Is time capsule still needed if u have iCloud

Is time capsule still needed in u have iCloud

The Time Capsule is an Airport Extreme with a hard disk inside.. so it is a full router.
But I cannot answer the question.. if your netgear router is also a modem.. then the TC is not a modem and you would still need the netgear or something similar.

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

will my time capsule do the job or do i need another modem?
The Time Capsule is only a router...with a built in hard drive. It does not have a modem built in, so you will need to use a separate modem with your new calbe service.
If the cable provider offers a modem with their service it would be good idea to use that device, as you know that it will be supported by your provider in the event of any Internet connection difficulties.
If the provider does not offer a modem, I am sure that they have a list of compatible modems on their website, or check with customer support for more information.

  • Can I create separate folders to save media on my Airport Time Capsule? Issue is I have a 256GB HDD Mac Pro Retina which is almost full. TC will only take backup of my HDD. So where would I save my photos and videos from my iPhone and iPad?

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • HT1178 I have purchased a Time Capsule 2TB recently, and I have not been able to complete the initial setup.

I have recently purchased a Time Capsule 2 TB. I have connected it to my BT Infinity Hub via ehternet cable. After connection, the orange continues to flash.
The capsule shows both an IP address and a LAN IP address. It also indicates that its network is Iain's Wi-Fi Network (setup by default).
the Capsule has a couple of messages as follows:
    1. Double NAT - This Airport base station (Capsule) has a private IP address on ethernet WAN port, using NAT. It suggests changing setting from DHCP and NAT to bridge mode.
    2. Setup over WAN - This Airport base station (capsule) is setup over ethernet WAN port, which decreases network security.
I have tried a soft reset, but nothing has changed and I do not know what changes I need to make to allow the capsule to complete its setup.
I would appreciate an expert opinion on what I need to do to fix the Time Capsule setup.

Please open AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small box that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window and change the Network Mode to "Off"
Now click the Network tab at the top of the window
Make sure that the setting for Router Mode is Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update to save the settings
You should have a green light in about 30 seconds.  All is well now.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • I have had a new hard drive installed. On start up I transferred all my settings and documents from my time capsule. Once complete I have two user accounts. Mine and guest. I cannot access either. Mine says password incorrect even though its not.

I have had a new hard drive installed. On start up I transferred all my settings and documents from my time capsule. Once complete I have two user accounts. Mine and guest. I cannot access either. Mine says password incorrect even though its not. Any idea what is wrong here and how I can reset my password. I don't have a start up disc. Thanks very much

    From System Preferences/Help:
Reset your login password using your Apple ID
Before you can use your Apple ID to reset your login password, make sure that FileVault isn’t enabled on your computer.
Also make sure that an Apple ID is associated with your user account, and that an administrator has given you permission to reset your own password using an Apple ID. For more information, see this help topic:
Associate Apple IDs with your user account
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
In the login window, click the question mark in the password field, and then click the arrow in the dialog that appears.
Enter an Apple ID and password, and then click Reset Password.
I don't know if it works.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite and now my Time Capsule says it does not have enough space to complete backup, yet it has 500 GB free space?

I have just upgraded to Yosemite and now my Time Capsule says it does not have enough space to complete backup, yet it has 500 GB free space?
I am using the latest mac book pro and hacvent added anything aside from the upgraded iOS so not sure why the Time Capsule is saying that there is not enough space.
How can i fix this problem?

Time Machine has to completely index all of the old backups that are already on the Time Capsule before you can run a new backup successfully.
That process is going to take a long time......probably 6-10 hours or more if your Mac is connected to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
If the Mac connects using wireless, it may take a day or two for the process to complete depending on the speed of your connection and the amount of data that you already have on the Time Capsule.
Wait a day or two for the indexing process to complete and then try to run a new backup again.

  • I don't use my mac email.  I view my webmail thru mail though  Do I still need to move to icloud?

If I am viewing my webmail thru Mail and not using my Mac Mail acct, do I still need to move to iCloud?

iCloud is free providing you require no more than 5 GB of storage, which for a mail account only is more than ample.
You do not actually need to update from OS X 10.5.8 in order to use iCloud for mail only. You could simply migrate from your MobileMe account at Move
If you did wish to update your operating system you would need to purchase a copy of Snow Leopard on disk and install it on your computer, update it to the latest version of Snow Leopard, then purchase lion from the Mac App Store (The Mac App Store is installed when you update to OS X 10.6.8)
Whilst I am aware that you wish to read your mail through a web browser interface, there is no reason that you cannot read iCloud mail from the mail application on OS X 10.5.8.

  • I have a current 2TB Time Capsule. I would like to add more ethernet ports for needed expansion. Will an Airport Extreme conflict with the Time Capsule for needed ethernet ports and will wireless from both units conflict?

I own a current 2TB Time Capsule and I need to expand my network system to include more ethernet (wired) ports. I am considering an Airport Extreme that would give me enough wired ports. Will the wireless capabilities of both units conflict with each other? I only need one wireless network. Thank you for any help.

While you could certainly add an AirPort Extreme to provide additional Ethernet ports, you could also save about $150 by purchasing an inexpensive switch, such as one of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DGS-1005G-5-Port-Gigabit-Desktop/dp/B003X7TRWE/
    http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Unmanaged-GREENnet-Auto-Negotiation-Auto-MDIX/dp/ B001QUA6R0/
Consumer grade Ethernet switches typically come in five and eight port configurations. Just be aware that a five port switch only conveys the ability to add three additional devices. An eight port switch conveys the ability to add six additional devices.
An 8 port switch provides twice the capacity of a 5 port switch for considerably less than twice the cost. The price difference between the two is often only $10 or so.
I just checked, the 8 port version of the Trendnet switch above costs exactly $4 more.
An AirPort Extreme is a very flexible full featured wireless router, and would provide three additional LAN ports for wired devices. If all you need is a few more ports though, it's overkill.

  • I purchased a time capsule last year and we have been using for our backup of our apple devices (iMac, laptop, iPad and now 5 iPhones).  we have not used it as our router for wifi but would like to now switch to it. need directions for switching please.

i am using time capsule for backup only but would like to switch to it for our wifi.  directions on apple discuss original set up of time capsule for wi fi but not switching from existing wi fi router.  were can i get help with this?

Well, it depends on what ISP you use.
Reply back with your ISP and connection type (cable, ADSL). Also, do you use an ISP router or do you have a modem connected to a router that you provide?

  • My time capsule still functions as a wireless base station but I am now unable to find my back-up disc. find

My current time capsule 1T still works as a wireless base station to connect my remote computer to the internet yet I can't bring up my Time Capsule hard disc. I keep getting this message when I try to back up and I am unable to retrieve my backup disc storage. Is it possible for this unit to fail from the back-up disc standpoint yet the WL function continues to operate. This is the 2nd failure that I have had w/ a Time Capsule.
         Jim

The TC hard disk can fail.. they become generally unreliable at 3years but many fail well before that. If you have applecare on any computer and TC less than 3years old, check if apple might not replace it .. again.
I am not clear what the message is when the connection fails.
    Need more info.. exact error..
Does the smart test show errors in the TC for the hard disk?
What model and size hard disk is it exactly? The A model number from the base will help.
Have you reset the TC or even just rebooted it and the network.
Some apple updates are rather less than satisfactory and I have found my TM target disk offline for the first time yesterday.. for no good reason.. a simple reboot got it restarted and the Mac able to detect it again.

  • Time Capsule fix needed (2nd Generation)

I have a 2nd generation Time Capsule that suddenly died.  I thought it was on the way out as lately I was getting warnings that it wanted to essentially start my backups from scratch!!
I took the hard drive out and tested it in my Drobo and the drive still works.  I believe its the power supply and need to know:
    A): Where to but one.
B):  If the same power supply that was in there is good enough for a 2-3 TB drive instead of the 1 TB.
    Thanks for any help,

Old name condensers although they still use that name in French and other languages.. we call them capacitors now.
They are dead.. the rust on the end is leaking electrolyte.
You need to replace with high capacity low esr types.. it is most important if you want to repair to buy the right ones.
And you need 4 caps not just two.. I pointed the post out in the other thread.

  • Missing cd for time capsule and need to set up on pc

we recently moved and cannot locate the set up disc for our time capsule. We need to use it as a router now. I need to get it set up not only for my macbook but for a lenovo pc laptop as well.  How can I accomplish this??

You only need AirPort Utility installed on one computer....either a Mac or PC....to be able to administer the Time Capsule. It is not necessary to have AirPort Utility installed on every computer.
It is already on your Mac using OS X (10.6.8).
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
If you still want to install AirPort Utility on the PC anyway, post back to let us know what operating system the PC is using.....XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.

  • How do I use Back to My Mac with a new Time Capsule if I don't have a MobileMe account?

I just got a new time capsule and I'm trying to set it up so that I can remotely access the files when I'm at work/on the go etc. Now I have an iCloud account, but I don't have a MobileMe account. I do have an @me.com address because I enabled Mail thru the iCloud pref pane and I setup the @me.com email address but I'm still not able to use back to my mac.
