Is this the right program for me?

I need a program that'll work very well with all of my audio equipment for recording. I need something that is easy to use, but still has nice results. I plan on uploading my recordings as MP3s to a musician myspace. Is this the right thing to purchase?

Jake, one man's perspective. Your mileage may vary:
I came to Logic via Garageband, and some experience with ProTools from around five or six years ago. After the usual setup headaches that, quite honestly, were more due to my inexperience than any inherent Logic lameness, I am up and running and quite happy with it.
I think I benefit from the fact that I pick up new technologies/gadgets/what have you very quickly. In addition, this being the first pro-level recording application I've worked with, I'm pretty much a blank slate -- I can't say "Man, logic f-in ***** compared to Cubase/ProTools/etc." Maybe it does; maybe it doesn't. I just have no real frame of reference, so it's all new and cool to me.
Also, I suspect my needs are fairly simple relative to the pros on this board. I do guitars/bass/ mando/vox audio, keys and drums (Addictive Drums, yeah!) software instruments, usually about 12-16 tracks. (Musically my stuff is a combo of Django Reinhardt and Black Sabbath, all those minor 6ths doncha know; I also orchestrate stuff written by a friend of mine who's a post-grunge dude from Seattle.)
I'm totally excited with the sonic possibilities Logic has offered. I love tinkering around with the different plugins/instruments etc to achieve just the right little ear tickle *******. I'm now listening to music in a different way -- and having these little "Oh, that's how Jimmy Page did it! I can do that!" moments which is a pretty awesome experience. Being able to listen to old music in new ways is always a good thing.
And seriously, for the price I am not sure you can beat it -- the basic studio environment, plus software instruments, plus loops. For a (fairly accomplished) parkin'-lot picker and DIY'er who's doing the Myspace thing, it's everything I want.
But as to Logic's industrial strength, and applicability to professional environments, I gotta defer to the pros on the board.

Is Premiere Pro CS3 the right program for me?
I am looking for a program that I can:
Import files that were recorded on a DVR (mp4 format)
Take two files placed next to each other on one screen and record a DVD
    | | | |
    | | | |
    | image one | | image two |
    | | | |

Also export the files to other file formats, AVi, MOV

    Dave,
Premiere can do a PiP, Picture in Picture (basically, your PiP is one half of the frame), BUT your MP4 source is not the best to edit, especially with PP. If you had DV-AVI files, Captured in PP from a miniDV (tape) vid-cam, it would do a great job, but so would its little brother Premiere Elements, which wants the same source files as PP.
I have not used Womble, that Jeff recommends, but think that it has PiP. Ideally, you want to keep any re-compression down to a minimum, as you are already working with compressed MPEG files, and every additional re-compression WILL cause image degredation. Depending on the CODEC used to create your MP4 files, you have probably lost a lot of info already, and when you go to MPEG-2 (DV CODEC), for DVD, you'll loose even more. About the only way that I see you keeping any quality is if your MP4's are coded for Blu-Ray, and you can find a program with Smart Render, leaving them just as they are, allowing you to edit, then burning to a BD. Lot of "if's" in that.
I'd check out Womble and see if it can do PiP and if it works with MP4. If Jeff recommended it, it's very likely to do that. Juat expect a major quality hit, because you're already compressed the heck out of the image data once, and will have to do it again.
You could convert your MP4's to DV-AVI with a 3rd party program, Import them into PP, or PE, edit and then burn to DVD - with Encore in PP, or directly from PE. See above for comments on quality hit. It's those source files that are the problem. That format is meant for distribution/viewing and not for editing. The effect, however, is easy as can be. There are many tutorials on how to do it with variations, on the Web, but nearly all NLE programs want better source material to start, if any quality is to be maintained.
I'd also post on the Premiere Elements forum, as a lot of people there work with less than ideal source files, and might know of good free, or cheap, conversion programs to use. If you have the CODEC on your machine, DigitalMedia Converter can handle the conversion for you, and do it in batch. It's cheap at ~ US$45, and can batch process, but it cannot improve the quality, or get back the data lost in the first compression - nothing can.
If this is all you want to do, with the above comments on conversion first taken seriously, Premiere Elements will cost about US$100 and do it easily.
    Sorry for the bad news,
    Hunt

  • Is this the right product for me?

    Hi All
Just considering Contribute and was wondering if this is the right product for my needs.
I've built a web site and need to add a retrofit CMS type function to some pages.
There's news, products and general page editing.
I can see News being straightforwards in Ct but not sure about the rest. It appears that an editor requires Ct whether they want to edit in a browser or not. Is this the case? Sort of defeats the purpose for browser editing doesn't it?
    Any comments are much appreciated.
    Thanks

ARD will not allow you print from your home system to your printers at work either. You could transfer the documents from your home system to your work system and then print, but you don't need ARD for that. File sharing, for transferring the documents, and the Screen Sharing built into Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 to take control of the work computer, would be all you need and wouldn't cost you anything additional.
If, however, you need the ability to "curtain" the screen at work, then you would need ARD. Another, somewhat less expensive, option would be Timbuktu.
    Regards.

  • Is Flash the right program for this animation...?

    Hi All,
Completely new to Flash, so thanks in advance for any advice.
I have to make a short animation from the point of view of travelling along a road, signs and words coming from the horizon line and passing by... also objects coming from far away and then moving 'through' them.   It is graphic based - text and line art - rather than photorealist.
Is this the sort of thing I can do in Flash or is it a combo of something else and After Effects?
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    G.

    Thanks - great news...
Having re-read my post, just to be clear the POV I mean is travelling 'into' the screen, rather than travelling across the screen [left to right for example].  I can do left to right in Powerpoint, but it is too tedious to use to give the illusion of travelling toward the horizon....
I want Flash to be the answer!
    Thanks again...

  • Is Flash the Right Program For This?

I have an animation of a product that rotates, then some parts fade to show internal gears turning, then the whole thing rotates back to the starting position. I have that animation as individual frames, and .mp4 (and .avi). I need to add call-outs that appear at certain parts of the animation to explain what is happening with the product, and also to have the animation pause at those parts, while my client explains certain things. He then needs to be able to press a play button to start the animation again. This needs to happen several times during the presentation.
He will be presenting using a Macbook Air, and will not be leaving the presentation behind.
What Adobe product is the correct one to use?Is Flash the right solution?
I was originally planning on adding the call-outs in AE, but when he asked to add the pauses, and "Play" button I wasn't sure what was best anymore. The animation is rendered in HD, and the final output needs to be HD as well.

you could do that all with flash.
you might be able to do it with premiere, too but i'm not a premiere expert,

  • Switching to a MacBook from a PC. Is this the right one for me?

I currently have an IPhone and IPad  and am looking to purchase a MacBook to complete my Apple experience!   I have always been a PC user and will continue to use one at work, but am ready to transition to a Mac for my personal use.
I currently have a Gateway MX6453 with Windows XP version 2002, which is outdated and not meeting my needs.  I do a high volume of photo's, editing, website posting-updating, etc.  It is frustrating that it is just slow and non responding.
Based on reviews and features I have narrowed down my selection to the MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display.  My ultimate question is have I selected the right model and specs based on the usage of my current PC, IPhone and IPad in addition to what my needs are today and in the future. I am not to savvy when it comes to GB, processor speeds, memory, etc so I am just going to list what specs my systems currently have and what is being used.  In addition to what I plan to do with the MacBook.
Current PC: (I think I have this listed correctly)
    Gateway MX6453
    Windows XP Version 2002
    Storage Size: 1.6 GB
    HD RPM 5400
    Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz
    Ram: 1.87 GB
    Bus Speed: 1600 MHz
C Drive total 14.2 GB   Free 57.5 GB (I may have written this wrong)
    Local 6.82 Free 2.79
    IPhone:
    13.3 GB - Used 12.2. (Photos-Camera Roll take up 6.6 GB)
    iPad:
    13.6 GB - Used 12.3
What I want to use MacBook for:
60% photos, 25% videos and 15% documents (word, excel, pdf's etc)
    Photos and video editing
Website and Facebook management- uploading content, pictures, etc.
    Surfing internet
This is what I am thinking of buying:
    13-inch: 2.4GHz
    with Retina display
    Specifications
    2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)2
    $1,499.00

I you are going to use a lot of photos and videos you would be better off getting more storage than the 256 GB...the 512 GB would be smarter to get.

  • Is this the right forum for this? Using a foot pedal to control apps?

My girlfriend is doing medical transcription - she listens to audio and she types. People who do this, often use a footpedal to play, pause, rewind, etc. while transcribing. I'm hoping to set her up on the Mac to do this, there are pedals which are Mac compatible, but I don't know what their limitations are, or what is possible.
I found some typical USB pedals, examples here:
    http://www.altoedge.com/pedals/
...and I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck using them? Can they be configured to control certain menu functions in any application? such as using the keyboard shortcuts in the System Preferences to control certain commands in other applications? I'm thinking that I could make great use of a pedal like this to control any audio player - iTunes, Garage Band, or a 3rd party app I bought and love, "The Amazing Slow-Downer" so that I can use this to practice with the guitar, playing along with recordings, similar to how she would do the exact same thing while listening to recordings and typing.
I hope this is the right forum to bring this up. I don't have the pedal, I'm thinking of getting one, but I was hoping to get input from someone before springing for one. Thanks!!

Well, this took me a while to get solved, but it is indeed solved.
I tried USB Overdrive and it could, and perhaps should work, but apparently it will not. When adding a device, it seems that USB Overdrive is not set up to handle any input device that does not register itself as either a Mouse or a Joystick. The VEC USB Footpedal that I'm using is "Device type: Other".
So, I went for Quickeys. And Quickeys can do it all. It did recognize the device, I was able to assign it to the scope of the particular audio playback app I wanted to use (Amazing Slow Downer OS X - which is truly amazing. Any musicians reading this who are looking for a way to learn pieces by ear, this does it better than anything else I've seen yet).
I created a shortcut in Quickeys for the ASD app; added the middle button of the foot pedal as the trigger; set one step, entering 'space bar' as the step (which toggles playback, similar to many audio players).
    It all worked.
Quickeys is very confusing and seemingly featured with an endless array of options. Enter at your own risk. Ask me for help. This was the only way to get it done that I could find. I did write to the author of USB Overdrive asking him to please support additional devices as I did find some traction from gamers who like to use a foot pedal in addition to other input devices. There was a Windows-only management utility for the foot pedal that was intended for custom input, assigning the buttons to any keyboard input or mouse click event. It would be nice to have a simple and easy to use utility like this. But, Quickeys did do the job.
Thanks for your help, you guys!!!

  • Hi, is this the right product for enabling flash contents? I need support for my Harvard e-learnings pls.  After downloading Presenter, I get an error message 'Not a valid presenter' when I add the Harvard url.  Need help.

    Hi
Is there anothe product for enabling flash content.

    Pallavi,
Adobe Presenter is a plug-in application to MS PowerPoint that allows you to add video, audio, Flash and quiz content in to a presentation and then author it out as a Flash based presentation that can the be delivered to others via the web. You are asking about enabling Flash content. In what browser/application are you needing to enable Flash Content?
The 'Not a valid presenter' message is most likely due to you not have the rights to author content to Harvard's e-learning system, but without knowing if the URL is for a Connect account or some other e-learning platform, it's hard to give any useful insight.

  • Is iM the right program for me to use?

I am jumping into the world of video blogging or as the macworld calls it: video podcasting. I have never done anything video before. At first I was thinking iMovie will be the program I need. But the more I read about it, the more I feel that iMovie is not for me. Am I right?
I need a program that can create a film:
    1. that is able to help me cut videos coming from my iSight webcam, and can separate audio from video.
    2. that can also do the same for video from my digital cam, (soon to be Casio Exilim Z70) ... I don't care if I need to convert formats, as long as it is doable without much loss in quality
    3. that can then take this video and save it in a format usable for a podcast and can then be used on YouTube or a personal site.
The more I look into iMovie, the more I see a tool built for home videos, and the idea of creating files that are then recorded back to the tapes. What I need is a program that can create short digital films in resolution such as 640x400 that can be used online. Could iMovie be this program? Do I need any additional programs?

"lossy" means: you lose pic quality... stutter, artifacts, strange colors...
you don't need to spend 500$, the next garagesale probably offers an old one for 75$ ...
how they do it? ask them, not me, me no kid, me no blogger ...
to get a little ... "old man philosophical":
the claim is: cheap/free, fast, easy ...
the truth is: if you have no skills & talent, you have to pay others to help you..
iM helps you - within its limits; using it outside these specs, makes it neccessairy to understand underlying techniqués and methods, to find workarounds .. if you don't want to spend time & sweat ... go back to field "start"..
iM is made for miniDV camcorders, if you prefer to use other devices, use the software included with such devices; if the included software isn't Mac-compliant, get another computer... - that easy.-
I've seen youtube-uploads from mobile phones.. ok.-
    not my cup of tea.

  • Is Dreamweaver the right program for me?

I'd like to make a simple site for our businses.  Pictures, text only.  This will be easy with dreamweaver?  No background in HTML but plenty way back in the day with Basic programming.
    Thanks for any input.

Honestly, DW is probably overkill for you at this point, and does require a basic working knowledge of HTML and CSS. Do you already have a site hosted? Most hosts provide one or two online site creation tools - usually at little or no extra cost. They won't give you the flexibility that comes with DW, but don't require html/css skills.

  • Is AE the right program for a sports show?

I am trying to do the sports scores of a baseball game (pre-recorded).  I would like to use AE.
I am creating a "score bar" at the top of the screen in photoshop.  My plan is to import that graphic into AE and populate the fields with text and numbers as needed.
Can anyone recommend a way to do this correctly and/or efficiently?  My fear is that I will need to create tons of layers and it will quickly become VERY confusing.
    Thank you!

    RudyShalamar wrote:

No, not really. The thing is that you need to automate, just like you would with a realtime on-air graphics system, which can be done using expressions and scripts. E.g. for listing players, you'd simply have a an invisible text layer somewhere with the names all typed out and then by ways of an expression slider, you coud pull those names based on their numerical index in a list and have them displayed inside your name box. Similar approaches would easily work for most other elements. If you get my meaning: The magic happens all long before you actualyl animate anything. It's much more important to think about the structure of the project and "templateize" wherever possible. This of course also includes more conventional things like considering the nesting relationships of comps and sub-comps, parenting of elements and other stuff you can do without knowing a shred of code.
