Is time capsule is backing up my external drive?

I have my itunes library on an external drive connected to my time capsule via usb. When the tm is docked, i can look at the backup archive to see the files it's backing up. this does not include my itunes music folder on my external drive. In fact, I can't see that the tm is backing it up at all. the external drive isn't on the exclude list in time machine options either. How can i get time capsule to back up my internal and external drives?

I have 2 laptops being backed up to my Time Capsule.
I have my iTunes Library and my iPhoto Library on my Time Capsule.
I use Chronosync to backup my iTunes and iPhoto Libraries to an external drive.
It should have no problem doing what you want it to do.

  • Will Time Capsule also back-up an external drive?

I have a Time Capsule which I originally bought thinking it was both a back-up and extra memory device. I now also have an iomega network hard drive, and so need Time Capsule to back-up both my hard drive AND this external drive. Yet i can't seem to find how to do this in Time Machine. Can anyone help???

Time Machine can backup an external drive that is connected directly to your Mac via USB or Firewire, but it cannot backup a network drive.
If you need to backup a network drive, you might want to take a look at Chronosync. I believe that Carbon Copy Cloner now has this ability as well, but have not tried it.

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • When using Time Machine to back up to external drive, does Time Machine back up content in your Trash folder?

When using Time Machine to back up to external drive, does Time Machine back up content in your Trash folder?

Go to System Preferences (under the Apple menu) > Time Machine and click the Options button. Click the "+" button in the lower left. In the resulting dialog, check the Show invisible items checkbox. Go to your home folder and look for Trash. Click the Exclude button in the lower right.

  • How do I get Time Capsule to back up an external hard drive?

I need Time Capsule/Time Machine to back up my external hard drive. How do I do this?

The external drive is plugged into the Mac??
Just open the Time Machine preferences, Options, and include the external drive.. done!! (The menu is exclude.. so just ensure it is not excluded.. don't use no double negatives.. is grammar rule apple could learn).
You cannot backup the external drive if plugged into the TC directly.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to serve as an external drive with two different iMacs?

I want to be able to set up Time Capsule to serve as a backup drive for my iMac, as well as my wife's iMac.
So that we don't have to use two seperate back-up drives on each computer.
    Is this possible?

The following quote is from: https://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
Have multiple Mac computers in your home or office? AirPort Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. AirPort Time Capsule spares you the work. Your computers are always backed up — automatically and wirelessly.

  • How do I get time machine/time capsule to back up my external hard drive?

I have been trying to find a way to back up my external hard drive (a Hitachi G-Drive from the Apple store) with time machine and my time capsule. I left it plugged in so it was visible on my MacBook Pro when I did the initial backup yesterday, but it's not showing when I enter time machine. Anyone have any ideas?

    A few things to check.....
The external drive attached to your Mac must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Check Time Machine Options to make sure that the drive is not excluded from Time Machine backups

  • Time Capsule keeps backing up entire external HD..

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air, an external MyBook Thunderbolt Duo HDD, and a Time Capsule.
I keep my iMovie files on the external which I will add to, edit etc over time.
On the external I also have a COPY of my iPhoto and iTunes folders (approx 100GB total)(I don't use them from this drive - they are purely there as an extra copy just incase)
I have done the initial backup of my entire Macbook, and also the external HDD, which all seemed to go fine, showing 1.5TB left on TC (This matches up with what I needed to backup)
I have excluded the iMovie and iPhoto folders, located on the external, from backups, as my "working folders" are located on my Mac.
I haven't touched any of the files on the external HDD but now when TC wants to do a backup it states that the size of the backup is 300GB ! Almost the size of the initial entire backup.
Any suggestions of where i've gone wrong will be gratefully received!
I should add - the external HDD is connected directly to my Mac using Thunderbolt

same problem, but I am not running neither parallel nor entourage or similar software.
In my case the size of the repeated backup is 6 Gb.
Is there a manner to identify which files are baked up, so that I can pinpoint the "big one"?

  • Time Machine not backing up 2nd external drive, remove option grayed out

I have two external hard drives, 300gb (firewire) and 500gb (usb). Time Machine is backing up to the 300gb. In Time Machine's options, the 500gb is excluded from being backed up, and the remove option is grayed out.
The 300gb Time Machine Backup drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. The 500gb drive is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32).
I know the backup drive needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended, but will it not even back up other drives that are FAT32?

I am having a similar problem. I initially set it up 3 days ago and had it back up just the iMac to Time Capsule (about 120 GB) which it did no problem (I initially had my LaCie drive excluded). I then un-excluded my other drive, where all my photos and music reside (about 130 GB). Since then, it keeps trying to back up about 102 GB each time. Looking at the list of backups it does not appear that it has ever successfully backed up the LaCie. I am not aware of any error messages, but I have not been home much. I normally shut down the computer at night but I have been leaving it on trying to let Time Machine do its thing. All I can say is that every time I am at the computer TM is running and it always looks like it is in the middle of backing up 102 GB (usually seems to be near the beginning, never seem to see it more than halfway done). Looking at the TM panel it says the latest backup was 2 days ago. I'd appreciate any advice!

  • What is the easiest way to tell if your time capsule has backed up your hard drive, as my mac has been recalled for a replacement hard drive

Your views would be appreciatted, my imac has recently been recalled for a replacement hard drive, would it be easier just to purchase a external hard drive to be on the safe side for backing up my photos etc?
I have a 1GB time capsule but to be honest not sure how it operates it states it oldest back up is the 11th October
201GB of 998 available or would it best to buy a external hard drive and back up using this.
    thanks
    Benjoe08

    You are very wise.. !!
It can be awfully hard restoring the Mac from TM.. as many posters here have discovered.
IMHO.. for certainty.. get an external drive.. they are not expensive.. do a full backup to it.
I would even download superduper and make a clone of the existing drive and boot from it.. this means when the Mac is returned if all else fails.. you can use the external clone as a boot and have exact OS as you have right now.

  • Can Time Capsule be used as an external drive but not a router

Greetings,  I have a spare 1TB older Time Capsule that I would like to give to a friend who would like to use it as an external hard drive w/time machine.  They currently have a current iMac with Comcast internet and router which they would prefer to continue using for internet access.  My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability. Thanks for any advise.
    Scotgt Lorigan

My question is: can a time capsule be set up to be used as an external backup drive without using the router capability
    Yes
Connect the Time Capsule to the Comcast router using a wired Ethernet connection from a LAN port on the Comcast router to the WAN port on the Time Capsule and set it up to create a network.
Then, go back in using AirPort Utility and turn off the wireless function on the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule will operate as  "bridge" in this type of setup, so it will not perform as a router.

  • Using time machine to back up additional external drives

My mac mini contains a 160 gb hard drive. Aiming to keep this free, I connected a 500 gb WD mac-specific hard drive. I also use this drive when attempting to access work files on my macbook pro. When using time machine, which backs up to a 1 TB WD hard drive (also attached to the mac mini), I cannot figure out how to use time machine to back up simultaneously the contents of the native (160 gb) drive in the mac mini and the contents of the portable external drive (500 gb). *Is there any way to set time machine to accomplish this?* Please help - I really need to continually back up the contents of the portable drive as well.

carbon copy cloner will do this. you set up a scheduled job (can be daily, weekly, etc. & even every hour!) & is free to use (donations accepted).

  • Using Time Machine to back up an external drive?

I have an external HD containing my iTunes library attached to my Airport Extreme Base Station. Is it possible to use Time Machine to back up the AEBS-attached HD onto a different HD? I would connect the new HD directly to my MacBook and in an ideal situation, Time Machine would create a fresh back-up of my AEBS HD (iTunes library) every time I connected the second HD to my MacBook.
I may be making this more difficult than it needs to be. I just want to be able to back up my iTunes library to a second HD which I still have to purchase.
    Any ideas?

Yes, just be sure the drive is online and not in the exclude list. Note that TM can only backup to one designated backup drive. If you add a second drive for backup, TM cannot use it and the currently designated backup drive simultaneously.

  • Time capsule crash when i add external drive

    Hi all:
I have a time capsule that is running out of disk space. When I plug in a usb external drive, the time cap turns amber and all the wireless functions go off line.
Time capsule firm ware is up to date. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Is the drive 3 TB or less?
Is the external hard drive formatted correctly in Mac OS Exended (Journaled) or FAT32?
(Your Mac can read other formats, but the Time Capsule USB port will only read and write to the Mac format and FAT32).
If yes to both questions above, have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive?
