Is this the best place to report bugs in the utilities, or is there another?

Over the last several days with my new T61P I've encountered a fairly wide variety of crashing-severity bugs in the various ThinkVantage utils, some of them reported here, but in general they've been met with zero response.  Is this purely a user-to-user forum or are there Lenovo engineers lurking here and paying attention?  I don't really care if I get a direct response as long as there's some chance that the things we're reporting here will actually be investigated...

Yes, some Lenovo employees do read and post to this forum.  Mark is quite active, and several others post as well.  In addition, there are lurkers who just read without making public comments although sometimes they ask the mod team to either gather more information or pass along advice.
However, here are the expectations of their participation from the Welcome message:
These communities have been created to provide a high quality atmosphere in which users of Lenovo products and services may share experiences and expertise. While members from Lenovo may participate at intervals to engage in the discussions and offer advice and suggestions, this forum is not designed as a dedicated and staffed support channel.
The bottom line is there's no guarantee that you will get an answer to a question here directly from Lenovo.
On the other hand, you just might!  ;-)

  • Wdfdevice.h is missing some wpp annotations. Where is the best place to report this?

I am trying to use the WPP enum annotations in wdfdevice.h but found that many of the enums that are declared with CUSTOM_TYPE in wdftraceenums.h are not annotated with "begin_wpp enum" so the WPP generation step fails.  I'm actually
building with WDK 1.9 but i checked the include files in 1.11 and 1.13 and they have the same issue.
The following enums are not annotated in wdfdevice.h but listed in wdftraceenums.h:
    WDF_STATE_NOTIFICATION_TYPE
    WDF_POWER_POLICY_S0_IDLE_CAPABILITIES
    WDF_POWER_POLICY_S0_IDLE_USER_CONTROL
    WDF_POWER_POLICY_IDLE_TIMEOUT_CONSTANTS
    WDF_POWER_POLICY_SX_WAKE_USER_CONTROL
    WDF_POWER_DEVICE_STATE
    WDF_DISPATCH_IRP_TO_IO_QUEUE_FLAGS
    WDF_SPECIAL_FILE_TYPE
    WDF_DEVICE_IO_TYPE
    WDF_FILEOBJECT_CLASS
    WDF_DEVICE_FAILED_ACTION
    WDF_RELEASE_HARDWARE_ORDER_ON_FAILURE
    WDF_REQUEST_TYPE WDF_REQUEST_TYPE
    WDF_POWER_POLICY_IDLE_TIMEOUT_TYPE
    WDF_REMOVE_LOCK_OPTIONS_FLAGS
Where is the "right" place to report this to MSFT?

You are completely correct, It seems the CUSTOM_TYPE declarations in wdftraceenum.h are enough. The compile error I got was because I left a commented out line as one of the parameters to my TraceEvents call which apparently the preprocessor didn't like.

  • When group-working from SAN, where is the best place to store Cache Files, the Cache Database, and render files?

I have a small post production house, and we are spinning up into editing our first series. We're all working from a SAN, and sharing projects and sequences via the Media Browser. It's working great so far, but we've been having issues (could be user error) with trying to figure out where best to store the Media Cache database, the cache files, and the preview files so when a project is moved from one machine to another, it doesn't constantly have to re-conform all of the media in the project.
We have a very large master project, as this is a documentary style show, so there are hours and hours of clips.
When I open a project on a new or different machine it has to conform EVERYTHING in the project again.
Where should I store all these conform and cache files so that new people can get started working without having a machine literally be unusable until the conform process finishes?
    Thanks!

    Hi Jon,
I have a small post production house, and we are spinning up into editing our first series. We're all working from a SAN, and sharing projects and sequences via the Media Browser.
Glad it is working for you. Just to let you know, this workflow is not officially supported so your mileage may vary based on the kind of system you're working with. There are a lot of variations to the quality of these kinds of systems. Some are turn key, some home built - so I think you understand.
It's working great so far, but we've been having issues (could be user error) with trying to figure out where best to store the Media Cache database, the cache files, and the preview files so when a project is moved from one machine to another, it doesn't constantly have to re-conform all of the media in the project.
While it's possible to have the cache files (and the database) in a central location (I only know of one place that pulls that off, and it's a very, very large place), the systems that have this data stored locally are far more reliable. You can work around all the reconfirming by avoiding moving the project data around. You really don't need to move the project around from place to place. Have one computer as the "hub" for inputting data from other workstations. Wouldn't that work?
When I open a project on a new or different machine it has to conform EVERYTHING in the project again.
Can't you just have the master project on one machine and work on shorter sequences of your doc on the other machines? When done, just import to the master machine.
Where should I store all these conform and cache files so that new people can get started working without having a machine literally be unusable until the conform process finishes?
Premiere Pro simply must have those cache files in order to work. Sorry, there's no way around this problem unless you change your workflow.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • What is the best place to post question regarding the mac app store?

    Hi
I am creating a game that i want to publish it in the mac app store after it is done, but i don't know what are the steps of registering developers at Apple.com, how to pay, send the game to approval and getting paid. ( I am not from USA, and there is no store for my country ).
Where can i post my questions and get the right answers?

    Hi imacyh!
This Distribute Mac apps on the Mac App Store might be a good place to start.

  • Where is the best place to buy second hand iPhones?

Someone said that Melbourne had the longest turnaround times for Apple service work. Let me tell you the guys at the St Kilda Apple Service Centre turned my job around in 2 days... but my question is where is the best place to buy second hand iPhones in Melbourne?

There is no reliable place to buy any second-hand iPhone other than from someone you know personally. There is no way to know for certain that any iPhone you buy from a stranger isn't jailbroken, stolen, or reported lost and replaced (and hence probably blocked by the carrier). The only reliable place to buy an iPhone is from Apple or an authorized iPhone dealer.
This is the iMac forum, by the way.

  • Where is the best place to get support for iPhoto?

    Hello,
I have an issue that is listed here, in regards to iPhoto being very very slow, this is something that started to happen a while ago and I have been all over trying to find something to resolve this issue.
6000+ Images, it used to work fine but now it will not Quit, it just hangs. You can send some images via email then it will crash. I have tried all sorts of suggestions from various forums etc, but nothing. Clearing Cache's etc, nothing seems to help.
Is there any place I can get help from, or should I go directly to Apple for some suggestions?

    William,
You have come to the right place -iPhoto forum. It's the best place I know to get the help you need from knowledgeable iPhoto users.
When you say that iPhoto runs slow and quits, that sounds like a memory problem. How much free space do you have on your boot drive? The OS needs about by 15% free and clear disk space to use as virtual memory. An iPhoto library of 6000 can put a real drain on the system.
Apple recommends closing down other applications if you are getting sluggish response from iPhoto to free up memory.
Working in iPhoto you can also speed things up dramatically if you close all the rolls in the library source window, except the one you want to work with.
If you got the zoom set to give you big displays in that source window then minimize the zoom in the organize mode. I photo creates fasting loading thumbnails for browsing through your library. If the zoom is set all the way up, iPhoto has to load the full size file in the library for viewing in the source window. If it has to load all your photos full size in the source window you will get slow response and iPhoto is apt to quit on you

  • Where is the best place to put cfqueries?

Where is the best place to put cfqueries, in the <head> </head> or before the html tag? Thanks

So before the doctype tag? Thanks
I just doesn't really matter.  the doctype, head, body, etc only matter to the browser; the CF tags only matter to CF.  The browser doesn't see the CFML, and CF doesn't care about the mark-up one bit: it just ignores it.
The best place - as I said - is not in the same file at all.  But if you insist on slapping your business logic in with your display logic, then the only consideration is that you need to set your variables before you use them.  Other than that: it simply doesn't matter.
One consideration you might make is - even if it's all thrown into the same one file - at least separate the file itself into sections: have all your CFML code that gets your data at the top, and try to limit the CFML you have mixed in with the mark-up, eg: limit it to stuff like loops and conditionals.
But, seriously, separate your concerns.  Dan's pretty much just wrong when he said it's over-engineering. It's just sloppy to not to write tidy, well-maintained, well-organised code.

  • Challenge - Where is the best place to host reports given the following limitations?

    Hello All,
I am going to box everyone in a little bit here but where is the best place to host reports given the following restrictions:
    Cannot be within a BPF
Cannot be accessed from via the EPM folders
The crux of here is that some of our end users only want to go and run reports much like you would in a traditional BI environment. Given that BPC has no concept of a portal page for hosting such reports we need the next best thing. Currently we are posting reports to the documents folder but the downside of this is that we need a distinct copy of a report for each environment (DEV, QA, PROD) which is quite unfortunate. Coming from a traditional the seems ridiculous.
    Cheers,

We use EPM folders to save the reports.
Perhaps for your requirement, you should look to Web forms and Web reports..

  • My daughter is a college student. she needs to write and compile c programs on her mac for a class this semester. what is the best place for her to start to get the correct compiler etc. to use ? thanks

my daughter is a college student. she needs to write and compile c programs on her mac for a class this semester. what is the best place for her to start to get the correct compiler etc. to use ? thanks

If you know that you will not be asked to design GUI interfaces, and the C programming course will adhere to command line compilation environments, then get the Xcode command-line developer tools, and skip the extra complication of Xcode until you absolutely need it. Apple has kicked GNU C to the curb and is rightly so, using Clang/LLVM compiler technology.
Sign up for a free Apple Developer account using your Apple ID, and then visit the Mac Dev Center, and towards the bottom of the page, you will see additional downloads. Click on the associated, all down loads link. Know your OS X version beforehand, as the command-line tool releases are tied to general operating system versions, and the most recent Xcode version.  That said, there are currently two March 9, 2015 command-line tools for Xcode 6.2 — one for OS X 10.9 Mavericks, and the other for OS X Yosemite.

  • Where's the best place to store email templates?

    Hi all;
In a web app I store all my email templates in a files folder in the web app. Can't do that with a worker in a cloud service - no files. So where's the best place to store them? In a BLOB? And if so, is there a way to have files in my project get automatically
written to BLOB entries when I publish?
    thanks - dave
What we did for the last 6 months -
Made the world's coolest reporting & docgen system even more amazing

    Hi,
I think we could use azure blob to save files.
    >>is there a way to have files in my project get automatically written to BLOB entries when I publish?
If you choose azure cloud service, you could write the upload code at role onstart method. If you choose Azure website, please consider use azure webjob to do this, refer to

  • The best place for content server

    Hello,
We need to install content Server . SAP ECC is in Paris .
The users who will use the content server will be in New-York.
Is the best place for content server in Paris or in New-York?
The question could be : Will a document (for ex. a pdf of 100 Mb) to be checked_in the CS be first transferred from frontend to ECC and then from ECC to CS or directly from frontend to content server ?
    Thanks

    Hi Oda,
If your users are in New-York, then better to have content server there to optimize network traffic and speed. There is something called as distributed content server concept where you can have different storage areas for different geographical locations.
And as far as i know, whenever files are checked-in, they are directly stored in content server and it will not route through the ECC. Only DIR stored in the ECC will be linked to the file in the content server.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Ravi

  • Where's the Best Place....

    Hello once again,
I have yet to purchase my MBP, and I am wondering from all of your experiences, where is the best place to buy a 1gig 3rd party RAM. Paying all that money for Apple's RAM isn't that way I want to go, but if there's no recommended 3rd party companies, I may need to cough over the bucks...
    thanks,

Fair enough. I wasn't actually suggesting buying from Crucial. The best source for the 1gb Crucial was Newegg.com at $150 - but this is also for a chip that Apple are supplying as original ram so it's not a bad price. I didn't know Crucial sold Samsung - seems a bit odd as they are owned by Micron who also supply Apple as OEM. Business makes for strange bedfellows:)
OWC sell their own branded ram for $112 or so and Samsung M470T295CZ3-CE6 (as also supplied by Apple) for $170. What I was saying was that this Samsung chip,
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Samsung/53SDR2SAM1GB/
can be found for as little as $120 - so OWC are a tad expensive for this particular chip if that is the one you were thinking of buying.
It sounds like you're going for the OWC own brand, so I can't recommend a cheaper source for that and they know a thing or two about ,macs so there's no reason to not trust their judgement.
    Best of luck
    Cheers.

  • Where is the best place for suggestiong requesting features?

Where is the best place for suggesting/requesting features?
If something like this already exists, please let me know.
I often wish when I select a word to right click and choose dictionary to to find out the meaning of the word. Currently I have to copy, go to a dictionary web page, paste and search. And I spent a lot of time for that. I'm not that technically oriented to suggest how this can be achieved but just as an idea, may be Mozilla can partner with dictionary web sites by making a plug ins or include a dictionary with Firefox itself

I am sure there are Extensions that do this.
    DictionarySearch - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/68/
    Add-on search for Dictionary - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=dictionary&cat=all&lver=any&pid=1&sort=&pp=20&lup=&advanced=

  • Where is the best place to put programs to start on X/Openbox startup?

    Hi,
There are several places to put programs to startup when you start X or a WM.  I'm using Openbox and presently have placed these into my .xinitrc file, but I'm not sure this really the best place.  Openbox has a autostart file, which sorta looks like a better bet.
    Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks,
    Jon

Hadn't heard of consolekit; it's not clear to me from looking at their website what it's supposed to be offering? Maybe after it matures more, the documentation will improve, and all will become clear.
When I used Openbox, I just launched everything such as conky from the Openbox autostart file. I guess if you had a weird set up such as some of your Openbox configs sitting on unmounted partitions, their mount commands would go in .xinitrc, otherwise autostart.sh seems better.
Just IMO of course, do what you want on your own machine :-)
