One way of doing this is to write a PL/SQL procedure that uses UTL_FILE to read the file and DBMS_OUTPUT to display the contents to the users.

  • What is the future for Forms/Reports

    Hi, Everyone,
We have been using Forms/Reports as our
    client/server applications for 3+ years.
recently I heard a lot of noises talking
about other Oracle tools: like Oracle Portal,
Oracle Jdeveloper, it seems Oracle has put more emphasis and resources on these new tools instead of the old and proven
    Developer. My questions are:
    1. Is Oracle Developer still important to Oracle ( i.e. Has Oracle put enough
resources for the new Developer version)?
    2. Anybody heard anything about the next
version of Oracle Developer ( like Forms 7),
    new features?
    Thanks a lot

On the REPORTS "discussions board" a member of the Oracle Reports Team has mentioned recently that in the midd of 2001 there will be a new version of Reports called Reports 9i. If you have time you can find there this sentence.

  • Is this the best place to report bugs in the utilities, or is there another?

Over the last several days with my new T61P I've encountered a fairly wide variety of crashing-severity bugs in the various ThinkVantage utils, some of them reported here, but in general they've been met with zero response.  Is this purely a user-to-user forum or are there Lenovo engineers lurking here and paying attention?  I don't really care if I get a direct response as long as there's some chance that the things we're reporting here will actually be investigated...

Yes, some Lenovo employees do read and post to this forum.  Mark is quite active, and several others post as well.  In addition, there are lurkers who just read without making public comments although sometimes they ask the mod team to either gather more information or pass along advice.
However, here are the expectations of their participation from the Welcome message:
These communities have been created to provide a high quality atmosphere in which users of Lenovo products and services may share experiences and expertise. While members from Lenovo may participate at intervals to engage in the discussions and offer advice and suggestions, this forum is not designed as a dedicated and staffed support channel.
The bottom line is there's no guarantee that you will get an answer to a question here directly from Lenovo.
On the other hand, you just might!  ;-)

  • Where are the Physical Files of Portal App (Forms,Reports, etc)

    Hi..
We are developing our portal using Oracle Portal..
We use the Portal form, report, link, url, dynamic page etc in our development.
    The case is,
Our QA want to restrict the access to the file (version control).
So, they want to do a backup/copy of the development files (form, report, dynamic page etc..) and if there are changes to the portal, they want to use the backup as the development files.
    The problem is,
we not sure where the files are..
We don't know where the forms, report, dynamic page are restored and what are they (.jsp?.cvf?.java?.fmb?.rdf?)
    Can anybody help?
p/s Fyi,we also use jsp..so, we can see the physical files..e.g. index.jsp,login.jsp....but for the portal form, report, link????Where are their physical files?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Portal Application components do not have any physical files. It is available as a package in the database. You can see it in the manage component screen. Clicking on the package body link will show you the whole package. You can copy this into a .SQL file and compile it later whenever you want, in the schema where the application is built.
    Hope that helps.

  • How long Oracle plans to support Forms/Reports 6i ?

    Hello dear Oracle Forms users/developers,
The "Oracle Forms: Features Obsolescence for Release 9i", which I downloaded from OTN, clearly indicates that the client-server runtime will be obsolete in 9i, and (quote) "users who currently deploy their application in a client-server environment and who wish to upgrade to 9i will have to Web-deploy their application as part of the upgrade process" (page 3). It also indicates that Oracle Graphics will not be shipped with Forms 9i. If someone needs Graphics, then Graphics 6i (not 9i) need to be installed into a separate Oracle_Home...
I have been trying to convince some Oracle product managers for years to continue supporting the runtime environment. Oracle always refused to include the "runtime only" installation option for any flavor of unix (eventhough it was available for windows).
The above news (of the fading away of client-server runtime option) really did upset me.
We have been developing applications with Oracle Forms/Reports/Graphics for the client-server environment as the database frontend to different simulation models. Our forms includes buttons that allows the end-users to download/upload ascii files to the file system/database. We and our customers (including the international users) are very happy with the client-server runtime option and don't want to use the forms server (or the iAS) just to be able to run these complex forms/reports/graphics applications.
Oracle keeps telling people that it will be cheaper to move to iAS and serve the forms via iAS forms services. For small size client-server applications this is absolutely not true. We are an Oracle partner and I have discussed the licensing issues with them and am aware of the deploying costs. Let me tell you couple of things:
    1. Oracle forms/reports services included only in the enterprise version of 9iAS, not the standard version.
    2. If the end-user is licensed for Oracle database server and has a copy of Forms/Reports Developer 6i, then they can run the client-server application without any extra license (number of users does not apply in this case).
    3. Forms/Reports Developer 6i is not a separate product and could be obtained by purchasing iDS (internet Developer Suite) or iAS EE license. iDS is a windows only product and includes designer 6i, Jdeveloper additional to the forms/reports developer 6i. Someone might say, "the end-user might not need all the extra just to be able to run your forms". Answer to that is the cost of purchasing a 2 years license for iDS is almost equal or cheaper than the cost of 2 years named user license (based on the fact that 9iAS EE has a 10 named user minimum requirement). And the end-user can install only the forms/reports part of iDS (given the fact that forms/reports 6i is available for different platforms including solaris - does not have to be windows).
    4. This information if from the Oracle Partnership and any Oracle employee which doubts about it should talk to them to verify.
    Here are my questions:
    ========================
Given all these FACTS (our satisfaction level with the client-server environment with Forms/Reports Developer 6i and the licensing information) I would like to ask to those Oracle employees (or personnel) how they justified the termination of the client-server runtime in Forms 9i?
If the Forms/Reports Developer 6i will be the only (and the last) version that supports client-server runtime environment, how long Oracle is going to support it?
I need to know to decide if we should use the forms/reports in our future projects or not.
Thank you (for reading all this crap) and best regards.
    Zafer AKTAN
    Oracle DBA/Developer

    Question 1
I would like to ask to those Oracle employees (or personnel) how they justified the termination of the client-server runtime in Forms 9i?
This descicion was made from feedback from our customers. Feedback from the Forms Customer Advisory Board and the Oracle Developer Tools Group (ODTUG) indicated that they are 1)in the process of moving their client-server applications to the web, 2)have already moved to the web, 3)are looking at web stategies and 4)this is also the direction that Oracle Applications division is taking.
It is proven that while liscencing for the web may not be cheaper in itself, the total cost of ownership is cheaper with web deployment once you figure in the ease of maintanence, deployment, and configuration.
    Question 2
If the Forms/Reports Developer 6i will be the only (and the last) version that supports client-server runtime environment, how long Oracle is going to support it?
Yes, Forms 6i is the last version to support client-server runtime. 6i will be patched through 2006 with extended support through 2008.

  • Oracle 10.2.0.3 with Developer 2000 (Form/Report 6i)

    Hi Experts
we are using Oracle 9i database and Developer 2000(6i) Last few years. Now I want to replace 9i database with Oracle 10.2.0.3 , in this scenario can Oracle database 10.2 will work with 6i form/report.
what I did. I installed Oracle 10g (10.2) and Developer 2000(6i) on Windows XP and restored data backup. on this machine software working. Now I want to ask how can I run this software on Clients (Windows XP).
My past practice was I used to installed oracle 9i database client with Developer 2000.
now in current scenario what Should I do. because there is no any client installation available on Oracle database 10.2.
how to manage connection client with server (windows Xp).

now in current scenario what Should I do. because there is no any client installation available on Oracle database 10.2.Well First ORACLE 10g Database will work with developer 2000 , But to get oracle client software you have to Raise SR On http://support.oracle.com
    Otherwise
You need to upgrade to 11.2.0.2 as i think its not supported with developer 2000 , So you have to upgrade the whole Environment Forms/reports 10g and Database 11g

To create an executable you will need to generate the form and report. CTRL +T does this. First compile and then control T and you'll be ready to go.

  • Why is Forms/Reports 6i not available as a stand alone product?

Mr. Regis Louis (Senior Group Manager/Oracle Forms Product Management),
thank you for your posting to my original question/suggestion. Unfortunately, I can not say that it was an answer to my original question (or suggestion). Therefore I am opening a new thread as you suggested.
    Here it goes:
I know that you are not going to change your strategy for the new product/s (9iDS and 9iAS). My question or suggestion was simply for the forms/reports developer 6i and marketing it as a separate product. By "marketing" I meant that making the forms/reports developer 6i easier to obtain and deploy for the end users (ESPECIALLY from the licensing point of view). You did NOT answer/mention any of the licensing issues/difficulties. Could you please answer the following questions:
    1. Can we tell our customers to download form/reports developer 6i from OTN?
    2. I was told by Oracle Partnership that our customers need to obtain an iDS license for forms/reports developer 6i to be able to run our client/server application which is developed by using forms/reports developer 6i. If the customers do NOT need other tools/programs that iDS license covers, why not making
forms/reports developer 6i a separate product (like JDeveloper 9i) so that the customers will pay ONLY for the forms/reports developer 6i? Why not paying $995 (like JDeveloper 9i) versus $5000 (for iDS license)?
    3. Why not having a freely downloadable RUNTIME ONLY option (via OTN) - which will eliminate the licensing problems given that the we (the developers) are properly licensed for the forms/reports developer 6i?
I hope you will answer these questions without feeling that you should justify your decision for 9iDS and 9iAS combination. Let me emphasize again here, I am not interested in 9iDS - this is a for 6i only.
If you can not answer any licensing related questions, could you please forward it to the proper people at Oracle. There must be someone at Oracle who can say "yes we can do this or no we do not want to do it." Licensing for forms/reports developer 6i is a total mess and I want someone to fix it. I don't care about 9iDS and your push for 9iAS. This is for 6i ONLY.
    Best regards

    Zaffer,
Thank you to have created this new thread to address this specific question.
    1. Can we tell our customers to download form/reports developer 6i from OTN? Yes, You can tell your customers to download the software from OTN, as long as they accept the OTN Licence terms.
    2. I was told by Oracle Partnership that our customers need to obtain an iDS license for forms/reports
developer 6i to be able to run our client/server application which is developed by using forms/reports
developer 6i. If the customers do NOT need other tools/programs that iDS license covers, why not making
forms/reports developer 6i a separate product (like JDeveloper 9i) so that the customers will pay ONLY for
the forms/reports developer 6i? Why not paying $995 (like JDeveloper 9i) versus $5000 (for iDS license)? The Forms/Reports runtime Client/Server is free. If your customers are only using the Client/Server runtime, there is no need to purchase iDS.
    3. Why not having a freely downloadable RUNTIME ONLY option (via OTN) - which will eliminate the licensing > problems given that the we (the developers) are properly licensed for the forms/reports developer 6i? When installing Forms/Reports 6i downloaded from OTN, you already have the option, when doing a custom install, to install the client/server runtime only. As I mention in the previous point, the deployment with Forms/reports 6i in client/server is already free.
I hope this answers your question.
    Thank you for your feedback.

  • From Forms Product Management - New Forms/Reports install option

Oracle Product Management are pleased to announce the release of Forms/Reports Services only download and install option of Oracle Application Server 10g.
This provides an option to the EE to install those components related only to running Forms and Reports.
To download please go to http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/forms/ and please feel free to post any comments.

    Forms Product Management

I did create a posting on OTN almost a year ago asking if/when 9iAS light version (forms/reports/graphs only) will be available at a reduced cost.
Oracle now announced (and also proved my claims that it was not a technical but marketing decision not to make forms/reports part of iAS a separate product) the separate download/install option for forms/reports services.
My original posting attracked more than 100 folks (including Shay, Frank and Grant) but was not fruitful to convince Oracle to make forms/reports services a separate product targeted for the small companies, who might not need/use the rest of the 9iAS framework. I believe, seeing one side of the coin and enforcing your opinion by ignoring the cry of many others (including many ODTUG members) is not a wise solution for your existing small business and niche market (using Oracle db and tools for very specific purposes such as simulations, etc on intranets - and operating under strict security protocols not to open up to internet) customers.
Grant and Shay repeatedly wrote on this forum and presented via whitepapers, etc. that forms/reports services are not fading away and it is a complementary solution to JDeveloper and emphasized that JDeveloper is not the replacement of forms/reports services. This news was very good for existing forms/reports developers.
Given that forms/reports services is now separately available, why not making Forms/Reports Designer and Forms/Reports services (only) part of iAS a separate product? as Oracle did the very same with JDeveloper?

  • Is this the "Pink Panther"?

I've had a brand new 23" Cinema Display for a week now.
However the light greys and some light graphites display as a light pink-ish color.
This makes white text on light grey web pages especially hard on the eyes.
A SN check revealed that this display was made in late August 2006.
Neither my 20" cinema display or my MacBook Pro have this problem.
Is this the pink panther problem reported here or is there some adjustment that can fix this.

    G5 Desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   23" Cinema Display

As mentioned earlier, the best solution is a colorimeter/spectrophotometer, the more color critical you are, the more you should probably opt for a hardware device. Of course it doesn't cost you anything to use Apples built-in calibration tool. If you spend a good bit of time in Photoshop, I suggest going with the hardware device. After profiling make sure you don't change the brightness. If the brightness is altered after profiling, the unit should be re-profiled. You should also do the profile in the ambient light you expect to be using the display under.
Because the characteristics of monitors change over time, they should be profiled at somewhat regular intervals, the hardware profiling device, in addition to being accurate, is consistently repeatable, profiling with your eyes you just can't get that accuracy & repeatability.
If you decide to get a hardware device, take a look at the EyeOne Display 2 by GretagMacbeth. Monaco's OPTIX is a good colorimeter but it might be getting harder to find one since Monaco was bought by GretagMacbeth, and future support might be an uncertainty.
Even if the 23's Pink Panther issue didn't exist, monitors should still be profiled. You might want to look into Color Management if you'll be using ICC aware applications like Photoshop or working with others that do.
If the unit is new, I'm sure you have options to return it if it is a big enough issue for you.

  • Porting Forms/Reports when migrating Oracle 9i DB from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3

    Hi,
Looking for advice on how to port Oracle Forms/Reports modules when moving our Oracle 9i database from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3 platform. Details are as below:
Oracle Forms and Reports v6i (There is no version upgrade in Forms & Reports)
Database is Oracle 9i (No upgrade in database)
There is upgrade in hardware only : from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3
The application is having some 8000 forms/reports modules
Do we need to recompile the forms/reports after porting the 9i database to AIX 5.3 ?
Any direction would be appreciated .. Thanks !!
    Regards,

    Hi,
Thanks for the response, we are going to recompile the Forms/Reports in the new environemnt.
Just wondering how much time it may take to recompile all the 8000 odd forms/reports modules.. ? Will 10 seconds per form/report module be safe enough for the compilation ? Because in a batch file every time it is going to connect to the database while compiling a module, I am assumming it may take some 5 seconds to 10 seconds for the compilation. Thanks for the help again.
