Is time machine what I want for backup??

I've tried several external drives for my mac and the first one crashed after a year, the second one (ClickFree Backup) doesn't work the way we'd like. It requires connection by the main computer to back up both computers which isn't how it was sold to me.
Ideally I'd like a wireless backup that can be used by both the Mac and PC in our household, and be able to access files between the two. If that can't happen (and I'm assuming it cannot), then I'd like something just for my Macbook Pro. I'd like to put all music and photos on it rather than on my hard drive, so not sure if it's okay to go with Time Machine or if Time Capsule is necessary. I use my laptop all over the house so it's only in the evenings when I dock it and would plug in to back up. So Time Machine, Time Capsule, or something else you'd recommend for backup?

You're talking about two very different things: extra space for originals vs. backups.
Time Machine is a backup app; their whole role in life is to keep extra copies of your originals, in case something awful happens to the originals. Those copies can't be used by most apps; they must be restored somewhere to be used.
You can use a Time Capsule for backups, or for originals, but it's not a good idea to try to use it for both. This is partly because Time Machine will use all the empty space available to it; and partly because Time Machine can't back up the originals that are on a network.
I use my laptop all over the house so it's only in the evenings when I dock it and would plug in to back up.
With a Time Capsule, Time Machine can make quick backups of whatever's changed every hour, via your network, as long as your Mac is awake and in range.
The closest you could get to everything you want would be to get a Time Capsule and a USB drive to connect to it. Use the TC's internal HD for your Mac's backups and the USB drive for the shared data. But you'd need some way (and some place) to back up the shared data.
The shared data on the USB drive presents another problem. Macs can't read and write to most drives formatted for a PC, and vice-versa. Both can use the +MS-DOS (FAT)+ format, but Time Machine can't back that up, even if you connect it to your Mac. There are some 3rd party apps (I think one is named MacDrive) for a PC that will read and write Mac-formatted drives, and one for Macs that will read and write NTFS (PC) formatted drives.

Time Machine stuck at "Looking for backup disk"

Running system maintenance via Onyx
Resetting PRAM
Formatting the drive and setting it up for TM backups again
The Boot Camp partition is on the same drive as OS X (on a 180GB Intel 330 series SSD). During the Windows installation I re-formatted the partition as NTFS.
If I start OS X in Safe Boot mode, TM backups work. In Safe Boot mode, the NTFS partition isn't loaded so I suspect it has something to do with this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to assume during the install setup of Windows, you deleted the partition made by Apple and created your own and formatted in NTFS. This is probably the cause as to what happened.
Try this:
1. backup anything you did in Windows 8.
2. In Boot Camp, remove the Windows Partition. Reboot when prompted.
3. Try and see if Time Machine works again.
If its working, create a bootcamp partition and re-install Windows. Do not delete the partitions that Boot Camp created. See if TM works again after that.

Can't find anything relevant googling the error message - seems to appear on damaged software install CDs so possibly the files are corrupt on my harddrive? I think .bzff file are from 'Backblaze' online backup, but given the date in the file name they have previously backed up successfully.

I installed Paragon NTFS for Mac and it started working all of a sudden.

Moved Time Machine drive - can't see backup.

I was having trouble with my Time Machine drive, which was connected by USB to my Airport Extreme. I moved the drive to a USB connector on my MacBook Pro to improve the speed, and after formatting the drive, made a complete, new backup with Time Machine, which took about 8 hours.
Then I moved the drive back to the AirPort and told Time Machine to use it for backup. Time Machine doesn't see the earlier backup (I can verify that it's there using the Finder) and is now doing another complete backup of my MBP.
What's wrong here? How can I tell Time Machine to use the backup it made yesterday instead of starting over?

Actually, Tech Support told me that they support only Apple Time Capsules connected to the Air Port Extreme. They most certainly do NOT support using Seagate drives such the ones I have been using successfully for over three years, on two MBPs.
I firmly believe (but Apple does not want to hear this) that my problem originated with the erratic WIFI connections since I upgraded to Lion, which has been discussed at length in the forums. Time Machine reported backups failing when the WIFI connection could nto be restored after waking from sleep.
My wife's MBP, running Snow Leopard, is working just fine on the same hardware.

EDIT: I tried "Inheriting" the backup that was made via the direct USB connection, but it still doesn't show up in the TM history. The tmutil program is interesting - it does distinguish between the "machine_directory" - the backups.backupdb folder that was made by the direct USB backup, and the sparse_bundle file that was created by the AirPort backup.

What to do when time machine seems stuck on "Preparing Backup"

This issue is happenning on my macbook pro, mid 2010. My drive setup is that I have a partition which I dedicated to time machine backups. The total size of my drive is 500GB, and I partitioned about 100GB for time machine. The reason for that is I only needed a few space since I setup time machine to include only the system and the apps, and NONE of the libraries such as itunes or photos. This means that the only backup will be for the system, profiles, and the app. I have been running this for a few months andhas been doing OK until up to now.
My problem is that my time machine seems to get stuck on "Preparing Backup". The latest backup was done last Nov 8, 2011, whcih is about 11 days from now. I am also aware that the time machine drive has only about 200 mb space left, but I am not worried at all because I've always TM to delete the oldest backup to free up space. My oldest backup was still Sept 8, and I'm ok if that will be deleted.
So I'd like to find out why it still stuck on "Preparing backup" ,and I am wondering if deleting a backup can solve it. Can it? what do I do to solve this?
Also, I use my computer alot , so it is basically running for about 18 hours a day, but still time machine didn't quite work well. I have tried reparing the disk using disk utility, but that didn't help.

A backup on the same drive isn't very secure -- when (not if) the HD fails, you risk losing everything.

Backing-up apps that way will also be useless in some cases. 3rd-party apps that came with their own installers put other files in other places (and sometimes "helper" apps as well). Unless you know what and where they all are, and restore them, too, the restored app won't work properly, if at all.
I think you're confusing each other with terminology. iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are NOT "Libraries", which has a specific meaning when it comes to OS X. "Libraries", in OS X normally refers to /Libraries and ~/Libraries folders. This is not where iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are stored. iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are stored within ~/Music and ~/Pictures, respectively.

Disk Utility changed a bit in Lion. When you select an entire disk, it only repairs the partition map, not all the volumes. You must repair each one separately.

Whew. This editor makes it so hard to make comments inline. The key thing when time machine seems stuck is patience. Sometimes it needs to be left to run overnight. Unfortunately, it doesn't log or report it's progress very well.
Opening Time Machine settings in Preferences plus a command like this left running in Terminal.app is how I monitor progress. And even so, there is very little logging indicating progress.
sudo tail -f /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/My\ Computer/2012-07-11-133352.inProgress/.Backup.363731632.496216.log
The parts in italics will need to be adjusted. Tab completion makes this easy, e.g type
sudo tail -f /Volumes/
and hit tab, type the first few letters of the relevant volume name, hit tab...
Also, I have a hypothesis which needs testing.
I know that Time Machine gets confused if one deletes large files from a backup - specifically, Time Machine doesn't recognize that the size of the backup has changed.
I know because this made restoring a thinned out time machine backup ("thinned out" by deleting files from within the GUI while inside the Time Machine) to a small SSD harder than it should have been. I had to restore to a big disk and then clone that volume to the SSD - even though the SSD had enough space, Time Machine didn't think so; it didn't "understand" that it had been thinned.
My hypothesis is that Time Machine also gets confused if the Time Machine partition is resized. I shrunk a Time Machine partition (no it wasn't on my main disk!) and about that time, Time Machine stopped working. After thinning the volume, it started working again.

The light on the drive blinks while it starts the back up. I can see the shared folders on the networked drive. The backup process starts but for some reason it just stops. Can anyone help?

You can't repair a network volume in Disk Utility.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

Could that read " . . . could not access . . ."? If so, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If not, or if that doesn't help, see #A1 there. Use the TM Buddy widget it details to copy and post the messages here.

You really can't.
That's not one of Apple's clearest messages; it means your backups are damaged beyond OSX's ability to repair them. See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

I keep getting this error on my new Macbook Pro w/ Retina.

Connected to a wifi network and QNAP storage system. There are 5 computers on this network, and each backs up just fine. The issue is isolated to this one machine.
This error shows up every week or so.

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
I've:
- Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
- Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
- Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input? I don't think it is on the WD side. Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive? Help!
