I guess in theory there could be an application that triangulates your position using the masts. This could be used by police etc to get a fix on where you are
This is already routinely done. Part of the evidence against the Soham murderer was records of the location of his phone that proved he was in his house at the time of the murders.
There are even companies that want to make this feature available to parents for tracking their kids.
It's also pretty accurate: the same method was used by the Gestapo to locate allied spies broadcasting inside occupied europe during WWII and they were able to locate the room the spies were broadcasting from.
Simply locating the phone doesn't require software on the phone, though, you'd only need that if you were going to use the phone as a GPS-like device.Message Edited by patc on 01-Feb-2007

Locating the spies took many months, it involved adjusting radio masts to get the best signal from one high point, going to another high point and doing the same until the had a general fix of where they were. Then I'm afraid it was house to house search time. It is basically the same principle with masts and with more masts about I'm guessing they could get it quite accurate. Probably within so many meters. Doubt it could locate to a room or anything.

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

How can I find what apple ID I used to register my iMac when I first booted up? I am being told that by using this ID I will be able to go on to the App store and down load iPhoto at no cost. Is this true? My iMac does not have iPhoto resident on it now and I only purchased my new iMac in December 2012
Thanks....Launch Keychain Access and click on Login in the left hand pane and then on Passwords. Next do search for Apple in the search field at the top and click on Apple ID Authenicication in the list that comes up. That will give you the ID no. and password.

Have been told if you use the same itunes account on two iphones, you will receive each others text messages, is this true?
you can use the same itunes id for purchases and so on, but have separate icloud id's for imessaging and all the icloud stuff. it's not preferable, but it isn't a problem either.

As I said above, I want to view my iPod screen on our new 40" Sony Internet full HD TV.
I know that you can do this via HDMI but a Sony guy said that you should be able to do this wirelessly by going through the router. Is this true and can I do this without the need for the Apple TV?
We are soon going to get the airport extreme, so will it work with that?1. Is it a smart TV?
2. If so.... Is the TV connected to the Internet?
3. If it is.... Check if your iPod and your TV share the same IP address (Wi-Fi network)
4. If they do.... Then you should go to wherever your "Other Media" tab is.
5. After that.... Search for you iPod. Because it is connected to the same network, it should recognize the device they same way AirPrint does.
6. If you happen to see this fail, then try this method:
1. Do you have a Bluetooth-enabled computer/laptop?
2. If so.... Enable the bluetooth on the computer/laptop as well as your iPod.
3. After that.... Your iPod should be actively searching and it should find the computer/laptop.
4. If it did.... Transfer the file onto Windows/Mac (preferably Mac) and find the program to open the file.
5. After doing so.... Connect your computer/laptop to the TV via HDMI Output Cable.
6. Now it should work! -
Is there a way to verify if time machine is backing up my apple mail? I was told that if I change computers, that the mail files will all be on time machine and can be easily be put on a new computer using my time machine backups. Is this true? Thanks, Dave
Having deleted some Mail messages by mistake, I have had to recover them from TM. I can tell you that the recovery of mail messages will be done at the mailbox level. In my case it was half of the messages in a mailbox. So I recovered the complete mailbox from TM. Then I copied the messages from the recovered mailbox back into the mailbox I use in Mail. I hope that helps.
Please be aware that TM is a backup application and not an archival application. What that means is that if your TM drive gets full, it will get rid of older files which could be mail messages to make space for newer backups. You might want to consider archiving your mail instead of using TM if you need to maintain your mail messages for extended periods of time.

All of my music is missing from iTunes since my last computer died and had to get a new one. How do I get that music back without having to pay for it again? I've read somewhere there is a "form to request to download iTunes purchases again", is this true?
Media should be included with the backup of the computer that all users should be creating on a regular basis as part of basic computer/data maintenance.
In the event that you do not have a backup (stop being lazy.... keep backups of YOUR data and other important files)
If you are in the US and running iTunes 10.3 or later, it is possible to redownload music via iCloud from purchased history.
If you are not in the US or for some reason cannot run iTunes 10.3 or later, contact iTunes customer support and ask very nicely for the opportunity to redownload the content. They are not required to provide this opportunity.
It is also possible to transfer content from an iDevice that was purchased via iTunes. On the new computer, sign into the iTunes account, authorize the computer, connect the device then select File > Transfer Purchases.
The simplest method of all is to transfer or copy the media (and other important files) from the old computer or the backup of the old computer. Typing "move itunes library" into the search bar here or into google will reveal step by step instructions on how to do this. -
my iOS remains the same as whats inside my iPhone I bought it 18months ago, which is version 4.2.1, I am told by an Apple shop that its too old to do a proper update, unless all my data will have to be erased !! is this true ? if so, how to get round it ? Chuck
Be sure to do a backup before updating as protection. Photos should
be synced with your computer, music should be in iTunes, documents
should be backed up on your computer as should contacts in whatever
program you use on your computer. You should already have backups
of your important information to prevent loss in case of theft, crash,
physical damage. The question is not if your hard drive will crash but
when, and you iPhone is not a backup device nor fit for the only
source of any document, picture, music, movie, contact or otherwise
irreplaceable information. -

I just downloaded Firefox 5 and it said that my Yahoo toolbar will not work with it. Is this true? If so I will not use this new version and will switch to another browser if Firefox stops supporting the Yahoo toolbar. Thank you.
Add-ons contain a range of compatible Firefox versions, and Firefox honors the listed range by disabling the add-on if you are trying to run it on an unlisted version.
I'm sure Yahoo! will update its toolbar eventually, but not every add-on maker supports beta versions of software. -
I gave my granddaughter a mini as a gift. She says she cannot text message to non Apple users. Is this true? If so, is there a work around app?
With the imessage app that is pre installed on the device it only works with idevices. But there are many free apps for texting. For example text free is a great one.

I have an older iPHone Type MB384LL probably type 1 or 2 16GB version. It was originally used in USA with an AT&T account. I am now in Bulgaria and using a Bulgarian simcard from a local company - MTel. I am told that if I update the software via iTunes the phone will be disabled as it is not using the original AT&T card (original account closed). Is this true? I know that originally all iPhones were tied to a particular service provide, but there has to be a mechanism for dealing with relocating etc.
Your phone has been hacked to make it work where you now live. Thus, updating software or restoring your phone will re-lock it to AT&T. Since AT&T will not unlock an iPhone for anyone for any reason, there is no way to get your phone officially unlocked. If you update software or restore the phone, you will have to hack it again. This will also require the last AT&T sim card that was used in the phone.
