Is Veritas- or Sun Cluster needed for RAC in a Solaris Environment

Is a Veritas- or Sun Cluster needed for RAC in a Solaris Environment?
Does anyone know, when OCFS will be available for Solaris?

You don't need Veritas Cluster File System, but until OCFS comes out for Solaris you need to think about backups. If you've not got a backup solution that can integrate with rman for an SBT device then backups become more tricky.
If you use ASM then you can take a backup to a "cluster filesystem" (although ASM is raw partitions think of it as a cluster filesystem), that both nodes can see. BUT you then need to get these to tape somehow, unless you've got NetBackup et al. that support RMAN and can backup direct to tape you're more stuck.
Too many people don't think about this. You could create an NFS mount and backup to this from the nodes.

Is Sun Cluster dataservice for Websphere MQ available for
    Sun Cluster 3.0?
Should a Sun Cluster 3.0 be upgraded to 3.1 in order to install the Websphere MQ dataservice?
    Thanks in advance.

The Sun Cluster dataservice for WebSphere MQ is available for SC3.0 update 3 onwards.
However the agent is only distributed on the SC3.1 Agents CD, please contact Sun for the CD or Agent.
Updating to SC3.1 is not required. MQ 5.2/5.3 are supported, although only MQ 5.2 on Solaris 8, with MQ 5.3 on either Solaris 8 or 9.

  • Sun cluster and oracle RAC

my client is insisting on putting oracle RAC on top of sun cluster, the thing is i don't know what is the benifit of creating such an architecture, i tries to search on the internet but couldn't understand the benifits nor the advantage, Kindly if some one has implemented such an architecture to let us know the use and the benifits

    Hi,
Here on my environment, there is SUNCluster only for single instances. The Clusterware Oracle is complete providing high availability and load balance for your database, you don't need sun cluster with this case, no advantages gained. The only thing controlled by SUNCluster on my RAC environment is QFS (Cluster file system from SUN).
If search on this forum, there are many discussion by this topic (suncluster X RAC) like this post Re: Sun Cluster.. Why?

any inputs needed. let me know.

Well, I would run S10 updatemanager and get the latest patches that way.

  • Dedicated switches needed for RAC interconnect or not?

Currently working on an Extended RAC cluster design implementation, I asked the network engineer for dedicated switches for the RAC interconnects.
    Here is a little background:
There are 28 RAC clusters over 2X13 physical RAC nodes with separate Oracle_Home for each instance with atleast 2+ instances on each RAC node. So 13 RAC nodes will be in each site(Data-Center). This is basically an Extended RAC solution for SAP databases on RHEL 6 using ASM and Clusterware for Oracle 11gR2. The RAC nodes are Blades in a c7000 enclosure (in each site). The distance between the sites is 55+ kms.
Oracle recommends to have Infiniband(20GBps) as the network backbone, but here DWDM will be used with 2X10 Gbps (each at 10 GBps) links for the RAC interconnect between the sites. There will be separate 2x1GBps redundant link for the Production network and 2x2 GBps FC(Fiber-Channel) redundant links for the SAN/Storage(ASM traffic will go here) network. There will be switches for the Public-production network and the SAN network each.
Oracle recommends dedicated switches(which will give acceptable latency/bandwith) with switch redundancy to route the dedicated/non-routable VLANs for the RAC interconnect (private/heartbeat/global cache transfer) network. Since the DWDM interlinks is 2x10Gbps - do I still need the dedicated switches?
    If yes, then how many?
Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.. and help me take a decision.
    Many Thanks in advance..
    Abhijit

Absolutely agree.. the chances of overload in a HA(RAC) solution and ultmate RAC node eviction are very high(with very high latency) and for exactly this reason I even suggested inexpensive switches to route the VLANs for the RAC interconnect through these switches. The ASM traffic will get routed through the 2x2GB FC links through SAN-Directors (1 in each site).
Suggested the network folks to use Up-links from the c7000 enclosure and route the RAC VLAN through these inexpensive switches for the interconnect traffic. We have another challenge here: HP has certified using VirtualConnect/Flex-Fabric architecture for Blades in c7000 to allocate VLANs for RAC interconnect. But this is only for one site, and does not span Production/DR sites separated over a distance.
Btw, do you have any standard switch model to select from.. and how many to go for a RAC configuration of 13 Extended RAC clusters with each cluster hosting 2+ RAC instances to host total of 28 SAP instances.
    Many Thanks again!

  • SUN  CLUSTER RESOURCE FOR LEGATO CLIENT (LGTO.CLNT) in Oracle database

    hi everyone
I am tryinig to create a LGTO.clnt resource in oracle-rg resource group in SUN CLUSTER 3.2 with the following commands
    clresource create -g resource_group_name -t LGTO.clnt \
    -x clientname=virtual_hostname -x owned_paths=pathname_1,
    pathname_2[,...] resource_name
I just need to know what is value of Owned_Paths variable in the above commnad?
or what PATH it is reffering to ( $ORACLE_HOME or Global devices path ...etc) ?

    Hello,
The Owned_Paths parameter are the paths (or mountpoints) the legato client will be able to backup from.
To configure a legato client in the Networker console (and to be managed as a cluster client) you need to declare the in the Owned_Paths the paths you want to save.
The savesets paths can be a directory under the Owned_Paths.

  • Storagetek 6140 - chunk size? - veritas and sun cluster tuning?

hi, we've just got a 6140 and i did some raw write and read tests -> very nice box!
    current config: 16 fc-disks (300gbyte / 2gbit/sec): 1x hotspare, 15x raid5 (512kibyte chunk)
    3 logical volumes: vol1: 1.7tbyte, vol2: 1.7tbyte, vol3 rest (about 450gbyte)
on 2x t2000 coolthread server (32gibyte mem each)
it seems the max write perf (from my tests) is:
    512kibyte chunk / 1mibyte blocksize / 32 threads
    -> 230mibyte/sec (write) transfer rate
    my tests:
    * chunk size: 16ki / 512ki
    * threads: 1/2/4/8/16/32
    * blocksize (kibyte): .5/1/2/4/8/16/32/64/128/256/512/1024/2048/4096/8192/16384
did anyone out there some other tests with other chunk size?
how about tuning veritas fs and sun cluster???
veritas fs: i've read so far about write_pref_io, write_nstream...
i guess, setting them to: write_pref_io=1048576, write_nstream=32 would be the best in this scenario, right?

  • Sun Cluster 3.0 update 1 on Solaris 8 - panics!

I am building a test system in our lab on admittedly unsupported hardware configurations but the failure wasn't expected to be so dramatic. Setup as follows:
    2x E250 (single processor, 512 MB RAM)
dual connected to D1000 fully populated 18 Gb HDD
Solaris 8 6/00 with all latest recommended patches
Sun Cluster 3.0 update 1 installed with latest patches.
On first reboot (on either node), the kernel panics with the following:
    panic[cpu0]/thread=3000132c320: segkp_fault: accessing redzone
This happens straight after the system sets up the network and happens like that everytime and is easily reproduceable. My question is, has anyone successfully used SC3.0 update 1 on Solaris 8 6/00? Any information would be most appreciated.
    -chris.

We have the same problem with 2 SUN E420 and a D1000 storage array.
The problem is releted to the settings on the file :
    /etc/system
added by the cluster installation :
    set rpcmod:svc_default_stksize=0x4000
    set ge:ge_intr_mode=0x833
the second one line try to set a Gigabit Ethernet Interface that does not exist.
We comment out the two line and every things work fine.
I'm interesting to know what you think about Sun Cluster 3.0. and your experience.

  • Do we need to install microsoft cluster software for RAC 10G

    Hi all,
Our company wants to install ORACLE 10G RAC on windows 2003 R2. Based on the pre-requisites I asked network guys to provide me the shared disk storage from SAN, but they insist that this storage will not be accessible until we have windows clustering software running on top of the two nodes. I want to use oracle clusterware for clustering.
Please let me know how does it work. Do i need to have windows cluster s/w first then install oracle clusterware on these nodes.
    Help is as always appreciated
    Regards
    Aijaz

    Hi Aijaz,
You don't need any clusterware beyond Oracle clustware, but if is a requirement to your company you can use another Clusterware to install RAC, if they are supported, check on metalink. The Clusterware from Oracle provide all you need to deploy a Real Application Cluster production environment.
With additional documentation, take a look on http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14207/intro.htm#sthref21 for explain more about Oracle Clusteware
Here an excelent guide to install RAC 10g R2 on windows provided by Philip Newlan on http://www.jobcestbon.com/oracle/RacOnWindows.pdf

Ps.: Thank you Philip, this paper is the best that I read based RAC on Windows!!!

  • New to sun/unix need some help getting my solaris express developers workin

well it installed, detected my dvd but during the install process I was not asked any networking questions. I figured perhaps it meant I had to configure that after the fact but alas it says the network admin can't configure the network because the network auto-magic is configured. whatever that means...well I guess it means my ethernet was not found? also a right click screen resolution only gives my 50hz refresh rate and 640x480 so I am guessing that means my video card is not detected either? I have an asus 800se motherboard with built in graphics and ethernet so I guess I will need to get 2 pci cards?
well if so I started to look at the very large hardware list and my head started spinning. so my question is...can anyone here suggest both an older video and ethernet card that I might say be able to find on ebay? because I really don't need anything fancy I am must out to learn sun...old but good and reliable???
    thank you.

  • Failed to install SUN cluster 3.1 8/05 on solaris 10(x64)

I install the cluster 3.1 u4 on two nodes(node1 and node2) by using "scinstall".( The two nodes have the same system) After cluster installed, i reboot node2 . Before rebooting, I have done the following operation.
    # echo "etc/cluster/nodeid" >> /boot/solaris/filelist.ramdisk
    # echo "etc/cluster/ccr/did_instances" >> /boot/solaris/filelist.ramdisk
    # bootadm update-archive
updating /platform/i86pc/boot_archive...this may take a minute
    # init 6
But node2 crashed, and failed to reboot.
I could only see several characters "GRUB" in the screen. The system even doesnot present the grub menu.
    The system i used:
    bash-3.00# prtdiag

The only thing I can find that is vaguely similar is where users have installed -19 of 118855 but not updated all the other patches on the system. I would try booting from the failsafe mode, if you can get to this. Then update all the patches.
If you can't I guess you are going to have to either boot from DVD and fix or just rebuild.

  • Do I need 3 machines for Sun Two-Node Cluster HA for Apache?

The vendor is trying to set up a Sun Cluster HA for Apache and said it requires a dedicated machine
for monitoring purpose(The Sun Cluster HA for Apache probe??). Is this monitoring machine mandatory and have to be dedicated for that purpose? And can I use 1 machine to monitor more than 1 cluster? Because the vendor requires 2 extra machine to monitor 2 set of 2-node cluster..and the document I read from Sun only mentions the 3rd machine is required for admin console.
Also, if I only have 2 node cluster, can I configure Apache as a scalable + failover service at the same time or I have to choose either one? Thanks!!

Incorrect. You can set up a Solaris Cluster on a single node if you wish although two nodes give you redundancy. The probe for Apache runs from the node on which Apache is executing.
If you have a two node cluster you could have multiple implementations of Apache: fail-over and scalable. You can mix them until you run out of resources: CPU, networking bandwidth, IP addresses, etc.

  • Migrate Sun Cluster (+RACdisks to new hardware running Sun Cluster ( + RAC)

    Hello,
We have old hardware (v490s) running Sun Cluster 3.2 + Oracle RAC 10.2.0.4.0 connected to SAN. We need to move to T4. Oracle advised against including new hardware into existing cluster, so we are planning on building a new cluster with T4's, same software (Solaris 10, Sun Cluster 3.2, RAC 10.2.0.4.0).
When ready, we plan to shut down existing cluster, zone new cluster to existing disks and bring up everything on new hardware (simply stated).
    Will it work?
Any gotchas - like need to clear disk ids or Sun Cluster panicking? RAC panicking? Any reference docs out there?
    Thanks
    user12961096

Do we absolutely need that in our new setup or could we forgo that additional layer? Would Sun Cluster give us anything that the OS + RAC doesn't give us?Yes, Oracle Solaris Cluster does make things a lot easier. It looks after your device space and gives you consistent DID devices for CRS/RAC. It gives you the choice to use sQFS, raw metasets, or ASM. It has clprivnet which is a lot easier and performs better than an IPMP solution. The node failure detection time is <= 10 seconds which is quicker than CRS on it's own and it uses SCSI fencing instead of a STONITH approach. Finally, you have all the off the shelf agents that Solaris Cluster offers.
However, if you are only doing RAC and you just want ASM and you don't need the last few seconds of failure detection that OSC gives you and you think STONITH is good enough for your fencing purposes, then CRS on its own is perfect. There are many, many deployments both with and without OSC, it's not a simple yes/no answer.
Having worked for the Solaris Cluster group, I'm still slightly bias to including it rather than going without. Others have the alternate view! :-)
    Hope that helps,

    * Apache (shipped with the Solaris OS)
    * DNS
    * NFS V3
    * Java Enterprise System 2005Q4: Application Server, Web Server, Message Queue, HADB

Without speculating on the release date of Sun Cluster 3.x or even its feature list, I would like to understand what risk Sun would take when Sun Cluster would support ZFS as a failover filesystem? Once ZFS is part of Solaris 10, I am sure customers will want to use it in clustered environments.
BTW: this means that even Veritas will have to do something about ZFS!!!
If VCS is a much better option, it would be interesting to understand what features are missing from Sun Cluster to make it really competitive.
    Thanks
