lanier only provides Mac users with a Postscript driver. In other words, you can't use the Lanier-provided driver with your printer.
You can use the OS X built-in generic PCL driver.
When you set it up, use IP > HP Jetdirect protocol, then find the generic PCL driver.

  • Will this setup work for Color Calibration / Matrox / Enzio Monitor

Hi, I'm getting conflicting answers from Matrox forum and DVinfo.
I'm wondering if this setup will work for editing wedding films as well as doing color correction...
I'm using FCP 7 / FCS 3. I have a DVI input as well as a DisplayPort input on my Mac Tower which is about year old.
    Monitor: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/687611-REG/Eizo_CG223W_BK_ColorEdge_CG223W _22_Widescreen.html
Converter/Capture Card: (This is where I'm confused.) I'd also like to keep it under $800 if possible and be compatible with FCP X
    http://www.sharbor.com/products/MTXN5010167.html
Can I also use a displayport to HDMI to connect my Mac tower to the Matrox as well as a HDMI to DisplayPort to connect the Matrox to the monitor or will this ruin or downgrade the signal?
Or is there another card that I could use that is simple to install?
    Thanks for you help!

    >Can I also use a displayport to HDMI to connect my Mac tower to the Matrox as well as a HDMI to DisplayPort to connect the Matrox to the monitor or will this ruin or downgrade the signal?
No.  The Matrox MXO2 line connects one of three ways: PCIe slot in MacPro, Express34 for MacBook Pro, and Thunderbolt (additional cost for the adapter).  If you have a MacPro..you put the MXO2 adapter card into one of the PCIe slots, then connect that to the MXO2 box.

  • DPS to iPad - Could someone clarify if this is correct please?

    Hi All,
Is it possible I could pick someone's brains on this please? I think I've worked it out, just need to know if i have this right!
OK, here goes. I best start with what i intend to do. I shall be creating content for our local sales team on the road. So, first off, i don;t need to charge for content. This content (for now at least) wouldn't need a global audience so i don't need it available on either the apple or android store. So, in order for this to work, is the following procedure correct?
    1) Content is created in Adobe indesign CS5.5. Type of content created are single page 'articles'. Each 'Article' has 100mb cap limit
    2) 'Articles' are uploaded to Acrobat.com (Basic or Plus account for more than 1 published document) and assembled into 'folios' (2gb size limit on folio files?)
    3) Access is assigned according to which Adobe ID's have been added to the sharing list (is there a limit to the amount of people you can share with?). Reciever of content would require a free adobe ID and the Adobe Content Viewer App (plus tablet device)
Apart from the learning curve of how to do what in Indesign, is the export process for what i intend to use it for correct?
Many thanks in advance for any help!
    Kind regards
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
    You are pretty much there.
    1) Yes this is correct, you create an InDesign document, you can use either CS5 or 5.5. The pages contained within the document will be pages within your Article. If you want to have both a Portrait and Landscape version, shown when the iPad is rotated then you need to have two documents one containing landscape versions of your pages and the other containing portrait versions.
I usually create a folder named to match the Article name i.e. My Article, into that I save both documents naming them something like myarticle_h.indd, myarticle_v.indd, I also create two preview files, myarticle_h.jpg and myarticle_v.jpg and a "Table of Contents" preview file, this must be named tocPreview, png. If I have any associated files such as video or panoramas they go into an assets folder within the My Article folder.
In InDesign, after signing in to your Acrobat.com account via Folio Builder, you create a new Folio file using the builder.  Once the folio is created it opens to the Article window and at this point I usually select Import from the dropdown menu and point to the folder, in this case My Article, that contains all my files.
Once the files are located and you select Okay the folio is built and uploaded to your Acrobat.com account.
2)Yes, in Acrobat.com they are refered to as workspaces. A free account can only contain one workspace at a time. A premium basic account can have 20 workspaces. I'm not sure if there is a limit on the size of a Folio/Workspace of 2gb perhaps someone else can advise on that.
If you want to share the Folio you can share it via the Folio Builder in InDesign by highlighting the Folio and selecting Share from the dropdown menu. Add the Acrobat.com email address of the people you want to give access to. Once you've done this you will see an icon with two people on it.
You can also share the workspace via the Acrobat.com dashboard as well.
    3) Yes, but I'm pretty sure access is only available to those registered for an Acrobat.com account. You use the email address they used when registering, in some cases it may be the same as their Adobe ID.  The reciever of the content has to have the Ipad, the Adobe Content Viewer app and the email address they registered with on Acrobat.com. Once they open the app and sign in the Folio will load with the word "FREE" in blue and a "Download" button.
As far as I know there isn't a limit on the number of people you can add to a share.

  • Is this the correct type of Ram for a mac mini?

I have a 2007 Mac mini, and want to go from 1gig to 2 gigs of Ram.
    I currently have 2 512's
I need to know 2 things. (i'm pretty sure on both but i'm not a huge hardware guy to bare with me)
    1. Will there be any compatibility problems? I.e if i upgrade to 2 gigs will it even help or because the rest of the computer is not being upgraded will it be useless?
    2. If i'm good to go, Is this the correct type of Ram? http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=4E665783A5CA7304
Not sure if these are needed but will post anyway:
    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Type: DDR2 SDRAM
    Thank you in advance <3

    NO, it will NOT work.
You have to find the memory specific for Mac, and rule of thumb, Mac Intel chips usually take "ECC" memory. On occasions, You can get away with Non-ECC (on certain PPC Power Mac G5 towers) -- You can check on-line stores, like Newegg, Tigerdirect, or Goolge search for the Mac Mini memory. I got mine (for my two Mac 2,1) on line, and I put 4G (2x 2G), although only 3G was available.
It is worth of upgrade it. just need to find the right memory.

  • Frame Rate - Is this info correct?

If I have a 25 fps movie and I want to make an SD NTSC dvd I can drop it into encore and it will convert  it to 29.97 so it will play in a region 1 dvd player automatically. However if I want to make a NTSC blue ray then I will need to have a region free blue ray player in order to play it because it will keep it at 25 unless I take it into another program to convert it to 24 or 29.97. Is all is this info correct? Thank you

It doesn't affect the original media.

  • Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Why is this setup now blocked by Apple? Cannot download purchased music.

Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Each of us is using an own individual iPhone, which we frequently update with our iTunes Accounts. We have had this setup for years. It was convenient, reliable and user friendly, since we both could download what we wanted, create playlists, etc. without impact on the other. Exactly this convenience has made me and my wife real Apple fans, so that we also wanted to convince our daughter to move from Android and PC to our easier Apple setup.
Since a few weeks, this setup does not work anymore. From Apple Support (online chat on Apple.at) I was not told that this is not supported any more. Every computer is only allowed to be connected to one iTunes account. From one perspective (sharing music across other users as an act or media piracy, etc.) I can somehow understand this. However, since we are using different user accounts on this computer, I do not have access to other user´s iTunes media and could not play, download or copy it. So what is the point in this?
This now means, that my wife and I are only allowed to download individually purchased music with our personal iTunes accounts only with an interval of 90 days, so every on of us 2 times a year!
Was I incorrectly informed by the Apple support? If so, how can I solve the problem? Or is this really a new policy by Apple? If so, what is the reason? Am I expected to purchase a Mac for my wife, my daughter, myslef and for the three smaller kids to follow soon?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes.

  • I have an older Airport Base Snow that I gave to my brother to use for his apartment. It's connected to a cable modem and I have a network but it is not protected. How do I set a password? There is no computer in this setup, just an iPad

I Have an older Snow Airport Base that I gave to my brother to use in his apartment. It is connected to a cable router. I have a network established but it is not secure. How do I password protect this network? There is no computer in this setup, only an iPad. Thanks!

If this base station is actually the "snow" then you will need a Mac or PC that can run a version of the AirPort Utility that can administer this "very old" 802.11b base station. You won't be able to do so with an iOS device or Mac running Lion or newer OS.

  • When I open my computer I receive the following message: The procedure entry point sqlite3_wal_checkpoint couldnot be located in the dynamic link library SQLite3.dll How can this be corrected?  I never got this message before and I have a iPhone and iPad

With Windows Explorer, navigate to your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder.
Copy the SQLite3.dll that you should find there, navigate to the nearby Mobile Device Support folder, and Paste it in there also.
Reboot and see if all is well
In case that your OS is Windows 7 (64 bit)
    1. Open windows explorer, go to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    2. Copy file "SQLite3.dll"
    3. Open new windows explorer, to to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    4. Paste file "SQLite3.dll" to the location.
    5. Reboot your computer, it should not display that message, it should be clear.
    Good Luck

I turned on iTunes Match, and subscribed; but it did not load all of my library. How can this be corrected?

iTunes Store: Subscribing to iTunes Match
After looking through the above link, and still doesn't help then try this below:
    > iTunes Content: Downloading past purchases from App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    > Non-iTunes Content: Transfer them from a different iDevice or from USB flash drive and/or external hard drive.
I don't use iTunes Match so I don't really know.
