Is time capsule fast enough to stream hd 1080p material?

I thinking about buying a time capsule 2tb. I would like to use it as server too. Is it fast enough to stream
Hd 1080p ? If it connected with gbit lan?
Thanks

It will depend on the the actual type of 1080p HD formatted files you are trying to stream. The file would have at least three parameters to consider for streaming: 1) Frame Size, 2) Frame Rate, & 3) Compression. For example, 1920 x 1080 HD @ 30 fps using DV50 compression will require approximately 43 MBps (344 Mbps).
In addition to the Ethernet connection, both the internal HDD's interface and the HDD's characteristics itself need to be taken into consideration. Using AJA System Test, I can get a consistent 8-12 MBps read data transfer rates between my 4th generation TC and my 2011 Mac mini ... which I would suspect would NOT be adequate for streaming HD content with these parameters.

can time capsule allow me to stream music from my itunes library directly to my home stereo system?  Is there anyway to access my itunes library from my tv?

Sorry, not sure if I understand what you are asking.
Are you thinking of moving your iTunes / Media Folder from your Mac to the Time Capsule?
If you do this...when...not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem....you lose everything because you have no backup for the iTunes library.
A much safer plan would be to add an external hard drive to your computer and move the iTunes library there.
Then, if you are using Time Machine for backups, it will back up both your Mac and the hard drive.  Now you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another.
In order to stream music from the iTunes library, iTunes must always be open on your computer.
Is there anyway to access my itunes library from my tv?
Yes, if your TV has an HDMI input and you have an Apple TV.

  • Will an apple time capsule have enough range for a 2 floored house?

I am willing to buy an apple time capsule of 2TB, my house has 2 floors and my purpose of buying this router is that i have a good connection downstairs. So I wanted to ask you if you know about that or your personal experience with one of these routers: will the range of this router will be enough to cover my 2 floored house?
    Thank You!

will the range of this router will be enough to cover my 2 floored house?
Questions like this always boil down to the the same answer......you will not know how the wireless device will perform in your home until your try it out there.
For that reason, you should understand the store's return policy in advance before you buy.
    As a very rough guide......
A typical wall constructed of sheetrock and 2 by 4s will absorb....on average....about 15-20% of the wireless signal.
A typical ceiling will absorb 25-35% of the signal because of its more dense construction.
So, after 3-4 walls, or a ceiling and several walls, there won't be much of the wireless signal left.
I have about a 2400 square foot home, and it takes 4 AirPort routers to deliver the performance that I need.....a fast, very reliable wireless connection anywhere in the house and out in the patio area.

  • High Definition - is 802.11N Draft standard fast enough for streaming?

My understanding, from what I've read, is that 802.11n draft standard is actually only running at 50% speed of the actual final 802.11n protocol that will be out in a couple of years.
If Itunes starts selling HD content or I import an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc to Itunes, is the 802.11n fast enough to be able to stream this content to Apple tv? Has anyone tried this?
    Thanks!

802.11n draft standard is actually only running at
50% speed of the actual final 802.11n protocol that
will be out in a couple of years.
No. No idea where you got that idea. Right now the Wi-Fi alliance is "certifying" 801.11n Draft 2.0 devices. It is called "draft" simply because it won't be formally approved until 2008, given the normal standardization schedules. Between draft and approved final there may be changes, but they are usually minor, so much so that sometimes a firmware update may do the job.
If Itunes starts selling HD content or I import an
HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc to Itunes, is the 802.11n fast
enough to be able to stream this content to Apple tv?
    Has anyone tried this?
First of all, don't expect iTunes to provide HD-DVD or Blue-Ray format files any times soon (I mean expect years before you see that). These are 1080p formats, which are NOT supported by the Apple TV. Apple TV does support content with a maximum resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, which can be considered "720p" HD content, though not at the full cable frame rate.
Yes, Apple TV can stream this content. I have converted several HD programs captured from ESPN (which broadcasts in 720p), converted them to H.264 at 1280x720x24fps using MPEGStreamClip (http://www.squared5.com/) and stream them to my AppleTV.

  • Time Capsule fast backup, SLOW internet!

I hope someone can help me with this issue...it seems like it only just started a few days ago.
So I have a 1TB time capsule and the wireless backup is really fast..like multiple MB/s.
However, the internet surfing speed is really slow. YET, downloading speeds are relatively fast. It just seems like safari, firefox, AND chrome take an abnormally long time loading webpages. Is anyone else having this problem, or am I just crazy?? :/
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks ahead!

Your not alone, there a loads of peaople out there with the same problem. I've got the same problem too. Only recently has this problem manifested itself.
There a few suggested solutions on the internet, most seem to be with adding open DNS addresses in your network config panel. This hasn't resolved my issues. Others suggest adding a linksys router between the modem and Time Capsule...but spending more money on known problem doesn't seem the way to go. Wish I could help...

  • Can't add a second computer to Time Capsule, not enough space

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule and two macs (IMac and Macbook) that I would like to back up. My IMac is backed up, but every time I try and back up the mac book, it tells me I don't have enough space. I have read about deleting individual back ups on time capsule (I have some going back to August), but I figured there has to be an easier/quicker way. What are my other options? Are there settings I can change were it will allow me to back up the macbook as well without going in and individually deleting files off the time capsule? There is only about 30 GB of info on the macbook and 100 GB of info on the Imac so I should have more than enough storage.

Time Machine will, by design, fill up all the empty space available to it before it starts deleting old backups to make room for new ones. That's most likely what's happened to you.
One option is to delete a large number of the oldest backups via the procedure in #12 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum. Note that you'll have to manually compact the sparse image to actually get the space back, as detailed in the pink box there.
The other is to erase the entire HD and let TM start over with both Macs (I'd be inclined to do the initial full backups one at a time, via Ethernet).
Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.
If you have other data there that you want to keep, you should be able to delete the sparse bundle via the Finder.

  • G4 Sawtooth fast enough for streaming audio?

I have a G4 Sawtooth (500mhz, 1Gb ram) and like to use it to host and stream audio via a quicktime player. My upload is 386kb per sec. Is this unit fast enough?
probably there are buffers in the quicktime player or other if it's slow?

I can't find any numbers, but I can't imagine that's not fast enough. I didn't stream, but via Airport played several songs stored on another Mac using QT Player.

  • Is my Time Capsule a poor media streamer?

I bought a new smart TV and my streaming of hulu and nextflix is terrible. I tested my speed and it is at 5mbps. Do you think it may be my Time Capsule?
    Denise

The only way to determine which device is the cause is to remove them or by pass them or replace them with alternatives one by one.
It could be the cause. Use ethernet to find out.. if possible that is the best. Bypass the TC and direct to the modem if you have to.
But to determine the actual cause we need a lot more info.
What broadband do you have? what modem? Is it router or bridged?
What TC.. how old, what firmware, what mode???
If you place a computer next to the TV does it get decent signal from the TC.
Sometimes it is just the difference between Apple stuff and the rest of the world stuff.
Make sure your TC is setup with SMB names.. since the rest of the world doesn't cope so well with names that are long, have spaces and strange characters like apostrophe.

  • Is time capsule faster than airport express

trying to decide if i should use TC as base station or if the existing airport express is just as good.  that way i can put TC in more remote (protected) location

The TC is faster.. gigabit ethernet where the express is 100mbit.
Also the wireless on the TC AC model is much faster.. although a Gen4 would probably only be slightly better than Express gen2.
However the slow ethernet port on the Express means it can never be used.
So overall the Gen4 (and Gen3) are faster than Gen2 Express..
Whether that all matters comes down to your network speed.. for instance if your max internet speed is 50/5 then express is perfectly capable of handling it.. If the internet is any download speed over 100mbit.. then the express is not capable of handling it.

  • New Time Capsule, Fast internet but slow on loading video?

Just install TC in ethernet connection and used the Wifi for my laptop, The problem is the slower loading of video from youtube or even @ the apple site's to my mac and even to my portables!?
I didn't have this kind of problem even before installing the TC and tried reseting my safari thinking maybe it would make it load faster. Please help!

OK I tried to separate the 5ghz and 2.4ghz names by going into wireless/wireless options and selecting the first checkbox.....didnt work. I tried using my Belkin router as a wireless access point. My iMac will connect to the Belkin and the TC but iPhone still wont connect to neither the Belkin nor the TC. I tried turning off NAT .....didnt work. I have pretty much tried every setting in Airport Utility and my iphone will not get internet. Would reverting to an old firmware version be worth a try? Is this safe to try?

  • Apple TV, Time Capsule and an old G4 MDD...

So I have a simple questions but can't find an answer elsewhere...so here goes:
I have the following devices I'm trying to get to work together:
    • 2nd Gen Apple TV
    • 1st Generation Time Capsule (802.11n version)
    • A dual 867mhz PowerPC G4 MDD (Mirror Door Drive)
    • OS X 10.5.8 (the highest I can go without Intel chip)
    • iTunes 10.3.1 (55) - Latest Version
    • Airport Card in my G4 computer (I'm sure it's not 802.11n)
What I'm trying to accomplish, but can't:
•I wanted to use the old G4 as a media server to run Apple TV on to our TV. Apple TV recognizes all of my movies and music on the G4 Tower but takes FOREVER to load anything up. It is useless to use wirelessly.
    Can I do the following:
    1. Connect  my G4 tower directly up to the Time Capsule via Ethernet and stream content to Apple TV that way? If I can cut out the slower connection from my G4 Tower to the Time Capsule, the content might load faster. Surely Ethernet would be much faster.
    Is any of this possible?
    Thanks for your help.
    Dominic

Yes I'd say that was possible, ethernet is always the preferred option, I'd only use wifi when ethernet is not practical.

  • Time Capsule and Apple TV

Question 1. I know apple tv can not directly stream from time capsule, but if I have my iTunes library stored on my time capsule can it be streamed via my MacBook pro to apple tv?
Question 2. If I connect time capsule and apple tv to my Wifi modem via Ethernet will it be the fastest option for streaming?

but if I have my iTunes library stored on my time capsule can it be streamed via my MacBook pro to apple tv?
Yes. But, if you move your iTunes library to the Time Capsule drive, have you thought about a possibly troubling fact?..... Your "original" library is now on the Time Capsule drive......and you have no backup when...not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem.
In other words, if you move the iTunes library to the Time Capsule, how will you backup that important data?
A better plan might be to add an external FireWire or USB drive and connect that directly to your MacBook Pro. Move the iTunes library to the external drive. Then Time Machine will backup your MacBook and the external drive.
Then you have "originals" on one drive....and backups on another, so your data is safe when a drive acts up.
Question 2. If I connect time capsule and apple tv to my Wifi modem via Ethernet will it be the fastest option for streaming?
Yes, probably at least 3-5 times faster than wireless.

  • Ghosting using Time Capsule

I have my current MacBook backing up automatically through time machine/time capsule but was looking to upgrade the HDD on my MacBook.
What's the easiest way to copy the entire contents of my current HD onto the new one once it's installed?
Is it possible to put the new one in the MacBook, connect to the Time Capsule and simply restore - thereby having the entire contents of the old drive copied onto the new one. Or will TC only restore to the drive the image was originally taken from?
    Any help greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    James

One more idea: if your Time Capsule has enough space, why not use a cloning utility like Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create an image of your old drive? Save this image file on your Time Capsule, replace the drive, then restore the drive from the image. As I understand it, a few files aren't backed up to the Time Capsule (like Spotlight caches) so this would perform a real clone of your drive.
Another idea is to buy a cheap enclosure for your old drive, and mount your drive inside. Then you can clone directly from your old drive to your new drive, and when you're finished, you get an external USB drive. Simply purchase a 2.5" SATA enclosure when you purchase your new drive.

  • External Harddrive and Time Capsule

    Hi All,
I am getting a G-Drive Mini from G-Technology for my MacBook Pro. My questions are:
    1) Can I use an external drive for a Time Machine Backup along with using it for downloading torrent material. (When I first plug in the drive, the Mac will prompt me to use it for a Time Machine Backup I believe);
    2) If I decide to use it for Time Machine Backup will I have problems with other formats that I would like to use it with. Really to use this expensive type of drive just for Time Machine is not maximizing the usage though. (Would buy a Time Capsule if I had too for backup material).
Hope this makes sense for answering. Tks in advance for any help in this matter.

    1) Why would I need a boot drive if I have a copy of the OS system I have purchased or have the computer backed up on a drive already?
I really only used the example of having another OS installed on the TM drive to illustrate that you can really do whatever you want with the drive, in addition to it being a TM backup drive. You don't need to have any OS installed on the TM drive, but you can if you want/need to for some reason. Most people wouldn't; it was just an example.
    2) What do you suggest is a good size drive for TM backups?
Well, at least the size of the drive in your MBP, plus whatever files you may want to store on it, plus about 50% for extra space. So, if (like me) you have a 250GB drive in your MBP, and want to store 100GB of additional files, then you should probably get a 500GB external drive. But, drives are cheap nowadays, and space tends to get cheaper the more you buy. You can get a 1.5TB to 2.0TB (1500GB or 2000GB) drive for probably less than $200 USD. That would provide you more than enough space to expand into in the future, I would think. That said, just get what you need plus a little extra.
Down the road I will definitely be purchasing a Time Capsule device (What do you suggest is a good producer and size to get?)
Time Capsule is a product that only Apple makes. It combines an external drive with a wireless router. That allows you to backup your Mac wirelessly. It also has a USB port for attaching a printer or additional storage to the network. There are currently 1TB and 2TB models. Time Capsule is a great option, because as long as you are logged onto your home wireless network, you're backed up, wirelessly! It doesn't get much easier or automatic than that.

  • Frequently changing channels with Time Capsule

Utterly stumped by this situation. In our household, we have an iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro. The Time Capsule sits on the top floor, maybe thirty feet from the iMac, but in another room; the laptops, obviously, roam the house. There is never any problem with network speed or backups with the laptops no matter where they are, but backing up the iMac is inconsistent. What I've found is that I have to change the channel on the Time Capsule each day—4, 6, and 8 work best—or else the iMac won't back up faithfully. It'll get hung up calculating changes or even find the back-up volume. Stopping the back-up once it gets hung up is a dicey venture. It's a complete crapshoot whether it'll stop. I've done all the usuals—deleting preferences, resetting the Time Capsule—but to no avail.
Any thoughts as to what might be the problem?

    Dr. Medulla wrote:
If Ethernet isn't an option for you, is there any way you can move your Time Capsule closer to the middle of the house?
No, there's only one available outlet for the modem. I might be able to move it eight feet closer, but that's about it.
Depending on the exact details of the room with the modem, you might be able to run a cable some feet from the wall outlet to the modem, then an Ethernet cable some additional feet to your Time Capsule. It might help if you could move the Time Capsule far enough to cross over a wall in the floor below.
Curious that you say that those are marginal rates as the MacBook's speeds are fine. Even the iMac runs along well—once the channel has been changed for the day.
Perhaps I overstated the case by referring to that as a very marginal value. All I know is that a signal value of -75 and a noise value of -92 to a white MacBook gave me an AirPort connection that was slower than I wanted to tolerate.
Looking at the running graph in Advanced > Wireless Clients, the Macbook has a fairly straight line, with only a couple bumps, whereas the iMac is nothing but peaks and valleys, so the iMac is definitely struggling to maintain a consistent signal.
If you turn the iMac or move it around the room does the situation change?
