Is VPN an option with Novell Client?

We're trying to set up something similar to a VPN on our network so
multiple out-of-office employees can access our network and work on our
files simultaneously. We have Novell Small Business Suite 6 and use a PC
as a makeshift server.
Does Novell Small Business Suite 6 or Novell Client have this capability?
If so, how would we set this up and what are the limitations (i.e. would
it just send screenshots and keystrokes across the internet connection or
the actual files themselves?)?
Any help you may have on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

VPN is a part of the Bordermanager piece. The docs cover this.
There are other possibilities to provide remote access to files. The
question is what features do you want to use.
Here are a couple possibilities:
-iFolder
-NetStorage
-Virtual Office (part of NetWare 6.5)
-NetDrive
-GroupWise Document Management
Each has possibilities that might do what you want. You might want to
read up on the features of each to help you start down the road of the
product that will do all you need.

I've Problems with roaming profiles.
It is perhaps not a Novell problem but anything with windows rights?
We use ZCM11: (Server: SLES11 SP1)
Client new PC with a freshly installed Windows7, all updates.
(Only Turn on file and printer sharing, anything else default, no virusscanner)
The pre-agent has been installed and then the the Novell Client 2SP1 IR7
The PC gets a "Dynamic Local User Policy" with the settings:
- Use the credentials of the user source
- (Manage existing user account - but we have none there)
- Volatile user (with no cache, meaning that the user is immediately deleted ... We have also tested with cache.)
- e-dir user should be only member of Users
The users from edir get a Roaming Profile Policy with:
- Store user profile in user's Home Directory. (which is on the OES/SLES server)
---- results ----
If the user has no centrally stored profile, then he can log on but just once!
(if "Enable Volatile User cache" also several times to the same PC)
If the user already has a stored profile, he can not log on Error: "The Group Policy client service failed the logon Access is denied"
In my view, the following happens. W7 create the user locally and want's put in the settings from a central profile in the local
Profile and can not do that.
Only when no "central profile" is there in the homedir, or if this profile does not contain the file ntuser.dat, the user can log in locally.
However, no files are used from te saved profile, for instance from the saved desktop.
I can not imagine that anyone around the world with ZCM11 on a SLES/OES Server don't use the Novell client and raoming profiles
It must therefore give a simple trick to solve the problem.
But which one? Can some one here help me?

• Imgexp.exe proplem with Novell Client 4.91SP5

I have Novell Client 4.91SP5 and the Novell Application Launcher Version 7.0.1.4. I am trying to use imgexp.exe v7.0.1.0 to create zmg files for addons. I can add individual files but I can not add folders. When I drag the folders to imgexp it does nothing. If I click on the folder icon, with the plus next to it, within image explorer and select a folder I get: ZENworks Image Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. When I click on Don't Send, I get: The instruction at "0x73dd1c7" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program. I have tried running it from the server and the hard drive and have the same problem. Thanks.

I am running Windows XP SP3 with all hotfixes. Drive Y is a network drive. This is a SLES 10SP2, OES2SP1 server. However I also have the same problem with a NW6.5SP8 server. All volumes are NSS. I have installed imgexp on both my hard drive and the server and have the same problem from both locations. I also have the Novell Client patches through May of 2009. I noticed that there are 3 new beta patches for the client after August that I have not installed. Is there a client setting that may affect this?

• Invalid File Handle Windows 7 with Novell Client 2 SP1

Hello!
I have a user on Windows who gets "invalid file handle" when saving files in
WordPerfect and possibly Adobe as well. He thinks it mostly occurs when he
has multiple files open and has saved one open file to a different
directory. Then if he goes to save another file in it's same directory, he
gets the error. I hope this makes sense. Would anyone have any idea if it
does make sense?
Thanks!

Maybe that was once the intention by novell, but I assure you that you
will have no trouble finding a lot of people/exemples that proves the
opposite...
Yeah, you can set the server-side settings which do have an impact,
on win7 stations = blue screen if ON. But to say that it overrules the
client setting....No way....
We have had every single server EVER setup with Netware with
filecaching OFF and OpLocks2 off and changing the client side setting
DO make a direct difference, mostly bad but in the case of Win7, file
caching on seems to be a requirement since Win7 can't handle any open
files in a good way withouth it. It simply states "file not found" if
file caching = off. If file caching = on, then the client will receive
the message that the file is busy and can be opened in read-only.
And, again, have file caching = on AND changing the server also to ON
is NOT a good idea, at least not for us, since we got blue screens all
over within a couple of min's when testing that setting and those
disapperad just a fast when setting it to off again on the server.

• Login intermittently slow with ZCM agent AND Novell client

We continue to struggle with intermittently slow logins in our environment. In testing, we noticed that logins are very fast (10-20 seconds) when only the Novell Client is installed, and very fast (~10 seconds) when only the ZCM agent is installed. However, when they are both installed, logins slow down, sometimes to 1.5 minutes or longer.
We have checked DNS and rDNS, and they are both configured properly. SLP is working properly as demonstrated by the fast logins when only the client is installed. We use LDAP for user lookup, and it also works very fast to resolve user names (~ 1 second).
We are using ZCM 10.3.1, and the client is fully patched as well (both Novell Client 2 and 4.91)
Are there any specific settings (for the ZCM agent or the client itself) that might address this issue?

My apologies, I told you to remove the wrong thing.
I should have said NMAS instead of CASA.
I am just so used to saying CASA when talking about ZCM.
In regards to NMAS, you could simply rename "NWSSO.DLL" as a test.
If NMAS is installed which is tested by the existence of this DLL, then
a certain NMAS call is always made, which in some cases can take a long
time.

• Novell Client with NCS cluster behind firewall (IP filter)

I try to connect with Novell Client on Windows to a OES NCS cluster
behind a firewall. Currently open ports are 524/tcp, 524/tcp, and
427/tcp for the Master IP Address and the virtual servers.
This does not work. My first analysis shows that the client tries to
connect to the host running the Master IP Address with it's primary IP.
Is this correct? Is there a way to use the Novell Client without
allowing packets with the destination IP address of the NCS cluster hosts?

Thank you very much indeed for the thorough answer and explanation. We

Ports 524 und 427 are exposed for tcp and udp on all physical and

• Novell Client for Linux 2 beta & VMWare - bridged only?

OpenSUSE 11.1 with Novell Client for Linux 2.0 SP2 beta.
OpenSUSE is installed as a VMWare Workstation guest using NAT. When attempting to use contextless login, the Novell Client hangs. If you disable contextless login and then browse to the right context, you can login OK.
If you change the virtual NIC from NAT to Bridged, contextless login works fine. If at all possible, we need to use Bridged instead of NAT (long story).
Any idea what could be the problem? From what I can tell, SLP, DA, etc are set correctly, but I could be wrong.
Thanks.

Use NAT only if you need NAT - otherwise use bridged.
Thorsten
I was afraid that someone was goign to say something like that :)
We use port security hardware on our network, which will disable a port on the switch if it detects multiple MAC addresses on the same port. A virtual machine's bridged networking sets port security off and disables the port, so we have had to resort to NAT for all virtual machines. We can ask for exceptions to be made for a subset of our lab computers, but that is not an ideal solution.
Not only is that extra overhead for us to manage these exceptions, but we will not be able to realize our long-term goal of providing the virtual machine to our students to use on their personal notebooks since we cannot provide them port security exceptions.
I am still having problems grasping the reason that a contextless lookup (via LDAP, I assume) would misbehave while coming from a NATted connection but a bridged connection works fine on the exact same virtual machine. Shouldn't the communication between the VM and the LDAP server work properly either way??

• Novell Client logoff bug

Using win32 api ExitWindowsEx
-XP SP3 install without Novell client: locked desktop can be logged out by program (test program with countdown timer and ExitWindowsEx call)
-Same XP SP3 install with Novell Client: locked desktop logs out but hangs forever at an empty desktop screen. No keys responding (even CTRL+ALT+DELETE won't work)
Problem seems to be described here:
The session remains locked when you call ExitWindowsEx(EWX_LOGOFF|EWX_FORCE,NULL&# 41; in Windows XP
The ExitWindowsEx() Function May Not Log Off the User or Shut Down the Computer If the Computer is Locked
MS did fix it. The Novell Client reintroduces the problem. Please fix asap.

What client version?
Is this a regression caused by a newer version the Novell Client?
Is this a regression caused by Windows Patches?
Is it intermittent? Consistent? Steps to reproduce? Other software / packages installed?
Is this reproducible when the user logs out.
I see no Defect posted agianst this. So its either a new development, or has been this way forever.
Just as an aside: May I ask what the use case is? If the ultimate goal is to restart a workstation there are other ways to do that. If it is to remotely, or programatically logout a user, it defeats the behaviour expected by the user when they lock the workstation.

• ZENworks Agent + Novell client on domain joined pc

Hi,
We are in progress of migrate a MS domain to E-directory domain.
There are a new bunch of new pc's which will have our base image (with Novell Client SP3 IR9 & ZENworks 11.3.1) installed which are in a workgroup.
There existing pc's will be manually updated with Novell Client en ZENworks client.
My tought's were to unjoin the pc's in the domain and then install Novell Client en ZENworks client.

First comment. I have to say that in all my years on here this is the first
time I have seen ANYONE moving back to eDirectory as opposed to being forced
off their beloved eDirectory. Welcome back! LOL.
None of my 8500 systems are in a domain although we do have one for various
services including Exchange. We use IDM to keep users and passwords synced.
Presuming the users account already exists and its not a volatile user you
should be fine. I am presuming in ZCM you are setting up a DLU policy that
will control and manage the local user. As long as the local user exists the
DLU won't try to create a new one and you won't get prompted by ZCM"
box.with a "whats your credentials". Personally we have had no luck pre
installing the agent and then sealing the image. There are a lot of
documented steps you have to go through to clean it up. If you don't you are
going to have all kinds of issues in ZCM. We just found it easier to run it
after the fact. Tech is going to be their anyway setting it up so why not
let them finish it is where we went. So in conclusion install your client,
install the agent. Reboot. Login local first time. your WS won't have the
DLU policy yet and you will need it for the normal login process to work
smoothly. Do a ZAC CC ref if you want the policy quickly. After that user
logs into Novell, credentials pass through, ZCM agent see local user exists
and password is the same and voil*. User has their desktop. good luck.

If you are searching the registry, check for the "Senforce" string. It should be at HKLM\Software\Senforce
Try running the install program for the ZSC with the following command line:
setup.exe /V"STUNINSTALL=1"
If you've specified an uninstall password, try this one instead:
setup.exe /V"STUNINSTALL=1 STUIP=password"" (please note the double quote at the end)
Let me know if that helped you.

Client32:Please wait while System retries request to <Server Name>
To stop waiting, press Enter
Netware will then return an error and try to reconnect in the background

If we try to use Windows Explorer to map a network drive, the Netware Login
dialog will be prompted, after type in the password the message "The tree or

only way to solve this problem is restart the computer.
we have no this problem occurred in Windows 2000 with NW Client 4.83 or

• Automatically login zenworks without Novell client.

I want to setup a computer that will automatically login to windows and to
the ZENWorks agent (even if just to workstation) and then run the NAL as the
windows shell. Also, we did not want to have the Novell client installed on
the machine.
I have figured out how to get the shell to work, but I can't seem to get the
Zen agent to automatically logon to the workstation. I attempted to use the
steps in TID10094960, but the zenworks agent login still comes up. I haven't
yet put the windows credentials into the registry so that it can
automatically login, do I need to do that at the same time?
We're trying to make a machine that will only allow the programs to run that
are presented by the NAL window and for the computer to login automatically
to the point where the icons are displayed.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks..
Brian W.

so let me see if I got this right...
If I want to get applications I need to authenticate a user. So, if the
following are set then it should work.
1. Do not install Novell client.
2. Create a user in NDS that I can create a local user account for. Then I
set the workstation for automatic login to windows using the a local account
with the credentials for the NDS user.
3. Set the Zenworks agent for PASSIVE login (this is the default?) Can this
be changed somewhere if I already installed it, I read lower in the document
you posted that you need to uncheck a box in the installation, can I change
this option after the fact if I installed it wrong?
4. Setup NAL as the shell.
This will allow the any user of the workstation to use only the available
icons and will allow me as an administrator to distribute them using the
NAL.
Thanks for your help

• Novell Client for Linux causes Excel/Crossover to lock on file open

When using Microsoft Office with Crossover, if I access a mounted NetWare
drive using Novell Client for Linux it causes the office Open dialog to lock.
The same action with an NCPFS mount works ok.
Of course I understand if having Office/Crossover working is not exactly a
priority but my company will need it if we are to migrate to NLD

• DHCP Conflict between ZfD 4 Agent and Novell Client

I am having problems with the use of Novell Client versions that support
DHCP settings tab (Tree, Context, Server).
This is in this board because my problem is only reproduced when ZENworks
for Destkops 4 (IR5 and IR7) Workstation Management component is installed.
THe problem is this:
Every now and then, logging in with the novell client displays 886f errors
in the login results window, and other strange communication errors.
If I release and renew the IP, it works fine after that.
If I reboot, there is a chance I get the same problem.
This absolutely does not happen when I have the two options for DHCP
settings in the Novell Client unchecked (Server->Binary Data).
Now, is ZfD Workstation Manager getting the Preferred Server IP from DHCP
as well during system startup? Is this clear? Happens on both Windows
2000 and Windows XP.
I have no access to the router serving DHCP so I don't know the details on
that end.

There was (is?) a conflict that is supposed to be solved,
but I'm not 100% convinced that is true. Since I always
use Client32 I remove novdhcp.dll in my ZfDAgent transform,
even now with ZDM7 because I've seen the "semaphore" error
there too if I don't.
