Is this setup possible?
I have about 1.5 terrabytes of music and home movies. I want to be able to store on iTunes but i dont want it on the hard drive, is it possible to keep it on my time capsule/network drive, have it in itunes and maybe even have it backup to timecapsule/network hard drive for safe keeping. if so can someone explain.
If the drive is configured as a network drive, then Time Machine will not be able to back up the data on the drive.
Connect the drive directly to your Mac, as Niel recommends, so that Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the attached hard drive.

Is this setup possible with airport extreme?
I have airport extreme in my office, this is connected to my cable modem. I have a ethernet cable at the wall that goes to my On-Q box which is basically the point in my house where all the wires in my house run to. Here I have several other rooms wired for ethernet.
Can I plug the ethernet cable into one of the ethernet ports on the airport extreme then in my On-Q box upstairs use a switch to connect my other ethernet ports in the house?
I would think I would need a ethernet switch correct?
Will the airport extreme give out multiple ip address over one ethernet port?

At this moment using mirrored drives for operating system and 4 drives free for the cluster itself if possible with two slots open.Is it possible to create shared storage with this setup that will work with the cluster or do I need a SAN.
At least now you need to deploy a third-party software doing something similar to the picture below:
So basically you'll take a bunch of a locally attached disks and "mirror" them with a software
component. If you're already having all-SAS setup (something you really do) you can deploy
what's called "Clustered RAID Controllers" config replacing SAS HBAs you use now. See:

8i does not need SAS JBODs to create a fault tolerant config and 8e needs external enclosures.
P.S. I would not deploy any "magic hardware" as it's a vendor lock-in. You can change software vendor
easily but I'm not aware of anybody doing similar things to what LSI does.

Encrypted mailserver setup possible?
Hi,
Since some time I keep telling myself I should start to host my email myself instead of trusting a (commercial) company like gmail. So I've been thinking a lot about the required setup, but I can't figure out a good way that suits my needs/requirements.
I'm renting a small virtual server, with only 256MB ram, but that should suffice. I'm not sending/receiving thousands of emails a day. I'm sharing this server with a friend, we both have root acces. This complicates the setup somewhat .
Requirements:
- Store email encrypted on the server, a database would be nice but is certainly not a requirement.
- Only acces the encrypted mailstorage when I acces the system. The system should not contain my private key/password, so upon login it should put all the received emails into the encrypted storage.
- Web acces (squirrel/roundcube)
- Be able to search through the email
Known limits:
I'm well aware that with sharing root acces on the server I won't be able to get a system that guarantees me 100% privacy. But there are practical limits and there is some trust. For real privacy I should not trust upon the server, but use pgp. Although pgp is very good, many people i often communicate with don't know it. So please don't point this out, I know about this. The discussion is not about sharing root making it impossible to get this 100% secure, but about storing the mails encrypted and getting the best system possible for this.
The mails will be received unencrypted and should pass an anti-spam system unencrypted. Also will the mail be stored in a queue until I perform a login.
There are 3 reasons for wanting to store the mails encrypted: It will stop my co-root from simply using cat in the maildir/database, it will keep my mails save if there would be an 'intruder' on the server and it keeps the mail private if the hosting company would look into my files (or has to give access to a government/police).
I hope this is possible and some archers can help me to point to the required software . Some personal experiences with a similar setup would be great!Some more digging seems to point out there is not yet any email server supporting what we want. It seems to be the best way too do it, without to much hassle.
I hope I can find some time somewhere in the upcoming days to fiddle with it. I'll let you know if i'm getting any concrete results .

No. The Matrox MXO2 line connects one of three ways: PCIe slot in MacPro, Express34 for MacBook Pro, and Thunderbolt (additional cost for the adapter). If you have a MacPro..you put the MXO2 adapter card into one of the PCIe slots, then connect that to the MXO2 box. -
Have my exchange contacts appear on iCloud. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I can't speak for the O/P but for me, i think i'd be happy to "move" then to iCloud rather than Exchange then. This all started from the most trival of things. I wanted Suri to recognise my partner but the "Related People" fields are limited to 3 with Exchange. I need them to be iCloud contacts to get the full list including Brother, Father etc etc
I have follows online guuides to sync to the cloud but they ignore Exchange contacts. I have just tried to add the @me.com account to my Outlook but it failed (perhaps servers busy/down?)
and to answer your question this is a High end HP desktop with Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2007 SP3 connected on a gigabit lan.
I'm assuming that when i get my mobile.me account into Outlook, i can just copy/move them into there and then the sync process will work.? -

I just recently found Arch, and I love it so much I want to use it more.
I have been working on converting my media center pc's to Linux, and want some advice before moving forward. Here is what I have:
Living room (Main Media Center, 6 TB of storage, PS3)
Bedroom 1 (Media Center, Wii)
Bedroom 2 (Media Center, Xbox 360)
Bedroom 3 (Media Center)
Kitchen (Media Center)
I don't think the gaming systems matter, but wanted you to have the full picture.
What I would like to do is have a setup where the Living Room Media Center could be a media server for the other rooms, and also handle media for the TV it is connected to. Most of the movies we have are of two different formats:
VIDEO_TS folders for standard dvd's
MKV for HD movies
Is this type of setup possible with Arch, or should I use a Distro like XBMC completely?I've been using several DLNA-servers on Arch for two years now. I started out with coherence (lacks transcoding support), fuppes (lacked surround sound support), mediatomb (no srt subtitles AND surround sound together), and now I'm using pms(-svn) that does all I've ever needed.
1 small problem: since an update several weeks ago, libmediainfo is not working together anymore with pms: pms crashes on indexing with libmediainfo and sometimes on playing a movie file. On the PMS forums, there is one other user complaining about the same problem, but that's about it.
That's why I recently installed minidlna and I'm very impressed by this little program, but it doesn't play MKV or FLAC iirc. For now I've settled on PMS without libmediainfo, which means from time to time, a movie isn't played in 5.1 (whenever a movie file has two audio streams, the first one is played instead of choosing the 6 channel audio as default).
Anyway: I'd recommend a dlna-server on arch anytime. The protocol is getting more and more support - even TV's are sold with good dlna-support out of the box... If all goes well, my new house will be ready next summer and it will be dlna-powered all the way. -

HI, if I did this, then I believe that I cloud would then hold my info which I don't want. Is that the case? The reason is that I'm an old git, therefore used to not giving out info. Would I be right?

I'm trying to find out how to export my apple contacts to the Salesforce software and they need to be in a csv format and I don't know if this is possible and how to do it if it is?
I think there are third-party programs which will do that, but you can also do it with Automator:

The file or clipboard contents will be in Tab Separated vars, so you'll have to open with a spreadsheet program and save as Comma Separated Vars format. -
New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes? I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.
I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion. -
MacBook Pro battery had accumulated more than a 1000 charges, and stopped functioning unexpectedly. Went and got the battery replaced. Just saw that SMC Firmware 1.6 update deals with this. Possible to get my money back?
The firmware update corrects an error that may occur, however the techs would have checked the condition of the battery prior to installing a new one. If the battery was questionable, the firmware update was really not too important.
You can check the battery condition by going to the apple, left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and see what it says about Cycle Count, Condition, Capacity: Condition anything but Normal needs to be checked and may need to be replaced.
The cycle count of 1,000 charge cycles is the typical life of a Lithium-Ion battery, the point at which the capacity drops to 80% of the as built capacity. -
Since years, my wife and I are sharing one Apple computer. On this, we both have an individual user account. Each of us has an own iTunes Account and an own individual media library. Each of us is using an own individual iPhone, which we frequently update with our iTunes Accounts. We have had this setup for years. It was convenient, reliable and user friendly, since we both could download what we wanted, create playlists, etc. without impact on the other. Exactly this convenience has made me and my wife real Apple fans, so that we also wanted to convince our daughter to move from Android and PC to our easier Apple setup.
Since a few weeks, this setup does not work anymore. From Apple Support (online chat on Apple.at) I was not told that this is not supported any more. Every computer is only allowed to be connected to one iTunes account. From one perspective (sharing music across other users as an act or media piracy, etc.) I can somehow understand this. However, since we are using different user accounts on this computer, I do not have access to other user´s iTunes media and could not play, download or copy it. So what is the point in this?
This now means, that my wife and I are only allowed to download individually purchased music with our personal iTunes accounts only with an interval of 90 days, so every on of us 2 times a year!
Was I incorrectly informed by the Apple support? If so, how can I solve the problem? Or is this really a new policy by Apple? If so, what is the reason? Am I expected to purchase a Mac for my wife, my daughter, myslef and for the three smaller kids to follow soon?Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes. -
I Have an older Snow Airport Base that I gave to my brother to use in his apartment. It is connected to a cable router. I have a network established but it is not secure. How do I password protect this network? There is no computer in this setup, only an iPad. Thanks!
If this base station is actually the "snow" then you will need a Mac or PC that can run a version of the AirPort Utility that can administer this "very old" 802.11b base station. You won't be able to do so with an iOS device or Mac running Lion or newer OS.

How can i see when someone has accessed my call/text log. (This is possible on google/gmail) I have been informed that someone has accessed my activity log and is giving my information to a third party. I believe it is a service tech, but I am not interested in persuing that further. I just need to see when my account has been accessed if possible.
